The 10th Annual Pioneer Valley Jewish Film Festival April 12-26, 2015
Welcome to the 10th Annual
Pioneer Valley Jewish Film Festival.
For 10 years, the festival has
presented award-winning, Jewishthemed films from around the world,
plus a broad range of programming and
special events. What an honor it is to
be a part of the festival’s journey.
Our continued collaboration
with educational institutions, cultural
organizations and local businesses enables
the film festival to offer a multifaceted
exploration of Jewish culture, secular
and religious life, history and politics.
The PVJFF is a shared effort among
volunteers and professional staff from
organizations across the Pioneer Valley.
I want to thank all of our sponsors,
donors, volunteers and professionals
that make our festival so special.
This year, our line-up includes 20
fantastic films, conversations with four
filmmakers, two anniversary receptions
and a special teen philanthropy event. As
always, we continue to bring a meaningful,
fun and thought-provoking festival to
our community — a place to gather and
celebrate Jewish culture and connections.
As we mark this milestone anniversary,
I want to take the time to appreciate our
community screening partners for their
ongoing support. Most especially, I want
to acknowledge you, our audience, for
such loyal support over the last 10 years.
Thank you and see you at the movies!

The kidnapping and torture of a young French-Moroccan Jew, and the harrowing
ordeal of his family, are given a searing dramatization in this white-knuckle thriller. Abducted
in 2006 on the outskirts of Paris by a multiracial gang, Ilan Halimi was held for ransom
under ghastly conditions for more than three weeks on the theory that since he was
Jewish, he must be rich. Faithfully reenacting events from the view of various characters,
the story tracks the massive but futile investigation doomed by near-misses and a failure
to recognize the case as a hate crime. Meantime, a parallel drama unfolds as powerless
loved ones have no choice but to put their trust in the hands of authorities, even as they
are tormented by invective-laced phone calls from the captors. 24 Days raises troubling
questions about the state of anti-Semitism and race relations in contemporary France.

Poor Herzl (Itzik Cohen) is a big fish out of water. A 340-pound chef living with his
mother, he’s been gamely diving into a sea of perpetual diet groups and fitness regimes,
and belly flopping. He’s fired from a restaurant salad bar because of his “unpresentable”
image; then his rigid weight-loss class dumps him because he keeps gaining pounds instead
of shedding them. The relentless pursuit of slim is frustrating for him and for his three
seriously overweight buddies in the working-class town of Ramle, Israel. But all that starts
to change when Herzl discovers the one place where fat guys can be rock stars: the world
of sumo wrestling. In this endearing and poignant comedy, co-directors Sharon Maymon
and Erez Tadmor find both wit and soul in their four big guys’ efforts to master an ancient
sport and accept themselves for the (large) people they are. With echoes of The Full Monty
in both its blue-collar setting and its themes, A Matter of Size follows its own tender and
funny (and Jewish) path from body shame to body celebration, and from loneliness to love.
A snack reception will precede the screening.

Beneath the Helmet
Beneath the Helmet: From High School to the Home Front is a coming of age story
that highlights five young Israeli high school graduates, who are drafted into the army to
defend their country. At the age of 18 – away from their houses, family and friends – these
young individuals undergo a demanding journey, revealing the core of who they are and who
they want to be. From the creators of the PBS-featured documentary Israel Inside: How a
Small Nation Makes a Big Difference, this film illustrates how a group of young men and
women are protecting not only their homes, but also the shared values of peace, equality,
opportunity, democracy, religious tolerance and women’s rights. The lessons they learn
along the way are lessons that can be adapted, understood and appreciated by everyone.
In an effort to confront her family’s dark past, a punk-chick from California traces
her father’s roots back to pre-war Berlin. Her journey takes her to Houston, Paris,
Berlin, Prague and Theresientadt. During this voyage she discovers not only how she
and her entire family were affected by Hitler’s Final Solution, but also that her family
is larger than anyone imagined. She is finally able to leave a tribute to her family on
the streets of Berlin and watch while her father is welcomed back to the city by the
Mayor of Berlin. Told through the eyes of a second-generation Holocaust survivor, this
amazing true account of one family in the big shadow of one of history’s most harrowing
times, reveals the emotional impact that is handed down through generations.

Israel’s official entry for Best Foreign Language Film Oscar and winner of six
Israeli Ofir Awards, Bethlehem is an intricate, tick-tock cliffhanger centered on the
tragic relationship between an Israeli intelligence officer and his Palestinian informant.
Shadi Mar’i gives an award-winning performance as Sanfur, a hot-headed Palestinian
teenager who feels overshadowed by older brother Ibrahim (Hisham Suleiman), a
militant local hero wanted for orchestrating suicide bombings in Israel. Conflicted
and vulnerable, young Sanfur is exploited by Israel’s Shin Bet security service and
fatherly intel agent Razi (Tsahi Halevy) who establishes a fragile bond with him. As an
Israeli plot to assassinate Ibrahim heats up, and conflict erupts among Palestinian
factions, loyalties are tested and pressure mounts, leading to a gut-wrenching climax.
Shuttling back and forth between conflicting points of view, the film is a raw portrayal
of characters torn apart by competing loyalties and impossible moral dilemmas, giving
an unparalleled glimpse into the dark and fascinating world of human intelligence.

When a group of best friends in Tel Aviv gather to watch UniverSong, they are
less than impressed by the official Israeli entry. Believing that they can do better, they
spontaneously create and record their own song on a mobile phone. Little do they know
their performance is seen by the UniverSong judges, and soon they are reluctantly
thrown into the spotlight as Israel’s next official entry. After initial reservations about
their newfound celebrity status, the friends decide to go for it and find themselves
on a flamboyant journey toward international stardom. From acclaimed Israeli writer/
director Eytan Fox comes this extravagant and unashamedly entertaining Eurovision
parody, featuring a feel-good soundtrack provided by Babydaddy from the Scissor
Sisters. With bright styling, irresistibly catchy tunes and a gloriously uplifting storyline,
this laugh-out-loud comedy is a refreshing ode to music, friendship and romance.

Eichmann’s Fate
Eichmann’s Fate (Eichmanns Ende) is based on the true story of Lothar Hermann,
a concentration camp survivor living in 1950s Argentina who accidentally discovers
a trail leading to the notorious Nazi Adolf Eichmann by way of Hermann’s daughter’s
romantic relationship with a young man. Hermann notifies Fritz Bauer, the state
public prosecutor in Frankfurt, who in turn contacts Mossad, Israel’s secret service
agency. A carefully choreographed plot by intelligence agents leads to the spectacular
capture of Hitler’s right-hand man in 1960. Award-winning director Richmond Ley
crafted this docu-drama using historical footage and interviews conducted with
Eichmann in Argentina by a former Dutch member of the SS, Willem Sassen.

Gloomy Sunday was an audience favorite in the early days of the Pioneer Valley Jewish
Film Festival, so it is only fitting to repeat its showing during our 10th anniversary year!
A hit song during the 1930s, “Gloomy Sunday” was notorious for allegedly driving
people to suicide. Now it is the inspiration for this marvelous feature film – a love story
with a twist. The film flashes back from the 1990s to the early 1930s in Budapest,
where three people are caught in a love triangle. Lászlò, a successful Jewish restaurant
owner, loves his gorgeous assistant, Ilona. She loves him and the young piantist András,
who composes “Gloomy Sunday” for her. Their situation becomes increasingly perilous
when a German restaurant patron returns to Budapest as a member of the SS. The
German actor Joachim Król stands out as Lászlò; Erika Marozsán shines as Ilona.

Mica is a classic young teen. Enthusiastic. Idealistic. Dreaming baseball. At 13,
he is studying for his Bar Mitzvah, the Jewish coming-of-age rite. An earnest kid, he
takes to heart his Rabbi’s requirement to help “heal the world.” Imagining himself a
savior of sorts, he launches a grand plan to send baseballs to Cuba, a country with
a mysterious pull. He knows only that Cubans are poor and love baseball – and that
Cuba saved his grandpa’s life. On a hunch, his award-winning filmmaker parents pick
up their camera. They know the U.S. embargo with Cuba – and the complications of
growing up – will throw their son a curveball. Part travelogue and part coming-of-age
story, Havana Curveball is a marvelously crafted tale that provides insights into the
bizarre state of relations between the U.S. and Cuba as well as the idealism of youth.

Daring to ask questions about her true identity, around which her parents had
kept a careful silence through her entire childhood, filmmaker Lacey Schwartz gently
but firmly pulls back the curtain on matters of race and family secrets in her deeply
personal and fascinating documentary. Growing up unselfconsciously Jewish and
Caucasian in the leafy, largely white town of Woodstock, NY, Lacey and her extended
family explained away her tawny complexion by pointing to a picture of her father’s
swarthy Sicilian Jewish grandfather. But her parents’ fraying marriage and her own nagging
doubts compelled Schwartz to begin tugging at the threads of her identity. Little White
Lie raises questions for us all: What factors—race, religion, family, upbringing—make
us who we are? And what happens when we are forced to redefine ourselves?

My Italian Secret: The Forgotten Heroes reveals a clandestine Italian resistance
movement that helped save much of the country’s Jewish population during the
Shoah. An estimated 80 percent of Italy’s Jews survived WWII thanks to Italian citizens
who risked their own lives to defy the Nazis. Among the figures spotlighted is Tour de
France cycling champion Gino Bartali. Hiding a family of Jews in his own home, Bartali
also smuggled fake identify documents in the frame of his bicycle for monasteries
and convents that were sheltering Jewish exiles. Isabella Rossellini narrates this
valuable addition to the ever-growing canon of largely unknown Holocaust stories.

A superlative saga of courage and compassion, Run Boy Run tells the extraordinary
true story of a Polish boy who seeks the kindness of others in his solitary struggle to
outlast the Nazi occupation and keep alive his Jewish faith. Escaping the Warsaw
ghetto at the behest of his father, nine-year old Srulik (movingly portrayed by twin child
actors Andrzej and Kamil Tkacz) flees to the woods. There, he learns to hide from SS
patrols and scour for food, until loneliness and the harsh onset of winter drive him back
to civilization. Taken in by a kindhearted farmer’s wife (Elisabeth Duda), he is given
shelter and a new identity. Passing himself off as Jurek, a Christian war orphan, the
intrepid boy traverses the countryside from village to village, working as a farmhand
under an ever-present threat of persecution. Some will help him survive and others
will betray him. Just when it seems his childhood memories and identity could be
lost forever, Jurek’s harrowing journey culminates in a powerhouse conclusion and
postscript. Based on the bestselling Holocaust novel by Israeli author Uri Orlev.

Idiosyncratic and dripping with black humor, Self Made tells the story of two women
– one Israeli, the other Palestinian – who are trapped within their respective worlds. After
a mix-up at a checkpoint, they find themselves living the life of the other on the opposite
side of the border. Michal is a renowned Jerusalem artist. One morning, her bed breaks,
she falls off and consequently loses her memory. She orders a new bed and discovers
that a screw is missing. She complains to the furniture factory, leading to the dismissal of
Nadine, a young Palestinian woman, who works packing screws in plastic bags. This event
is a point of no return for both women until their fates cross again at a border checkpoint.
A soldier’s mistake sends Michal to Nadine’s refugee camp and Nadine to Michal’s home
in Jerusalem. The swap leads them to discover their hidden desires, inaccessible in their
previous lives. Nominated for the Critics Week Grand Prize at the Cannes Film Festival.

In the late 1980s, on the brink of the collapse of the Soviet Union, tens of
thousands of Soviet Jews were finally allowed to leave the USSR. What these people
did not expect was that their final destination, America, no longer welcomed them with
open arms. Unlike their “refusenik” predecessors, those coming to the U.S. were now
burdened with having to prove “reasonable fear of persecution,” a concept simply not
understood by those born into maltreatment. Because of this, thousands had their
applications for refugee status denied, leaving them in Italy – stateless. This documentary
captures that unique slice of history from the point of view of the émigrés as well as
expert accounts of the situation from influential Jewish leaders including David Harris
of the AJC, Mark Handelman of NYANA and Mark Hetfield of HIAS, among others.

Before World War II, Poland’s 3.5 million Jews made the country the epicenter
of the Jewish world. Today, less than 20,000 Jews live there. Due to the Holocaust and
ensuing Soviet era, Poland’s remaining Jews hid their identity from their children. With
the fall of Communism in 1989, a young generation of Jews began learning their longburied ancestry. The Return focuses on four women in their 20s who face the unique
challenge of trying to create an identity in a vacuum, with little knowledge of their
heritage. This documentary depicts their valiant efforts at creating a new, authentic Jewish
community in a country still regarded in the United States as the “Jewish graveyard.”

One night at a bar, an old friend tells director Ari Folman about a recurring
nightmare in which he is chased by 26 vicious dogs. Every night, the same number of
beasts. The two men conclude that there’s a connection to their Israeli Army mission in
the first Lebanon War of the early 1980s. Ari is surprised that he can’t remember a thing
anymore about that period of his life. Intrigued by this riddle, Ari decides to meet and
interview old friends and comrades around the world. He needs to discover the truth
about that time and about himself. As Ari delves deeper and deeper into the mystery,
his memory begins to creep up in surreal images. With a mix of animation and real

order to find a way towards the truth. Waltz with Bashir premiered at the 2008 Cannes

Why are there so many Jewish comedians? When Comedy Went to School answers
this question with an entertaining portrait of this country’s greatest generation of
comics – the generation that includes the likes of Jerry Lewis, Sid Caesar, Jackie Mason,
Mort Sahl and Jerry Stiller, all of whom make appearances in the film, telling jokes and
telling their stories. The answer is also found in upstate New York’s Catskill Mountains,
aka the Borscht Belt, where Jewish immigrants transformed lush farmland into the 20th
century’s largest resort complex. Those Catskill hotels and bungalow colonies provided
the setting for a remarkable group of young Jewish-American comedians to hone their
craft and become worldwide legends. It was truly When Comedy Went to School.

Winning the top prize at the 2014 Tribeca Film Festival, first-time director Talya
Lavie steps into the spotlight with a zany, dark comedic portrait of everyday life for a unit
of young, female Israeli soldiers. The human resources office at a remote desert base
serves as the setting for this cast of characters who bide their time pushing paper and
playing computer games, counting down the minutes until they can return to civilian life.
Amidst their boredom and clashing personalities, issues of commitment – to friendship,
love, and country – are handled with humor and sharp-edged wit. Their biggest battles
are against their commanders or the guys who treat them badly. The only guns they
fire are staple guns—at each other in a hilarious, knock-down, drag-out fight.

Support the PVJFF
BETHLEHEM, 2013
With a 10-year track record of excellence and widespread support, the Pioneer
Valley Jewish Film Festival attracts a following from both the Jewish and non-Jewish
community. For two weeks each year, we bring the best of Jewish cinema (typically 20
films that screen in more than 10 different venues) to the Valley. Many films that are
screened at the PVFF would not find distribution elsewhere in the region.
The Pioneer Valley Jewish Film Festival (PVJFF) owes its success and longevity to
the generous contributions of our loyal donors, sponsors and collaborative partners. And
over the past two years, we are especially grateful to those who have donated to ensure
the festival’s smooth transition to the JCC. Ticket sales cover only 10% of the cost of the
festival, making sponsorship and other donations vital. Your support ensures that the
PVJFF will thrive in the years to come.
We invite you to partner with the Pioneer Valley Jewish Film Festival and help us
grow! Your tax-deductible contribution will help us sustain a world-class film festival
that celebrates Jewish heritage, engages diverse audiences and builds bridges to
