Well summer is here and the snowbirds are gone however the lodge seems to be crowded on the weekends. I
have noticed a lot of members returning to the lodge. Remember this is your lodge and we need your support.
I would like to quell some rumors that I have heard around the lodge. Yes, it is true that we have a special
representative team that has been assigned to our lodge. No, they are not here to close our lodge. If you remember last year we talked about our lodge being in trouble financially. Since that time numerous changes
have been instituted that have helped us pull out of the downward spiral that we were in. The mortgage issue
alone saved the lodge over $400.00 a month and the janitorial service another $800.00 a month. Saturday night
music saved another $600.00 a month. Numerous other cost saving measures were also put into place over the
past year. This team has been assigned to make sure that our lodge is going in the right direction. We will
prove to them that we are going in the right direction. I have directed all lodge personnel to cooperate with
this team in their mission.
I would like to congratulate our Elk of the month Tom Coleman. Many of you might not know, but Tom
volunteers in the kitchen on Friday nights. His specialty is fried fish and he does an excellent job. Thanks
Tom for all that you do for our lodge.
Speaking of volunteers we are looking for members to help in the kitchen. Jerry Peterson has been cooking
on Wednesday nights and Lynn and I have been doing Thursday nights. Ray Warren, Kay Pankevich, Marion
Bousquet and Connie St. Denny also volunteer in the kitchen. We are looking for more people to help out.
Having volunteers will reduce our costs. Please contact us if you can help. It is all about having a good time.
If everyone helps we do not have to depend on a certain few.
Our House committee has been chosen and their names will be appearing in this issue. Mary Garvey is the
house chairperson. Please contact them if you have any fresh ideas for them to consider.
Dan Theodore has acquired several contracts for rental of the hall for special occasions. Thanks for all
your hard work Dan.
Please keep an eye out for special events that will be coming up this month. We will have a flag day ceremony in June 14th.
Thanks to Elaine Kuczkowski for setting up the entertainment for the lodge.
I want to thank Mr. Len Blanton President of L&S Enterprises Port Orange Florida, for bringing his bucket
truck to the lodge and replacing the rope on our flag pole for us at no charge.
The Lodge held a charity event on May 16th for a Donna Rudy of Port Orange who needs testing for a lung
transplant. I am very grateful to all of the volunteers who helped with this event. I am also very proud to
announce that our lodge raised $2500.00 for this great cause.
Hope everyone is having a great Summer!
Fraternally Yours

grandchildren who are entering their senior year of high school this fall about applying for this scholarship.
Emergency Educational Grants to children of deceased or totally disabled Elks members, which helps with the cost of
college education. Starting with the 2015-16 year, there are a few important updates to the Emergency Educational
Grant application, which became available May 1, 2015. Both new and renewal applications will be due October 31,
2015. New this year, applicants will submit their applications directly to the Elks National Foundation Scholarship
Office in Chicago. Upon receipt of the application, the Chicago office will contact the sponsoring Elks Lodge to verify
parent membership and death/disability information. After review of the application, the Scholarship office will notify
the applicant and the sponsoring Lodge of the award amount via email and letter. For complete details about the
Emergency Educational Grants, please visit www.elks.org/ENF/scholars/eefgrants.cfm.

Americanism Contest Winner
Sean Snodgrass, an eighth grade student at Creekside
Middle School, with his father, Paul Snodgrass of Port
Orange, Florida, Carvell Lloyd and Belle Altice. Sean
placed third in Division 2, 7th & 8th grade in the Florida
State Americanism Essay Contest: “What Does The
Pledge of Allegiance Mean to Me?”
The recognition breakfast and award presentation was
held at the Port Orange Lodge on Sunday, May 17,
2015. Sean read his essay and was then presented a
$500 check from Exalted Ruler Larry Lewis.
The Pledge of Allegiance
By: Sean Snodgrass
When you say the Pledge of Allegiance you aren’t just saying a few words with your hand over your heart.
You are pledging to be an American. You are pledging to be honest and respectful to your fellow Americans.
You are showing pride and loyalty to your country.
To me, the words,” I pledge allegiance to the flag,” means that you’re not just pledging to the flag but that
you are promising to be a good American. When you put your hand over your heart it shows that you care for
and love your country and will do anything in your power to protect it. When I put my hand on my heart and I
say those words, it feels as if I’m not a single person, but as if I’m a part of something big. I feel like I’m one
of many people who will do anything and everything for this amazing country.
One of my favorite words in the pledge is indivisible. When I speak that word it makes me feel strong. Our
country is indivisible because it cannot be divided. We are a strong country, who has fought everything from
terrorists to ourselves at one point, but we cannot truly ever be divided. America is like a big family. Yeah, we
may fight over the TV, but we will always love each other in the end.

Congratulations to Tom Coleman for being chosen as Elk of the Month. Many of you might
not know, but Tom volunteers in the kitchen on Friday nights. His specialty is fried fish and

Last month, we did not have a photo of Robert (Bob) Luathain.
He had been in the hospital. So again to Bob, congratulations for being
