VIENNA OPEN MEDICAL INSTITUTE Meeting Point for Medicine
„In the 19th and early 20th century, the
Vienna School of Medicine and the Viennese
hospitals were considered the gold standard.
Due to the terrible national socialist terror
and the Shoa, Europe and Austria lost many
of its best physicians and scientists. Europe
was divided in East and West. In those days,
Vienna situated in the centre of Europe
next to the Iron Curtain served as the vita
bridge facilitating the exchange of ideas,
knowledge and people. Today we live in
a united Europe where people can move
from East to West and vice versa. And the

them of this vital resource. When our

VISION
Intensifying Experience Exchange
The Vienna Open Medical Institute (Vienna
OMI) was established by the Vienna
Hospital Association, the American Austrian
Foundation, the Medical University of
Vienna, the Austrian Academy of Sciences,
the Viennese Society of Physicians and the
Viennese Medical Chamber to promote
Vienna as a leading center for postgraduate
education and experience exchange in
medicine.
The Vienna OMI provides clinical rotations
in Viennese hospitals to English speaking
physicians from countries in transition that
will benefit from state of the art education in
their medical specialties and act as multipliers
in their home countries by sharing the
knowledge they have acquired during their
observership in Austria. In order to achieve
this, the Open Medical Institute was founded
by the American Austrian Foundation in 1993
using a three step approach – knowledge
transfer through seminars, experience
exchange through observerships and capacity
building through distance learning – through
which physicians achieve excellence.
The Vienna OMI provides major support for
observerships and capacity building. Through
multiple observership opportunities, these
young doctors can repeatedly update their
clinical and managerial skills and strengthen
their relationships with their Viennese mentors
and colleagues, building a network that spans
all of Europe.

“The Vienna Hospital Association is one of
the largest healthcare facilities in Europe.
It consists of 11 hospitals, 11 geriatric
centers and three nursing homes. About
32.000 employees look after the wellbeing of the patients in their care and
thus represent the key success factor of
Vienna‘s exceptional health care system.
The Viennese school of Medicine is
internationally known and the medical care
provided by Vienna hospitals is among
the best in the world, e.g. the treatment
of accidents, strokes, cardiac infarctions,
transplants, pregnancy care, obstetrics
and orthopaedics - it also enjoys a global
reputation in oncology.
Each observer is matched with a mentor,
who oversees his or her clinical activities.
The Vienna Hospital Association covers
the observers room and board for the
duration of their stay.
We wish to provide our observers with
the best possible experience in order
to make their stay unforgettable.
I am personally committed to hosting
colleagues from all over the world at
the Vienna Hospital Association’s state
of the art hospitals.“

“The Medical University of Vienna is not
only the largest medical organisation in
Austria, it is also one of the most important
top-level research institutions in Europe
and provides Europe‘s largest hospital, the
Vienna General Hospital in Vienna, with all
of its medical staff.
With 31 university departments and
clinics located in the Vienna General
Hospital area, 12 centres of medical theory
and a large number of highly specialised
laboratories it also ranks among the main
European top research institutions in the
field of biomedicine.
In its structuring and alignment MedUni
of Vienna relies on the „triple track“
strategy. Research, education and patient
care represent the three cornerstones
of the university‘s system. This enables
medical science to respond flexibly to the
continually changing demands of the state
and society.
7.500 students and 2.300 teaching
personnel on campus and in 13 training
hospitals make it the largest medical
training facility in the German-speaking
area and one of the top training
establishments in Central Europe.“

“The Austrian Academy of Sciences
promotes and conducts open source
basic research. Renowned researchers
from Austria and abroad have formed a
comprehensive knowledge pool covering
a wide array of disciplines for the sake of
progress in science as a whole.
The Academy offers observerships to
talented young scholars in promotion
programs that are committed exclusively
to the standards of the international
scientific community, thus giving highly
qualified junior scientists an opportunity
to develop scientific expertise.
All of the Academy‘s activities are
closely networked at national, EU, and
international levels with university and
non-university partners. The Academy
gives new impetus by taking up new,
forward-looking research. Scientific quality,
innovation potential and sustainability
are the main criteria for the Academy‘s
research profile.
The Austrian Academy of Sciences is
a partner of the Vienna Open Medical
Institute. Its special tasks will be to
familiarize the scholar with Austria’s
biomedical research landscape and
to help promoting and securing the
scientific quality of the exchange
program.“
As centres of excellence, the Academy‘s
research institutions must stand the test
of international competition in the form
of periodic evaluations.

“The Society of Physicians in Vienna was
founded in 1837 during the Golden Age
of the Vienna School of Medicine. Ignaz
Semmelweis, Theodor Billroth, Sigmund
Freud and Karl Landsteiner presented their
pioneering and groundbreaking findings
first to the members of this prestigious
medical society.
Since the very beginning the Society of
Physicians in Vienna was an independent
scientific institution of doctors of all
different disciplines. Scientific discussions
and lectures took and still take place on
a weekly basis and the library houses the
most important medical publications of
the 19th and 20th century. Besides others it
hosts the first volume of the „Lancet“ and
the „New English Journal of Medicine“.
During the last couple of years the Society
underwent extensive modernisation
and renovation and is considered the
Austrian center of medical scientific
communication. The Society of Physicians
in Vienna will provide temporary
membership to all participants of the
Vienna Open Medical Institute, access to
the library and the online services and
serves as a meeting place for international
guests.“

“The Medical Chamber is a dynamic
representative of the medical profession’s
interests and guarantees its future. By
contributing significantly to shaping the
development of public medical education
programs, it serves the community and its
welfare.
On the one hand the Vienna Medical
Chamber represents the professional, social
and economic interests of Viennese doctors,
on the other; it constitutes their responsible
national authority. Amongst other things,
the responsibilities of the chamber are
comprised of, involvement in medical
training, continual medical education,
professional development and medical
practice and their quality assurance, contract
negotiations with social insurance institutions
and collective agreements, admission to
and administration of the medical register,
recognition of foreign medical diplomas,
execution of disciplinary legislation and
arbitration.
At the moment exchange programs are
becoming more and more important as, in
particular in medical science, progress and
globalization advance faster and faster.
Only through an exchange of knowledge
between medical practitioners the
challenges of the 21st century can be solved
in the interest of the patient.
To cope with the upcoming tasks in
medicine and the public health system we
have to be open-minded, interested and
willing to make new experiences, face new
challenges and develop and extend our
medical knowledge from day to day.“

“The OMI-Vienna activities are interesting and helpful for both sides: The fellows from
various countries and the Austrian colleagues benefit from stimulating medical discussions
and such a program also broadens the social and cultural understanding of the involved
parties. Joined scientific programs are made possible and may help to answer questions
that a single institution might have difficulties to approach. Personally I am very glad being
part of the OMI Vienna project which last but not least can also be considered a political
project for friendship among nations and for world peace.”

“I appreciate the OMI activities because it not only improves the medical knowledge of
our visiting colleagues, but also opens our minds and helps us understand different healthand educational systems worldwide. During my work for the American Austrian Foundation
I have not only made friends with my outstanding colleagues from Cornell University/New

„This internship has helped to broaden my knowledge of both medical and socioeconomic
culture between Mongolia and Austria. Being able to observe the interaction between
physicians and patients here in Austria is also subtly different. These differences in culture,
practice technique and bedside manner are best appreciated via direct observership. I was
very impressed by the ability of the staff to work with people from a variety of different

emergence of new medicines, new methods of treatment, that is why it is necessary to us
to learn more and raise our professional level. Thanks to your program, I found myself in
