May “Mei” 2015
Roselani Scene
Aloha from our General Manager
The Jacaranda Trees are in bloom upcountry. I hope
you will go see them. Their purple color and their
short blooming season reminds me of lilacs, which
remind me of my mother.

When I went into Kindergarten, my mother went
back to work. I have different memories of her before and after she
returned to work. I remember her wearing aprons, canning fruit and
pickles and hanging laundry on the clothesline. The clothesline was at
the back of the yard by a long hedge of lilac shrubs and in the spring
our house would be filled with big vases of lilacs. I loved running
back and forth between the damp white sheets on a sunny morning.
My mother did the laundry using a wringer washer. It was a big grey
cast iron beast on spindly legs with wheels that hooked up to the sink
with hoses, and was kept on the back porch when it wasn’t laundry
day. I was fascinated with this contraption and I delighted in putting
various non-laundry things through the wringer. I’m sure that’s what I
was doing when it fell over on top of me. I don’t remember the pain,
but I do remember the scream my mother made when she found me! It
was soon after that she went back to work. When she got her first
paycheck the first thing she bought was a brand new Automatic
Washer/Dryer. She also stopped wearing aprons and canning fruit and
vegetables and she started wearing fancy clothes and dressed like she
was going to church every day. On Mother’s day I would give her a
bottle of her favorite perfume, Chanel No. 5, purchased with my own
allowance money, under the supervision of my sisters. Now, when I
think about my mother, I think about the before-she-went-to-work
smell of fresh sheets and lilacs and the going-to-work smell of Chanel
No. 5.
I imagine that there are former Hawaiian
residents that live where there are lilacs and
when they bloom in the spring it reminds them
of the Jacaranda trees and hopefully they will
call their mothers on Sunday May 10th to wish
them a Happy Mother’s day.
With Aloha,
Steve Hansen, General Manager

Memorial Day
May Day is Lei Day
Traditionally, Lei day is May first. The first Lei Day was started in Honolulu
on the island of Oahu by Don Blanding in 1927. He created the idea to
establish a unique Hawaiian holiday. Lei Day became an official holiday in
1929 and is continued today, with lei-making competitions, concerts, hula
performances, and the giving and receiving of lei among family and friends.
The lei is a symbol of aloha – a way to show others that you care about them. A lei is a wreath of flowers,
leaves, etc. that are worn around the neck or head. The proper way to wear lei is gently draped over the
shoulders, hanging down both in front and in back. It is considered rude to remove a lei from your neck in
the presence of the person who gave it to you, so if you must, be discrete.
