PRESS RELEASE: Contact: Kit Eakle, 510-‐237-‐5551; 415-‐419-‐7090 Email: kit@musickit.com — more info: prjazz.org Point Richmond JAZZ— in support of The Renaissance of the Jazz Violin Mads Tolling Trio presents "Mads Men," Instrumental hits from movies and TV-series of the Mad Men Era
When: Friday, November 25, 7:30 to 10 pm Where: 201 Martina St. Richmond, 94801 Point Richmond Jazz presented Mads Tolling in concert for its 2nd concert in 2013. Mr. Tolling was then relatively unknown. In the past 2 years Mads Tolling has taken the Bay Area by storm. He has performed at the most prestigious jazz concert halls, Yoshi’s and SF Jazz, and has written a jazz violin concerto which he premiered with The Oakland East Bay Symphony at the Paramount Theater. Now recognized as one of the finest young violinists in the world, Tolling will return to Point Richmond’s First United Methodist Church at 201 Martina St. on Friday, May 29, at 7:30. Tolling will present his new project “Mads Men” with jazz covers of 60’s TV and Movie themes in the final concert of Point Richmond Jazz’s 2015-‐6 season. But Tolling, a native of Denmark, is also a protégé of one of the most important Swing Jazz musicians of the 20th Century — Svend Asmussen. Asmussen, the “Swingin’ Dane,” is the last of the great Swing artists alive today. He is celebrating his 100th birthday within the year, and Tolling promises to pay tribute to his famous mentor. Tolling, who has lived in the East Bay for a number of years, came here when he joined the seminal string jazz group, The Turtle Island String Quartet, with whom he garnered 2 Grammy Awards. Tolling’s work is evidence of the Point Richmond Jazz’ premise: The HOTTEST THING in jazz these days is the advent of the JAZZ VIOLIN! Around the world, across America, and especially here in the San Francisco Bay area, amazingly skilled violinists are showing that the violin brings a unique and freshly influential voice to Jazz. Point Richmond has been showcasing this trend for 2 years now. The Point Richmond series will continue in September with an all new 2015-‐2016 season!
