Sandborg, Director Deep in our hearts, a flame is softly burning. Deep in our thoughts, the mem’ries are returning. Bells that are ringing, choirs that are singing, Bring back the joys that we have known. Learning to live, and loving as we’re learning. Seeking to find the truths for which we’re yearning. Years come and go, but we’ll always know That dear old Roanoke served us well. To live once more, here in these hallowed halls. To know once again all the joys that we used to know! Some day the winter of life will pass before us. Then we’ll remember the place that proudly bore us. Then we’ll remember Alma Mater. Then we’ll remember Thee. THE BENEDICTION The Rev. Christopher M. Chance ’15; Ms. Evelyn A. Clark ‘15 HONORARY DEGREE RECIPIENT Doctor of Humane Letters Nancy Howell Agee Nancy Howell Agee is the president and chief executive officer of Carilion Clinic, the Roanokebased regional not-for-profit health care organization that serves 18 counties and six cities in western Virginia and southern West Virginia. In her role, she oversees a multi-specialty physician group of 1,000 physicians, seven hospitals and multiple complementary business lines, along with the Jefferson College of Health Sciences. Carilion has a partnership with Virginia Tech in the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine and Research Institute, where Ms. Agee is on the Board of Directors. Ms. Agee is a native of the Roanoke Valley and was born in Roanoke Memorial Hospital, in which her executive office is now situated. She says that when she was five years old, she already knew that she wanted to be a nurse. She began her service at Carilion as a young “candy striper” volunteer. She holds a bachelor’s degree in nursing (with honors) from the University of Virginia and a Master of Science in Nursing (with honors) from Emory University. She also studied at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. Ms. Agee began her nursing career as a staff nurse at Roanoke Memorial Hospital and has served in various management roles. In her former position as Carilion’s executive vice-president and chief operating officer, Ms. Agee was at the forefront of the successful initiative to reorganize Carilion into a patient-centered, physician-led clinic. She sees the future as being one where more health care is delivered outside of the hospital and works to establish the necessary network of physicians to meet patient needs. Those with whom she has served describe Ms. Agee as thoughtful and efficient. She has a soft side, but according to her, she also has a “rock-solid core of values I won’t deviate from.” She considers herself a “servant-leader” and makes regular visits to Carilion departments to see personally how the goals of quality service and patient safety are being met. Ms. Agee serves on the Board of Directors and Board of Governors for Carilion Clinic. She is an American Hospital Association Board of Trustees member and she chairs the Virginia Center for Health Innovation. Her contributions to the quality of life in Virginia extend well beyond Carilion’s walls. She has served or is currently serving on numerous Boards of Directors, including the Foundation for Roanoke Valley, of which she was chairwoman; Mill Mountain Theatre; the Taubman Museum of Art; the Virginia Business Council; Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges; the Virginia Higher Education Council; and HomeTown Bank. Ms. Agee is a member of the Roanoke College Community Advisory Group and has been a Roanoke College Associate member for over 12 years. In addition to serving her community, Ms. Agee is devoted to her family. Her husband, Judge Steven Agee, is a judge for the Fourth Circuit of the U. S. Court of Appeals. Her son, Zach, will graduate from Washington & Lee University School of Law this month. HONORARY DEGREE RECIPIENT Doctor of Fine Arts Makoto Fujimura Makoto Fujimura is an internationally known artist, writer, speaker and arts advocate. His paintings have been exhibited in galleries in Tokyo, Hong Kong, Vienna, New York, and numerous other cities around the world. He is a popular lecturer at conferences, universities and museums. He has painted live on stage at New York’s famed Carnegie Hall and shared his work at Roanoke’s own Olin Hall. Mr. Fujimura was born in Boston, Massachusetts, and earned his bachelor’s degree at Bucknell University, with a double major in Animal Behavior and Art and a minor in Creative Writing. He received his Master of Fine Arts at Tokyo National University, where he was a National Cultural Affairs Scholar. He continued his art education in the Doctoral Level Program at Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music. As the first non-Japanese citizen to be accepted into the program, he studied the traditional Japanese painting style of Nihonga, which utilizes precious ground minerals as its medium. The Dillon Gallery in New York has described him as one of the technique’s “most powerful and popular artists.” Mr. Fujimura lived for many years in Manhattan, both before and after the attack on the World Trade Center, and the events surrounding September 11, 2001, profoundly influenced his thinking about art and culture. He currently lives and works near Princeton, New Jersey. Mr. Fujimura has been a presidential appointee to the National Council on the Arts, a member of a cultural delegation to China with the Presidential Commission on the Arts and Humanities, and the recipient of the American Academy of Religion’s “2014 Religion and the Arts” award. This award honors an individual who has made “a significant contribution to the understanding of the relations among the arts and the religions, both for the academy and for a broader public.” Mr. Fujimura is the founder of the International Arts Movement, a non-profit that aims to restore wholeness to our divisive culture by nurturing collaborative efforts among artists, academics, and professionals. He also is the founder of the related Fujimura Institute, which develops projects and events that enable such collaborations. Mr. Fujimura has a passion for “generative thinking” that promotes creativity, generosity, and a vision for the future. In 2014, the College was privileged to host the Fujimura Institute’s “QU4RTETS” program, a series of music, art and lecture events inspired by T.S. Eliot’s masterwork, “Four Quartets.” This included exhibitions of paintings by Mr. Fujimura and collaborating artist Bruce Herman, as well as a Kandinsky Trio concert performance of a QU4RTET composition by Christopher Theofanidis and readings from Eliot’s poems. Mr. Fujimura and his wife, Judith, are the parents to three children. Their daughter, Lydia, is a member of Roanoke’s Class of 2015. Mr. Fujimura’s many writings include “Refractions: a journey of art, faith, and culture” and “Culture Care.” A man of deep faith, Mr. Fujimura is a significant voice in the conversation about art and faith, and he discussed this topic last year during his campus lecture, “Art as a Christian Vocation.” Degrees Conferred in Course Degrees with distinction: cum laude (minimum 3.4 gpa); magna cum laude (minimum 3.7 gpa); summa cum laude (minimum 3.9 gpa) VALEDICTORIAN Ann Jordan Shreckhise, Grottoes, Virginia SALUTATORIAN Alexander Paul Berryman, Moyock, North Carolina BACHELOR OF ARTS Matthew Alan Anderson, cum laude Criminal Justice Nicholas C. Young In honor of … Diane and Michael Young Reem Zeidan ACADEMIC REGALIA Ceremonial robes worn in the academic procession during Commencement exercises convey the breadth and intricate structure of the academic world. Colors of diverse institutions and academic fields stand in high relief against the basic black of the caps and gowns. By its color(s), the lining of the hood represents the college or university that is conferring the degree. Note the royal blue and gold of Roanoke College. Gowns themselves are different shapes for bachelor's, master's and doctorate degrees. The typical American cap is flat with a tassel draped over its front edge. Some colleges and universities in the United States and abroad use caps that are softly peaked or round and stiff. In addition to traditional regalia, you will see some students at Roanoke’s Commencement ceremony wearing honor cords and graduation stoles. Honor cords consist of colorful twisted cords with tassels on the ends. The cords signify academic achievement or membership in a recognized academic honor group or society. For graduates earning Latin honors, you will see specific solid-color honor cords: gold for summa cum laude, silver for magna cum laude, and white for cum laude. Graduation stoles are decorative vestments worn by members of a college organization. The stoles recognize membership or participation. The cord and stole color and design are specific to a recognized academic honor or group. Hoods also differ in shape for each of the traditional degrees. The edge of the hood and the chevrons and piping of the gown mark the field of study, according to the following scheme: Agriculture – Maize Arts, Letters, Humanities – White Commerce, Business – Drab and Sapphire Blue Economics – Copper Education – Light Blue Engineering – Orange Fine Arts, Architecture – Brown Journalism – Crimson Law – Purple Library Science – Lemon Medicine – Green Music – Pink Oratory – Silver Gray Philosophy – Dark Blue Physical Education – Sage Green Public Administration – Peacock Blue Science – Golden Yellow Social Work – Citron Theology – Scarlet The Roanoke College Mace The Roanoke mace was presented to the College in 1996 by the four daughters of Hartselle DeBurney Kinsey ’21. The mace is dedicated to Mr. Kinsey, who was devoted to Roanoke College as a student, teacher, advocate and trustee. Maces date back to the Middle Ages, when they were used as weapons. Today, they are primarily symbols of academic authority used at formal convocations and commencement ceremonies. Roanoke College’s mace was designed by Susannah Wagner, a British-trained goldsmith and jeweler in Ashland, Virginia. Also involved in its making were a jeweler, engraver, stonecutter, glassblower and wood crafter. The mace features a sterling silver headpiece, which is adorned with garnets and engraved symbols representing subjects cherished by Mr. Kinsey, an American walnut baluster (or wooden stem) and a medallion engraved with a replica of the College seal on one side and the symbol of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America on the reverse. A maroon hand-blown glass globe honoring the College colors rests inside the sterling silver cage of the headpiece. The cage features architectural elements from Miller Hall and rests on a base that includes a fleur-de-lis pattern found in wrought ironwork around campus. The Roanoke College Seal The seal of the College was redesigned by Guy A. Ritter, Jr., Associate Professor of Philosophy and Religion Emeritus. It was approved by the Board of Trustees in April of 1964. It features a shield in national blue emblazoned with a mandarin yellow cross, representing Roanoke College’s relationship with the Lutheran Church. The cross symbolizes the Christian values inherent in our culture, and above it is the lamp of knowledge. The white dogwood flower on the shield symbolizes the Commonwealth of Virginia. The motto, “PALMAM QUI MERUIT FERAT,” means “Let him who earns the palm wear it.” The palm is symbolic of the palm leaf that was given in honor of excellence in ancient Greece.
