Please send articles to the temple or directly to editor at abuchan@eastlink.ca Philae Shriners News Spring 2015 Potentate’s Message Greetings to all of the Nobles of Philae Shrine. As I sit down to write this message, the calendar says it is finally March, but the wind chill is -35C, I can’t see the house across the street through the drifting snow, and all of the schools are closed Island wide – again. Still, we are all told that Spring is right around the corner, and we should be soon heading to the beach once again. (at least for those of us who do not have the pleasure of being able to be South for the winter). I wish to thank each and every one of you who have put your trust in me by electing me to be your Potentate for 2015. It is truly an honour and a pleasure, one for which I am most grateful. However, I would like to stress to you that the leadership of your Temple rests not only on the shoulders of the Potentate, but also with the other members of the Divan and your elected representatives. I urge you to give them your support, and do not hesitate to contact any one of us with your comments and suggestions. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all of you who attended the Chief Rabban Night held in January at the Ramada in Dartmouth. A special thank you to the members of the Halifax, Dartmouth, and Island Shrine Clubs for hosting a very successful hospitality suite. The next few months promise to be busy ones with the visitation schedule starting to kick into full gear. Unfortunately, weather has already cased your Chief Rabban and me to miss the Aleppo’s Potentate’s Ball in February. We do, however, look forward to travelling to the North East Shrine Association Mid Winter meetings in Lewiston, Maine (March 9-11) and to the Rhode Island Shriners visitation in April. The Imperial Session will take place, as usual, in July and I hope that as many of you as possible will join with me at the dedication of the new Shriners Hospital – Canada in Montreal on August 20th. It is truly an event of a lifetime, and it promises to be a wonderful time for all. A full schedule of upcoming visitations and events will be available in the soon to be released Philae Directory, and will be published periodically in the Philae News and in or new newsletter. As we head into our busy time of year, I would like all Nobles to focus on what should be one of our main priorities – MEMBERSHIP. Everyone is aware that our numbers have been thinning out and we are not all as young and full of vigor as we once were. We need some new and energetic recruits to bolster our ranks so we may continue to carry our message to the public. Many of us must know some masons who might wish to make a difference in the life of a child through the work of Philae Temple. Spring 2015 Philae Shriners News 3 Assistant Rabban Fundraising is a Top Priority This being my first Shriners news since being elected to Assistant Rabban I would like to thank the Nobles for their support. In return I pledge to work hard and do my best for you. If there’s anything I can do, if you have any suggestions or would like me to come to your club or one of your events please don’t hesitate to ask. The Assistant Rabbans job is to work on fundraising for our Shrine centre. Having said that it’s kind of an odd role. Some of our events are set up the year before, like the fezeroo. So what you see going on now, the credit actually belongs to our Chief Rabban Harold Farrow and the Fezeroo Chairman Isaac Gray. They have done a great job including getting a cheaper printing price for the tickets and getting those tickets out quickly. One thing we have been looking at is machines that will allow a smart phone to take debit and credit cards for those that “don’t have any cash”. If you would like more information please email me. Also for next year I hope all the clubs will help secure locations to sell fezeroo tickets in 2016 Other fundraisers, like the calendars don’t start a year in advance but almost. I would ask that you start accumulating pictures for the 2016 calendar. Club events, patients parades anything. We have 14 clubs and 12 months, I would like to see something from every club for next year’s calendar. 4 The wharf rats Rally 50/50 is on again for 2015 September 3rd to the 6th. This is great fun and a really good fund raiser for the temple. Previously only a few clubs were represented and I would like to see more clubs out this year. I realize that accommodations are a challenge but if you start looking now there are still some spots available. Annapolis valley conference centre has some good deals including breakfast and a shuttle. The information is on the web site philaeshriners.com I have been discussing a fund raiser with Bobby Curtolla. I was thinking a sock hop with him performing of course, proceeds to the Philae General Fund. This project still in the planning stages but if you have an interest, email me and I will continue to move forward. Although I am thinking of having it in Halifax only because it is where I am and I can get a venue for free, if someone wants to help outside the City or Province to put it together in their home town I would be all for it. In fact we might be able to do more than one? Further if you have any suggestions for fundraising they are always welcome. Working together as a team we will be successful in 2015 That’s about all I can think of for now as it relates to fundraising but I want to throw a little plug out re social events. Last year we had several new events, we had a hot lunch for every Philae Shriners News Spring 2015 stated meeting, a Hatfield farms dinner, lobster dinner on a boat, wine tour, dinner theatre and of course the annual pub crawl. In Bridgewater they had a couple of events including a great country music show. South west shrine club had Alphie Zappacosta (another fund raiser we are contemplating for 2015) and of course the Community parades. Now these are only the ones I know about and I’m sure many clubs had events that aren’t mentioned here. The solution, get the information to Sandy Buchan for the Shriners news and the Philae Shriners web site as well as to John Phillips for the new newsletter. Also check our web site and Facebook page for news on upcoming events. I believe this kind of stuff is critical to the survival of our fraternity and not much good if no one knows about it. Finally, I have set a tentative date for the Philae Shriners pub crawl of June 20th. Last year I had a conflict with the Grand Lodge of PEI which I have checked for this year. If you are aware of any conflicts please let me know before the date is final. That’s all for now, once again thank you for your support and Lady Kathy and I look forward to seeing you this year. mike@reflectionscabaret.com (902) 877 8001 Philae Shriners Official Call of the Potentate Lost in the Desert Addresses Unknown Listed below are the names and addresses of those Nobles “Lost in the Desert”, which is to say we do not have a current address. On one of the days were lucky enough to be able to visit the Temples of Philae Island. Philae Island is a rocky island in the middle of the River Nile, south of Aswan . The Ancient Egyptians built a beautiful and magnificent Temple on this island for the Goddess Isis, but the Temple became submerged after the first Aswan dam was built in 1906, and it was not until the seventies that many nations attempted to save the Temple. Many countries, together with UNESCO, selected a suitable location 300 meters downstream. The new island was called Egilica, and it was completely reshaped to imitate Philae Island as closely as possible. Firstly, a coffer dam was built around the Temple and the water was drained. Next, the Temple was dismantled and transferred, stone by stone, from the submerged Philae Island to the redesigned Egilica Island. Each and every stone (37,363 blocks) had to be numbered, and then replaced, in the same position, in the new location. It was a massive, and very complicated, project taking over 9 years to be accomplished. Philae, an elegant temple dedicated to the Goddess Isis was rescued from the rising waters of Lake Nasser. The temple is one of the Nubian monuments that comprise this UNESCO World Heritage Site and was a sacred island over 2,700 years ago. 6 Philae Shriners News Spring 2015 The Temple of Philae was reopened in 1980 !!!! Two stone lions of pink granite guard the entrance to the Temple of Isis, the main Temple occupying three quarters of Philae Island. They were formerly accompanied by two obelisks, which were removed. The Philae obelisk was one of two obelisks found at Philae in Upper Egypt in 1815 and soon afterwards acquired by William John Bankes who had it transported to his estate at Kingston Lacy in Dorset, England. The house now belongs to the National Trust and the obelisk can still be seen in the gardens. It was this Philae obelisk, now on an English country estate that was instrumental in deciphering the Rosetta Stone! In addition to the main Temple of Isis there are other monuments here, such as The Kiosk of Trajan, the Chapel of Osiris, The Temple of Horus, The Temple of Hathor, The Gateway of Tiberius, the Gateway of Diocletian, and the Temple of Augustus. The Temples of the island were neglected, and some of them even destroyed, after the persecution of the Christians by the Roman Emperors. During the reign of the Emperor Justinian (527-565 A.D), the main Temple was converted to a church. Today, the rescued Temple of Philae stands proud once more!!! Ill Sir Bert Thompson questioned the donations to the Childrens’ Travel Fund. He stated thathe felt they should be made known to the Nobility. Ill Sir Bill Scrymgeour questioned why the expected income from the Childrens’ Magic Show was considerably less than in 2014. Noble Doug Morton explained that in 2015 we would only be doing one show whereas in 2014 we did a spring and a fall show. Ill Sir Bill Scrymgeour stated that he was disappointed with the reduced donations from clubs and units. He stated that he felt it was incumbent on all Potentates, when visiting, to remind clubs how important it is to support their Temple through contributions to the General Fund. He stated that there needs to be more than $15,075.00 to operate the Temple. Ill Sir Phil Beeler questioned the reason for several line items covering insurance. The Recorder Noble David Fraser explained that the Temple carried five different insurance policies. (1) The Temple carries a PL&PD policy on the Jolly Trolley (2) The Temple carries a PL&PD policy on various trailers used by different units, as well as the Keystone Kops Paddy Wagon. This is actually a generic vehicle policy. (3) The Temple carries a directors liability policy as mandated by Tampa. (4) The Temple carries a comprehensive commercial policy covering the building, staff, parking lot, liability, etc. Again mandated by Imperial, and (5) a PL&PD on various small parade vehicles such a mini cars, mini bikes, etc. The Nobles operating these vehicles receive coverage by contributing (presently $35.00) and receive PL&PD coverage for the time they are actually operating these vehicles on parade. All policies were reviewed and put to tender by our Insurance advisor Noble Brian Churchill at the end of 2013. The question was again called and the motion to accept the budget as presented CARRIED 8.2 Noble Mike Schmid reported that a Tech Committee had been formed and was up and running. (continued on Page 10) Spring 2015 Philae Shriners News 9 Philae Shriners Stated Meeting and Ceremonial (continued from Page 9) 8.5 Noble Ken Conrod moved that Philae participate in the Grand Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star 2015 program booklet, with a one page advertisement, costing $100.00. Seconded by Ill Sir Shane Buchan. CARRIED 8.6 Noble Ken Conrod rose to question the practice of recognizing and recording the number of members attending stated meetings from each club. The Recorder responded that he had researched previous minutes of stated meetings back at least ten years and this had always been the practice. The Noble Recorder stated that as far as he could determine, this was done to recognize those who had travelled considerable distance to actively participate in the affairs of the Temple. As an aside to this topic, the Noble Recorder was informed after the meeting that this was indeed correct, and that the practice had been instituted by Ill Sir Norman Thompson in 1989, for the purpose of encouraging greater attendance at stated meetings. 8.7 Ill Sir Paul Frank rose to announce that he as Grand Master of The Grand Lodge of Nova Scotia had convened a meeting of members of several concordant and appendant Masonic bodies in an attempt to eliminate the practice of conflicting events occurring on the same weekends. He encouraged all to use the calendar on the Grand Lodge website to check for possible conflicts and to record their planned events. He stated that if everyone from both Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island would used this calendar than much of the existing conflicts could be prevented. Ill Sir Paul Frank announced that there will be a Nova Scotia Grand Lodge bar-b-que with entertainment to be held in Sarasota, Florida on March 31, 2015 for masons and friends of masons. This is being organized by Noble Mike Schmid and the cost will be $ 22.50 USD. Ill Sir Paul welcomed all snow birds and any other visitors to the area. 9. Ill Sir Doug thanked all for attending the Chief Rabban’s night. Ill Sir Doug thanked Ill Sirs John Cameron and Wendell Dawson for their help and guidance to him. Ill Sir Doug stated that he especially wanted to thank the Island Shrine Club for all they had done for him and for their support over the years. He reminded all that “Never does a man stand so tall as when he stoops to help a child”. The meeting was closed at 12:50 pm. The next stated meeting to be held at the Temple, 3530 Connolly Street, Halifax, NS on May 9, 2015 at 10:00 am Recorder Potentate Athena Temple Quarterly Update from Athena Temple Athena Temple does not have a lot to report for this quarter. We do not meet in December so have our ‘Christmas’ session in November and our February session was postponed due to icy conditions. One Supreme Appointee and eight Past Queens were present for our November session. Princess Recorder read correspondence from Shirley Smith, Canadian Trustee, reminding us of the Dedication Ceremony for the new hospital in Montreal and the Floor Naming Ceremony on August 19th. Not all Ladies of the Household will be able to attend but all are excited about this project. Spouses and friends join us for our social period following our session when we have our annual Chinese auction (penny auction) and refreshments where we share samples of our favourite Christmas goodies. Some go away arms laden with treasures they’ve won at the auction while others go away empty-handed but a good time is had by all. In January, February and March we hold our sessions in the afternoon preceded by a soup luncheon. Our January session had to be postponed because of a snowstorm . . . Sandy and Nelson Hurray have worked very hard in getting pop tabs to our temple from Prince Edward Island so the ladies of the household voted at the January session to give them a Stepping Stone to Happiness to show our appreciation. We were saddened by the loss of our Princess Pauline Veinotte and expressed our sympathy in the death of Princess Shirley Hatt’s husband, Lloyd. Zora Club continues to work hard in the interest of the temple and made a sizable donation to CRF which was matched by Athena Temple. We commend these ladies on all their hard work. On January 11th the Ladies of the Household were invited to a surprise tea in honour of Past Queen Joy Gerhardt’s 80th birthday hosted by the ladies auxiliary of her church. PQ Joy didn’t suspect a thing – she was just out for a Sunday drive. There was a wonderful turnout of family and friends which shows how much this special lady is loved. She continues to collect and redeem pop tabs Protect yourself and your family’s personal health and lifestyle information and Campbell’s soup labels in support of our temple. Princess Edith Conrod is recovering following knee replacement surgery and we are pleased to see Princess Marion Conrad out and about again following a session of the flu. We wish a speedy recovery to anyone else who has not been enjoying good health. Our February session was postponed because of icy conditions. It is easier to prevent a fall than it is to repair the damage after one happens and we want all the ladies of our household to be safe and well. Queen Sharon’s year is winding down and we will soon turn another page in the history of Athena Temple and welcome a new queen. In March we hold our election of officers and Installation is in April. We hope some of the Nobles and their ladies will be able to join us for this impressive ceremony. Thank you for publishing our current news notes. Congratulations to Kevin (Sweet P) for being awarded as Master Clown and Harold (Boss Hog) for earning the distinction of a Craftsman Clown. Graham (Beeper) and Nick (Happy) attended the Judges workshops and our lady clowns Lynn (Sparkle) and Bev (Giggles) had a great time. As always, Lady Marylyn was there to support the clowns and act as navigator for the trip to and from the Northeast Clown Institute in Plymouth Mass. The clown unit is open to any Shriner who would like to be a Clown. There are also a number of Ladies who are dressing as Clowns and participating in various activities. For your planning purposes and to mark it on your calendar, the next Clown Unit meeting will be held in Amherst 1000 18 Apr 15, hosted by the Amherst Shrine Club. The meeting will start at 1000 followed by lunch and then various workshops presented by our clowns who have recently returned from Clown School. Looking ahead a number of clowns will be attending the Klownfest in Bangor Maine 27 - 29 Mar 15. This an open invitation so if you are interest in clowning more information can be found at the following link. http://klownfest.com/ Again, I would encourage the Nobles and Ladies to consider joining and participating in the most fun unit in Philae Shriners. Further information can be found on the Clown Unit page at Philae Shriner website http://philaeshriners.com/clubs-units/units/temple-clown-unit/page under Philae Clowns. We in the Jolly Trolley Unit are looking forward to having the Trolley available in as many locations / parades as possible throughout the coming months. However, this will take the co-operation of every Noble within Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. To make the parade season successful, we are looking for Nobles to join the Jolly Trolley Unit and become licensed drivers. To do this will require an upgrade of your license to a Class 4 – but hold on, the Jolly Trolley Unit will assist Nobles wishing to upgrade their license. We will work with you in providing the Trolley to train with and financial assistance by covering the cost of the written test and road test. We hope to have the Jolly Trolley attend all “Potentate’s” Parades throughout Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island in 2015 and we want to work with the various Club’s if they have a parade / event that they would like the Trolley to attend. However, the Trolley’s attendance will depend on the availability of licensed drivers. If you have a parade or event that you would like the Trolley to attend, please contact the Jolly Trolley Unit President, Ken Conrod to discuss / arrange ph. 902462-3919 or 902-410-7090. To make the parade season success- ful, it will require financial assistance from everyone. With the cost of fuel, maintenance, inspections and insurance, to name a few, it is quite expensive to keep the Jolly Trolley Unit on the road. We hope that you, and the Clubs throughout Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, will assist with the running of the Trolley this year – donations are graciously accepted and cheques can be made out to the Jolly Trolley Unit and forwarded to the Recorders office. Look forward to seeing you on the Parade circuit. Ken Conrod President - Jolly Trolley Unit It Costs Nothing The Power of a Smile It cost nothing, but creates much. It enriches those who receive it, without impoverishing those who give it. It happens in a flash, and the memory of it sometimes lasts forever. No one is so rich that he can get along without it, and no one is so poor but that he is richer for its benefits. It creates happiness in the home, fosters goodwill in business, and is the countersign of friends. It is rest to the weary, daylight to the discouraged, sunshine to the sad, and nature’s best antidote for trouble. Yet it cannot be bought, begged, borrowed or stolen, for it is something that is of no earthly good to anyone unless it given away. Philae Executive Committee Spring 2015 Philae Shriners News 19 Our Philadelphia Hospital First to Perform Innovative Surgery Shriners Hospitals for Children Philadelphia have an extensive treatment program for scoliosis (curvature of the spine) that is designed to treat all forms of the condition, using every tool available. The newest treatment being offered for young children with schoiosis curves too large for bracing is the MAGEC (MAGnetic Expansion Control) Spiral Bracing and Distraction System. Typically, large and potentiallly life-threatening scoliosis curves are treated wtih traditional growing rods, which require a moderate surgical procedure for implantation, then a smaller procedure every six months to lengthen the spine. Although the lengthening procedures are relatively minor, they still involve general Philae Phunnies 20 anesthesia, anxiety and discomfort. The FAGEC rods are an alternative to the traditional growing rods, and eliminate the need for repeated lengthening surgeries. This results in significant safety, health, mental and phyical benefits for the child and their family. Patients will also be able to get beck to their activities of daily living sooner with this surgical option. The spine team members at the PhiladelphiaShriners Hospitals are known for being pioneers in the newest cuttingedge technology for spine care, and are proud to have completed the first surgery using the MACEG system in the United States since the FDA granted 5 10K clearances on February 27,2014. One day, while strolling down the boardwalk, John bumped into an old friend of his, Rob, from high school. “You look great John, how do you stay looking so young? Why you must be 60 already but you don’t look a day over 40!” Rob exclaimed. “I feel like I’m 40 too!” replied John. “That’s incredible” exclaimed Rob, “Does it run in the family? How old was your dad when he passed?” “Did I say he was dead?” asked John. “He’s 81 and is more active then ever. He just joined the neighborhood basketball team!” responded John. “Whoa! Well how old was your Grandfather when he died?” “Did I say he died” asked John. Rob was amazed. “He just had his 105th birthday and plays golf and goes swimming each day! He’s actually getting married this week!” “Getting married?!” Rob asked. If he’s 105, why on earth does he want to get married?! John looked at Rob and replied, “Did I say he wanted to?” Philae Shriners News Spring 2015 Spring 2015 Philae Shriners News 21 22 Philae Shriners News Spring 2015 Masons and the Old West @ http://playervimeo.com/video/43013696 Western Valley Red Oak Shriners Make Presentation Left to Right: Noble Dalton Lease, Noble Rollie Zwicker, Mr. Paul Easson, Noble President George Thomson, and Noble Cliff Oickle Recently the Western Valley Shrine Club, presented to Mr. Paul R.
