Distance
Education for
University
Students
If you are currently enrolled
in a degree program at the
University of Guelph, you
may take distance
education courses for a
variety of reasons:
n distance courses provide you with
the flexibility to design your own
study schedule and/or allow you to
avoid timetable conflicts
n distance courses allow you an
opportunity to pick up credits while
away on summer break, on a co-op
job placement, or an international
semester
n you may prefer to learn via distance
education

Open Learning and Educational Support
Open Learning
program
Online Learning
Courses offered via the Internet allow you to experience
studying as part of a group of learners, while at the same
time being able to work independently. You will be able to
communicate and sometimes work with others, within a
structured, paced environment, while engaging in a variety
of active learning strategies.
A general rule of thumb is that you should expect to spend
an average of 10 hours a week on each course taken. There
is, however, some variation in the nature of assignments and
instructor requirements. Completion of distance courses
requires strong, individual study habits. The most successful
distance learners establish a study routine and schedule early
in the semester.
program. Open Learning program students must complete
the same assignments and examinations as those in degree
programs. As a learner in the Open Learning program, you
will have the same workload as a degree program student,
and you will be evaluated using the same standards. Upon
successful completion of a course, you will receive the same
credit weight as someone in a degree program.
Number of Courses
The Open Learning program is a part-time program. Students
may take a maximum of three courses per semester,
depending on your academic experience. If you are currently
working and/or balancing other commitments, you need to
consider this when considering the number of courses to take.
Maximum Flexibility to Meet your
Learning Needs
The Open Learning program is an open admission distanceonly mode of study that provides access to degree-credit
university courses for individuals who wish to study
independently, but are not interested in pursuing a degree at
the University of Guelph at the present time. You may register
in the Open Learning program, even if you are enrolled in
another post secondary educational institution or program.
The Open Learning program extends the academic resources
of the university to those interested in personal enrichment,
professional updating or eventual application to a degree

outcomes. Course manuals and DVDs may augment the content of some online
courses. Information about how to obtain course materials is available on our website.
Most courses also have required textbooks which can be purchased online, or by phone
