Marie Canal National Historic Site, is this possible? Yes! The Sault Ste. Marie Canal National Historic Site has a variety of rental packages from photography to grounds available for you to choose from. Check out the Packages section or give us a call for more details. When do I need to reserve my date, and do you take a deposit? Bookings are taken on a first come, first serve basis. All photography permits must be paid in full on the day of booking to secure the date and time of your event. For Indoor and Grounds Rental packages, a $100.00 non-refundable administration fee is required to secure your date and time. The remainder of the fee is due two weeks prior to your event date. If I need to cancel my date, by when would I need to do it? A minimum of two business days is required to cancel your date. A refund of the full package price minus the administration fee will be returned to you. Will the general public be allowed in the area while my ceremony is taking place? The location of the ceremony is reserved for your exclusive use and Parks Canada will do its best to ensure only your guests access the designated area. Security or a Parks Canada staff person will be on hand in the event of any confusion. However, the Sault Ste. Marie Canal is a public place and as such we can not guarantee the same level of privacy as an indoor location. Can I have a rehearsal before the wedding? Yes! You can have a rehearsal prior to the wedding at no additional cost. We ask that you inform Parks Canada of your rehearsal date and time as soon as possible so we can ensure that the space is available. What is the seating capacity of the West Garden? The West Garden is a large space and can comfortably accommodate 100 – 150 chairs in a theatre-style set up. When can I set up for my ceremony/reception? Most couples find that 1.5 – 2 hours before is adequate. This minimizes the amount of time your items are outside but gives you enough time to set up. For tented receptions more lead time is needed. The size of your wedding will impact the set up time. Consult with staff for more guidance. Do you provide chairs and other rental items? Parks Canada does not have any chairs or other items available for rent. You will need to arrange for anything you require (chairs, sound system, aisle runners, flowers, tents, etc.) through independent companies. There are several in Sault Ste. Marie and you can find them in the Yellow Pages. Do you provide electricity for my sound system? Limited power is provided. Power is provided around the Greenhouse and Administration Building and is standard 15 amps. Do you provide security for my chairs and other items? Security is included in the Indoor, Grounds and Full Photography packages for the duration of your event. It is not included in the set up/tear down portion of the event. Additional security is required if items are left unattended on site before or after your event times (i.e. tents, portable toilets or generators). Parks Canada does not assume responsibility for items left on site. Do you have onsite washrooms? The use of the washrooms located inside the Superintendent’s Residence are included in the Grounds, Indoor and Premium Photography packages. The washrooms in the building have a capacity to service 40 people. If more than 40 people are attending your event, it is your responsibility to provide additional washroom facilities. If renting the grounds around the Administration Building, public washrooms are available, however for events larger than 200 people, it is your responsibility to provide additional washroom facilities. What happens if it rains? Unfortunately, the Sault Ste. Marie Canal does not have a covered area that can be used for your wedding ceremony in case of rain. We strongly recommend that you have an alternate plan in place. Most reception venues will allow you to use their space as a backup location. Do you offer parking for my guests? There are three parking lots available for your guests. If you require additional parking please consult with a Parks Canada staff member. Do you allow confetti, rose petals or other items to be scattered? Parks Canada does not allow the use of rice, confetti, rose petals or other items to be scattered. Following your event, the site must be left in the condition in which it was found. Do you allow pets to be part of the ceremony? Pets are welcome to be part of your ceremony provided they are on a leash and you clean up after them. Will there be other events happening at the Sault Ste. Marie Canal on my wedding day? The Sault Ste. Marie Canal is a busy place and is always open to the public. Parks Canada will not typically book an event at the Superintendent’s Residence that will conflict with your wedding. Please note that other areas of the site may be rented by other parties. Are there conditions to installing decorations/movable objects (i.e. tents, arbors) on site? The site has two designated areas for tents that require pegs to be inserted in the ground for support. The area to the west of the Greenhouse can accommodate a maximum tent size of 40’ X 60’. The area by the Administration Building is much larger and can accommodate multiple tents. For a better understanding of the area, consult with a Parks Canada staff member. Tents not requiring pegs may be used in other areas but must be discussed with Parks Canada staff and pre-approved. Do I require insurance for my event? A $2 million Third Party Liability Insurance is required for all functions held on Parks Canada property. The insurance may be obtained through your insurance company. Proof of insurance will need to be submitted two weeks prior to your event. Thank You! Thank you for considering the Sault Ste. Marie Canal National Historic Site for your event.
