For others, it put a shiny new façade on long term problems. Assemblyman Jeffrion Aubry (DCorona), State Sen. Jose Peralta (DEast Elmhurst) and a representative for Councilwoman Julissa Ferreras (D-East Elmhurst) joined LeFrak Organization principal Jamie LeFrak in opening the courtyard April 8, marking a milestone in a multi-million dollar renovation project in progress throughout the complex. Alongside the new West Courtyard, LeFrak City is in the process of receiving new elevators, mail and laundry rooms, apartment renovations, and will ultimately see outdoor landscaping and a swimming pool among a slew of other upgrades, according to LeFrak. The new courtyard project – photo by jackie strawbridge state sen. Businesses Say ‘No’ Main Street Bus-Only Lanes By daniel Offner Staff Writer Business owners in the Queensboro Hill community have started a petition against a proposed bus-only lane on Main Street between Jamaica and Flushing. The lanes are part of the MTA and Department of Transportation’s plans for Select Bus Service along the Q44 bus route from Jamaica through Flushing and across the Whitestone Bridge to the Bronx. Don Capalbi, president of the Queensboro Hill-Flushing Neighborhood Association, said that while he is in favor of enhancing bus service in the area, he does not want the DOT or MTA to take away parking from businesses. “It’s not a big [business] district,” Capalbi said, “but, it’s just as important to us as Bell Boulevard is in Bayside.” Of the two potential options presented by the MTA and DOT, both would impact parking along the retail hub. The petition states, “the merchant district on Main Street, between Booth Memorial Avenue and the Long Island Expressway, serves as a hub of its Queensboro Hill residential community. Elimination of already-scarce parking would destroy the currently vibrant neighborhood commercial hub, severely diminishing the quality of life of all who have chosen to reside in its proximity.” As of press time, approximately 35 businesses in the Queensboro Hill community have signed the petition opposing a bus-only lane on Main Street – a critical component of Bus Rapid Transit, according to the Riders Alliance, a membership-based organization of mass transit advocates. “Ultimately, it’s what makes [Select Bus Service] work,” Jessica Nizar, a senior organizer with the Riders Alliance, said. “We don’t want a halfassed version.” She explained that while the project would still include features like a digital countdown clock, off-board ticketing and more spacious buses, it would not meet its objective: to improve travel time by 10 percent or more taking the bus between Jamaica and Flushing without the lanes. Members of the business community feel removing already limited parking would produce more harm than good. “Elimination of Main Street parking would exacerbate already substantial traffic congestion as drivers seek alternate parking,” the petition reads. Still in the preliminary stages, local business-owners are hoping the DOT and MTA will take their concern into consideration before presenting more detailed plans for SBS service on Main Street. Both the MTA and DOT plan to meet with members of Community Board 8 this spring to review any potential changes to the proposed SBS route. Both Aubry and Peralta repeatedly referred to the renovations as a “new beginning” for LeFrak. “Over 50 years ago, Samuel LeFrak had a vision, and his vision was to create a destination – a place where people could call home,” Peralta said. “The LeFrak Organization have stepped up to the plate to really meet up to what Samuel LeFrak’s vision was, and this is a new day, this is a new era.” “LeFrak has gone through some recent tragedies,” he added, alluding to the shooting murder of a pregnant resident last Thanksgiving and a cooking fire that killed three on New Year’s. “But today is a day of celebration.” Some residents, however, had trouble appreciating the project over what they called persistent issues within LeFrak City. Jim Galloway, coordinator for the LeFrak City Tenants’ League, and resident Jorge Rodriguez together cited poor heat and hot water, plumbing problems, security problems and slow response time from management to complaints. Senior citizens in particular are “placed on the back burner” in terms of getting problems fixed, Galloway argued. He went on to call conditions at the apartments – which rent at around $1,500/month for a one-bedroom, per the LeFrak City website – “deplorable.” When asked about these specific claims, LeFrak refuted them, and said in particular that management received no heat complaints over the winter. “Residents are really happy,” he said. LeFrak City management could not confirm the lack of complaints. In a conversation this week with the Queens Tribune, Peralta noted that his office has received calls from LeFrak residents who have been unsuccessful in getting heat issues and other apartment problems addressed. However, he added, “when we call LeFrak, they fix them immediately.” Regarding security, LeFrak noted that upgrades have already begun. He said that around 600 of a planned 1000 cameras have been installed, and pointed to one of the new key fobs that have been installed on LeFrak City doors, among several other measures. “There’s a limit to how fast one could go, but we’ve got quite a lot of that out of the way,” LeFrak added. Glancing at the new basketball courts after the ribbon cutting, where a group of kids had already started a game, Rodriguez remarked, “this is beautiful. I don’t mind paying for all of this.” “But give me services,” he continued. “The apartments are falling apart.” Reach Jackie Strawbridge at (718) 357-7400, Ext. 128, jstrawbridge@ queenstribune.com or @JNStrawbridge. Four Found Dead In Home By dOmenick rafter Editor in Chief Four elderly people were found dead last Friday in a Floral Park home, apparently killed by what officials said was accidental carbon monoxide poisoning. Police were called to the home at 260-08 86 Ave., just a few blocks from the Nassau County border, at around 3:15 p.m. last Friday after the son of Jerry and Marie Hugel, the elderly couple who lived in the home, called 911. According to police, NYPD Sgt. Robert Hugel had come to check on his parents after receiving no response from them, and upon arriving, found them unconscious and their Buick running in a closed garage. Responding officers found four people unconscious in home; Mr. and Mrs. Hugel, who were 83 and 80-yearsold respectively, their tenant, Gloria Greco, 70, and a friend, Walter Von Thadden, 76, of Whitestone who happened to be in the home at the time. EMS responded to the location and declared all four victims dead at the scene. The victims had no signs of trauma. Police believe carbon monoxide emitted from the running car in the garage may be to blame for their death. According to published reports, Jerry Hugel was found inside the car, while his wife was in a kitchen nearby. Von Thadden was found in the living room in the first floor and Greco was found at the top of the stairs on the second floor. FDNY officials say there were no carbon monoxide detectors in the home. Page 4 Tribune April 16-22, 2015 • www.queenstribune.com Jack Friedman, “Mr. Queens,” Laid To Rest By Luis Gronda Staff Writer On somber Sunday afternoon – what would have been his 56th birthday - many who knew and loved Queens Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Jack Friedman gathered to remember his life and contributions to the Borough that he loved. It was standing room only at Parkside Chapel in Rego Park for Friedman’s funeral service. The longtime civic leader and businessman died last Thursday. Family members and close friends fondly remembered Friedman, not only for what he did for Queens, but the type of father and husband that he was. His son, Daniel, was first among the family to eulogize his father, saying he was “more than average” and he lived his life, even when he was affected by illnesses that ultimately took his life. “The things that he overcame medically, one of them would have been enough to debilitate someone for the rest of their lives, but after the heart attack, the bypass and dialysis, he was always positive,” Daniel said. “[He] went to the Mets games opening day, went to the Knicks games when he could, watched Notre Dame when he could.” Cara, Friedman’s daughter, said he was more than just a father to her, and she looked up to him as a life influence. “He was a mentor, a career counselor, a secret-keeper, he knows a lot of things about a lot of you,” Cara said, which produced laughs from those in attendance. “But most importantly, he was my best friend so today is a hard day for all of us.” His wife, Lorie, said the service should be considered more of a celebration of Jack’s life. She said that he was planning on being back at work this past Tuesday and attending Mets’ opening day on Monday. “He’s watching us with a big smile today because he always hoped his work made a difference and he wore the title of ‘Mr. Queens’ proudly,” she said. “With all the tributes and the articles and on social media, Danny and Cara can see that their dad was one of the good guys and he did make a difference.” Lorie added that his family meant everything to him, including taking trips to Florida to see his mother and taking care of his children. “Jack was my best friend for almost 40 years, and I will always love him,” she said. Among those in attendance at the service were Queens Borough President Melinda Katz, Public Advocate Photo by Luis Gronda Assemblyman Michael Simanowitz and Borough President Melinda Katz join other dignitaries at Freidman’s funeral Sunday. Letitia James, State Sens. Toby Stavisky and Leroy Comrie and Council Members Mark Weprin, Karen Koslowitz, I. Daneek Miller and Julissa Ferreras. Several elected officials sent out statements expressing their condolences to the Friedman family. “Jack Friedman was a beloved staple of the Queens business and civic community,” Katz said. “Jack was fiercely committed to making Queens a key center of economic opportunity and prosperity. Jack’s deep love for Queens guided his leadership and activism throughout the community for years, and he was well-respected for it.” Weprin first tweeted about Fried- man’s death last Thursday. “Devastated [to] say that my dear friend Jack Friedman Exec Dir of @ QueensChamber has passed away. My prayers to his family and many friends,” he said. Friedman was the executive director of the Queens Chamber of Commerce since 2007 and was also a member of Community Board 13. The plan includes a slew of adjustments to current zoning regulations that the agency believes would together encourage affordable and senior housing and create more attractive buildings. A major aspect of the plan calls for modernizing zoning laws that were established in 1987. Broadly, the DCP believes regulations in certain districts create tight, ugly buildings, which the agency would address by increasing height maximums five to 15 feet and removing penalties for buildings that are set back from street level, among a number of other changes that Chairman Carl Weisbrod called “very, very modest” at an April 6 media roundtable. The plan also has a component to address the City’s growing senior population: the DCP proposes relaxing density restrictions on senior housing and eliminating certain special permits for nursing home development. The parking reduction involves the removal of off-street parking for af- fordable housing in a “transit zone” – areas in mostly western and southern Queens that are accessible by public transportation. According to the DCP, most low income homes either do not have cars or cannot afford the offstreet parking lots provided by their buildings, making those lots a burden on developers. The agency believes eliminating parking requirements would encourage the development of affordable housing. Community Board leaders, however, were skeptical of these assertions. “Once again it’s Manhattan-centric,” CB 5 chair Vinny Arcuri said. In Ridgewood, which falls in the transit zone and which Arcuri’s board covers, “you can’t fit another car on the street on alternate side [street sweeping] days,” he continued. “They’re double and triple parked. So if you reduce the requirements for off-street parking, where are they going?” CB 10 chair Betty Braton noted that her district, which also lies in the transit zone, is heavily populated by drivers despite being served by public transportation. Braton explained that she has recently collected commuter Census data for her board and found that “a majority” of CB 10 residents drive to work, opting out of the subway or buses. CB 2 Chairman Pat O’Brien also responded to a specific element of the DCP’s parking plan: parking reductions for new and existing housing on a case-by-case basis through discretionary review. “You’ll have to double the staff at the BSA or DOB or whoever’s going to do it, because every one of [the developers] is going to want to do it,” he said. In a statement released Tuesday, Borough President Melinda Katz reiterated these concerns. “In a transit desert like the Borough of Queens, the reality for many families is having to rely on cars to get to work,” she said. “For our seniors, we want them to maintain an independent, active quality of living for as long as possible. Overactive Bladder: Don’t Let It Get in the Way of an Active Life Overactive bladder (OAB) is a very common condition, but many people have trouble discussing it with their doctor because of embarrassment, a lack of knowledge about treatment options and the misconception that it is a “normal” part of aging. Farzeen Firoozi, MD, urologist specializing in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery at the Arthur Smith Institute for Urology, part of North Shore-LIJ Health System, discusses what you need to know about this condition. Bladder frequency and urgency, also commonly known as overactive bladder (OAB), is a condition affecting millions of Americans. It can be found in people who have conditions such as diabetes, stroke, dementia, Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis, but it may be an indication of other diseases or conditions that would also warrant medical attention. It commonly appears without apparent cause. Some symptoms of OAB include: • Urinary urgency, or being unable to postpone the need to urinate • Frequency of urination, or the need to urinate at least eight times per day • Urge incontinence, or leakage of urine when one gets the urge to urinate • Nocturia, or the need to get up and urinate at least two times per night If you or a loved one has symptoms of overactive bladder, call (516) 734-8500 today to make an appointment with one of our urologists. For more information, visit NorthShoreLIJ.com/Smith. Customized Relief Options We offer a range of treatments designed to manage most symptoms of OAB. Depending on the causes of your condition, these may include: • Dietary modifications • Very safe and mild medications • Physical therapy for the bladder and the pelvic floor • Non-invasive surgery — for a small fraction of patients when the above options are ineffective If you think you have a problem, you shouldn’t wait. OAB can get in the way of your work, social life, relationships, exercise, sleep, and overall quality of life. The Smith Institute for Urology has resources for men and women who want to discuss these symptoms and treatment options with a physician. Our urologists and urogynecologists are at the national forefront for many non-invasive, state-of-the-art procedures to correct incontinence. Page 6 Tribune April 16-22, 2015 • www.queenstribune.com EDIT PAGE In Our OpInIOn Don’t Eliminate Parking The proposal from the City Department of Planning to ease parking requirements in a so-called “Transit Zone” to encourage more affordable and senior housing is a bad idea. In much of the Borough, parking is impossible. In neighborhoods in the “Transit Zone,” like Astoria, Jackson Heights, Ridgewood, Flushing, Woodhaven and Jamaica, residents have long complained of a lack of street parking. Despite the Department of City Planning’s assertion that these neighborhoods are within walking distance of subways, many residents still use and need cars for work, shopping, or other activities. Many homes do not have driveways, or tenants do not have access to them. Queens is not just a bedroom community for people who work and play in Manhattan. Queens, and the City as a whole, needs more affordable and senior housing. But we believe it cannot come at the cost of parking, which is also a necessity for many seniors and residents who need affordable housing. They have cars too. We urge the city to rethink their proposal to eliminate parking requirements. Queens, for better or worse, is a Borough that includes a lot of drivers. And we urge residents concerned about the plan to get informed about the proposal and make their voices heard at the public hearings that are to be scheduled. Look for the times and location to be published in the Queens Tribune. In YOur OpInIOn Bayside Parking Options T To The Editor: here are other options to building a multi-story parking structure at the existing municipal parking lot on 214th Place and 41st Avenue to solve the shortage of parking spots on Bell Blvd. in Bayside. Why not approach the Metropolitan Transportation Authority Long Island Rail Road for utilization of air rights over both the tracks and platforms at the Bayside LIRR Station? Construction of a street level deck could easily provide dozens of parking spaces directly adjacent to Bell Blvd. They could be allocated on a fifty-fifty basis between LIRR commuters and local shoppers. LIRR riders would benefit by being protected from rain, snow and wind. It is possible to both design and construct a deck which could preserve RIP Maryalice Broussard A To The Editor: good friend of our community passed away recently. Maryalice Broussard lived in Auburndale for decades and was a Vice President of the Auburndale Improvement Association, Inc. She was very active in the civic organization for many years and remained so right up to her death. She left us on March 30th at the age of 92 after a brief illness. Just a few weeks ago, there was an Executive Board meeting of the civic organization held at Maryalice’s home. This remarkable woman was still contributing ideas and thoughts to ensure that her community remained a desirable place to live for all the residents. She was concerned about zoning, about education, about quality of life; any issue that had an impact in Auburndale and beyond. She truly was a role model that showed that even though a person may be up in years, one could still be a contributing member of the community natural light for those on the LIRR platform level. Another option is to replace the existing Bayside LIRR ticket office and adjacent drop off area with a multi-story parking garage. A replacement ticket office could be built as part of the parking garage or over the existing overpass which connects both inbound and outbound platforms. Larry Penner, Great Neck and an articulate voice of reason and common sense. Maryalice will be much missed by her loving family, devoted friends and especially her civic friends. Study Aims To Ease Bell Blvd. Parking Woes By Daniel Offner Staff Writer Trying to park your car along Bell Boulevard in Bayside can be a daunting task. So, in an effort to address some of the parking woes along the boulevard, members of the Bayside Village Business Improvement District met on Tuesday evening to workshop some plausible short-term and long-term solutions to the problem. “We want to balance the parking needs of businesses along Bell Boulevard and minimize congestion,” Lyle Sclair, executive director of the Bayside Village BID, stated as the reason behind the parking study. Receiving $20,000 from New York City Councilman Paul Vallone (DBayside) to help fund the study, the BID issued a Request for Proposals last year. As a result, they hired both the engineering firm VHB and parking consultants with the firm DESMAN Associates to conduct the study. According to Matt Carmody, director of transportation with VHB, the overall purpose of the parking study was to look at some of the different issues that contribute to the parking shortfall along Bell and recommend short-term and long-term improvements to address them. “By June we hope to complete the study and our recommendations,” Carmody said. “Within a year, we hope to implement some of the shortterm solutions.” Carmody said that one short-term solution is to have some of the businesses with private parking lots hash out a deal with neighboring businesses, in an effort to consolidate space along the boulevard. Another aspect of the study highlighted on-street parking in areas a quarter-mile around the Long Island Rail Road station, which was used to determine approximately how many commuters would park all-day long. Based on data collected from MuniMeters along Bell Boulevard, consultants were able to determine that parking is easiest in the morning before peak hours, from 1 to 7 p.m., when it gets to be impossible to find a spot. One consultant with DESMAN Associates said some of the parking woes that shoppers and businesses experience are due to New York City parking regulations, which have a much different impact in more suburban LEGAL NOTICE LEGAL NOTICE LEGAL NOTICE Notice is hereby given that an Order entered by the Civil Court, Queens County MAR 26 2015 bearing Index Number NC-000064-15/ QU, a copy of which may be examined at the Office of the Clerk, located at 89-17 Sutphin Boulevard, Jamaica, NY 11435, grants me the right to: Assume the name of (First) Jonathan (Last) Barragan My present name is (First) Jonathan (Last) Barragan-Atenco (infant) My present address is 8458 130th Street, Kew Gardens, NY 11415-2808 My place of birth is Queens, NY My date of birth is December 22, 2014 ________________________ Notice of Formation of Thrust Drilling LLC. CB 9 Angry Over Katz’s Sacking Of Member By DOmenick rafter Editor in Chief Community Board 9 took direct aim at the top of the Borough’s civic and political food chain. Angry over the ousting of longtime board member Dr. Vincent Evangelista, CB 9 voted to send a letter to Borough President Melinda Katz insisting that she reinstate him and suggesting that his removal stemmed from Katz’s disapproval over the process to hire a new district manager, a process Evangelista led. In March, Katz sought to slow down the hiring process amid questions of its transparency, but Evangelista, who chaired the Board’s hiring committee, and fellow Board members said there was no reason to and moved forward with hiring Lisa Gomes, a longtime employee in the Board’s Borough Hall office, to replace longtime district manager Mary Ann Carey. Critics of the process said it was rigged from the beginning in favor of Gomes, but members of CB 9 and the hiring committee note that meetings were held in the open, including a February meeting in which committee members reviewed resumes in front of media and members of the public. Evangelista was the only Board member whose application for reappointment was not renewed. CB 9 member Sylvia Hack read the Board’s letter aloud at Tuesday night’s meeting in Richmond Hill questioning Katz’s office. The letter noted Evangelista’s perfect attendance record and blaming his removal on the district manager hiring committee he chaired. “It was the members of this board who decided to accept the committee’s recommendations on the final decision on the three candidates. It was our board’s decision as a whole to move forward with the election.” The Board voted overwhelmingly in favor of sending the letter with only two votes in the negative. One of them was from Joel Kuszai of Woodhaven who explained his vote on Twitter. “I don’t have any sense of what went on with the search, have no opinion about [Evangelista], who seems like a great guy,” he said. “Rumors and fact are indistinguishable for me at this point. So it’s not personal, not about the search, or even on the merits of the ask. In addition to the rate hike, the DEP is proposing to freeze the minimum water charge of $1.27 for customers using less than 100 gallons per day, expand the Home Water Assistance Program for 12,500 qualifying low-income homeowners, implement an online billing system and increase credits for the lead and copper monitoring program. According to Colonel Paul Owen, the Army Corps is looking at two options to build a protective flood barrier that would shield southern Queens and the Rockaway Peninsula from floodwaters. The bigger, more expensive option is to build a giant barrier in Jamaica Bay near the Marine Parkway Bridge. The alternative plan would see a smaller barrier go up around different parts on the Jamaica Bay coastal area. The ideas were announced during a Superstorm Sandy flood insurance town hall last week in Howard Beach, which was organized by Rep. Hakeem Jefferies (D-Brooklyn, Queens) Owen said either barrier would aim to reduce flood surge from flowing onto land and penetrating homes. Sandy’s storm surge, which reached several feet in parts of southern Queens, caused most of the damage. No matter which plan is ultimately chosen, according to Owen, residents will not see the barriers any time soon. He said either option would take about two years to plan - which would see construction beginning in 2018 - and about five years to build. Owen said the larger barrier would cost more and take longer to build while the second plan would be cheaper and could be done in less time. He estimated that the larger barrier would cost almost $3 billion to build. “The most comprehensive plan is probably the surge barrier. We just got to see if there’s the appetite for that much money to build it,” the Colonel said. Owen said they are hoping to make a decision on which plan to move forward with by September of this year so the planning phase can begin. There will be two public hearings this month specifically about the flood barrier proposals. The first will be on April 22 at the Knights of Columbus in Rockaway. The second will be one week later, April 29, at Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn. Reach Luis Gronda at (718) 3577400, Ext. 127, lgronda@queenstribune.com, or @luisgronda. Gastropub OK’d At Lively Hearing By Jackie strawBridGe Staff Writer A new gastropub from the owners of LIC Bar got a green light for a liquor license at a standing-room-only Community Board 2 hearing last Wednesday. To be located at 47-02 Vernon Blvd., the eatery promises a 40-seat restaurant and a 12- to 14-seat bar. Whereas LIC Bar is a music venue, owner Brian Porter said his new establishment will be food-focused and will not feature live music. The special hearing for this application was called at a March CB 2 City Services and Public Safety committee meeting, after neighbors William and Beth Garrett expressed concerns about potential noise, according to a report from the LIC Post. Vernon Boulevard residents and business owners took turns debating not only the gastropub’s liquor license application, but also the character of the neighborhood in general, and the impact of late-night establishments on public safety, the local economy and sleeping neighbors. Discussion revolved specifically around whether the restaurant’s bar should be allowed to stay open until the legal last call, 4 a.m. CB 2 member Kenny Greenberg spoke about his experiences living near late-night bars. “It’s colorful, let’s put it that way,” Greenberg said, before going on to describe finding vomit along the streets and being awoken in the middle of the night. Beth Garrett spoke in support of curtailing the gastropub’s hours. “It’s not to limit businesses,” she said. “It’s to make a compromise between people who live here – quality of life – and business.” Others, however, argued that CB 2 should encourage late-night establishments, in order to provide services for Long Island City’s booming population and boost economic growth. “Let the small businesses grow here,” one neighbor said. “Don’t drive people into the City, or Brooklyn, or even into Sunnyside.” Ultimately, Porter struck on a compromise that the Committee found appealing. He suggested keeping his kitchen open late, perhaps until 2 a.m. “They’re going to sit down, relax, have something to eat as well,” he said. The Committee subsequently approved the liquor license application in a unanimous vote. Chris Mullin and Bill Wennington turned down the Blue Devils to play for Lou Carnesecca’s Redmen. Mullin became the program’s all-time leading scorer, and led St. John’s to the 1985 Final Four. Since then, Mike Krzyewski has led Duke to 12 Final Four appearances and five national championships. St. John’s is still looking to make it back to the Final Four. Now Mullin returns to Utopia Parkway as the head coach of the Red Storm, replacing Steve Lavin. Although there is a lot of excitement, much has changed in the last 30 years. “It’s not the same school he went to. The biggest mistake they ever made was building dorms,” said Mike Jarvis, who coached the Red Storm from 1998 to 2004. “Players went to St. John’s because they could stay at home, pay rent, drive a car. They got a lot of kids who would get a stipend. That was the beginning of the downfall.” When Carnesecca retired in 1992, assistant coach Brian Mahoney was promoted. But since his departure in 1996, the school has looked for someone with St. John’s ties. “From my hiring to the present day, they were never satisfied with someone outside of their own family,” said Fran Fraschilla, Mahoney’s replacement. Fraschilla was fired after a 22-win season in 1998. “It doesn’t matter how hard you try, unless you’re getting to the tournament consistently. I felt I wasn’t a St. John’s guy, and that permeated through my two years at the school.” Fraschilla was replaced by Jarvis, who also had no previous connection to St. John’s. “They always wanted one of their own,” Jarvis said. “They got exactly what they wanted. He’s a perfect fit, the fit they’ve been waiting for.” “A John Calipari or a Rick Pitino would have won big, but it wouldn’t have been the same as Chris Mullin,” Fraschilla, who played with Mullin in Marine Park, Brooklyn in the 1960s, said. “I knew him since he was 14. I do think he’ll do a good job. I have an interesting perspective.” Mullin has never coached or recruited, but he’s hired Matt Abdelmassih as an assistant coach. Abdelmassih had been the assistant at Iowa State. St. John’s has already landed Tariq Owens, a transfer from New St John’s head coach Chris Mullin at his introductory press conference with his former coach Lou Carnesecca. Tennessee, and Darien Williams, who committed to Iowa State but instead follows Abdelmassih to St. John’s. The hiring of Abdelmassih was critical for Mullin, given that Mullin has been much closer to the NBA game. “No matter how much you know, it’s different,” Jarvis said. Mullin is also expected to hire Barry Rohrssen, who served as an assistant at Kentucky. Being a college coach means a lot more than just coaching on the sidelines. “The toughest thing he’ll get used to is how many directions he’ll get pulled in,” Fraschilla said. “I spoke 75 times in two years at fundraisers and alumni events.” The school is hoping Mullin’s credentials will bring in the top high school players. “How often does a kid get to play for a Hall of Fame player? Especially in New York, that makes all the difference,” said Jarvis, who coached Mullin in the 1981 McDonald’s All-American game. “Kids are impressed by titles. What you wear, what car you drive. He’s a soft-spoken guy. I think he’ll be perfect.” St. John’s wanted a big name to lead the program and got it. “He’s going to do an unbelievable job,” said Norm Roberts, who coached St. John’s from 2004-10. “Hiring someone of that magnitude, hiring him is terrific. He’ll do a great job.” Mullin’s NBA experience should Clockwise from left: Former coaches Norm Roberts, Mike Jarvis and Fran Fraschilla share their thoughts on Chris Mullin. serve him well, according to Fraschilla. “It will generally come naturally to him. The NBA is much more sophisticated than college. If he coaches his team like an NBA team, I think he’ll be better for it. Kids want to play faster, they want their shot and he was a good shooter. All of that knowledge he has, this won’t be the equivalent of brain surgery. Chris is going to be around a great staff. He has a terrific basketball mind and he has pride in restoring St. John’s.” Some coaches and teams have had difficulty following the 1985 Final Four season. The ’91 and ’99 teams made the Elite Eight but have been somewhat forgotten. “The ’99 Elite Eight was pretty special. People would like to forget it for some reason,” Jarvis said. “In 2000, we went undefeated in February. We beat Duke, Syracuse and UConn in one week and were a 2-seed in the tournament. If they don’t send us out West maybe we make the Elite Eight or Final Four.” Mullin’s popularity may be through the roof, but Jarvis said fans should make sure the expectations are realistic. “I hope they don’t call him ‘King’,” Jarvis said. “They called me ‘King’ once. I wish him nothing but the best. He’s a great, great guy.” www.queenstribune.com • April 16-22, 2015 Tribune Page 17 LEGAL NOTICE LEGAL NOTICE LEGAL NOTICE LEGAL NOTICE LEGAL NOTICE LEGAL NOTICE SUPPLEMENTAL SUMMONS Index No.: 702553/2014 Date of Filing: March 11, 2015 SUPREME COURT OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK COUNTY OF Queens Nationstar Mortgage LLC d/b/a Champion Mortgage Company, Plaintiff, -against- PATRICIA A. Summer camps are a great way to ensure children continue to grow socially, emotionally, cognitively and physically, while learning skills that will serve them well in the coming school year and beyond. Working with SEER, an independent research organization, the Y surveyed nearly 40,000 parents with children enrolled in Y camp programs. The survey revealed that 91 percent of parents said they agreed day camp programs helped their kids make new friends. In addition, 81 percent said they agreed the program helped their kids discover what they can achieve, while 86 percent agreed their child felt a sense of belonging at camp. Taking time to research summer camp options is critical to finding the best fit for your child. Consider a camp program that offers learning, exploration and achievement to help make your child’s summer the best ever. Here are some questions to ask when selecting a camp: Does your child want to attend a day camp or a resident camp? Typically, day camps are a child’s first camp experience that prepares him or her for overnight camps later on, but there’s no rule that says kids must start close to home. It all depends on what you’re looking for and what’s comfortable for your child. Most importantly, you want your child to have fun at camp. As a nonprofit committed to youth development, the Y offers more than 1,800 day and 300 resident camp programs. Y camps focus on three areas proven to impact child development: friendship, accomplishment and belonging. What camp size is best? Make sure your camp meets the recommended leader-to-participant ratio. For example, there should be a 1:10 ratio for camps catering to 8 to 10 year olds. Also, ask yourself how your child interacts with peers. Some kids enjoy large camps where they can make many friends, while others do better in smaller groups, like a few dozen campers, where there’s no fear of getting lost in the crowd. Does the camp have qualified staff? Selecting a camp requires trusting that the camp selects well-qualified young adults and trains them well to safely lead programs that provide values lessons for your child. Learn about the staff and camp directors to be assured that the camp screens, carefully selects and trains their leaders. Many camps are accredited by the American Camp Association, which requires adherence to a wide range of safety practices. Does your child want a general camp or a specialty camp? Many organizations like the Y offer more classic programs that get back to nature with rustic cabins and a variety of outdoor activities. Some offer specialty programs with a single goal in mind, such as nature education, training for a sport, horseback riding or performing music. Talk to your children about what type of camp interests them and would best provide their ideal summer experience. Traditional camps that offer a wide variety of outdoor programs can be very impactful, and provide kids with choices that they can make independently. Does the camp encourage healthy eating and physical activity? The collaboration between first lady Michelle Obama, the Partnership for a Healthier America and the Y has focused on developing healthy habits in kids, families and communities across the nation. These healthy eating and physical activity (HEPA) standards have been adopted by summer day and resident camps. Make sure your child’s camp program offers plenty of health-conscious meals and snacks while providing plenty of chances for exercise. When kids are out of school, they can face hurdles that prevent them from reaching their full potential, related to hunger, water safety, academics, safe spaces to play and health. Through summer camp and other youth development programs, the Y helps more than 9 million youth nationwide “hop the gap” and achieve more, providing a safe to place to learn, stay healthy and build friendships. Taste of Sunnyside, presented by the Sunnyside Shines Business Improvement District, is back for another year under the train at 46th Street and Queens Boulevard. The event takes place May 19 starting at 6:30 p.m. Tickets cost $35 and are on sale now at tasteofsunnyside.com. For $60, attendees can get early entry at 5:30 p.m. Many of this year’s participating restaurants are new to both the festival and the neighborhood, such as Dumplings and Things and the soon-to-open Soleluna. A number of popular Sunnyside staples are also on the menu, including Salt and Fat, Murphy’s Lobster Grill, the Dog and Duck pub and De Mole. Photo Courtesy of sunnyside shines Last year’s Taste of Sunnyside saw about 600 attendees. The event aims not only to support local business, but also to emphasize and promote the area’s diversity, billing itself as a “culinary passport.” Keeping with this theme, the BID has booked the Thalia Spanish Theatre with Danza Espana for a performance, among other performers. “Bringing all the flavors of Sunnyside into one visible food festival is an amazing opportunity for local residents and visitors alike to discover their new favorite restaurant, and a great way to help promote Sunnyside as a restaurant destination,” BID director Rachel Thieme said in a statement. “Last year’s event exceeded our wildest expectations and we’re excited to be back under the 7 train again this year to sample all this delicious food.” According to a Sunnyside Shines spokesperson, about 600 people attended last year’s Taste of Sunnyside and the BID is expecting the same numbers this year. To coincide with Taste of Sunnyside, the BID created a local shopping incentive; a Taste of Sunnyside Discount Card is available for use April 8 through May 31 at participating local businesses. The card and more information on the event are available at tasteofsunnyside.com. Reach Jackie Strawbridge at (718) 357-7400, Ext. 128, jstrawbridge@ queenstribune.com or @JNStrawbridge. Musician Of Queens: Kento Iwasaki By Jackie StrawBridge Staff Writer For Elmhurst-based composer Kento Iwasaki, music has a narrative. The artist draws from a variety of musical and artistic traditions to create compelling songs that tell a story. Iwasaki’s works include everything from orchestral pieces, to narrated folktales, to performance pieces and accompanied spoken word. “I find gestures in music have an inherent theatricality,” Iwasaki said. “My goal as a composer and performer is to have the music communicated to be the central focus; the performer is the conduit of that music world. Similarly, in theater, I strive for the characters and the world to be conveyed, so much that we forget who it is who is performing during the duration of the performance.” Iwasaki has also written operas; his work “Beloved Prey” tells stories of predator animals adopting other animals that would typically be prey. Accompanying the music, shadows of the show’s singers are projected onto a screen “to convey a story of nature with a sense of the mythological,” the composer explained. “I try my best to explore the central themes in each particular story,” Iwasaki said, adding that he is drawn to themes such as nature and familial love. Iwasaki also noted a special interest in communication across borders, cross-cultural encounters and translation. Before coming to the melting pot that is Queens, Iwasaki was well traveled, having lived in Tokyo, Champaign, Ill., Princeton, N.J. and Philadelphia. “I find myself drawn to classical and folk traditions in different parts of the world,” he said. “I personally write music because it conveys another world, some other place that’s just as real as ‘here.’” Iwasaki specializes in a Japanese instrument called the koto. The koto is a 13-string harp played with picks, with potential to create a variety of sound types from scratching, plucking and pushing and pulling the strings. “The instrument can play in nonwestern tuning systems without difficulty. It’s just a matter of tuning it by ear,” the artist explained. “I find myself moved by the simplicity of the koto, by its ‘less is more’ aesthetics.” Music fans can catch Iwasaki at Long Island City’s Secret Theatre in November, as part of the Sound of the Arts Festival, where he will perform “Beloved Prey.” Iwasaki’s music will also accompany the Korean dance group Noree Performing Arts in an upcoming Flushing Town Hall performance, date to be announced. Casino Exhibit Brings Spring To Life The Queens Botanical Garden will be displaying Spring Into Queens, an exclusive horticultural exhibit at Resorts World Casino that highlights floral works of art, for the entire month of April in the Red Wall Gallery. The gallery was designed by Garden staff member Shari Romar and members of the QBG Gallery Committee. The Garden is a place where people, plants and cultures are celebrated through gardens, educational programs and demonstrations of environmental stewardship. “If you have any doubt whether spring has sprung then rush right over to The Red Wall Gallery at Resorts World Casino,” Susan Lacerte, executive director of the Garden said. “QBG’s story – its origins, development and continued flowering – reflect the Borough’s love of plants and community. We are thrilled to show the beauty flowering right here in Queens to patrons at the casino.” The exhibit will also feature photographs from local photographer Dominick Totino. “The QBG holds a special place for me, as when my father was starting his landscape business back in the early 60’s, one of his first biggest contracts was landscaping for the 1964 World’s Fair in Flushing Meadows,” Totino said. “During that time he was asked to save four trees by transplanting them out of the park. Today, those four trees are the ones stand at the main entrance of the QBG.” Resorts World Casino is located at 110-00 Rockaway Blvd., Jamaica and the exhibit is free of charge. HELP FOR HOMEOWNERS IN FORECLOSURE New York State requires that we send you this notice about the foreclosure process. Please read it carefully. SUMMONS AND COMPLAINT You are in danger of losing your home. If you fail to respond to the summons and complaint in this foreclosure action, you may lose your home. Please read the summons and complaint carefully. You should immediately contact an attorney or your local legal aid office to obtain advice on how to protect yourself. SOURCES OF INFORMATION AND ASSISTANCE The State encourages you to become informed about your options in foreclosure. In addition to seeking assistance from an attorney or legal aid, there are government agencies, and non-profit organizations that you may contact for information about possible options, including trying to work with your lender during this process. To locate an entity near you, you may call the toll-free helpline maintained by New York state Banking Department at 1-877-Bank-NYS or visit the Department’s website at www.banking.state.ny.us FORECLOSURE RESCUE SCAMS Be careful of people who approach you with offers to “save” your home. There are individuals who watch for notices of foreclosure actions in order to unfairly profit from a homeowner’s distress. You should be extremely careful about any such promises and any suggestions that you pay them a fee or sign over your deed. State law requires anyone offering such services for profit to enter into a contract which fully describes the services they will perform and fees they will charge, and which prohibits them from taking any money from you until they have completed all such promised services. Section 1303 NOTICE YOU ARE IN DANGER OF LOSING YOUR HOME If you do not respond to this summons and complaint by serving the copy of the answer on the attorney for the mortgage company who filed this foreclosure proceeding against you and filing the answer with the court, a default judgment may be entered and you may lose your home. Speak to an attorney or go to the court where your case is pending for further information on how to answer the summons and protect your property. Sending a payment to your mortgage company will not stop this foreclosure action. YOU MUST RESPOND BY SERVING A COPY OF THE ANSWER ON THE ATTORNEY FOR THE PLAINTIFF MORTGAGE COMPANY) AND FILING AN ANSWER WITH THE COURT. The Mets won 2-0 on Monday afternoon manufacturing enough offense to support deGrom and the bullpen, despite leaving nine runners on base. Last year’s National League Rookie of the Year did not have his best stuff on the mound, but was able to muster up six plus innings with three strikeouts, while giving up seven hits. “When you realize you don’t have that you really got to concentrate and try to make the pitches that you can make,” deGrom said. “My offspeed really wasn’t that good and I was having a hard time locating my fastball, so I really had to bear down mentally and try to get guys out.” Daniel Murphy helped get the Amazin’s on the board first in the bottom of the 4th inning when he knocked a double over rightfielder Grady Sizemore’s head. Travis d’Arnaud helped move him over to the third with a groundout, which set up Juan Lagares for the two-out RBI opportunity. Lagares cracked a groundball back up the box at Harang, who got his glove on it to knock the ball down, but got his cleet stuck in the mound and could not get to the ball fast enough to throw out Lagares at first, allowing Murphy to score the opening run. In the top of the seventh inning, Manager Terry Collins pulled deGrom from the game after giving up back-to-back singles. He left the mound having thrown 99 pitches. Carlos Torres came in and got two straight outs, stranding runners on first and third. Late in spring training, the Mets acquired lefthanded reliever Jerry Blevins, who came in Monday and continued to be lights out against lefthanded batters, getting Odubel Herrera, Chase Utley and Ryan Howard 1-2-3 in the eighth inning. Michael Cuddyer knocked his second hit of the game in the bottom of the eighth. Murphy followed by smacking a groundball to second base, where the normally sure-handed Utley botched the play, allowing the ball to shoot through his legs for an error. This allowed the Mets to manufacture another run as d’Arnaud produced a sacrifice fly bringing in Cuddyer for the second run. “I’d like to wack a few more,” Collins said about the ways the Mets are producing their runs. “We’re just kind of plugging along, plugging Photo by Bruce Adler Mets Shutout Phillies On Opening Day Michael Cuddyer slides in to score a run during the Mets 2-0 win on Monday. along and if something happens, how many times do you see a ball go through Chase Utley’s legs - like never - and so we capitalized and got a run out of it. That’s how we’ve been winning.” Jeurys Familia came in to close out the ninth and gave up a walk to start the inning. But after David Wright came in to calm him down, Familia got Sizemore to ground into a 3-6-1 double play that he finished off himself, inciting some emotion in the newly-named closer. He closed out the game on the next batter for his second save on the young season. “This is a whole different stage. There’s 45,000 people screaming and if we’re going to continue playing like we’re talking, you better get used to it,” Collins said about Familia dealing with the sold out crowd. “This is a good outing for him to get out there and understand the noise and everything else involved, you still got to control yourself and he came back and got some outs.” The Mets announced that Monday’s game set a record for attendance during a regular season game - 43,947. The only time Citi Field saw more people in the stands for baseball was at the 2013 All Star Game. By Domenick RafteR Promoters and sponsors of this year’s planned cricket tournament at Floyd Bennett Field that may feature many of the top cricket stars from the West Indies and elsewhere, announced some specifics of the twoday event last weekend. The games, which will be held Aug. 1 and 2, are attracting a lot of attention from local fans of the sport, which originated in England, but is extremely popular in the West Indies and South Asia and other countries formerly part of the British Empire. The idea for the event came from a similar one that was held in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. in January. “We wanted to bring this to the cricket capital of the United States, the New York area,” tournament pro- moter Pooran Ramnanan said. Gordon Greenidge, a former star player with the West Indies cricket team, which includes players from 15 English-speaking Caribbean country, including Guyana, Trinadad and Tobago and Greenidge’s native Barbados, was on hand Saturday in Ozone Park to announce plans for the games. “I wouldn’t put my name to this if I didn’t think it would happen,” Greenidge said. One issue is lining up the roster of cricket players from all over the world. Ramnanan said the list of participants may change and many players may not be able to commit until the final weeks. Tickets will go on sale in the coming weeks. It will be general admission with one price. Tournament Manager Orville Photo by Domenick Rafter Cricket Stars To Hit The Pitch At Floyd Bennet Field Tournament manager Orville Hall (left), promoter Pooran Ramnanan and West Indies cricket legend Gordon Greenidge announced details of the August game last weekend. Hall said Floyd Bennett Field was chosen over other locations because of the size and the accessibility of the venue, and noted that parking was a major consideration as cricket fans from as far away as New Jersey and Connecticut are expected to attend. Hall said he hoped the event would help the cricket communi- ty grow in the New York area and throughout the country. He said he hoped to bring similar events to other areas with a growing following, such as Texas. Ramnanan said plans are in the early stages to take similar games overseas as well to places such as Guyana and India SPORTS High School Varsity Weekend Schedule Friday 4/17 BASEBALL • 4 p.m. John Adams vs. Benjamin Cardozo @ John Adams Field, 101 St. and 133 Ave., Ozone Park Aviation C&TE vs. Beacon @ Newtown Field, 92nd Street and 57th Avenue, Elmhurst Long Island City vs. Stuyvesant @ Long Island City Field, 33rd Avenue and 13th Street, Long Island City High School for Construction vs. McKee/Staten Island Tech @PALS Oval, North Conduit Avenue and 88th Street, Ozone Park Franklin K.
