Communications Intern
Pacific Institute
Founded in 1987 and based in Oakland, California, the Pacific Institute works to develop
solutions to the related challenges around environmental protection, economic development,
and human well-being from the local to the international levels. Since its inception, the Institute
has aimed to generate fundamental change in how threats to sustainability are perceived and
solved. We use science, economics, and practical public policy tools to analyze risks and identify
solutions to global and local water challenges. The 3E’s of sustainability—environment,
economy, and equity—provide guidance and balance to our efforts.
Position Description
The Communications Intern enhances the Pacific Institute’s effectiveness by promoting our
work to the media, policymakers, academic and scientific communities, and the general public.
Responsibilities
Media Relations
 Act as the primary media liaison, including screening calls and emails from media
representatives, setting up staff interviews, and preparing staff for interviews.
 Track and record in the database media representatives’ contact information and email
correspondence.
 Track and record in the database the Pacific Institute’s media coverage.
 Write press releases for the Pacific Institute’s reports, white papers and fact sheets.
 Mine the news for stories to post on the Institute social media pages.
 Assist in the creation of compelling messages that describes the Institute’s work and
impact for use with the media and funders.
Other Responsibilities
 Proofread a variety of documents, including reports, press releases, web content
written by staff, and donor-related collateral materials.
 With direction from the Communications Associate, update and write new copy for the
website.
 Contribute expertise in the areas of media engagement and public outreach to the
Pacific Institute’s overall strategic planning.
Required Qualifications
 Currently enrolled in or a recent graduate of an undergraduate or graduate journalism
or communications program at a university or college.
 Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
 Ability to write and proofread at a high professional level.
 Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work closely and constructively with others.
 The ability to manage time effectively, handle multiple tasks, and set and meet
deadlines.
 Flexibility, curiosity, go-getter attitude, and a sense of humor.
Additional Desired Qualifications
 Familiarity working directly with media representatives.
 Experience working at a media outlet.
 Demonstrated interest in and a commitment to environmental sustainability, including
familiarity with the literature, technology, and players in the field.
