I understand that: There are medical risks associated with the Procedure, including but not limited to infection, hemorrhage, allergic reaction, anesthetic drug reaction, anesthesia-induced cardiac compromise, and death. The veterinarian will not perform a comprehensive exam, other diagnostic tests, or blood-work prior to the Procedure, and that there are increased risks due to the fact that these are not being performed. There are additional risks if my pet is not current on recommended vaccines. I agree for my picture and first name to be used in publicity related to the grant that is funding the surgery. I understand that the spay surgery will terminate any pregnancy and all cats will be ear-tipped. I understand that if after care is needed I must see my regular veterinarian or emergency clinic. I consent to these procedures and agree to pay reasonable additional charges if any. I am aware that Operation S.A.F.E. is solely a spay/neuter program, not a full service veterinary clinic, and that the Procedure will be performed by an Illinois State Licensed veterinarian. If a situation arises and I cannot be reached at the phone number below, I authorize the veterinarian to use his/her discretion and clinical judgment as to how to proceed. I agree that I will be financially responsible for any and all post-operative medical treatment relating to this Procedure or any other unrelated medical problems of my animal. They may be still groggy and not fully awake when you pick them up. As they are waking up from the anesthesia, they may bob their heads, shiver, be wobbly or can even cry/vocalize. This is normal for 6-10 hours after surgery. Food/Water: Tame cats may have small amounts of food and water when they get home. Do not allow them to free feed/water until the next morning as the animal may have an upset stomach. Cats in traps will be given food. Do not open trap and give additional. If your cat is in a trap: cover the trap and keep the cat in a safe, warm area (garage, basement, heated barn) for the night. Do not let it out of the trap until the morning after surgery. If your cat is tame: keep them in the carrier until they can stand without wobbling. Once they can stand, you may move them to an enclosed area (bathroom, laundry room, basement, garage, shed ) with a litter box overnight. They can go back out the morning after surgery. Females: the interior sutures are dissolvable and there is glue on the skin layer. If the cat licks excessively the glue may come open. What you would see are not intestines! Don’t panic, but call us. If possible, keep cats calm and contained for 3-5 days and do not allow them to lick the incision site. Female cats will have a green tattoo as a further indication that they have been spayed. All cats have been given an injection of steroid and antibiotic to counter pain, swelling and infection. Do not give aspirin, ibuprofen, Tylenol or any other pain relief medication to your pet. They can be deadly. A small amount of blood seepage is acceptable immediately after surgery, as is swelling. If you notice continued drainage, discharge or swelling (bigger than a large grape) after 3 days, contact us or your regular veterinarian. It’s okay for your pet to be a bit lethargic for a couple of days after surgery. It’s not okay if your pet doesn’t urinate or defecate normally after three days. It’s not okay if your pet vomits after 24 hours. Your pet may have nausea from the anesthesia and vomit that night, but not the next day. Operation S.A.F.E. will treat at our clinic, at minimal cost if any, post-op complications resulting directly from the surgery if the above post-op instructions are followed in full. Your regular veterinarian must address illnesses or injuries that are not a direct result of surgery. If you have questions or concerns please call us. If you have an emergency you must see your regular veterinarian go to Tri-County Animal Emergency Clinic in Peoria - 309/672-1565.
