Simon’s session will cover:
• Patterns of sensory disturbance and the way in which these
symptoms can be assessed and diagnosed
• Features indicating that there is structural damage to the nervous
system
• Recognition of symptoms that merit prompt medical assessment
• Help with diagnosis of sensory symptoms in general
Su’s session will cover:
• Recent NICE guidance for diabetes and pregnancy
• Managing pre-existing diabetes throughout a pregnancy
• The rising tide of gestational diabetes

Speakers: Dr Simon Shields
Dr Shields is a consultant neurologist at Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton
and Yeovil District Hospital. He completed his first degree in zoology at
Cambridge University and qualified in medicine from Oxford University. After
medical training posts in Oxford, Glasgow, London and Cambridge he spent
three years doing research at the School of Clinical Veterinary Medicine in
Cambridge, studying repair processes in the brain and spinal cord. He then
returned to clinical training in neurology at the National Hospital for
Neurology and Neurosurgery in London and Addenbrookes Hospital in
Cambridge. He worked as a consultant neurologist in Norwich from 2004
until 2014 when he moved to take up his current consultant post in Somerset.
Su Down
Su Down is a Nurse Consultant in Diabetes and is the Clinical Lead for the
Intermediate Diabetes Community Service in Somerset. Her diabetes
nursing career began in 1989 where she set up the Diabetes Specialist
Nursing (DSN) service in South Somerset. Su took up the role of Nurse
Consultant in 2005 and has played a key role in redesigning the whole of
diabetes services across Somerset; part of her role includes the delivery of a
Pregnancy service within one of the Acute Hospital Trusts in Somerset.
Nationally she is on the board of the Forum for Injection Technique, is a
member of the Primary Care Diabetes Society committee, and is a TREND
associate member and Chair of the National Nurse Consultant group.
