Summer Camps 2015 Job Description | YA LEAD COUNSELOR Applications are being accepted through April 20, 2015 The Jordan Schnitzer Family Art Adventures Program at Oregon College of Art and Craft (OCAC) is seeking a capable YA Lead Counselor to work on a temporary, part-time basis. The successful candidates are highly organized, self motivated and enthusiastic. A warm, creative and efficient attitude is needed. RESPONSIBLE TO: Art Adventures Camp Director and Assistant Camp Director MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Minimum 18 years of age. 2. Completed your first year of college or the equivalent. 3. Camp counseling or childcare-related experience. 4. Sincere respect for children. 5. Care and understanding of the arts and natural environment, and the ability to share it with others. 6. Ability to work well in a small community. 7. Posses punctuality, flexibility, energy and enthusiasm. 8. Ability to lead campers and direct large groups of campers and on occasion staff. 9. Ability to pass a Background Check. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: ▪ ▪ ▪ CPR First Aid Red Cross Babysitter Training GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES: See to the health and well being of the campers on a daily basis. The YA Lead Counselor will be responsible for directing up to 60 middle-school aged campers. The campers will be divided into groups (12-15 campers per group) for each of their daily workshops. The Lead Counselor will greet and tend the campers in the group, as well as individually. As a role model, the YA Lead Counselor will also create one-on-one relationships with campers and relay pertinent information to parents if necessary. Communicating directly and effectively with parents, teachers and the Camp Director is necessary for success in this role. The YA Lead Counselor is expected to engage campers with games, stories, and songs, as well as take a lead role in directing the behavior of their campers throughout the day. SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Provide supervisory care, greet, engage and facilitate transitions and general camp experiences for a group of up to 60 middle school campers. Although this group is large, we are promoting independence for our older campers, so depending on the behavior of the group, there will be many opportunities to provide more general supervisory care. 2. Assist the camper group in working together: help campers solve problems, ease conflicts, and learn to appreciate each other and the environment. 3. Fulfill group obligations to the whole camp: help with set-up and clean-up activities, arrive as a group on time to activities, create a positive personality for the group. 4. Be a positive role model for your campers, for other counselors, and always enforce camp rules. 5. Keep the kids safe and healthy. Take care of their basic first aid needs and know when it is appropriate to take them for additional care. 6. Interact with campers during workshops. Provide help and support to workshop teachers and campers during activity times. Move between workshops, always checking in with teachers and campers to support and behavioral problems. 7. Be aware of where your campers are at all times. 8. Foster positive relationships among camp staff, campers and camper parents. 9. Share in designing, leading and carrying out free-time and carnival activities specifically geared for older campers. 10. Keep records, do attendance every day, and make accident reports as assigned. 11. Provide supervisory care of children in before/after care as assigned. 12. Attend & actively participate in scheduled orientations, meetings, Art Walks, and Parent/Camp events as assigned. HOURS: YA Lead Counselor hours are scheduled between 8:30am to 5:30pm, Monday - Friday, with a scheduled, unpaid lunch break daily. The time for the lunch break may vary slightly in accordance to the lunch duty schedule. On some days you may be asked to come earlier or stay a bit later depending on before/after care needs. Counselors will also work paid lunch duty up to two days during the week. Days off during the workweek are not usually possible unless absolutely necessary (i.e.; illness). Summer Camps Camp run from June 15 – August 21, 2015. Employment is offered for full weekly session of camp in for the Young Adult Day Camp (grades 6-8). Employees are expected to work the entirety of each session for which they are hired. Additionally, this position requires attendance at one camp orientation on June 7, 2015, and all other staff meetings/orientations as determined by the Camp Director. Pay is $12/hr.
