by Ryan Janney for this production of Much Ado About Nothing
Sing-A-Long!
Cielito Lindo
De la sierra morena, cielito lindo, vienen bajando
Un par de ojitos negros, cielito lindo de contrabando
Ese lunar que tienes, cielito lindo junto a la boca
No se lo des a nadie, cielito lindo que a mi me toca
Chorus:
Ay ay ay ay!
Canta y no llores
Porque cantando se alegran
Cielito lindo los corazones
Ay ay ay ay!
Canta y no llores
Chorus:
Ay ay ay ay!
Canta y no llores
Porque cantando se alegran

Brit and Cherrelle will mount a fully-realized production
of a play by an African American playwright. The
production will celebrate the African American
experience. It will also celebrate the collective

“play español”℠ uses elements of the TPR (Total Physical
Response) curriculum to involve most senses in the learning process.
Focus is on comprehensible input, while developing confidence to
produce Spanish through playful activities.
Through short stories, puppets, songs, and games,
children become engaged in weekly activities. Parents receive updates
and tools to use at home for a more natural learning experience and to
support longer retention.
Ken is a well-known actor in the Jacksonville community,
having played leading and supporting roles in over 30
productions at local theaters, including Theatre
Jacksonville, Players-by-the Sea and The Limelight. Ken’s
UNF credits include “Prospero” in The Tempest,
“Tartuffe” in Tartuffe, and major roles in King Lear, The
Late Straight News, and many more. In 1982, Ken starred
in The Taming of the Shrew, the very first production
staged in UNF’s then newly built Andrew A. Robinson,
Jr. Theater. In 1986, he played the role of “Leonato” in
UNF’s first production of Much Ado About Nothing on the
University Green. We wish you were here, Ken.
Specializing in conversational Spanish for kids – practical
phrases children can use regularly – “play español” provides tools to
mix and match vocabulary and create usable phrases. There’s
continuity of material presented from week to week with a clear
progression in mind. In addition to the obvious benefits, studies show
children who experience a second language early in life, display an
increased ability to excel in other academic areas.
“play español”℠ helps children:
 have greater confidence/self-esteem by celebrating
success in completing “play español” activities.

get exposure to a new language in fun and memorable
ways, making learning a second language a positive
experience
that children will embrace for life.

The Time
The early 1800s
The Place
Messina, a town near the Mission San Luis Rey de Francia
There will be a fifteen-minute intermission between acts.
The Story
ACT I
"Some, Cupid kills with arrows, some with traps." –3.1
Señora Leonata, the head of a household of women that includes her
sister Antonia, her daughter Hero, and her niece Beatriz, receives happy
news. Her long-time friend, Don Pedro, his brother Don Juan, with
whom he has recently been reconciled, Count Claudio and Captain
Benedick, whose long-standing “merry war” of wit with Beatriz
provides endless diversion, are on their way to Messina following a
successful military campaign. Leonata and Antonia plan an evening of
festivities to celebrate their return. Claudio reveals his love for Hero to
Don Pedro, who offers to intervene on the young gentleman’s behalf. At
a masked dance, Don Pedro woos and wins Hero for Claudio. The
engagement is announced and the wedding date set. In keeping with the
Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing
spirit of revelry, Don Pedro and Leonata, with the help of Hero and
Claudio, play matchmaker, plotting to bring together the confirmed
bachelors, Benedick and Beatriz. In the meantime, the disaffected
Don Juan, with the help of Leonata’s servant Borachio and his
friend Conrade, devise a plot to sabotage the marriage plans and
disgrace Hero the night before the intended wedding. Sherriff
Dogberry and his officers discovering the plot against Hero, arrest the
conspirators, and bring them away for questioning.
Fifteen-minute intermission.
ACT II
The next morning at the wedding, Count Claudio publicly shames
Hero, leaving the fainting young woman for dead. The Padre devises a
plan to take advantage of the town’s belief that Hero has died of grief.
Benedick promises to challenge Claudio to a duel and Borachio
admits his part in the plot. In reparation for his misdeeds, Claudio
agrees to marry Antonia’s supposed “daughter.” At a midnight vigil,
Don Pedro and Claudio proclaim Hero’s innocence to the people of
Messina and exonerate her good name. The grief-stricken Claudio is
haunted by Hero’s spirit, who in a moment of compassion saves
Claudio from his own demons. After the battle, Claudio falls asleep
at Hero’s tomb. The next morning brings redemption and
reconciliation.
About the Music
Composed and arranged by Ryan Janney, the music for Much Ado
About Nothing is a mixture of Classical and Post-Romantic Mexican
songs. It consists of everything from folk tunes to traditional hymns,
which gives the music wonderful variety. Mr. Janney used
combinations of brass and woodwind colors to orchestrate the power
and beauty of Mexican music. Inspired by Shakespeare’s words, Ryan
has created a musical score for Much Ado About Nothing that touches
deep into the soul. The music ranges from funny folk songs, shifts to a
mournful hymn, and then goes into a festive dance. The music has the
ability to make the tears flow, bring goose bumps to the back of the
neck, even make the foot start tapping! Ryan has captured every
aspect of Mexican music, and has taken it deeper into our emotions.
His composition for “Pardon Goddess of the Night” makes the tomb
scene a haunting favorite. The cast thanks Ryan Janney for making
Messina a great place to visit, fall in love, and leave with regret.

Sigh No More
Sigh no more, ladies, sigh no more
Men were deceivers ever,
One foot on sea and one on shore,
To one thing constant never
Then sigh not so, but let them go,
And be you blithe and bonny,
Converting all your sounds of woe
Into hey nonny nonny
Hey nonny nonny!
Hey nonny nonny!
Sigh no more, sigh no more, ladies!
Sigh no more, sigh no more, ladies!
Sing no more ditties, sing no mo,
Of dumps so dull and heavy,
The fraud of men was ever so,
Since summer first was leavy
Then sigh not so, but let them go,
And be you blithe and bonny,
Converting all your sounds of woe
Into hey nonny nonny
Hey nonny nonny!
Hey nonny nonny!
Sigh no more, sigh no more, ladies!
