As the year 2008 comes to a
close, many of us once again
begin the annual tradition of
pledging our New Year resolutions! Why not try something
completely different in 2009 by
checking out the Simply Pilates
Studio, located on Main Street in
Smithtown. Owner and primary
instructor, Tracy Hebron, is a
graduate of Temple University
with a degree in Physical
Therapy. After 15 years of owning an out-patient rehabilitation
center, Tracy was so inspired by
the benefits to her clients of the
pilates method of core strengthening, that she began to study
and complete over 600 hours of
comprehensive training from
Power Pilates in NYC, one of the
industry’s most highly regarded
training programs, to become a
Certified Pilates Instructor.
What exactly is Pilates? It is a
method of total body conditioning. Pilates strengthens, stretches
and heals the body through
movement. Movements are performed against or with the assis-
tance of resistance to challenge
the “core” of the individual. The
“core” is the center of stabilization for all body movements.
The abdominals, back and
gluteals comprise the core.
Simply Pilates offers a classic,
integrative training approach to
Pilates. Classes are deliberately
kept small in size to ensure the
proper balance is achieved for
each client. The classes incorporate both apparatus and floor
exercises.
In addition to Tracy, the studio classes are also taught by
instructor Amy Hirsch, who
holds a bachelors degree in
Exercise Science and a Masters
in Exercise Physiology. Amy has
experience working with clients
recovering from cardio-vascular
disease, diabetes, osteoporosis,
back injuries as well as pre-natal
and post-natal clients. She has
over 12 years experience in the
fitness field and is certified by
the American College of Sports
Medicine as a Health Fitness
Instructor.
Spinal articulation is a major

component of the Pilates
method. With the support of the
deep abdominals and back muscles, the spine finds increased
length, which provides much
needed space between the vertebrae for the discs. As your core
connection improves, you will
notice improved posture,
increased flexibility and strength.

Long Island Post Offices will
again serve as drop-off points
for the U.S.Marines Toys for
Tots Campaign. Toys for Tots, a
nationwide charity program
sponsored by the U.S. Marine
Corps, is aimed at making the
holidays happier days for disadvantaged children.
You can help a deserving
child by bringing a new,
unwrapped toy to the collection bin in the lobby of the
St. James Post Office by
December 19. Since 1947,
the Marine Corps Reserve

St. James Fire Department’s 28th Annual
Christmas & Holiday Parade Set for December 20
Santa Claus is coming to town
Saturday, December 20, 2008.
The St. James Fire Department
will once again play host to Santa
Claus and his friends for the 28th
annual Christmas and Holiday
Parade “The Festival of Lights.”
The parade departs from the
Green Hills Shopping Center
(opposite Hither Brook Nursery)
on North Country Road at 5 p.m.
Be sure to see all the brightly lit
and holiday decorated fire trucks
as they travel throughout the
streets of St. James in celebration
of this holiday season.
To view the decorated trucks
prior to start of parade be at the
Green Hills Shopping Center at
4:30 p.m.
The Fire Department requests
residents on side streets to keep
their cars off the road and move
them into driveways during the
parade as this route has some
very tight turns.
This year’s parade route will
cover all the major roads and
most of the side streets. You can
see the brightly lit trucks at the
following viewing spots: Sts.
Philip & James at 6 p.m.; King
Kullen at 6:05 p.m., Capital One
Bank at 6:10 p.m. Then they will
take a short break at the firehouse
sub station and return to Capital
One Bank at 6:30 p.m. and then
on to Mills Pond Elementary
School at 7 p.m. where candy
canes will be passed out and you
can take pictures with all the
characters.
Santa Claus HOT LINE for the

Chanukah Celebration Begins
December 21
With Menorah Lighting
The St. James Chamber of Commerce will be lighting
the Menorah for eight nights in celebration of Chanukah
at the triangle at Lake Avenue and Route 25A. The menorah will be lit each night beginning Sunday, December
21 through Sunday, December 28. Candles will be lit at
5 p.m. each day except on Friday when they will be lit at
4 p.m. Join your friends and neighbors on this festive holiday. Song sheets and special treats will be given out
each night, courtesy of the St. James Chamber.
The Menorah, which is put up and maintained by the
Chamber was originally donated by Laura Hirsch, who
will coordinate this year’s event.
This holiday season, the St. James Chamber asks you
to remember those less fortunate. Please bring along a
donation of canned food or non-perishable items to help
stock the shelves of a local food pantry. Also this year
donations of unwrapped toys are needed for the families
that come to the St. James R.C. Church Soup Kitchen in
East Setauket. Please bring toys to the Menorah Lighting
on Sunday, December 21. The soup kitchen serves families in need each week with wonderful hot meals.

Holiday Mailing Tips
With 19 billion cards, letters
and packages expected to be
delivered this holiday season, the
U.S. Postal Service has some tips
to help get gifts to their destination swiftly and safely. Proper
addressing and proper packaging
will help the post office to give
every gift the service it deserves.
The Postal Service offers free,
environmentally friendly Priority
Mail and Express Mail boxes and
envelopes. These supplies can be
ordered at usps.com or picked up
at the St. James Post Office. The
Postal Service also offers prepackaged shipping products,
READY POST, sold at the post
office for customers needing sturdy, secure boxes and envelopes.
Helpful packaging tips:
• Make sure packages are able
to withstand processing without the contents or packaging
breaking.
• Cushion items with bubble
wrap, newspaper, or foam
peanuts so they do not shift
during transit.
• Wrap each item separately
when packing more than one
item in the same box.
• Remove batteries from electronic devices and wrap separately.
• Close and shake the box to see
if there is enough cushioning.

The Smithtown Township
Emergency Food Pantry wants to
express our appreciation for the
articles you published this fall
about our organization. We
believe that this helped raise the
awareness of our ministry to the
community.
When the month of
November began our shelves
were looking very sparse and
our storage area was empty. Our
country is experiencing severe
economic difficulties and many
people are suffering. On a daily
basis we have seen an increase
in the number of families coming to the Pantry and we provided 44% more Thanksgiving
Baskets this year than last.
We live within the remarkable
Smithtown Township
Community and for the past
month, every day, saw individuals, businesses, schools, fraternal
organizations, scouts, town
employees, and church members bringing forth donations.
We received food, gift cards, and
monetary donations.
The week of Thanksgiving the
phone kept ringing with, “What
can I do to help, what do you
need?” There was a constant
stream of donations – turkeys,
pies, and everything else needed
for a true Thanksgiving dinner.
Our shelves are stocked and we
will be able to feed families during the coming winter months,
although we will continue to
need donations to maintain our
supplies.
We thank this wonderful and
supportive community for the
outpouring of love shown
through their donations. We are
able to provide food to anyone
in our community who is in
need because so many people
care and because they are willing to share with those less fortunate. We express our deepest
thanks to this wonderful community of caring people and appreciate that we will continue to
receive your support. We think
of you as dear friends and want
you to know that you are
included in our prayers.

National Grid Encourages Customers
to Explore Options for Heating Assistance
Applications are now being
accepted for the federally-funded
Low Income Home Energy
Assistance Program (LIHEAP) to
assist income-eligible families in
paying their energy bills, and
National Grid is reminding customers to see if they qualify.
“National Grid knows that
energy costs will be challenging
to some of our customers this
winter and through the power of
action, we are reaching out to
remind customers that LIHEAP
may be one way they can help
meet that challenge,” said Tom
King, president of National Grid
in the U.S.
LIHEAP
payments
vary
depending on household income,
household composition and heating fuel costs in relation to
income. If a household receives
public assistance, Supplemental
Security Income (SSI), or food
stamps, the household will most
likely be eligible for LIHEAP benefits. If a household is not receiving public assistance, it still may
be eligible if the gross monthly
household income is at or below
income guidelines based on
household size. In 2008, the
income level qualifications in
New York has been expanded,
allowing more individuals to
qualify.
Since LIHEAP funding is limited, customers who feel they may
qualify for the funds should contact LIHEAP immediately – applications are being accepted now
for the 2008-2009 heating season. The LIHEAP application
process varies by state.
In New York State, eligibility
for LIHEAP is determined by your
county Department of Social
Services. If you’re 59 or under
and applying for the first time,
call your county Department of
Social Services. If over 60, contact your local NYS Office for the
Aging. You can also call the
LIHEAP hotline at 1-800-3423009.
There are several other programs available to National Grid
customers to help manage energy
costs:

finally ran out of luck
November 19, 2008
when his paw slipped off
the brake pedal and the
van he was driving (without a proper license) crashed into the glass front of
a popular coffee house in St. James, to the dismay
of customers and bystanders. He was heard to
remark to the County Safety Squad, summoned in
haste by the establishment owner, that his license
was legal and correctly attached to his collar as
required by the Empire State.
While local officials are considering passing an
ordinance requiring a four-week training course for
all non-human drivers, animal rights activists are
strongly opposed to the measure, labeling it discriminating and rashly arbitrary.

Usdan Center Extends Artistic Focus With
New Fashion Design Course
Usdan Center For the Creative
and Performing Arts, America’s
premier summer arts day camp,
expands its artistic focus further
for 2009, offering a new course,
Fashion Design. Open to students
in grades 9-12, the program will
cover the basic components and
terminology relating to design,
drawing techniques, the historical and cultural background of
fashion, and an introduction to
the fashion design business. Each
student will have ample opportunity to create original designs.
The goal is to provide each student with a fashion portfolio by
the end of the course.
Usdan Center for the Creative
and Performing Arts will host several open houses for its 2009
summer season. Open Houses
will be held between 11 a.m. and
2 p.m. on Sundays, January 11
and March 15, 2009; and on
Wednesday, February 18, 2009.

families will have a chance to
tour Usdan’s 200-acre woodland
setting in Huntington, and to
obtain information and answers
to questions from the Center’s
staff.

Kids and the Holidays

The
holidays bring out
the kid in all of
us. For a little
while, even in
these challenging times, we
escape into a world of gift giving,
holiday decorating and family
gathering. Whatever holiday is
celebrated, it’s home centered,
and the sights and smells bring
cheer to a cold winter season. For
kids the holidays mean presents,
school vacation, visits from family and a general sense of fun and
anticipation. Parents and grandparents can add another dimension to kids’ perception and participation this holiday season.
Gift giving and receiving can
be turned into a great “giving
thanks” lesson by focusing on
providing the less fortunate with
outgrown clothing and toys,
games and books. Winter vacation is a great time for organizing
kids’ bedrooms – clothes, toys,
books, school work, etc. As they
give away, they make room for
more to come and zero in on
what they really need as well as
what they want. The incentive is
never greater for kids to shape up,
as they watch the family get the
rest of the house organized and
ready for company.
Past toddler ages, children can
be part of the clean-up and decoration process throughout the
house as well. Whether unpacking and putting out decorations,
helping set the holiday table,
wrapping presents, cooking or
baking with parents or grandparents – children will be making
memories and keeping family traditions that they will pass on in
the future.
Encourage children to add to
the holidays by being contributory. Sewing, drawing, making hol-

display the Chanukah menorahs
made by my sons when they
were seven and ten along with
this past Thanksgiving holiday
play given by my five and nine
year old grandchildren.
Traditions in families are handed down in many ways – orally,
through photographs or videos or
just by doing. Kids are always
curious and want to know why
something happens in their family in a certain way every year.
Take the time to share, even if
you’re overwhelmed with what
you think are more pressing
duties – or better yet, delegate
that task to an elderly member of
your family who might have more
time to spend with your child. It’s
a great way for generations to
bond, creating more shared
memories.
Most of all, try to keep the kid
in you as the pressure mounts,

If you’re building a new
home, planning to build one, or

rid of all your fresh evergreen
arrangements just yet, update
them. Start by removing any
holiday colors like red, green,
silver and gold. Buy some
fresh flowers in pretty colors
like pink, yellow, purple or
orange. Add them to the
evergreen and pines. Get
some small vases, tea cups
or other containers, cut
some flowers and greens in
small pieces to fit. Put them all

very tempting. If you have not
had a garden before it may be a
good idea to start small so that
you don’t overwhelm yourself.
Starting plants from seeds is
fun and is cheaper than buying
transplants. Your garden center
will have many seeds and seed
starting supplies to help you get
started. However, you can also
use recycled containers such as
plastic cups and plastic food
containers, even egg cartons.
Make sure to punch holes in the
bottom and keep containers in a
waterproof tray.
In addition to sterilized seed
starting potting mix, there are
compressed peat pellets. These
disks expand when dipped into
warm water.
You can buy seed starting
trays that include plastic dome
tops that create a mini-greenhouse. A complete seed starter
kit can include a seed tray base,
seed tray, potting mix, a water
reservoir and a clear cover and a
capillary mat which provides
bottom watering by wicking
water away from the reservoir.
After your seeds are planted,
cover with plastic wrap to create
a greenhouse atmosphere. Keep
them from direct sunlight until
seeds germinate. Then move to a
sunny, warm spot or put under
grow lights.
The way the prices of fresh
produce keep climbing, you may
be tempted to pull all your flowers out and devote your growing
space to just vegetables; but you
can mix it up. Flowers and vegetables do get along, and can

MONEY MATTERS:
Time to Sell… or Time to Buy?

We’re in a recession, which
could be severe. Several financial
services companies have either
collapsed or been bailed out by
the government. And the stock
market is down about 45% since
hitting its peak in October of
2007. Is this a “perfect storm”
that should blow investors out of
the market – or is it actually an
opportunity for investors to jump
back in?
If you’re an investor, your first
impulse might be to join the “get
out while you can” camp. After
all, it’s no fun seeing the market
plunge hundreds of points one
day – and then hundreds more
the next day. And we keep getting hit by waves of bad economic news. What possible reason
could there be for remaining
invested in the market, or even
adding more dollars to your current investments?
Actually, you might be surprised. Some strong historical evidence suggests that, during a
period such as we are now in,
you may indeed benefit by not
only staying invested, but also
increasing your investment dollars in the financial markets.
Consider this: In nine of the last
ten recessions, dating back to
1949, the S & P 500 had moved
up by at least 29% just 12 months
after hitting its lowest point dur-
ing the recession. Of course, as
you’ve no doubt heard, past performance is no guarantee of
future results, but it’s interesting
to note that the market eventually
recovered after each recession.
However, no one can really
predict when stocks will reach
that low point. It’s possible we’ve
already hit it, but it’s just as likely that we’ll see further drops.
And yet, even if you can’t say
that we’ve hit a market low,
should you sell your stocks to
“cut your losses” and use the proceeds to buy what you perceive
as less risky investments? Before
making this move, you need to
consider some important facts.
For example, if you pulled out of
the stock market and purchased
certificates of deposit (CDs) from
a strong financial institution, you
could reasonably expect that your
principal will be safe and that you
will receive the interest payments
promised to you. But the interest
rate you receive may not even
keep up with inflation, so, over
time, your investment could end
up costing you purchasing
power.
On the other hand, if you were
to remain invested in the stock
market, and if it does follow historical patterns, you do have a
chance of making up your losses.
Will there be continued volatility
in day-to-day price movements?
Almost certainly. But keep in
mind that, over the long term, a
portfolio that contains a reasonable amount of stocks, along with
bonds, government securities and
other investments, gives you the
best chance of achieving your
financial goals.
And here’s another reason to
keep investing: As measured by
the price-to-earnings ratio (P/E),
stocks are currently inexpensive.
If you buy more shares when
prices are down, your increased
ownership stake should become
more valuable when stocks
recover – as they have done following every bear market in the
past.
It’s tough to stay positive during a gloomy market environment. But the most successful
investors are often the ones who
have the courage to be optimistic
when everyone around them is
not.

Many people face their parents’ retirement and aging without a second thought, assuming
that Mom and Dad are in good
financial shape and ready for the
golden years. Making this
assumption can be a serious mistake. You and your folks may
think they are adequately prepared for retirement, but how far
down the road have they looked?
With average life expectancy
increasing, it’s not uncommon for
people to live 10-20 years (if not
longer) after retiring. A great deal
can happen in that time, and
life’s events don’t always work
out as planned. Culprits such as
inflation and illness can wipe out
a nest egg and undermine the
financial independence of even
the best-prepared retiree.
Inflation and Illness Can Turn a

Inflation can seriously erode
money’s purchasing power over
time. Even with an average inflation rate of 4%, retirees at age 60
with an income of $2,500/month
will have the purchasing power
of $1,388/month by the time
they’re 75 years old. In other
words, the standard of living will
be virtually halved in just 15
years. Many retirees today have
found themselves searching for

and an executor who knows

coverage, a single illness
could wipe out an otherwise
ideal retirement plan. (Some
children cost-share their parents’ premiums for Medicare
Supplement or Long-Term Care
insurance, for example. They
see it as a wise investment in
their parents’ future.)
• What about life insurance?
• Do they have special requests,
such as living wills, trusts, lifetime gifts, etc.?
• Where would they want to
live, if incapacitated? (Discuss
nursing home and home
health care options.)
Generally, parents and children feel uncomfortable discussing these matters. It’s important to do this in a way that puts
both generations at ease. One

of professionals – such as an

Estate Planning Means Planning Ahead

The issue of how to plan for
distribution of your hard earned
assets deserves your attention in
order to guarantee that your wishes will be reflected without great
expense, complications or delay.
Everybody wants to have a say in
what will happen to his or her
property upon death – who will
get it, how much of it will be
taxed and so forth. For some people, setting up an estate plan may
also include strategies, such as
setting up trusts that will reduce
the amount of taxes that have to
be paid during their lifetime or
upon their death.
Unless you have a properly
prepared, signed and witnessed
Will, New York State law will
determine the distribution of your
assets upon your death. This law
is called the law of Intestacy.
“Everybody wants to have

Many people mistakenly believe
that when a married person with
children dies without a will, the
surviving spouse gets all the property THIS IS UNTRUE. In New
York, the surviving spouse will
receive the first $50,000.00 of
the estate, plus one-half of the
residue, with the balance divided
equally between the surviving
children. If any child is under 18
years of age at the time of the parent’s death, such child’s inheritance will be placed in a trust
fund. Even if the surviving spouse
is appointed trustee by the Court,
prior approval of the Court will
be necessary to pay for expenses
such as the child’s education,
clothing or living costs. An annu-
al accounting of income and
expenses will be required.
Having a properly prepared Last
Will and Testament will prevent
this potential nightmare.
Another very important reason
to have a will prepared is so that
the parents can select a guardian
for their minor children in the
event of the death of both parents. Without a will, the Court
determines who will raise your
children.
For those whose Estates exceed
the Federal Estate Tax Exemption
(remember Life Insurance benefits
are included in the total), it is
important to consider minimizing
estate and gift taxes. A marital
deduction trust can be set up by
your attorney, which will double
the amount that is free from federal estate taxes.

Three additional documents
are also essential to the planning
process. They are the Living Will,
Health Care Proxy, and Durable
Power of Attorney.
The Living Will enables you to
provide instructions as to the use
of life-sustaining treatment in the
event you are terminally ill or suffering from an illness or injury
with no chance of recovery.
A Health Care Proxy enables
the person of your choice to
make any and all health care
decisions for you in the event you
are incapable of making them
yourself. The proxy can provide
for specific instructions as to any
and all medical treatment.
These documents can save
your family unnecessary grief and
anguish in the event you become
permanently unconscious with
no expectation of recovery. In
essence, these documents can aid
your family in convincing a doctor or hospital to end life support.
The alternative is to apply to the
Court to direct the doctor or hospital to withhold treatment. This
is obviously a costly, time consuming and painful alternative.
A Durable Power of Attorney
permits the person of your choice
to act on your behalf regarding
financial decision making. This
will avoid the need for Court
intervention in order to access
your bank accounts and/or pay
bills in the event you are unable
to do so.
It may also be a crucial tool to
enable a person in need of nursing home care to qualify for
Medicaid – thus saving thousands
of dollars in health care costs.

The Importance of a Health Care Proxy

By executing a Health Care
Proxy you appoint an agent to
make health care decisions for
you if you become unable to
make those decisions for yourself.
As a general rule a physician
should not perform an invasive
procedure upon his or her patient
without the patient’s informed
consent.
If you have not executed a
Health Care Proxy and if you
become unable to make health
care decisions for yourself, your
physician will be faced with a difficult decision. He or she knows
the procedure or procedures that
should be performed, but he or
she does not have your consent.
Often the physician can consult
with family members and present
the question to a hospital committee for advice, but neither are
legally effective and the advice
from the committee cannot be
obtained quickly.
Accordingly, if a physician
proceeds without the patient’s
consent without the benefit of a
Health Care Proxy he or she risks
a lawsuit for treating a patient
without the patient’s consent.
You avoid this problem if you
execute a Health Care Proxy. If
you cannot make health care
decisions for yourself, the person
you appoint as your health care
agent on the Health Care Proxy
can make health care decisions
for you and the physician can
proceed with the appropriate procedures as if you had consented
to said procedures yourself.
The form is available on-line
and at stationery stores, hospitals
and attorneys’ offices. The Health
Care Proxy form is simple to complete and needs two (2) witnesses. The Health Care Proxy does
not need to be
signed before a
notary public.
It would be
prudent to execute the Health
Care
Proxy
with the assistance of persons familiar
with the form
such as an attorney, a notary public, a physician or other health
care provider.

I joined Energy in March of 2008. The gym I had belonged to closed. I was
part of a close knit group of women at that gym and did not expect to find the
same atmosphere at Energy Fitness. I reluctantly joined because I knew that,
due to health issues, I needed to continue my exercise routine. The staff at
Energy was welcoming, warm and extremely helpful. Soon I began taking classes that I never thought I would be able to handle. The instructors and personal
trainers are very knowledgeable and in tune with their clients’ needs. Each one
is unique in the way they teach; there is something for everyone at Energy
Fitness. I am part of the Monday nutrition class,“getting it on in the kitchen
with Katie”. I have diabetes and food allergies so I need to be knowledgeable
about diet and nutrition. This class is helping me stay focused and introducing
me to some great recipe ideas. I have begun to push myself harder and I am
seeing results. Not only is my diabetes in control but I have gone down 2 pant
sizes. I never imagined that I could be able to do a spin class, kick box or even
run more than a mile. This October I was able to complete the Avon 39 mile
Breast Cancer walk. I have made many new friends at Energy and I was happy
to see many of my old friends at Energy as well. I love being part of the Energy
family.

Smithtown Stampede – 2-Time NJBL Champs Go Undefeated
The Smithtown Stampede, a 9
year old traveling baseball team,
concentrating on competing,
started to give serious thought to
a second 9-year-old division
championship after about the
ninth game of the recently concluded Fall travel baseball season. Now having a second title
and an undefeated season within
reach, the final 4 or 5 games saw
opponents turn it up a notch in an
effort to spoil the Stampede perfect record. Each and every game
featured Stampede players rising
to the occasion, right down to the
last two victories that secured
perfection. The final two games
were tough shutout wins. During
both games, no errors were committed, and only four hits were
allowed. The box scores only told
part of the story at season’s end.

paved the way to 14 & 0.
With the best record in town,
and now 21 straight victories, the
Fall campaign featured wins versus previous champions and playoff teams. Stampede pitching registered 4 shut outs, 2 complete
games, 2 no-hitters, and being
backed by the league’s best
defense, allowed only 23 runs all

D.D. Palmer developed the
theory of chiropractic care at the
end of the 19th century. The
Palmer School and Cure was
founded in 1897, which later
became the Palmer School of
Chiropractic. But Palmer cannot
be credited with inventing chiropractic care, it dates back to
writings from 2700 BC and 1500
BC in China and Greece, respectively.
Today chiropractors are
licensed doctors of chiropractic
(designated with the abbreviation
of DC) in 50 states and are graduates of accredited chiropractic
colleges.
Chiropractic and medical
school curricula are similar; like
medical students, chiropractic
students must complete a residency program and be tested,
licensed, and monitored by state
and national peer-review boards.
How Does It Work?
Chiropractors are the only
professionals trained to diagnose
and treat spinal subluxations –
vertebrae that have moved out of
position. A subluxation can
result from an injury or trauma
or from everyday activities, like
poor posture or sleeping in an
awkward position. Over time the
misaligned vertebrae create pressure on the spine that can cause
an imbalance in the body and
affect the nerves.
When To Use
Chiropractic care generally
falls into three categories: relief,
correction, and maintenance.

Fad Diets Might Do More Harm Than Good
Though a new one seemingly
arrives each year boasting the
potential for bigger and better
results, fad diets might actually
do more harm than good.
According to the United States
Food and Drug Administration
(FDA), fad diets often overemphasize one particular food or type of
food, contradicting the longstanding medical emphasis on the
health benefits of a balanced diet.
Whereas a balanced diet recommends eating a variety of foods
from the Food Guide Pyramid,
fad diets often place too great an
emphasis on one specific group
while minimizing if not completely ignoring the rest of the
food groups. While fad diets
might show instant results, the
FDA notes that longterm positive
results, such as keeping weight
off, are not common. In addition,
certain fad diets might promote
weight loss, but result in other,
less noticeable side effects. For
example, a high-protein diet
could also be high in fat. A diet
high in fat could increase choles-
terol levels in the blood, therebyincreasing a person’s risk for heart
disease and certain cancers. The
FDA also notes that no evidence
exists to suggest that high-protein
diets are effective in helping people maintain initial weight loss.
So while fad diets might provide
instant results, their effectiveness
in the longterm is unproven, and
dieters could be putting themselves in a worse position than
they’re already in.

CVN 65, based in Norfolk, but she expects to be
leaving soon for duty in Afghanistan. As a public
Affairs Officer, her duties have taken her many
places, including the West and Central African
Partnership Station, focusing on maritime safety and
security training with the African navy.

Ralph S. Croskey, Jr., of Ronkonkoma, NY and
Boca Raton, FL, died peacefully on October 24, 2008
in Florida at the age of 87. He was born on March
24, 1921 in Philadelphia, PA to Lucile Stothart and
Ralph S. Croskey whom predeceased him. Ralph
grew up in PA, graduated from Haverford School in
1939 then continued his education at Cornell
University, graduating in 1943. He was an officer in
the U.S. Air Force during WWII serving from 19431946. He received his law degree from the University
of Pennsylvania in 1948. A published author in 2004
and long-time manager of Mutual of NY in
Manhattan.
Beloved husband of the late Elizabeth. Devoted
father of Ralph III, Christine, Stephen, Rebecca and
Julie. Devoted step-father of Cindy, George and Kim.

Thomas W. Christy, formerly of Smithtown and
Hanover Township, passed away on November 24,
2008 at the age of 82 at the VNA Hospice of St.
Luke’s, Lower Saucon Township. He and his wife
Gertrude E. (McCormack) Christy celebrated their
59th anniversary in August.
Born in the Bronx, NY, he was the son of the late
Thomas W. and Helen (O’Donnell) Christy. He was a
1944 graduate of Valley Stream High School, and a
1950 graduate of St. John’s University. Thomas
served with the US Army Air Corp during World War
II. He worked for Shell Oil in Brooklyn retiring as
Plant Manager in 1987 after 35 years of service. He
was a volunteer teacher for Project Business in
Brooklyn. Thomas was a member of Notre Dame
Catholic Church of Bethlehem, where he served as a
Eucharistic Minister; and after retiring, he volunteered as finance/business manager at the Church for
17 years. Thomas was a volunteer or the YMCA of
Greater New York in Manhattan, where he was a
three-time recipient of the “Man of the Year” award.
He is survived by his wife, sons, Thomas J. and his
wife, Linda of St. James, NY; James (Barbara) of
Bloomsburg; Joseph J. (Mariann) of Ann Arbor, MI;
Jerry (Janet) of Gilbertsville; Daniel P. (Lisa) of Bath;
daughter, Mary Christy of Bath with whom he

Remembering a Loved One Over the Holidays

It’s the time of year for festive
family get-togethers, stockings
hung by the fire, twinkling tree
lights and the spreading of holiday cheer. However, you probably aren’t feeling very cheerful if
you’re missing a passed love
one. Because the holidays are a
time when loved ones gather,
this season can be particularly
difficult for those who have lost
a dear friend or family member
– whether they died recently or
many years ago.
Fortunately, there are countless ways to remember a loved
one over the holidays. Even the
simplest rituals could help you
through this trying time – from
lighting a candle in their memory to visiting a special holiday
memorial service. Not only will
these activities help you through
your grief, but they may also
offer you a sense of peace. With
a little effort, you may find yourself slipping into the holiday
spirit after all.
Here are 12 meaningful ways
to remember your loved one this
holiday season:
1. Write a private holiday letter
to your loved one. This will
help you express your feelings and get some things off
your chest.
2. Visit a special holiday
memorial service at your
local church or funeral
home. You may have an
opportunity to light a candle
or hang an ornament on a
tree in honor of your loved
one.
3. Listen to some of your loved
one’s favorite music –
whether it’s holiday tunes,

comfortable mourning privately
in their home.
Above all else, remember that
it’s okay to be emotional this
time of year. Allow yourself to
feel grief, sadness, loneliness or
even anger. Just because it’s the
holidays, you shouldn’t be
forced to bottle up your feelings.
On the same token, you shouldn’t feel guilty for experiencing
happiness or joy during the holidays. This is not a sign of disrespect to your passed love one –
it’s just a sign that you’re ready
to keep on living.
