The castle was built in French style by the Marquis de Béthune in 1842. Both the castle and estate were acquired by Ernest Solvay in 1893, to make it his summer residence, hence its popular denomination. Count Solvay trusted Victor Horta with the interior decoration. Today the estate is owned by the regional government of Wallonia, and is classified as an ‘Exceptional Heritage Site in Wallonia’.
