WELCOME TO VITALITY RUN
HACKNEY HALF MARATHON 2015
On behalf of Vitality, I’d like to welcome you to
one of our eight Vitality Run Series events. As
sponsors we’re proud to be involved in a sport
that brings together people of all ages and
abilities, whether raising money for a good
cause or simply for the personal challenge of
completing the course.
This series of events aligns perfectly with our
core purpose which is to help people get healthier
and to enhance and protect their lives. Vitality
does this by promoting the benefits of leading
a healthy and active lifestyle, incentivising and
rewarding those that do so. We call this sharedvalue - which means we help our members,
which in turn supports our business and means
together we can make a positive impact on the
health of our nation.

HACKNEY WELCOMES YOU!
Welcome to the second Vitality Run Hackney
Half Marathon. We’re delighted to again be
working in partnership with GO2 to celebrate
our borough and encourage local people to take
part in physical activity, whatever their ability.
We’re crossing our fingers for some great
running conditions so that you can enjoy
everything this fantastic route has to offer.
Last year’s run was held later in the year and
as any returning runners will know, the heat
was intense, so we’re hoping that by having
the event earlier in the year and changing the
course slightly, we’ll make it an even more
enjoyable event.
A WEEKEND OF RUNNING
Race day is just one element of Vitality Run
Hackney; the weekend kicks off on Saturday
9th May, with 2,000 local people taking part in
a free 5K run around Hackney Marshes, while
over 1,000 primary school pupils have been
taking part in the Schools’ Challenge, which
sees them run a mile a week to complete 12
miles before race day. On race day they’ll be
completing their final 1.1 mile run on the finish
straight at the Marshes, so if you see any of our
junior runners, be sure to give them a cheer.
On behalf of everyone at Hackney Council, I’d
like to wish you all the best of luck - I’ll see you
on the starting line!
CARNIVAL LIKE ATMOSPHERE
One of the best things about the first Vitality
Run Hackney was seeing the whole community
throw themselves into the event; there was a
carnival-like atmosphere across the entire
borough, as residents lined the streets to cheer
on the runners.
As a local resident and councillor, I was
proud to run past some of Hackney’s iconic
landmarks and people are still telling me how
much they enjoyed having a half marathon on
their doorstep.

There’ll be thousands of runners and spectators making their way to
the Race Village at the same time, so it’s a good idea to allow plenty of
time to get to the start.
*Roads along the route will be reopened as runners complete each
section, and when it is safe and feasible to do so. Runners predicted
to finish after the cut off time, of 3 ½ hours, will be asked to move
onto the pavement if they wish to continue.

and its many green spaces as well as the iconic Queen Elizabeth
Olympic Park.
MILES

9
Vitality Run Hackney | 10th May 2015
The race starts at the southern end of Hackney Marshes and heads
west along Homerton High Street, onto Lower Clapton Road and around
Hackney Downs before making its way into Hackney Central and past
the famous Hackney Empire.
5–7
The route then continues west along Graham Road and along
Queensbridge Road into Haggerston, running past Stonebridge
Gardens before heading east past Haggerston Park and the buzzy
Broadway Market and on past London Fields.
7–9
Now over halfway, the run heads east along Victoria Park Road, running
alongside the fantastic green spaces of Victoria Park and Well Street
Common. The route then swings around the north east corner of
the park and heads down Cadogan Terrace, dipping into the London
Borough of Tower Hamlets.
9–12
Runners will then head underneath the A12 and towards Hackney Wick,

11:00am and 11.30am.
FOOD & DRINK STALLS
A number of stalls selling refreshments will
be available to keep your energy levels up
while your friends and family are running.
PLAY BUS AND BOUNCY CASTLE
The Hackney Play Bus will be coming to
the race village this year - a fun packed
bus that will be offering young children the
opportunity to have fun, be creative and play
safely whilst being cared for by qualified
staff. There will also be a bouncy castle to
entertain numerous little people throughout the duration of the event. Both are free
of charge.
ENTERTAINMENT
Positioned along the route and in the race
village will be some fantastic live East End
entertainment to energise the runners and
keep spirits high for all involved.
Vitality Run Hackney | 10th May 2015
MASSAGE
While the runners are out on course, why
not treat yourself to a massage (available
between 9:00am-10:00am in the Race
Village). This is a paid service provided by FIX,
£10 for 10 minutes & £20 for 20 minutes.
INFORMATION POINTS
We have roaming information points; look
out for the Marshals in the Race Village
wearing bright green t-shirts. They are able
to help you with any questions and provide
directions.
SPECTATOR POINTS
Hackney Marshes is the best place to get a
good view of the start of the race, and the
finishing straight when the runners return.
There’s also plenty of room in the green
spaces that feature alongside the route:
• Hackney Downs/Downs
Park Road (Water Station 1)
• Mare Street (Water Station 2)
• Broadway Market (Water Station 3)
• Well Street Common (Energy Drink Station)
• Hackney Wick (Water Station 4)
• Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park
(Water Station 5)
MEETING POINTS
There will be coloured flags (orange, blue
and green) indicating 3 different meeting
points within the race village. It will be
particularly busy after the race so it’s a good
idea to have a meeting point planned.

why it has so much to shout about. There’s
the hipster café culture, plenty of green
spaces and tons of activities going on!

PREP FOR RACE DAY
Q
We each have our own motivation to run, whether it is beating your last PB, getting fit, losing
some weight, or simply the escape you find when running. It all requires an inner drive and
determination. Here are 10 tips to help you prepare for race day:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
29
In the lead up to race day it’s easy for
your mind to play tricks on you – trust in
the training plan you are working to and
resist the urge to over train.
6.
Make sure you know your kit – don’t try
anything new on the day of the race.
7.
Try to increase the amount of good
quality carbohydrates you eat – they
should make up 60-70% of your daily
calorie intake.
On the morning of the race allow plenty
of time to get to the start! And plan to
be at the Race Village at least an hour
before the race starts.
8.
On race day, stick to your normal
running pace – it’s easy to get caught up
with other runners.
Taper your training, in the days leading
up to the race, cut training volume by 5060% and divide what is left between high 9.
intensity work and recovery.
Drink water little and often the week
before the race, but start the race well
hydrated.
The night before make sure you have:
race number, safety pins, a drink and
snack, change of clothes packed and
you’re ready to go.
PICK UP A RUN
HACKNEY HOODIE
We have a range of high quality clothing to
purchase online at runhackney.com and
available on race day in the Race Village.
Why not buy a hoodie or a t-shirt as a fabulous
reminder of your race day achievement!
Don’t be afraid to harness the support of
the crowd – a timely cheer may be just
what you need.
10. When you finish, keep walking, put extra
layers of clothes on and eat and drink
something as soon as you can. Finally,
enjoy the sense of satisfaction that
comes with completing a half marathon!

RUNNING FUEL AND HYDRATION
Sharing his Top Tips for staying hydrated and fuelled on race day is Martin Yelling. Martin is an
experienced coach, working with people of all abilities and aspirations - from first time finishers,
PB hunters to aspiring champions! He studied Sports Science and has a PhD in physical activity
participation. A former international runner, Martin is also a national champion duathlete and
Ironman triathlete, so you’re in safe hands!
The Screen @ Southern Terrace – Westfield London
The Two Towers East – Tower Hamlets
Here are Martin’s Top 10 Hydration & Fuelling Tips:
1.Eat a light breakfast: cereal, porridge,
a bagel, banana or toast - 2 hours or
so before the event; this will kick start
your metabolism and supply your body
with energy.
2.Stick to what you know, don’t change
your eating habits on race morning.
3.If it’s particularly warm, take a small
bottle of water with you to sip prior to
the start of the race.
Holland Park Roundabout – Hammersmith & Fulham
Ocean is a boutique media company specialising
in iconic digital screen advertising. We work with
London Boroughs to provide advertising revenues
that help to deliver public services.
4.Thirst is a really good indicator of
hydration - if you are thirsty, then drink!
9. Finish the race at a steady pace
and go for a gentle ‘warm down’ jog
after you have recovered, this should
reduce stiffness in the days after the
race.
5.Adapt your goals to the temperature
of race day. If it’s hot or humid, take it
easy and drink to thirst.
10.Don’t gulp large volumes of fluid
straight after the race, take it steady
and please rehydrate slowly.
“The key with getting your race day fuelling and hydration correct, is to have
practised it in training leading up to the big day. Good Luck everyone!”
Martin Yelling (PhD) Vitality Run Series coaching and training ambassador
Advertising and the public sector working together.

8. Consider using the on-course race
energy drink (just before the 9 mile
mark) or take your own ‘fuel’ with
you.
6.Start the race well hydrated, but be
careful not to drink too much, there’s
no need to glug litres of fluid prior to
the start, trust your body.
Ocean are proud supporters of Run Hackney.
Find out more at
www.oceanoutdoor.com
7. There are 5 water stations on course,
but don’t feel you have to take a
drink at each one, drink to your thirst
throughout the race.
