Volunteers Beautify Folsom Boulevard World’s Fastest Monster Truck Speeds Toward Sacramento Independent Page 3 Page 3 Grapevine VOLUME 47 • ISSUE 18 Walk and Roll Rancho Cordova PROUDLY SERVING RANCHO CORDOVA & SACRAMENTO COUNTY May 1, 2015 JustServe Helping Hands $10,000 Fine for Water Service Project Removes 900 Feet of Fencing Infractions, says Brown SACRAMENTO REGION, CA (MPG) - Governor Brown, meeting with mayors from across the state, announced he will propose legislation to help local officials better enforce conservation requirements and will direct state agencies to streamline environmental review of local water supply projects. “These measures will strengthen the ability of local officials to build new water projects and ensure that water is not wasted,” said Governor Brown. “As this drought stretches on, we’ll continue to do whatever is necessary to help communities save more water.” The proposed legislation will give new enforcement authority to local entities that don’t currently have it and increase potential penalties against water wasters. Photo by Ron Aguilar Poggetto cancelled the two projects because of safety considerations. “The American River Parkway Foundation’s whole mission is about volunteers becoming stewards of the Parkway,” Poggetto said. “So on a given year we have about 4,000 volunteers that do work for us and put in about 22,000 hours to improve the Parkway. Whether that’s removing trash, graffiti, or taking care of the flora and fauna it’s very, very important.” Rancho Cordova resident Erin Seymour was project manager of the projects that were called off, and they may be rescheduled in the future. Sacramento County Natural Resource Specialist Mary Maret oversaw Saturday’s project for fence removal, and project management was led By Margaret Snider RANCHO CORDOVA, CA (MPG) - The rain last Friday, though welcome, caused the cancellation of two of the three Saturday service projects of JustServe Helping Hands, an annual event sponsored by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and open to all members of the community. On April 25th, the volunteers carried on with the third project and in a matter of hours removed more than 900 feet of fencing at the American River near Dedo Way. The cancelled projects were to have taken place at River Bend Park and El Manto oak groves under the oversight of Dianna Poggetto, executive director of the American River Parkway Foundation. by Michael Goold, director of public affairs for the Sacramento Cordova Stake of the Mormon Church, along with Seymour and Clayton Compton of Mather. Maret said that the County had wanted the fence to come down last year but hadn’t quite figured out what method to use, so when she knew she had a lot of volunteers, she thought this was a good place to put them. “They did such a nice job and were so organized and brought their tools and made breakfast for everybody,” Maret said. “It was very pleasant and they’re great people to work with.” About 200 people showed up for breakfast at River Bend Park, including a number who had signed up for the cancelled projects Continued on page 11 • Allow penalties to be issued administratively by wholesale and retail water agencies, as well as city and county governments. This change speeds up an infraction process involving courts that was established in last year’s emergency drought legislation. • Enable these entities to enforce local water restrictions against water waste, as well as conservation restrictions established by the State Water Resources Control Board. • Allow local public agencies to deputize staff to issue water conservation-related warnings and citations. Children of all ages will have the opportunity to touch, climb on, and explore over 20 machines and unique vehicles. This free event will allow kids to learn about the vehicles they see on the road and television every day. In addition to machines, children can visit the Kids Zone filled with bounce houses, games, balloon animals, and face painting. The first hour of the event is horn-free to accommodate children with special needs and sensitive ears. “We were so excited to bring this event to our sports center last year. The turnout showed us that the community was excited as well. We are really looking forward to having another great event this year, especially with some of the new attractions,” said Jason Kukkola, recreation coordinator of Mather Sports Center. The Independent • 5 May 1, 2015 Students Enjoy Morning of Science Facts and Fun at STEM Expo Story and photos by Margaret Snider RANCHO CORDOVA, CA (MPG) - On April 24th, Riverview STEM Academy in Rancho Cordova played host to 14 different business and organization exhibitors for a morning of hands-on scientific experiences as students interacted with the wonders of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). “They’ve been watching tadpoles with microscopes, building energy, and playing with wind tunnels,” said Principal Tony Peterson. “It’s fantastic. I’m very impressed with what all the businesses put together.” SMUD, the principle sponsor of the Expo, presented tiny model cars that circled a track solely by use of solar power, and the children were able to put motors together and figure out how to orient solar panels for the maximum effect. “Schools like this one help train the next generation of leaders and engineers in the energy field,” said Jacobe Caditz, energy advisor with SMUD. “The energy industry is changing so rapidly now we’re going to need these kids to grow up and have the experience and background to be able to lead in the energy industry.” C l a s s e s o f k i n d e rg a r t e n through fourth grade students, accompanied by their teachers, enthusiastically scampered (in an orderly manner) through each exhibit, getting their passports stamped at each one they visited. Every exhibit allowed the children direct involvement with science, technology, engineering, or mathematics principles. As an example, the Cisco Webex exhibit allowed the children to communicate using visual-audio conferencing with others in Bangalore, India; Denver, Colorado; and several other locations simultaneously, as they would if they were in a visual conference call. At the Aerojet exhibit, it really was rocket science in which the children were participating. “I think my favorite was the rocket science one,” said Jazmine Savorn, 9, a fourth grader. “We got to see how you can use liquid nitrogen and (learned) about Silly Putty. “I learned that they didn’t have enough original rubber when they were in the world war, so they made the Silly Putty. It wasn’t really good for the world war, but it’s been around for 50 years for kids to play with, as a toy.” At the Intel exhibit, the kids donned “clean suits,” head and shoe covers, and face masks just like the technicians do at Intel and got to see and handle the real insides of a computer. Sacramento Splash had the kids viewing the tadpoles, demonstrated water runoff on a three-dimensional relief map, and displayed a live king snake. The MAD Science exhibit spanned distances between magnetic bars with multiple iron rods and discs, in a manner that appeared impossible—but wasn’t. All of the exhibits had an enthusiasic reception. Beatrice Tetteh, pediatrician at the Rancho Cordova WellSpace Health clinic, joined in with a booth at the last minute because nurse practitioner Delilah Mergupe, whose children attend Riverview, mentioned the Expo in passing. “I’m really interested in not just health care but health education and community advocacy,” Students at Riverview STEM Academy examine marshmallows under vacuum conditions at the STEM Expo Aerojet exhibit. “Basically, it’s the concept of a vacuum, the vacuum of space,” said Mark Graham, principle chemist at Aerojet and the presenter of the vacuum demonstration. “It’s very visual to them and something they can understand.” Tetteh said. “For this event, helping kids see what’s involved in a healthcare career, I thought it would be a great opportunity.” Some parents were able to attend the Expo as well. Colleen Cadwallader, who is volunteer PTA secretary at Riverview, helped recruit and sign up exhibitors for the event. Call 773-1111 Plant a Tree for Arbor Day RANCHO CORDOVA, CA (MPG) - On Friday, April 24th, City representatives and community members planted a willow oak tree at City Hall in celebration of National Arbor Day 2015. The tree is a gift from the Sacramento Tree Foundation. One of their primary goals is to plant five million trees in the region by 2025, and Rancho Cordova was one of the first cities to get on board. The City has planted over 30 trees on City properties since incorporation in 2003. The Sacramento Shade Tree Program offers up to 10 free shade trees to SMUD customers. It is an opportunity, as our theme suggests, for Remembering our Veterans and Honoring the California National Guard. “Always ready, always there.” Veterans are fewer in number every year. We lose more WWII and Korean Veterans every year, and the Vietnam Veterans are beginning to add to that shrinking number. The Veterans of the Gulf War, Iraq War, and Afghanistan War are continually being asked to do more every year. They give years of their lives while serving their country. Yet I have found that even after giving those years of their lives to their country, some don’t think of themselves as Veterans. Their orders send them to isolated places of the world for months or years, and they are separated from their families. Their duties and jobs make them responsible for protecting their families and the rest of our country from countries and/or terrorists who would and have harmed and killed innocents in our nation like on 9/11. Some still think that even though they have given us many years of their lives to protect us, unless they are in a war zone, have been wounded, or other things that they didn’t do then, they aren’t Veterans. Educating the Veterans is another goal that has to be reached. When a person signs up and is sworn into the military and are trained on what to do in their field, they receive orders. Some receive orders that send them to a war zone, and others do not. When I was in the U.S. Air Force, my orders didn’t send me to Vietnam. My orders told me to get on a KC135 and fly to Alaska, and to Guam, and to Okinawa, and to begin laying out the fabric of the quilt of history that was part of our country’s involvement in Vietnam. Obeying your orders is what you do when serving your country. I looked at the 60s from the 1760s and the 1860s and the 1960s and found that either the citizens of our country were preparing for war (1760s), or engaged in the Civil War (1860s), or engaged in the Vietnam War (1960s). The 1960s also included some of the most tumultuous times in our history. In addition to the Vietnam War, there was the “sex revolution,” flower children, changing music (what else is new), the President being assassinated, two other leaders being assassinated, and we landed a man on the moon. The most important thing that affected Veterans was the beginning of the end of the Draft. That has changed our military to an all-volunteer military. Personally, I think having a draft again would force people to give two years of service to their country. It could be the military, but it could also be community service of different types. Such service could be two years of working for your church, or helping the poor, or building roads, etc. But no matter what the service was, it would be paid time giving back to your country. You would have to work wherever your job was for two years, and like the military, you would have to work with people you wouldn’t otherwise work with. You would have to learn about yourself. That would help people who do not have to do anything for anyone but themselves. Kind of scary for some! From Mayor Bob McGarvey, God bless, and see you next time. And city and county officials appear to finally be getting comfortable with how to regulate it. The Rancho Cordova City Council updated its five-year-old ordinance in January, joining an increasing number of local jurisdictions in outlawing outdoor growing. Mayor Bob McGarvey said the city has had quite a few complaints, including the skunky odor. “My wife used to teach, and they had to move a class out of a portable classroom because the smell from somebody growing in the backyard next door was making it impossible to teach,” he said. “We had a lady come to a meeting. She and her daughter were very ill from the smell.” Police detective Mark Baxter said public safety and security has been an even greater concern. “What we were seeing was increased crime,” he said. “Home invasion robberies, theft, and homicides. When you don’t have a permit, these guys are doing some crazy wiring. We were having houses nearly burn down.” Also, indoor cultivation is prohibited at residences where persons under 18 live. “They’re still subject to the odor and all the things that come with it,” said Baxter. “They’re using quite a few chemicals to speed up growth these days.” The revised ordinance restricts growing to five-by-five square foot indoor plots that reduce the number of mature plants that can be grown to six. Lighting also cannot exceed 1,200 watts. In November of 2010, residents passed a measure that requires all marijuana growers to pay $600 per square foot for up to 25 square feet. “If for some reason the Federal Government would actually change or eliminate Federal law, which still makes marijuana illegal, then we already have a tax in place,” said McGarvey. There have been complaints, including in lawsuits filed in the other parts of the state, that the changes make it a lot more difficult to afford growing medical marijuana. McGarvey said patients can still find dispensaries just outside the city limits. Dispensaries are now banned inside the city limits, mainly due to worries about crime. Baxter said the new ordinance should make it much easier for law enforcement to control use. “The cost of enforcement was pretty high,” he said. “We had to keep coming back, checking on outdoor growths. But a lot of people don’t want to pay the cost of an indoor grow. They don’t want to pay for the equipment. They don’t want to pay the electricity. I would say we’ve probably seen at least a 50% reduction in the number of grows we’ve responded to this year.” Violators face citations with fines. But Baxter said that has not been enforced yet. “We’ll still go out on an education basis,” he said. “They’re still their personal property, technically. We say you need to move this inside into your own grow room and get that permitted. We’ll be back in the next couple or three days to see that you’ve complied.” But Baxter agrees the true impact of the new ordinance won’t be known, or felt, until plants start getting larger, around June or July and through the fall harvest. Local water agencies with existing authorities to enforce against water waste can continue to use those authorities. Under the proposed legislation, any monetary penalties from this enforcement will be used for local conservation efforts. Separately, to streamline environmental permitting for critical water supply projects, the Governor has directed his Office of Planning and Research and other state agencies to help local water agencies reduce the time required to comply with staterequired environmental reviews. These permit streamlining efforts will focus on projects that can increase local water supplies with limited environmental impacts. The Governor’s Office will also explore legislative changes that can speed up delivery of critical water supply projects. In recent weeks, Governor Brown has convened top agricultural, environmental, urban water agency, and business leaders from across California to discuss the state’s drought and conservation efforts. In April, Governor Brown announced the first ever 25% statewide mandatory water reductions and a series of actions to help save water, increase enforcement to prevent wasteful water use, streamline the state’s drought response, and invest in new technologies that will make California more drought resilient. This order included measures to help replace lawns with drought-tolerant landscaping and old appliances with more water and energy efficient models; cut water use at campuses, golf courses, cemeteries, and other large landscapes; prevent potable water irrigation at new developments unless waterefficient drip systems are used; and stop watering of ornamental grass on public street medians. Within days of the Governor’s order, the State Water Resources Control Board released its framework to achieve the mandatory water reductions and the California Energy Commission approved new water appliance standards to save billions of gallons of water per year. The California Department of Water Resources also announced that due to the severe drought it will install an emergency temporary rock barrier across a Sacramento San Joaquin Delta channel to help prevent the saltwater contamination of water that 25 million Californians depend on. These measures build on unprecedented action by the State Water Resources Control Board over the past year to prohibit other wasteful water use and encourage Californians to conserve, including strict limits on outdoor irrigation (two days a week in much of California) and bans on hosing down outdoor surfaces, decorative water fountains that don’t recirculate water, and car washing without an automatic shut-off nozzle. Bars and restaurants are also now required to only serve water upon request and hotels must ask guests staying multiple nights whether linens and towels need to be washed. Governor Brown proclaimed a drought state of emergency in January 2014, and for more than two years the state’s experts have been managing water resources to deal with the effects of the drought, which include severely curtailed water supplies to agricultural producers, farmworker job losses due to fallowed fields, drinking water vulnerability in communities across California, heightened fire danger, and threats to endangered and threatened fish and wildlife. Consider this yourself for a minute. Marvin had opened the mail that morning and in it was the Fenwick glass fly rod he’d ordered. Oh, it was used, of course. But there’s a feel to a Fenwick that only a man dedicated to a life of using dry flies can appreciate. The weather was gorgeous. The fish were biting on Lewis Creek. But there was a hitch. Marvin had broken his ankle the previous week and was temporarily in a wheelchair. It was his right ankle, so he couldn’t drive down to the creek. And there, in his hands, was the Fenwick. He put it together, attached a reel and some four-weight line and set it on the couch and looked at it. Marjorie was off visiting her sister, so she couldn’t help him. But there’s a pull, an irresistible draw to a fly rod. He had to cast it. Now. It took Marvin about 20 minutes to negotiate the front steps with that wheelchair and the Fenwick. Oh, he could’ve called a friend to help him, but how could he possibly explain why? Finally, he negotiated the sidewalk and then the edge of the street itself. There were no cars coming this early afternoon. Up came the Fenwick. A few swishes in the air told Marvin he’d done the right thing in ordering the rod. So he ran out some line and began casting. About halfway across the street was a large mulberry leaf. He did a double haul on the line and sent the fly toward the leaf. It took several tries before he hit it, but when he made that cast, you could’ve sold tickets to it. His fly came to rest about three feet above the leaf and then fluttered gently down onto its target. Marvin’s smile said it all. But the damage was already done by the visiting Lady Diamondbacks, who scored three times in the top of the frame that led to a 5-0 win over the Lady Lancers. Both teams were tied for first place in the SVC at 13-1 each as they entered the conference finale. Now the Lancers—who closed out the regular season on Thursday, April 30th with a non-conference road game at Bear River—finish second place in the conference. Union Mine wins its second SVC crown in three seasons. Cordova now awaits its playoff seeding by the Sac-Joaquin Section, which is expected to release playoff brackets on its website (www.cifsjs.org) next week. But Union Mine winning pitcher Beth Hammer put the hammer on the next Lancer batter with RANCHO CORDOVA, CA (MPG) - In by Gerry Scholl Chumps or Champs, and Sometimes Both “Hey, sweetheart, at least I’m not one of those guys that lies around all weekend watching golf or chugging beers while I turn the volume up on the NASCAR madness, neglecting the ‘to-do list’ through it all. “I don’t get up early and slink out to go fishing, leaving you a note to have fun shopping alone at OSH and Home Depot, and I’ll be home for dinner. “I just like to relax in the evenings when I get home from work while watching some baseball or basketball. During football season I like to catch some of that on the weekends and Monday nights. And I’m so considerate these days --- I DVR all of it so I can skip through the commercials to cut down my hours before the tube, freeing up more time for your HGTV and Food Network shows. “And I really love it when you settle in for awhile and watch the games with me. I appreciate your level of sports knowledge and I’m sometimes surprised at the things you say (and I try not to let you see me roll my eyes at other times). And I only watch hockey when your not home or after you have gone to bed. “So tell me, honey, am I still your champ, or just a chump? Don’t answer that! At best, the answer is probably, ‘A little of both.’” You could say the same thing about most of the people all around the wide world of sports; and, then, there are some that are just champs (we think) and an awful lot more that are chumps. You don’t necessarily have to have a championship on your resume to be a “champ.” Keeping it relatively local, when you think about the cream of the crop you would likely name people such as Steph Curry, Tim Flannery, Bruce Bochy, Buster Posey, Madison Bumgarner and a number of current Giants, Ronnie Lott, Steve Young, Brent Jones, Dave Stewart, J.T. Snow, Vlade Divac, Kevin Johnson, Tara VanDerveer, Mike Montgomery, Nate Thurmond, and of course, Willie Mays and Willie McCovey. And there is the injured Hunter Pence, hanging on the railing supporting his teammates, waiting to get healthy and for his PenceFenceCatch bobble-head to go public and claiming, “I would rather die than not make that catch.” You never hear anything bad about those people, but you can still never be 100% positive about their pure “champness.” Now, what the heck is going on with the Kansas City Royals? That team was universally admired last fall for the great run they had, and for the character and drive they displayed right through to Game 7 of the World Series where they came up short against the Giants. Maybe that frustration has gotten to them, because they seem to be taking it out on everybody they play. The Royals have been having beanball wars and bench-clearing rumbles on a regular basis this season --- already squaring off with the Athletics, Angels and White Sox, prompting Cleveland pitcher Trevor Bauer to wear boxing gloves in the dugout when the Royals came to town. K.C. --- almost a champion, but not quite. But when it comes to rumbles on a regular basis, turn to the NBA Playoffs that are looking more and more like WrestleMania than basketball. All the talk is about Kevin Love’s dislocated shoulder that will likely keep him out of the rest of the playoffs for Cleveland, suffered when he tangled with Boston’s Kelly Olynyk chasing after a loose ball. Afterward, Love stated he felt Olynyk’s play was an intentional attempt to injure, which Olynyk flatly denied. Love, who hooked up with Cleveland and LeBron James in a quest for a championship after wallowing in NBA limbo in Minnesota for years, was clearly speaking out of emotion and disappointment. That play appeared a bit reckless but rather mild compared to some others and to the general tenor of the action throughout the playoffs. The NBA basketball crowd thinks things should be completely different in the playoffs and that the officials should just “let them play.” Okay, but to what extent? Instead, maybe they should clean the playoffs up a bit before somebody takes a two-forearm shiver to the chops followed by a swat to the face, or somebody catches a swiping, backhanded punch to the chin and wrecks his knee when he falls, or somebody suffers “accidental” multiple fractures to his mug, or….oh, those things already happened. Add Kendrick Perkins and J. R. Smith to the “chumps” list. Whenever you hear the announcers say, “That’s a good no-call,” you should interpret that as, “There should’ve been a call there.” It’s a good bet that the chump that got his chest bruised by a high-flying LeBron James knee when he was run over as the twotime NBA champion scored a clock-beating lay-up was not lying on the floor in pain thinking, “That was a good no-call.” There seems to be plenty of chumps around the NBA and a bunch of them are on one team, the L. A. Clippers…DeAndre Jordan, just because he couldn’t sink a free throw to save his life; Matt Barnes, with his look and attitude; Blake Griffin, who has the reputation that nobody likes him; Chris Paul, with his little flops and falls that force the refs to call fouls on the defenders on punk-like plays that have nothing to do with the spirit of the game. On the other hand, the Warriors seem to have a roster and staff full of “golden boys,” good dudes on a roll. Perhaps it would be fitting if Golden State, awaiting the start of the second round after sweeping New Orleans, was to go on to win its first championship in, like, forever. There are some cases of a kind of transformation --- from once a champ, but now a horrible chump…or much worse --- guys like Ray Rice, Adrian Peterson, Lance Armstrong, Oscar Pistorius, Aaron Hernandez and the like. Those probably had a most awful “chumpness” in them all along. The vast majority seem to have some of both qualities, to varying degrees and categories: Alex Rodriguez, Barry Bonds, Brian Wilson, Pablo Sandoval (sigh), Tiger Woods, Mark McGuire, Jose Canseco, Richard Sherman, Kobe Bryant, Urban Meyer, John Calipari, Jim Boeheim and on and on with the endless list. “So, my dearest, whatever label you might apply, or whatever you or anybody else might think of me and my relative sports addiction, it is safe to say that I am not alone.” H Cordova 9, Liberty Ranch 1 In the April 23rd road conference game in Galt, the Lancers’ Jocelyn Brown banged out three of the team’s 10 hits that included a triple and three RBIs. Stacy, Vanessa Cain, and Leila Cooper had two hits each. Cordova led 3-1 until the top of the seventh inning, when it scored its remaining runs to ground the Lady Hawks. Cordova 13, Galt 0 The Lady Lancers proved to be too much for the visiting Lady Warriors in their April 22nd game. Cordova scored in the first four innings. The game was called after the top of the fifth because of the mercy rule. Mason Pittaro clubbed a grand slam for the Lancers. She went 2-for-3 with five RBIs. Tiana Brown also had two hits. Nikki Jones, Jocelyn Brown, Kai’lee Cole, and Stacy had a hit each that added up to eight for the H game. Close Games for Cordova Baseball By Mike Bush END of the BENCH a strikeout. Cordova (1-12 in the SVC, 6-19) responded to Galt’s early lead at 6-0 with a run in the third and sixth innings. The Warriors scored four in the first inning and two in the second. The Lancers had five hits in the game. Brandon Buck went 2-for-2, while Lancer teammates Logan Appino, Jeremy Buck, and Jarrett Harris had a hit each. Cordova 9, Kennedy 6 (8 innings) Monday’s non-conference game was tied at 6-6 until the top of the eighth inning when Cordova plated three runs for the win. The Lancers led 4-0 until the bottom of the fourth inning; then Kennedy started its process to tie the game. In 5.2 innings vs. Boston, he gave up an unearned run in a 1-0 loss. In his next start, he tossed seven innings and allowed just two hits and a walk to the Blue Jays. His totals for the week were nine hits, two walks and 16 strikeouts in 12.2 innings. Adeiny Hechavarria, Miami The Marlins’ shortstop—certainly not known for his bat—owns a nine-game hitting streak and ended the week with four multi-hit games in his last five. For the week, he batted .500 with a 1.270 OPS, 10 RBIs and eight runs, helping the Marlins to a season-best five-game winning streak. In 335 games entering this season, Hechavarria had just six homers. He already has a pair in 2015. Jake Arrieta, Chicago So far in 2015, Arrieta is the Chicago Cubs’ ace, not Jon Lester, and it’s not even close. Last week, the young righthander won twice, defeating the Pirates and Reds, both on the road. In 13 innings, he walked three, yielded eight hits and whiffed 13. The season-ending injury to starting pitcher Adam Wainwright is a serious blow to the St. Louis Cardinals. As of Sunday, the Redbirds’ rotation led the majors with a 2.39 ERA, and opponents were batting just .159 with runners in scoring position against the entire staff. The Cardinals are the only team holding foes under .200...Kansas City’s bullpen is as dominant this season as in 2014, even without injured closer Greg Holland. Opponents are slugging just .194 off of Royals relievers, who own a 0.78 ERA...No player has a hit with the bases loaded this season against the Los Angeles Angels pitching staff...Even with the trade of top hitting catcher Derek Norris to the Padres over the winter, Oakland catchers lead all backstops with a .324 average and .554 slugging percentage. Although it must be noted that Norris has eight doubles and a pair of homers this season. Oakland catchers have eight extra-base hits...Detroit hitters have strode to the plate 28 times with the bases loaded this season. The major league average is 16. The Tigers’ total equals that of Washington (8), Philadelphia (8), Cleveland (7) and Milwaukee (5) combined... The New York Yankees and the Toronto Blue Jays have each swatted 10 home runs in the seventh inning or later this season. The Milwaukee Brewers, struggling to find any offense, have hit just one in the late innings... Veteran catcher A.J. Pierzynski signed with the Atlanta Braves over the winter in hopes of getting rare starts behind the plate while being used primarily as a pinch-hitter. But with Christian Bethancourt’s struggles, Pierzynski has found himself in the lineup about half the time. Both catchers had 34 at-bats at the end of the week. Pierzynski is batting .382 with a 1.138 OPS. Bethancourt is scuffling at .147/.400...During the New York Mets’ recent 11-game winning streak, the team didn’t exactly overpower with their bats. The Mets hit just .273 with only eight home runs, averaging 5.2 runs per game. However, their pitchers had a 1.091 WHIP and 2.73 ERA, giving up 3.7 runs per game. NUMBERS GAME .321 The batting average for the Detroit Tigers’ infield, led by shortstop Jose Iglesias (.379) and first baseman Miguel Cabrera (.377) (below).
