Ntebeti Ntini in Grade 6 D wrote a beautiful story about a library book, appealing to humans to take
good care of it. Taking care is an essential part of daily activities. If we were to take a day in our lives
and take note of each time we did or did not ‘take care’, we would have a greater urgency to not
only take care of things that are important to us, but we would make a greater effort to take care of
things that do not belong to us.

Ntebeti Ntini is our Learner of the Month for April. She is a dedicated, hardworking and pleasant

I AM A BOOK - MY LIFE IN A BOOK CADII
Days pass by without being read. Sometimes I wonder if humans remember me! When
they close the lids of their bags, I immediately know that I will never see sunlight for a few
more hours. They stuff objects into their bags and I get squashed. When someone takes
me home from the library I feel very important, but then I feel worthless because they do
not even open the first page of me! It was an enjoyable life in the library! It was a good
feeling to be left on the bookshelves where I was not squashed.
I must say, I had many book friends that were much friendlier than grumpy textbooks!
Cadii’s are very book friendly but the users are most certainly not. When the humans
race with their cadii’s, I feel like throwing up a whole chapter! It is revolting how they
have time to run and race, but not to sit down and read a good book. Often there are
people who treat me with care and love reading me, but not always. It gets lonely here
in a cadii, but what choice do I have? When they finally read me, their hands are filthy
and wet!
Suddenly I like the cadii much better. I hate it when they leave me in a bag with water.
Let me just tell you, water and books do not go well together. The water feels cold
against my skin (pages) and my printed words begin to blur. I feel sorry for my next
reader. I get abused a lot by humans leaving me in their bags. When I was first bought I
looked beautiful but now I look terrible! My pages are mouldy and have folds. I thought I
would just tell you humans how much pain you’ve caused me. Luckily and
misfortunately you can read but you can’t talk to books. (That is why I have written this
and not talking to you verbally.)
I hope that we now have an understanding as to how I would like to be treated. The
next time you want to stuff me into your bag, please reconsider. Place me neatly in a
folder (so that I am safe). You would not like it if I was to stuff you into a bag, with mean
textbooks and occasionally with food and spilling water.
This is my story in a cadii.

EASTER EGG HUNT GRADE 4-7
Our Easter Egg Hunt which took place on the 25th March 2015 was a wonderful and successful
event. The Hunt was based on the same concept as the Amazing Race. Learners had to decipher
various codes to move to different points in the hunt. The learners thoroughly enjoyed it. Thank you to
all our learners who donated Easter Eggs. A total of 3 285 Easter eggs were received, many of which
were used for prizes, surprises and rewards along the various points. Easter eggs were also given to
the children in the Children’s Cancer Ward. Thank you to all our parents and learners for your
contributions; and especially thank you to our learners for their participation in a truly memorable
Easter Egg Hunt.

DEBATING
Well done to the debating team for putting up such a good argument against Heuwelkruin.
Although we did not win the debate, we received some well-deserved praise from the adjudicators.
Congratulations to Patricia Chaminuka for being nominated as Speaker of the Day. She impressed
the adjudicators with her fiery speech. Thank you to Mrs Ganchi for her support, we certainly
appreciate it.

MINI NETBALL FESTIVAL
What a super fun day for our Mini-Netball stars and coaches on Saturday, 25 April 2015. Not only did
we all enjoy the day, we also learned a lot more about Mini-Netball. Each player received a
certificate for participation.

KFC MINI CRICKET DAY
On Saturday, 9 May 2015, 13 of our Grade R learners enjoyed a wonderful morning at the KFC MiniCricket Fun Day with Miss Bergh, Mrs Baber, Miss Masoga, Mrs de Jager and Ms Moodie. The morning
started with a coaching clinic that taught the learners and coaches new skills to apply in the game.
After a break, we had the privilege of playing a game to test our new skills.
We would like to thank KFC for the opportunity to be involved. The Grade R learners were most
impressed with their new t-shirts and medals. A special word of thanks to all our PEPPS parents, for
their support and involvement on the day.

Tournament in June: Rorisang Raphahlelo, Lunghile Ngobeni and Chika Mabitsela. The reserves are
Bokang Mathabathe and Rofhiwa Nevhutalu. An exceptional achievement!

PEPPS U/11 FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT – 9 MAY 2015
The PEPPS u/11 Football Tournament turned out to be a wonderful day with beautiful weather.
Congratulations to Mr Mokoena for planning and organising this tournament. It was a great success
and we all enjoyed the day. A special mention must go to the members of the Parents Association,
who came to help on the day. Thank you to all our parents who came to support their boys while
they played. The PEPPS team played in the A pool and herewith the results of the day:

PEPPS vs PCS 2-4 lost (It was a tough match!)
Unfortunately, our boys did not accumulate sufficient points to qualify for the semi-finals, but we are
still very proud of them because they showed courage and good skills.

CYCLING
The PEPPS cycling team is excited to announce that we are now forming a second team in order to
encourage our younger learners to become enthusiastic about cycling and join the team! Cycling is
now an official school sport and so far we have been very successful in our achievements and have
made quite a name for ourselves in the school circuit. We also have a beautiful new team cycling
shirt and we proudly wear it at each racing event.
The "Falcon" team is for riders who are already experienced, have excellent technical skills and are
very fit. The training days for them will be on Monday and Friday afternoons at the Polokwane Game
Reserve from 2:30pm till 4:00pm.
The "Kestrel" team is for our beginner and less experienced riders. They will learn baseline riding skills,
technical skills, and increased their fitness levels. Once they have completed their training in this
team and the coach feels that they can advance to the Falcon team, there will be a qualifier to see
whether they can move forward and join the advanced group.
The Kestrel team will be training at the school on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:00pm to 3:30pm with
Mrs Grace Clayton who has volunteered to coach the team. We are really looking forward to
developing a team of excellence with the huge amount of time and effort that is going to be put
into training your child.
For further information on what is required of your child to join the training, please enquire of Mrs
Clayton or Mrs Smith and we will assist you with everything you need.

CHESS
The chess team started term two off with a Provincial Qualifying Tournament on the 18th of April.
On the 29th of April we hosted a League Tournament against Northern Academy Primary School.
Sadly, we lost 5-7. Connor Booth and Daniel Schroeder played very well and won both rounds.
On the 2nd of May, Connor took part in a Grand Prix Tournament and he came seventh. A great
achievement!
We look forward to the conclusion of the League Tournaments on the 23rd of May. Our under ten
team have been invited to play. This is an achievement in itself as these tournaments are attended
by invitation only.
Our last Provincial Qualifying Tournament will be on the 6th of June.
Sadly, we had to bid Robin and Daniel Schroeder farewell, as they have relocated to Springs in
Gauteng. Indeed a great loss and they will be sorely be missed.

PARENTS
All parents whose children come to school by taxi, bus or are in a lift club, are encouraged to make
sure the driver of the vehicle has a legitimate driver’s license and a PDP license.
Spotlight
This edition’s focus is on READING WITH YOUR CHILD.
Thank you to all the parents that made the effort to attend the
talk on Tuesday 28th April. Herewith a few reminders from the
evening:

A child needs at least 1000 ‘lap hours’ before they are ready to read.

Reading at bedtime is for relaxation and should not be used as an opportunity to teach your
child to read.

Even if your child can read, it is vital to still read to them. Choose engaging stories that they
may not be able to read but will inspire them to improve their reading skills.

Your child will have to learn phonics before they start to read. This means the sound the
graphemes (letter shape) make in most words. Start with six letters per week and use these
letters to build words. When they have mastered this skill, move onto diagraphs. Diagraphs are
two graphemes that make a single phoneme e.g. sh and ch. It is important to pronounce the
sounds correctly. Oxford Reading Owl online has a brilliant video clip of Ruth Miskin
demonstrating this for parents.

A child needs to be able to read fluently in order to comprehend what they have read. This
does not mean that you cannot begin to develop comprehension skills from a young age. If
you read a story to your child you can then ask them questions about the story in order to
develop comprehension and memory skills.

Children who read daily or are read to daily increase their vocabulary by 4 000 to 12 000
words a year.
The next information sharing evening will be about Higher Order Thinking. The date will be confirmed.

Many learners are attending detention due to homework not been done or completed at home. A
teacher focus group has been formed to discuss our way forward concerning the purpose and value
of giving homework. As soon as we have discussed the outcome of the focus group discussion,
parents will be informed of our way forward concerning giving homework.

The BIG WALK is on Satuday 30 May 2015 at the school and it promises to be even more exciting, with
lots of prizes to be won, exciting games, and lots of music. The following prizes are up for grabs;

must be returned to the school no later than Friday 22 May to be eligible for the prizes. In order to
assist us with the administration we kindly request no monetary donations less than R 5. The penalty
charge for lost forms is R 200.00.
It is a compulsory school day and register will be taken.
