You may or may not be aware that KinVillage Vidal Court building has just recently replaced the elevator in the building. The building only has the one elevator therefore; this was a huge undertaking and a very difficult time for many tenants to be able to manage. I wanted to highlight some of the wonderful high points throughout this process. Firstly, the response by volunteers to help support our tenants through this difficult time. It is truly amazing how many volunteers came forward to provide their support and time throughout the four week period. Words cannot say enough in regards to our appreciation of their support. Secondly, to the tenants living in Vidal court that also volunteered their time to support their neighbours in the building, thank you so much. Again, this truly shows our sense of community spirit throughout KinVillage. Throughout the whole process, the volunteers provided meal service, grocery shopping, laundry service, delivered mail, and newspapers, provided companionship. This was not just for a few hours or a few days, it was four weeks of support, truly remarkable. Thank you to Susan Martin Coordinator of Volunteers, for arranging and scheduling the volunteers throughout the process. Also to the recreation department who provided extra programming on the second and third floor of the building. To all the tenants in Vidal Court thank you so much for all your understanding, patience, and support throughout this difficult time and I hope everyone enjoys using the new and safer elevator in the building. Regards Carol Howard Director of Housing November 2013 Check out our web site in colour at www.kinvillage.org 2 CEO Message November 2013 On October 5th, I was delighted to join the party celebrating the 10th “Birthday” of ElderCollege Delta. ECD was established 10 years ago under the umbrella of KinVillage’s Community Centre. KinVillage’s Mission is to support older adults to live their lives fully; we value community L to R: Kerry Bentley (Board Chair), Paulette Tattersall and we value growth. Over the years, ECD (Chair, ECD Council), Donna Ellis (CEO) has provided more than 600 mature students, not only with opportunities to learn something new, try something different, in short, to grow….. but, also opportunities for fun and companionship….in short, cultivating community. KinVillage is very pleased and proud to have been able to support ECD, led by a strong and dedicated group of volunteers, through 10 years of inspiring, encouraging, and enhancing lifelong learning in our community. Congratulations and thank you ECD! Sincerely, As Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia I am pleased to extend my congratulations to ElderCollege Delta on its 10th anniversary. I am a strong proponent of continual learning and am so pleased that this volunteer-led initiative has encouraged elders in the community to continue their knowledge journey. It is a wonderful way to learn new skills, meet interesting and likeminded people and keep citizens engaged in the community. Thank you to all the volunteers who have made ElderCollege Delta such a success. Your dedication and selflessness is truly inspiring! On behalf of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and all the people of British Columbia, congratulations on reaching this milestone and may this important initiative continue for years to come. The Honourable Judith Guichon, OBC Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia November 2013 Check out our web site in colour at www.kinvillage.org 3 Approaching Remembrance Day and Christmas thoughts of peace are on our minds, peace protected by our armed forces and longed for peace of every kind. Are you longing for, as I am, all violence and wars to cease; envisioning a harmonious world where love and joy increase? Are we peaceful in the way we live, avoiding judgment and hurtful chatter? Do we truly believe that love and joy are what make our lives really matter? They are the most important gifts that we can give and receive and the only way we’ll have peace on earth. We need to truly believe. Peace has to start with you and me through love and respect for each other, accepting that we have differing views as we’re unique from one another. I have my beliefs and traditions and they feel right to me. It’s not offensive if your beliefs differ, we can share peace that’s meant to be. Ida is a Danish hairdresser, recuperating from a long bout of illness, who's just been left by her husband for a younger woman. The fates of these two bruised souls are about to intertwine, as they embark for a trip to Italy to attend the wedding of Patrick and Astrid, Philip's son and Ida's daughter. With warmth, affection and confidence, Susanne Bier has shaken a cocktail of love, loss, absurdity, humor, and delicately drawn characters that will leave only the hardest heart untouched. It is a film about the simple yet profound pains and joys of moving on - and forward - with your life. Review: There's something about a free spirit, even in a movie, that makes everything and everyone around her feel more vibrant. Tuesday, November 19th - Still Mine - In his first lead role after decades of playing supporting characters, James Cromwell gives a tour de force performance. Still Mine, is an exquisitely crafted and deeply affecting love story about a couple in their twilight years. Based on true events and laced with wry humor, it tells the heartfelt tale of Craig Morrison who comes up against the system when he sets out to build a more suitable house for his ailing wife Irene (Genevive Boujold). Hauled into court and facing jail, Craig takes a final stance against all odds in a truly inspirational story.
