NORTH RIVER CHURCH OF CHRIST
Pure and Undefiled Religion
James wrote: “Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.” (James
1:27). Religion, according to the Word of God, is not simply a collection of propositional
truths to be believed. While such truths are set forth in it as its foundational basis in what
is termed “the apostles’ doctrine” (Acts 2:42), Christianity is to be a religion of practicality
as well. It has to have practical application and expression. It is preeminently a life-style.
It has to be lived.
One aspect of that has to do with the care of orphans and widows. In ancient times, as
often today, these two groups were the most vulnerable to exploitation and abuse, regardless of which society was dominant. Even in ancient Israel they suffered terribly from
injustice and neglect.
The word translated “visit” in the Greek text of James 1:27 is a word meaning “to care
for, to attend to the needs of.” Thus, James binds upon Christians the obligation as an
expression of the kind of religious dedication God desires to care for orphans (lit. those
“bereft of parental care”) and widows. There are other texts bearing on the subject and
the limitations and nature of this benevolence, but it should not be lost on us that God is
deeply concerned that care for these two groups be paramount in the conduct of those
naming the name of Christ. A society that cares not for the weakest and most vulnerable
in its midst is doomed to extinction. In the writing prophets of the Old Testament, God
repeatedly thundered warning against ancient Israel for mistreatment of these groups,
and ultimately executed His own justice upon the nation in large part for their neglect.
The North River Church of Christ takes seriously this charge from James given by the
inspiration of God. We seek to care for orphans and widows. We are engaged in good
works to help alleviate the suffering in these categories. Come and see!
Our services are at 10:00 A.M. for Bible Study each Sunday; 11:00 A.M. & 6:00 P.M. each
Sunday for Worship; and 7:00 P.M. each Wednesday for Bible Study. We meet at 13885
U.S. Highway 301 N. in Parrish, FL. We have Bible correspondence courses free upon
request. You may contact us at (941) 776-1134 and visit us on the web at www.northriverchurchofchrist.org. Come and be our guest!

Individual
As a young boy growing up, three men stood out when it came to golf: the great Ben
Hogan, the unbeatable Byron Nelson and the legendary Sam Snead. Although there
were other good golfers, these three men moved the needle when it came to tournament golf. Later, another group of golfers took their place as the best of the best.
Known as ‘The Big Three’ you had the King, Arnold Palmer; the Black Knight, Gary
Player; and the Golden Bear, Jack Nicklaus. Like Hogan, Nelson and Snead before
them The Big Three highlighted every event and drove thousands of spectators to the
course and the television to watch them compete. These two combinations of great
threesomes carried golf for several generations.
Some great golfers appeared on the scene from time to time: the likes of Billy Casper,
Greg Norman, Seve Ballesteros, Tom Watson, Sir Nick Faldo and Phil Michelson.
Many years later a young, Tiger Woods pounced on the scene and dominated the
game like no other. But with all these golfers no great rivalry ever developed. The
game of golf lacked that ‘Bird versus Johnson’ or ‘Ali versus Frazier’ feel that drives
so many competitions.
Until today!
Enter golf’s newest winning trifecta: Rory McIlroy, Rickie Fowler and Jordan Speith.
The excitement these three young stars are creating has the potential to equal the epic
battles we witnessed from other eras. The charisma of the King is felt with Rickie
Fowler; the towering shots we witnessed from Jack are felt with Rory’s booming
drives; and the determination we saw in the Black Knight are traits found in young,
Jordan Speith. Can Rory win 11 in a row like Lord Nelson? Can Rickie’s fluid swing
continue for years and years like Slammin Sammy? Can Gentleman Jordan beat all
the odds and Follow the Sun like the great Ben Hogan?
Only time will tell, but based on what we’ve seen so far, it looks like golf has found
a winning trifecta to carry golf for many years. The names may have changed but
the results should be the same: three great golfers that together can produce enough
excitement to ensure golf’s future successes for all to enjoy!

May News from Williams Elementary School
Thank You for A Very Special Staff Appreciation Week!
Three Retiring Teachers Honored
Weathermen Visit Students
Nancy McCabe, Kindergarten, Pat McKinley and Nancy Watterson, 2nd grade, were
recognized for their many years with the Manatee County School District at the
recent school board meeting. They are retiring at the end of the school year. Best
wishes to these fantastic teachers!
Williams Elementary’s 3rd thru 5th grade students were recently visited by ABC 7’s
Chief Meteorologist, Bob Harrigan and Meteorologist John Scalzi. Mr. Harrigan
spoke to the students about his job as a meteorologist and also how important it is to
be careful during bad weather and lightning. Mr. Scalzi also talked about the weather
and how to be storm ready. To the delight of the students, he performed experiments
to show how hurricanes happen and how clouds form. Students enjoyed meeting
both Mr. Harrigan and Mr. Scalzzi first hand. Thank you for visiting Williams Elementary and showing us how to be storm ready!
Spring Book Fair

Williams Thanks Volunteers
The Spring Book Fair was a huge success! There were many fantastic books, posters, pencils etc. available for all age groups. We appreciate the students and their
families who supported our Spring Book Fair. Keep on Reading!

for providing pizzas for this year’s
students who earned
enough wolfhowls
to be Principal and
Assistant Principal.
“Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening
ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.” -Leo Buscaglia

Parrish Civic Association Corner
Dear Friends:
June 2015
While the official date of the start of summer is June 21st the heat, humidity and afternoon rains make it feel like it has already arrived. We sure
didn’t have much of a spring this year. Let’s hope the forecasters are right
with their storm predictions for our hurricane season.
Y Camp at DaySpring
With the start of summer comes the start of camps for the kids. A few
weeks ago I had an opportunity to visit the DaySpring facility on 25th
street which is the site for this year’s Parrish Y Branch summer camp. I
had driven past the entrance to DaySpring many times but had never gone
in to look at it. It is truly a beautiful spot with wonderful facilities – the
kids that attend the camp are going to have a very entertaining and educational experience. Thanks to the people at DaySpring for allowing the Y
to use it.
Fort Hamer Bridge Progress
Work on the new Fort Hamer Bridge has ramped up and the steady hammering sound of the pilings being driven into place can be heard all over
Parrish. Someone stopped me in Publix last week to ask how many piling
will be used for the bridge – I am not sure but we’ll try to find out and let
you know. Several people had asked exactly where the new road from the
bridge will intersect Fort Hamer Road and the contractor has painted a red
line on Fort Hamer to mark the spot. The line is close to the northern end
of the pond beside the entrance to the Islands of River Wilderness. Work
has also started on the northern end of Fort Hamer Road. The road will
be widened and some of the ditches will be piped to accommodate a new
sidewalk.
Widening of US 301 from Moccasin Wallow to CR 675
Two other projects are scheduled to start later this year in Parrish – FDOT
will be widening US 301 from 675 to Moccasin Wallow and the County
will be doing extensive work at Fort Hamer Park that will help accommodate boaters. The 301 widening project will make this stretch of 301
a four lane road with a turn lane. Limited landscape will be added and
street lights like those along 301 between Old Tampa/Erie Road to 675
will be added. This work is scheduled to begin this fall. The work at Fort
Hamer Park will also begin this fall and will reconfigure the boat trailer
parking, do work on drainage and some limited work on the boat ramp.
Traffic Light for US 301 and CR 675 Intersection
Many of you responded to our call for petitions asking FDOT to install
a stop light at the intersection of 675 and 301. So far, FDOT has not responded in a favorable manner. This is a very dangerous intersection and
while FDOT’s “warrant” process may not justify a light, people who drive
through this intersection frequently are well aware of the safety issues
involved. Thanks for your response – we are not finished with this by a
long shot.
Please feel free to contact me with any ideas or concerns about Parrish.

Message from the Membership Chairman
Dear Friends:
The Annual Membership Drive for the Parrish Civic Association began in January
for 2015. Many of you have responded and mailed in your dues and we really appreciate your support for the Parrish Civic Association. You can still join if you have
not already done so by filling out the form below.
We appreciate your generosity. The only source of revenue for the Parrish Civic Association is dues. Your dues go to help our organization in many ways: supporting
the Parrish Children’s Christmas Party, funding for the annual Heritage Day Parade
and next year’s fifth Chili Cook Off (signs, posters, publicity), helping to pay for the
Ys Fall Festival held in October, helping pay for bringing the Board of County Commissioners to our PCA meetings, bringing other guest speakers to meetings and many
other activities performed by the Parrish Civic Association.
We now have over 400 members of the Parrish Civic Association. That’s a very
good number of people in the community who are interested in the Parrish community and making it the best place to live in Manatee County.
If you are interested in helping out on any of our activities and want to be on a committee, please contact Ben Jordan, our President, at ben.jordan@verizon.net. We
would be pleased if you would like to help. We have already met with several people
new to the area who are getting involved in our community’s activities. It is a lot of
fun and a great group of people who work to make a lot of activities occur.
And, volunteering is also fun. Every year, we need people for the Heritage Day
Festival and Chili Cook Off and Parrish Arts Council (another concert is planned for
Saturday, October 24) as well as other activities during the year.
We hope to see you soon in and around our Parrish community!
