After only several months as the museum’s director, I am very excited about the new exhibitions, programs, partnerships and opportunities that are developing for OMA members and art patrons throughout San Diego and Southern California. Already this year, OMA has attracted huge turnouts to each of our receptions and important events (600 attended the Hubbell/Salk opening reception in early February; 400 attended our Art After Dark event in January). Additionally, OMA is generating tremendous press attention resulting in significantly greater numbers of admissions and new members. Overall museum membership has increased 10% in the past 2 months! OMA is aggressively building a new vision for the future of the museum, which has spurred a “buzz” in the North County and San Diego arts community about the museum’s programs and developing opportunities. Several significant strategies and priorities are in development with our outstanding Board, staff, volunteers, and partners that will be announced over the next year. However, I wish to share with you a few new directions that are ready for announcement. First, OMA intends to focus significant exhibition and programming attention on the tremendous array of diverse and talented artists living and working in San Diego. Producing insightful scholarship about our region’s talent and connecting it with the larger Southern California, national, and international arts discourse will be a critical priority for the museum in the next few years. As all visitors to OMA know, OMA is greatly endowed with a fabulous museum facility – a 2008 Fredrick Fisher renovation/expansion to our original Irving Gill historic 1934 City Hall building. Taking a fresh perspective on our wonderful museum and all of its capabilities, OMA is looking to reconfigure our facility to better serve the public with additional exhibition and programming galleries/spaces. For example our lobby, outside terrace/plaza, and stairwell are all ripe for the exhibition of artwork and sculpture, in particular. In addition, our lower level – historically off limits to the public – has a significant amount of space that can accommodate a 700 square foot exhibition/project space gallery and a 900 square foot youth/adult education classroom. With the generous support of our members and donors over the next months of this year, we can open these new spaces and offer the high quality of programming that OMA is known for. So...get ready...we’ve got much more to announce in the near future. EXHIBITIONS VOLCANOS AND FULL MOONS: ERNEST SILVA MAY 25 - SEPTEMBER 15, 2013 At once comic, contemplative and expressive of the human condition, Ernest Silva’s body of work reflects his interest in using multiple-narratives to explore personal and universal images. Recognized for his metaphoric imagery of deer, lighthouses, water, birds and figures, Silva will present an engaging conversation between his earlier and more recent work occupying two exhibition galleries and our lobby! Ernest Silva, House, Trees, Family, 2012 Silva derives his imagery from a variety of sources: family photographs of his childhood in Rhode Island, vintage story book covers from the 1950’s, popular culture and art history. His imagery is also informed by memory, providing a panoply of symbols that combine to activate a strong emotional response. Interested in the intersection between painting, sculpture and installation his exhibition will reflect a combination of the three that will transform the galleries into a stage set with drawings and paintings on the walls and props on the floor. Silva encourages the viewer to become part of the painting and the story, losing the separation between artist, art and audience. Ernest Silva moved to San Diego from Rhode Island in 1979 to accept a teaching position at the University of California San Diego where he is a Professor of Visual Art. Since then he has been an active force not only in the San Diego/Southern California art community, but also on a national and international level. His public art projects have included an installation at the Centro Cultural Tijuana, Tijuana, Mexico and he has a major long-term project called the Rain House at The New Children’s Museum of San Diego. Working with found and reclaimed objects, wood, metal, clay and paper, each of Johnson’s works hint at satirical short stories derived from his imagination and the world around him. Johnson has played an active role in the San Diego art scene since the 1980s and most recently completed a major project for the County of San Diego.
