We ask our residents to be aware of the rise of these gas pump skimmers. We recommend that all citizens: - Pay with Cash - Drop off your credit card with the clerk, and pay after you’re done pumping if no cash is available - Keep an eye on your bank statements, report any suspicious activities - Examine gas pump, make sure cabinet is closed before you pump - Use pumps closer to the store, thieves tend to use the skimmers closer back to not be detected quicker - Call in any suspicious activity near a pump On Friday, May 15, 2015, Stuart Police participated in the Law Enforcement Officer Memorial Ceremony held at Jupiter Island Public Safety Complex. Agencies throughout the Treasure Coast came together today to honor those who have lost their lives in the line of duty. We have received several calls from residents reporting attempted scams from telephone callers. These calls have also been reported to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office. Scammers have been calling residents identifying themselves as a ranking member of the Martin County Sheriff’s Office. The caller informs the resident that they have an active warrant for failure to report for jury duty. The scammers says that he will void the warrant if the resident pays a fee from a prepaid money card. The Martin County Sheriff’s Officer will NEVER call and demand money to void an arrest warrant. If you receive a similar call, hang up immediately and call police. We also continue to receive reports of residents being called from the IRS demanding payment for back taxes owed. The caller advises that the citizen must pay their outstanding tax debt immediately with a prepaid gift card to avoid arrest. The IRS will NOT call and demand immediate payment to avoid arrest. If you receive a call from the IRS demanding money, HANG UP and call police. If you have any questions regarding your tax status, call the IRS directly.
