But at the Moulin Rouge, with its joie de vivre spirit, it’s all the rage. High kicks, shapely legs, and the hope of securing the coveted souvenir of a dancer’s garter add a certain je ne sais quoi to the festivities. This evening we have lots of garter-clad legs on hand. Select one, and for a mere $100 you may slide the garter off yourself – for a chance to win: A TRIP FOR TWO TO PARIS – PARIS, LAS VEGAS THAT IS – complete with Eiffel Tower. LIVE AUCTION 101 JEROBOAM OF BUBBLES The French region of Champagne (comprised of the towns of Reims, Épernay, and Aÿ) was the first region in the world to make sparkling wine in any quantity. Today, the name of the region is synonymous with the finest of all sparkling wines, and winemaking traditions of Champagne have become role models for sparkling wine producers, worldwide. Founded in Aÿ in 1584 by Pierre Gosset, Gosset is the oldest wine house in Champagne. It also remains one of the most prestigious, considered by many collectors and connoisseurs as the world’s preeminent name in luxury champagne. Gosset’s inimitable style has changed very little over the centuries. Gosset is now a fixture on wine lists of some of the most celebrated restaurants in the world, lauded by sommeliers for an exceptional capacity to enhance a wide range of cuisine. It is, in short, a legend among the wines of Champagne. Enjoy this magnificent 3L bottle of Gosset Brut Excellence Champagne for a most special occasion. Pellet, and gallerist, Edmond Sagot, desired to create a retrospective edition of his popular posters in series that would be smaller in size. Lautrec was thought to have begun work on such a project before he died. Andre Sauret realized this edition in 1951 using the abandoned designs. This 1st edition of approximately 500 was printed by Mourlot-Fréres and published by André Sauret, Éditions du Livre. Toulouse-Lautrec broadened the range of lithography by treating the tone more freely. His strokes became more summary (quickly) and the planes more unified. Sometimes the ink was speckled on the surface to bring about a great textural richness. In his posters he combined flat images (the influence of the Japanese prints) with type. Thank you Suleyman Cooke, Salon D’ Art. 105 CANARY ISLAND CLASSIC 9-day Cruise for Two Aboard the Crystal Serenity Inviting beaches and lush gardens, exceptional wines, and delicious ports await on the sun-kissed shores of the Canary Islands. SILENT AUCTION - Art of Masters 201 MOULIN ROUGE, 1936 M’ Michelle, French Lithograph Edition: HC 1/10 Image size: 25” x 19” Signed and numbered in pencil This exceptional original lithograph by M’ Michelle has captured the spirit of the Paris years when Moulin Rouge was visited by Lautrec and his gang of artist friends. It depicts Moulin Rouge, the famous landmark of the birthplace of the modern form of the can-can dance and entertainment. The composition is in the style of PostImpressionism, invoking the romance of fin de siècle France. 202 APRÈS LE BAIN, 1919 Pierre Auguste Renoir, (1841 – 1919), French Etching Edition Unnum./1,000 Image size: 18” x 12” Stamped “Vollard” The bather was to be Renoir's favorite theme, the female nude in the landscape, seen after she has emerged from her bath or swim, cleansed and refreshed, metaphorically reborn amid nature. There was no subject that better communicated the joy Renoir experienced as he gazed upon and relished the sensuality of the female form, while at the same time he could express the exhilaration he felt at being immersed in the brilliant light of the Midi in the south of France. A dealer of importance to the Impressionists was Ambroise Vollard. Renoir had met Vollard around 1895. Then still a relatively young man, Vollard began to buy from Renoir and after 1900 became one of the principal dealers of his work. With the help of Vollard, Renoir was able to create a series based on his life’s paintings. By using a multiple-plate process, the Life & Work series is full of bright vivid colors reminiscent of their origins in oil paints and pastels. 203 PLATE 8, PAYSAGE, 1919 Pierre Auguste Renoir, (1841 – 1919), French Lithograph Edition: 272/500 Image size: 15 3/8” x 11 11/16” Signed by the artist in the stone Renoir assisted in designing the plates for this series, and oversaw their printing in 1919. The edition of 500 was later published in 1948 with the permission of the Estate Renoir. Renoir is most noted for his use of vibrant colors and celebration of female beauty. Working en plein air, a technique considered modern to his contemporaries, Renoir captured landscapes saturated with color and the rosy-cheeked bourgeoisie happily going about their daily activities. Renoir chooses to reveal a world perceived through his eyes through a juxtaposition of vibrant colors and color contrasts.
