Pre-AP English 9 Summer Reading Assignment
2015-2016
We know exactly what you are thinking right now: “We haven’t even finished eighth grade yet, and Mrs.
Cottrill and Ms. Kenney are already expecting us to do work for next year!?” You’re absolutely right!
To show that you are ready for the rigorous study required in Pre-AP English 9, we are expecting you to
read and write over the summer. Your assignment is to read a novel from the following list by the
time you return to school in the fall AND complete a set of Reader-Response journals for your
chosen book. This assignment is important because it shows your teachers that you are ready to think
deeply about literature and to write about your personal reactions to novels. Reading this novel over
the summer will lead to your first grade in Pre-AP English 9 and in high school.
Here are some TIPS for completing this assignment:
1. It is not a requirement for you to purchase your own copy of the novel, but we would highly
suggest it. You can also borrow most of these books from the public library or purchase
electronic copies (Kindle, iBooks. etc.) of these novels.
2. Do NOT wait until August 30th to start reading the book!
3. Take notes as you read. This helps you be a more active reader. We will also work on this
skill throughout the year.
 Read the assigned essay, “How to Mark a Book,” for the reasons why your teachers
have you mark your books as well as some methods for taking notes.
 It is recommended that you highlight important passages and make notes in the
margins, OR you are welcome to use post-it notes, notecards, or good old fashioned
paper and pencil. Some tablets, e-readers, and iPads allow you to highlight and make
notes electronically.

The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon
Dandelion Wine by Ray Bradbury
The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini
The Hound of the Baskervilles by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (a Sherlock Holmes novel)
Emma by Jane Austen
An Important Note for Parents: The Kite Runner and The Curious Incident of a Dog in Night-time are
considered modern classics that appear on many college prep reading lists, but they do contain mature
themes. We feel that the literary merit of these works outweighs any potentially objectionable content
like rape (The Kite Runner) or strong language (Curious Incident); however, if you are concerned, please
have your child select a different title from the list provided.
