Citation
The Ontario Society of Occupational Therapists (OSOT) is pleased to nominate the Ontario
Stroke Network which provides provincial leadership and planning for the Ontario Stroke
System by measuring performance, partnering to achieve best practices, and creating
innovations for stroke prevention, care, recovery and reintegration.
The Ontario Stroke System (OSS) is a collaborative system of provider organizations and
partners that aims to coordinate and improve stroke prevention and care across the entire
continuum. Under the leadership of the Ontario Stroke Network, the OSS is based on a threetier model of care that includes regional stroke centres, district stroke centres and community
hospitals across Ontario. Occupational therapists are integrated in all aspects of the province’s
stroke system. The OSN has been an exemplary leader and facilitator of partnerships
necessary to transform a system and effective positive change that can affect the lives of those
at risk of or living with the outcomes of stroke.
Through its membership in the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care ER/ALC Rehab/CCC
Expert Panel, the OSN established stroke rehabilitation standards of care across all sectors of
the health system - acute care, inpatient and outpatient rehab and community. Ontario
occupational therapists applaud the stroke rehabilitation standards of care and the recognition
the OSN affords to rehabilitation and indeed, occupational therapy, across the continuum of
care. This attention and focus on patient outcomes and recovery enhancement is meaningful
for persons living with stroke and serves the health system well.
The OSN is valued as a supportive partner in stroke rehabilitation, offering collaborative and
regional education and knowledge translation initiatives, facilitating cross-sectoral networking
and sharing of best practice. The Network hosts the Stroke Rehabilitation Resource Centre on
its website, a valuable clinical resource which provides health system planners and clinicians
with descriptions of the stroke rehabilitation standards, tools to support implementation and
success stories.
Most importantly, OSOT recognizes and values the important role the Ontario Stroke Network
has played in raising awareness about stroke, and promoting and achieving better care and
outcomes for persons with stroke in Ontario. We believe Ontarians have been and will
continue to be well served by this leadership organization. Occupational therapists share the
OSN’s positions and advocacy for consistency of access to stroke rehabilitation services across
the province and share the OSN’s vision for… Fewer Strokes. Better Outcomes.
