WiFiIT Simply Web www.northumbria.ac.uk/it Simply Web Windows 7 & 8, Vista and Mac About Simply Web Use Simply Web as the quickest route to the internet with your laptop or tablet. Ideal when you don’t need access to the files on the University U Drive. You can use Simply Web when downloading the Citrix Client for use with desktop ANYWHERE. For details see the WiFi IT desktop ANYWHERE booklet. Connecting to WiFi You can connect to University WiFi networks in most student and staff areas on campus using a variety of devices including, laptops, tablets, mobiles, iPhones, iPads. However, please choose the most appropriate network for your needs. Choose the Right Network Smartphones/iPads Laptops and Tablets Laptops and Tablets NU Smartphone Always connect to NU Smartphone if you are using a mobile, smartphone, iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch for both access to the Internet and desktop ANYWHERE NU Simply Web For fast direct access to the internet when you don’t need access to your files or University applications. NU desktop ANYWHERE Access to Student and Staff Desktops when you need to access the files on the U Drive and University applications. Skype via WiFi – If you have your own software you can connect to Skype via NU Smartphone or NU Simply Web. Just choose the right network for your particular device. Other WiFi Networks NU Visitors – For conference or event attendees Eduroam – For visitors from other Universities see www.northumbria.ac.uk/eduroam Internet Access in Halls of Residence The Freewire service is provided by Cablecom for halls on both City and Coach Lane Campuses. Please see your House Manager for more information. In Coach Lane halls students can also use the Northumbria networks in common room areas. For more information on Northumbria Networks see our website at www.northumbria.ac.uk/wifi Simply Web for Windows You will need to check that your WiFi device has the following settings enabled. (Note: You only need to do this the first time you use Simply Web and changing these settings will not affect any settings you have enabled for other WiFi networks). Windows 7 and Vista Windows 8 Click Start Button Right click on WiFi icon Click Control Panel Click Open Network and Sharing Center Click Network and Sharing Center (if you can’t see this click Network and Internet to proceed) Click Set up a new connection or network Select Manually connect to a WiFi network then click In Network Name type NU Simply Web (this is case sensitive) From the security drop down menu select WPA2-Enterprise. This will automatically fill in the encryption type as AES If your device does not support WPA2 your supplier may offer a free upgrade. Contact your supplier for instructions UNTICK Start this connection automatically Then click The message Successfully added NU Simply Web will be displayed. Select Change connection settings Select the Security tab Check that Protected EAP(PEAP) has been pre-selected as authentication method If your device does not support Protected EAP (PEAP) contact your supplier UNTICK Remember my credentials for this connection each time I’m logged on (Win7 & Win8) Or Cache user information for subsequent connections to this network (Vista) Click Settings UNTICK Validate Server Certificate This may say Verify the server’s identity by validating the certificate Click Configure UNTICK Automatically use my Windows logon name and password and click OK in all dialog boxes for the settings to be accepted Close the Successfully added NU Simply Web box still open on your screen Now you can log on to Simply Web Windows 7 & 8 Vista Click the WiFi Connection icon on the bottom right of your screen Double click the WiFi Connection icon on the bottom right of your screen Click Connect to a Network Select NU Simply Web and click Select NU Simply Web and click Click Enter/Select additional logon information In the Network Authentication box enter your Northumbria username and password In the Network Authentication box enter your Northumbria username and password You can now open your web browser and access the internet in the usual way. If you would like to access your Northumbria email go to the University homepage at www.northumbria.ac.uk and click the Email link. Connection Problem? If you are still encountering connection problems you may need to check that you have the latest Windows Updates and drivers installed. To check this, use your own internet service provider to connect and go to: Win7/Vista: Start > Control Panel > Windows Update Win8: Settings > Control Panel > System and Security > Windows Update You should also make sure that you have the latest anti-virus updates installed. Our recommendation for free protection against viruses, spyware, and other malicious software on your home computer or laptop is Microsoft Security Essentials available at www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/ Simply Print Print from your own laptop, WiFi device or smartphone direct to a University printer. Simply Print uses your print credits just the same as from a University computer www.northumbria.ac.uk/simplyprint For more details see the Print IT – Guide to Student Printing or search in KnowHow Simply Web for Mac Make sure that your WiFi connection is switched on Choose NU Simply Web from the list of WiFi networks available When prompted enter your Northumbria username and password At the Verify Certificate screen click You can now open your web browser and access the internet in the usual way. If you would like to access your Northumbria email go to the University homepage at www.northumbria.ac.uk and click the Email link.
