With the construction of the famous Erasmusbrug in 1996 the South got connected to the centre of the city. From that moment, especially Kop van Zuid, grew spectacularly, it’s skyline is best seen while crossing the Erasmusbrug by foot or bike. Architectural masterpieces by the big names like OMA, Renzo Piano and Mecanoo can be admired here on the ‘peninsula’ (Kop van Zuid). Cross the water again via the Rijnhavenbrug to enjoy some of the culinary hotspots in South. For a lovely and quiet stroll in the big and bustling city one can visit the Noordereiland where the quays offer an impressive view on the city and the old railway bridge ‘De Hef’. Make a walk from the central station alongside the Westersingel, also called ‘the cultural axis’, towards the Museumpark where the most prominent museums of the city are located (Dijkzigt) and visit Witte de With quarter for more cultural spots. Here, you can also find Rotterdams nightlife in the nocturnal hours. Walk further southward towards the Maas to relax in Het Park or wander through the chic and stately buildings in the Scheepsvaartkwartier (Nieuwe Werk). The eastside of the centre of Rotterdam is perfect for the shoppers. Acoording to many, these buildings from the 20s and 30s make North one of the most beautiful and refined parts of the city. Originally built as a residential area this neighbourhood is still a popular place to live. However the North is worth the visit for outsiders too. Head to the Proveniersingel for a stroll, and continue to Rotterdams ‘Highline’ on the Raampoortstraat. Thanks to redevelopment of the old railway viaduct ‘De Hofbogen’, which is running through the entire northern district, this is one of the upcoming places in town. The characteristic arches of the viaduct houses shops, lunchrooms and restaurants. More western in North you have the so-called ‘Noorderboulevard’, from the Zwart Janstraat until the Zwaanhals, where you can find all the beautiful and fun goodies you need in one of the many shops (Oude Noorden). The oldest part is historical Delfshaven, which arose in the 16th century as a rich harbour town when gorgeous, historical and still existing buildings and warehouses were built on the Voorhaven. Once you cross the Schie you’ll enter the Heemraadssingel surrounded by wonderful houses, this park is the perfect hideout on a summer day. On the Nieuwe Binnenweg is an array of exemplary stores, whether you just want to shop or you’re looking for a bite at a good deli (Nieuwe Westen and Middelland). In the northern parts of these two neighbourhoods a motley collection of cultures comes together, which can be seen in the many eateries, supermarkets and specialty stores. Spangen is located in the west with a couple of special spots for a drink, coffee, lunch or dinner. Maybe you’ve heard that the New York Times wrote about Rotterdam as one of the trendiest cities in the world. Maybe you’ve seen pictures of the rising skyline with architectural masterpieces alongside the Maas. Or did someone tell you about the energetic multicultural atmosphere?
