Oakwood Primary School Sandpiper Road SOUTHAMPTON SO16 8FD Issue 4 2 April 2015 Dear Parents Sometimes, the front page of the newsletter is not enough to pass on all the good news about what’s been happening at Oakwood and what we’ve got to look forward to! Earlier this half term, our work as a Rights Respecting School was recognised by Unicef, when we had our Level 1 Award. A reminder that this is about the rights Unicef is trying to achieve for every child in the world, including your children here at Oakwood. Threaded through our teaching is that our children have these rights already, and everyone respects them. Not all children in the world are yet in that lucky position. You can read more on our website: oakwoodlive.net/rrsa. Congratulations to your children and all the staff - everyone’s worked hard towards this achievement. In other good news, Gemma Fawcitt has told her class today that she is expecting her second baby in September. She will continue with 5FL right through to the end of the year in July. Emma Shore has a busy Easter break too, as she is getting married. (She’s officially becoming Mrs Brooke-Shore, but will keep “Miss Shore” for the children until the end of the year!) I know you will join with me in congratulations and best wishes for them both! Have a well-deserved and peaceful Easter break. Ian Taylor Headteacher Article 14 Every child has the right to practise their religion, as long as they are not stopping other people from enjoying their rights. Happy Easter! Thank you to Robert Sanday from Lordshill Church, who led our service this morning. Our Easter Gardens have grown well too! News from the Team! Spring Term Trips This term we have seen numerous trips and events across the whole school. Most year groups have already been on trips including Winchester Science Centre, Minstead Study Centre, and Manor Farm. After the Easter break, Year R will be visiting Marwell Zoo, Year 2 will be going to Beaulieu and we will see two year groups attend residential visits to Fairthorne Manor and Knapp House. There is a lot of work involved in organising trips and Claire seems to have spent most of this term filling out paperwork to make sure trips run smoothly. It really is worth it to see the children’s excitement when they leave and when they return. Dinner Menu The Summer lunch menu is now available. A leaflet is coming home and the menu is also in this newsletter. As well as a nutritionally balanced main, there is fresh fruit available every day. Don’t forget to visit the website www.myschoollunch.co.uk/southampton and enter the competition each term to win a £25 voucher. The pupil password is ‘Max’. Information As you know we regularly send out letters, flyers, etc. keeping you informed of all events happening in school. Don’t forget that these can also be accessed via our website by clicking on the Newsletter icon in the menu. Events will also appear on the school calendar. We know that sometimes letters and flyers go missing or don’t quite reach home, so we are now sending information via email too. If we don’t have an email address for you, please contact the admin team and they will add it to your child’s record and you will receive all correspondence. After School Clubs We hosted some fantastic clubs this term and after the Easter break we will be sending out letters offering clubs for the Summer term. As always we will try our utmost to accommodate your first preferences, however depending on the number of requests for places this is not always possible and we may have to offer second choices. Free School Meals Online Checking Whether you send your child with a packed lunch or you receive a free meal in Years R, 1 and 2, please consider completing the Free School Meals Online Checking application by clicking on the link on the front page of our website. If your application comes back as eligible, as well as the school receiving additional funding you will qualify for help paying for other school services eg. after school clubs, trips, uniform etc. Contact details We have received almost 300 out of 407 data collection sheets that were sent out during the Spring term. It’s not too late to return them as Karen will continue to update. You don’t have to wait for us to send out the sheets as it is really important for us to have up to date information should we need to contact you at any time during the day. Uniform We will soon be placing orders for uniform and, towards the end of the summer term, deliveries from our supplier take considerably longer. Therefore if you need uniform for September, please place orders as early as possible to make sure you receive it in plenty of time. There are details of our uniform and order forms available on our website. Thank you. Achievements As always, we have been busy recording lots of awards and achievements this term. Carol says: “I am particularly amazed at the high level of Maths knowledge when I witness KS2 children being tested in the Hub. They unknowingly make me feel a little inadequate! Maybe we have a few Einsteins among us!” Enjoy the Easter break and we look forward to seeing you all in the Summer term. From Liz, Karen, Claire and Carol Another packed half term! Many thanks for your support today for the non-uniform day. This money raised will help towards the expenses of the Summer Fete. This is being held on Friday 26 June starting at 5pm. We would appreciate any donations of toys, games and books in good condition along with any unwanted gifts and new/unused toiletries. Perhaps you may be having a ‘spring-clean sort out’ over the holidays and could send some items into school after the break. Any donations may be taken to the office to be passed to us. We also need to stock our ever popular bottle tombola, so if you are able to donate a bottle, either alcoholic or non-alcoholic this would be appreciated. We are planning to have a BBQ at the Fete this year and are in need of a couple of gas BBQ’s to borrow – ideally with someone who is happy to cook on them! If you have a BBQ and/or would be willing to cook sausages and burgers during the event please contact us asap so we can make arrangements - thank you. More details concerning the fete will be sent after the Easter holidays. Other dates for your calendars for next term are: Community coffee mornings. The dates for the summer term are 1 May, 5 June and 3 July. Each morning starts just after 9am and are held in the Green Base area of the KS1 building. You will be very welcome! The OSA Annual Meeting for parents is on Monday 18 May at 6pm (KS2 building). Do come along and hear our report for the year on the activities which have taken place. Discos for the children will be held on 2 July. A separate letter will be sent nearer the time. Thank you for your continued support. Gill Handley-Garland Chairperson Our new library furniture, bought with some of the money raised by the OSA! Thank you! News from the House Captains Ventura - Britannia - Azura - Adonia One of the highlights of this term for us was Red Nose Day! We raised over £400 by making our faces funny for money and performing a flashmob dance in the school halls! We are really pleased that Oakwood supports charities like Comic Relief so that more children can have their right to health and education. You can see our dance on the blog! As house captains, we have a very busy summer term ahead. We have our SATs tests, but it will also be our last term as house captains and our very last term at Oakwood before we move on. Have a great Easter (and don’t eat too much chocolate!) Easter 2016 The Easter weekend will be at the start of the fortnight break in 2016. The first day of the break is Good Friday 25 March 2016 and we reopen on Monday 11 April 2016. Please bear this in mind if you are booking holidays. School Calendar 2015 - 2016 Sainsbury’s School Games: The youngest children to represent Oakwood this half term were the six lucky children in Year 2 who went to Test Park sports ground to take part in a Football skills festival. With the emphasis on learning new skills and having fun, the mixed group of boys and girls had a great afternoon. In early March a Y3/4 and a Y5/6 Tag Rugby team also went to Test Park to compete in a Tag Rugby tournament. Both teams did well making it to the semi-final and final respectively. The Y3/4 team came in 3rd whilst the Y5/6 team went one better and picked up a silver medal each in 2nd. For the second year running Oakwood were runners up in the SSG Benchball competition. This year we sent a Y6 team and a Y5 ‘B’ team to the competition. Both teams made it to the knockout stages. The Y5 ‘B’ team had to settle for 4th place after a hotly contested match against Bassett Green. However the Y6 team came 2nd, but were so close to the gold - missing out on the final throw of the match. A mixed team of 7 boys and girls has had a number of fixtures in the SSG Hockey league which has been taking place at Cantell school. Although the team were drawing for 1st place after all the league games - after some excellent results, during the playoffs to determine an overall winner Oakwood lost out, meaning they finished 3rd. Sainsbury’s Active Kids Vouchers: Please keep bringing in your Sainsbury’s active kids vouchers. And remember, ask neighbours, friends, grannies and granddads and anyone else you can think of for them too! Every voucher you bring in buys equipment for the children to use in PE lessons and during break and lunchtimes for the whole school. Current totals: Britannia: 2,878 Adonia: 3,022 Ventura: Azura: 3,561 3,133 School Football Team: The school football team have been the busiest team by far this half term. They’ve had games (and goals) galore! So a big thank you to mums and dads for keeping the kit clean during the seven games we’ve played in the last five weeks. League games were won against; Foundry Lane, Tanners Brook, St Marks, Fairisle, and St Denys, meaning that for the second year running Oakwood were crowned Central West League winners! The team have also progressed to the City Cup Final, which is being played on the last day of term at Wide Lane, so look out for our result on the blog. This will be one of the last performances of the year from the football team who have yet again had an excellent season. Club of the Month: Due to a last minute cancellation KS2 children have only managed one Club of the Month this half term. Jim from Millbrook Rugby club spent the day working with all classes, and was very impressed by our tag-rugby play. ` Week 1 Summer 2014/2015 Week Commencing 20 April / 11 May / 8 and 29 June Blue (Meat/Fish) Yellow (Vegetarian) Monday Laverstoke Park Beef Meatballs Quorn Burger Tuesday Salmon Nibbles Cheese and Tomato Pizza Wednesday Chicken, Bacon and Sweetcorn Pie Veggie Sausages Thursday Beef Roast with Gravy Baked Spanish Omelette Friday Harry Ramsden’s Fish in Batter Vegetable and Lentil Curry Week 2 Summer 2014/2015 Week Commencing 27 April / 18 May / 15 June / 6 July Blue (Meat/Fish) Yellow (Vegetarian) Monday Chicken Grill Veggie Balls in tomato sauce Tuesday Gammon Steak Cheese and Tomato Pizza Wednesday Mild Beef Chilli with rice Macaroni Cheese and Garlic Bread Thursday Chicken Roast with Stuffing Bean and Vegetable Bake Friday Fish Fingers Veggie Whirl Week 3 Summer 2014/2015 Week Commencing 4 May / 1 and 22 June / 13 July Blue (Meat/Fish) Yellow (Vegetarian) Monday Beef Bolognese Veggie Balls in Tomato Sauce Tuesday Laverstoke Park Beef Burger Cheese and Tomato Pizza Wednesday Mild Chicken Curry Quorn Burger with Gravy Thursday Pork Roast with Stuffing Veggie Sausage Turnover Fishcake Vegetarian Enchilada Friday www.myschoollunch.co.uk/southampton quizzes, menus, feedback, advice for lunch boxes etc www.mycookeryclub.co.uk/southampton easy recipes to try at home! www.myfarmfood.co.uk/southampton farming, food in season and fascinating facts about the food we eat! Have a lovely Easter Break from all the staff at Oakwood Kidz Club Kidz Play (UK) Ltd Unit 404 Solent Business Centre, Millbrook Road West, Millbrook, Southampton, Hampshire SO15 OHW Tel: 023 8077 6579 www.kidzplayuk.com Registered in the UK. Registration No. 6542170 Our Linkway is finally looking like it’s a proper part of our school! The cladding makes it blend in well to the existing buildings and, while you might see less happening on the outside, it’s all go on the inside, with doors, electrics, lighting and other fixtures and fittings going in. Our finish date of Easter is looking a bit optimistic now (!), so it will definitely still be under construction in the summer term, but we would rather make it a good job than rush it! Obviously, the diversions around the school buildings are temporarily inconvenient, but once it’s finished, you will be able to use the short cut to the KS2 playgrounds once again. We continue to remind children of how to stay safe when building works are happening, so please make sure the message Keep Away from Building Sites is repeated at home, especially with the Easter break coming up. Many thanks to the builders from Tynwood, who are doing such a good job, and building us something which will be used by all children to help them move safely around our new Primary School!
