RAIDER REPORT April 27, 2015 Volume III ✦ Number 32 PRINCIPALS’ NOTES This is always an exciting time of the year; when we wrap up the fifth six weeks and begin the final phase of the current school year. For approximately 560 REL seniors this time has added meaning and significance. There will be many last time experiences over the course of these next several weeks leading up to the Class of 2015 Graduation Ceremony. It is so important for all students to FINISH STRONG , but this is even more critical for the seniors. Red Raiders Rising! RAIDER RAVES Congratulations to our Regional Golf (Cole Wilkins) and Tennis (Peyton Drain, Sam Hollis, and William Shelton) competitors on successful seasons and for being such awesome ambassadors for our school and our community. Both groups received praise from spectators and coaches for not only their competitive spirit, but also for their sportsmanship; a winning combination! Congratulations to our UIL Academic participants on their performances at the UIL 6A Region II Academic Meet held in Waco. REL had two students qualify for the UIL State Academic Meet: Emily Shackelford - 3rd in Headline Writing (state qualifier) and Caroline Frost - 5th in Feature Writing (state alternate). The REL Literary Criticism Team took 6th place overall with the following individual results: Kali Dodez (19th), Rebecca Strange (21st), Joseph Spellman (23rd), Victoria Sundin (37th). Seth Singer finished in 28th place in Spelling. Congratulations to our student-athletes who competed at the UIL 6A Area Track Meet in Garland. The following participants advanced to the UIL 6A Region II Meet to be held at Baylor University: Brittany Browning-100m (1st)/200m (1st), Mary Claire Neal-3200m (2nd)/1600m (1st), and Teyric Gibson-100m (3rd). The 2015 RELHS Senior Prom was a huge success. More than 500 students looked great and had a wonderful time at the Kiepersol Celebration Center. Thank you to the REL Student Council and sponsors Allison Rogers and Lauri Barnes for planning such a special event. Congratulations to our 2015-2016 Southern Belles members and officers. These students are amazing ambassadors for Robert E. Lee H.S. Congratulations to Mr. Berns and the Southern Accent staff for their continued awards and accolades. The school newspaper received the Award of Distinction from the Interscholastic League Press Conference. In addition, junior Savannah Gilbert received a 1st place award in the Personal Column category and junior Jamie Mills received Honorable Mention in the Sports Feature category. Congratulations to the Red Raider Baseball Team on their 7-0 victory over Garland and 10-0 victory over North Garland. The Red Raiders are 9-3 in league play with two huge games remaining to determine the District 11-6A Champion. Best wishes to our students and teachers as they make their final push toward the Algebra I, Biology, and US History End of Course (EOC) exams. These are important measures that help us monitor relative levels of instruction and student academic performance The students are prepared and will do well. Looking at the larger picture, these tests are merely small indicators of the overall education and progress of our students. The real-life evidence of growth and excellence we see from our students every day far outweigh anything that could ever be measured on a standardized test (see Raider Raves every single week).
