May is Older Americans Month
The 2015 Older Americans Month
theme is Get into the Act.
History of Older Americans Month
When Older Americans Month was
established in 1963, only 17 million
living Americans had reached their 65th
birthday. About a third of older Americans lived in poverty and there were few
programs to meet their needs. Interest in
older Americans and their concerns was
growing. A meeting in April 1963
between President John F. Kennedy and
members of the National
Council of Senior
Citizens led to designating May as “Senior
Citizens Month,” the
prelude to “Older
Americans Month.”
Historically, Older Americans Month
has been a time to acknowledge the
contributions of past and current older
persons to our country, in particular
those who defended our country. Every
President since Kennedy has issued a
formal proclamation during or before the
month of May asking that the entire
nation pays tribute in some way to older
persons in their communities.
Office Closed
The office will be closed
on Monday, May 25th
for Memorial Day.
“There is nothing wrong
with America that cannot
be cured by what is right
Bill Clinton
with America.”
Memorial Day was originally called
Decoration Day and was initiated to
honor the soldiers for the Union and
Confederate armies who died during the
American Civil War. Celebrations
honoring Civil War heroes started the
year after the war ended. The establishment of a public holiday was meant to
unify the celebration as a national day
of remembrance instead of a holiday
celebrated separately by the Union and
Confederate states. By the late 19th
century, the holiday became known as
Memorial Day and was expanded to
include the deceased veterans of all the
wars fought by American forces. In 1971,
Memorial Day became a federal holiday.
New Boilers are Coming
Villages 1, 2, 3, and 4
will be getting new
domestic hot water
and boilers systems.
This work will be done between May
and September when the heat is shut
down. Please be attentive to workers in
and around your village, parking along
the road may be limited during work
hours and water shut downs will be
necessary. Stay tuned to voice mail
messages and postings as this project
gets underway.

Bug Buzz
Stink Bugs (round shape with gray
coloring) cannot be sprayed. They are
not harmful to humans or pets. They
like the warm sun and will often be
found on a window or door especially as
the weather changes. Pick them up with
a vacuum or a tissue and toss them. Do
not squeeze them or they will “stink”.
Box Elder Bugs (long and narrow with
an orange spec on their back) can be
sprayed with a specific chemical. However, they are slow moving and are not
harmful to humans or animals. They too
like the warm sun especially as the
weather changes. Toss or vacuum them.
If you have Bed Bugs you will see their
“waste” on sheets and in the folds of your
mattress. It looks like black
mold. Bed bugs bite
humans and they spread
quickly. DO NOT SPRAY
if you think you have
bed bugs. Call the
Ridge Oak office
immediately and we will do an
inspection. Special care needs to be
taken to properly eradicate this pest.
Bees and wasps are common on our
property. They like the nooks and
crannies of buildings, vents and air
conditioning sleeves. They even build
nests in the mulch. If you see an active
hive, call the office and we will take care
of it. We usually wait until the cooler
hours of the day when the hive is not
very active to remove it.
Planting Points
3 simple things to remember:
• Fruits and/or vegetables can NEVER
be grown in pots or in hanging pots/ bags
in and around buildings.
• Do not plant perennials
in the ground. If not
properly cared for, they
interfere with lawn
maintenance or
attract animals and
we will remove
them.
• Select deer resistant annuals to plant
in pots for your patio. Snap dragons,
pansies, flowering vinca, geraniums,
petunia, new guinea impatiens and
porchulaca are just a few that the deer
will avoid.
Kentucky Derby
The 141st running of the $2 million
Kentucky Derby will be on Saturday,
May 2nd. Each year 20 horses have the
once in a lifetime chance to run in the
Kentucky Derby, the greatest two
minutes in the history of sports!
To earn a spot in
the starting gate,
they must travel
along the Road
to the Kentucky
Derby, a series of
35 designated
races at tracks across the country and
around the world. Points are awarded to
the top four finishers in each race. The
20 horses with the most points will earn
a spot in the starting gate on the first
Saturday in May.
We’re Still Sweetening
the Pot
We had such a great response to our
meal raffles in April we are going to
continue the fun in May. Julia Twomey,
Andres Jambrina and Joe Sidoti won (so
far) in April. Check out the three dates
we have selected in our May Meal notes
from Jill! You have to be in attendance
at the meal to be entered into the raffle.
Prizes are so SWEET!
Cinco de Mayo
Cinco de Mayo, or the fifth of May,
commemorates the Mexican army’s 1862
victory over France at the Battle of
Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War
(1861-1867). A relatively minor holiday
in Mexico, in the United States Cinco
de Mayo has evolved into a celebration
3
of Mexican culture and heritage,
particularly in areas with large MexicanAmerican populations. Cinco de Mayo
traditions include parades, mariachi
music performances and street festivals
in cities and towns across Mexico and
the United States.
Charter Day
Join your friends and neighbors for a
fun-filled day in downtown Basking
Ridge on Saturday, May 16th, to
celebrate our community. Enjoy food,
shopping and entertainment. Activities
are ongoing all day, followed by a family
dinner and free concert in the evening.
The celebration starts at 11 am. The
Ridge Oak staff and residents “man” a
table at the event selling raffle tickets for
the 2015 Bazaar. If the weather is good,
take a walk to town and enjoy the
people, food and music.

Once we all settle back into Felmeth
Hall we will start on our summer and fall
capital projects. Sidewalk and road
repairs will be done this season and the
final phase of boiler replacements will be
done. It will be a busy season. We have a
big property with lots of jobs that require
our attention. Additionally, we will be
doing a needs assessment survey of our
residents. When you get your survey
return it to us as soon as you can.

Seniors Speak Out About… Loneliness
Part 2
What Happens When People Are Very
Lonely? Being lonely is hard on a person’s health. Loneliness can be stressful.
People try to reduce that stress in many
different ways. Some rely on alcohol or
medications to reduce the feelings of fear
or anxiety. This in turn, leaves them
feeling even more isolated. Some seniors
become so desperate from loneliness,
they consider committing suicide.
Others feel the need to reach to just
anybody, which can sometimes lead to
problems if they choose someone who is
not good for them.
Personal Strategies for Preventing and
Reducing Loneliness Have you always
been a loner or shy? Have you forgotten
how to “do small talk”? If so, other
people probably may
not know how hard
it is for you to be
part of social
activities that
others take for
granted. Or do
6
you have a more open type of
personality? You can put it to good use.
You can make a big difference in
someone else’s life. Start with the small
things. The quickest way to make a
friend is with a smile. When you smile,
people think you are friendly and easy to
talk to. Take a second to say ”Good
morning” to someone. Reach out to
others. Recognize the other person may
feel even more awkward than you do.
Take the initiative to talk to a neighbor,
a relative, or a friend. Invite them for a
short walk; it may do you both good. Be
a friend. People who show an interest in
others and who are kind and friendly
make good friends. Developing new
relationships can make life worthwhile,
at any age.

tions from sponsor churches, local
organizations, residents and their
families in order to help Ridge Oak
residents remain independent. Care
Fund subsidizes meals, personal care,

PERSYS Units
PERSYS (Personal Emergency Response
System) is an electronic device that lets
you summon help in an emergency. The
transmitter is worn around the neck or
wrist and sends a signal to the telephone.
When emergency help is needed, the
PERSYS user presses the button and
rescue squad, police and emergency
phone numbers are called. Units are
monitored by an alarm company. Our
units are owned by Ridge Oak, and
residents are billed for monitoring.
PERSYS units have truly been “lifesavers”
for those who have had an emergency
and cannot reach the phone. Maintenance staff is responsible for installing and
testing units. If you want to sign up for
this medical alert service, call Elaine at
the office to process the paperwork.
Units will be tested on Thursday, May
21st. If you will not be home, please
leave your pendant out so it can be
tested. It is important that all units are
working properly in case of emergency.
PERSYS bills are sent out quarterly.
