Undergraduate pathways An undergraduate pathway is a single course comprising four stages of study. After successfully completing this programme you will be awarded a Bachelor’s degree from Birmingham City University. University Foundation The University Foundation programme is Stage 1 of the undergraduate pathway. The transition from high school to university is a big step, perhaps the most important in your life. The staff at BCUIC understand this, and will provide you with ongoing guidance and support, as well as the knowledge and skills you need. Second Year Degree and Final Year Degree The Second and Final Year Degrees are stages 3 and 4 of the undergraduate pathway, and are taught at Birmingham City University. Postgraduate pathway A postgraduate pathway is a single course comprising two stages of study. When you successfully complete the pathway you will be awarded a Master’s degree from Birmingham City University. First Year Degree Pre-Master’s The First Year Degree is Stage 2 of the undergraduate pathway. You will experience the first-year curriculum of Birmingham City University, but with smaller class sizes and extra academic contact hours. The teaching and learning experience will enable you to fully develop your knowledge and The Pre-Master’s programme is Stage 1 of the postgraduate pathway. It is one, two or three semesters long, depending on your chosen pathway. It has been designed to prepare international students who have not qualified for direct entry to Birmingham City University’s Master’s degrees. Undertaking the Pre-Master’s programme will allow you to adjust to the rigorous research and independent study requirements of a postgraduate degree and help you get the most out of your Master’s studies at Birmingham City University. Master’s The Master’s degree is Stage 2 of the postgraduate pathway, and is taught by Birmingham City University. English language English language is a full-time course specifically designed for international students who need to improve their level of English before starting undergraduate or postgraduate academic studies. They include a seamless transition from high school to university. While the initial stages of your university life are the most important, often this is when many students feel anxious and homesick. We understand this and have put processes in place to ease the transition from high school to university-level studies. BCUIC also offers you additional study Pathways University Foundation (Stage 1) Duration One, two or three semesters (depending on subject area and level of prior studies) support, English language assistance and unparalleled personalised attention. The extra academic contact hours will allow you to fully develop your knowledge and understanding of each module. You will also be studying in small groups, which will give you an unmatched level of access to your teachers. Intakes September, January and May Structure The two-semester programme normally comprises four or five modules each semester, combining academic studies in your subject area with skills modules. Each module is tailored towards your chosen undergraduate degree. Assessment Assessment for most modules is continuous, and consists of examinations, assignments and case study analysis. The three-semester extended Art and Design Foundation comprises an extra four modules. First Year Degree (Stage 2) Two semesters September and January (the January intake is only available for Accountancy, Business, Economics and Marketing pathways) You will normally undertake four or five modules each semester, which mirror the curriculum taught at Birmingham City University. Current or former academic staff from Birmingham City University often teach these modules. You will receive extra support through tutorials and individual consultations with teachers, as well as access to computer laboratories. Assessment for most modules is continuous, and consists of examinations, assignments and case study analysis. Second Year Degree (Stage 3) Two semesters September You will undertake four to five modules each semester to further study the key areas within your degree. You will receive extra support through tutorials, individual consultations with teachers, English language assistance and access to computer laboratories. Assessment is via a mix of course work, examinations, essays and other written assignments. Course work may include problem-solving activities, consultancy projects, presentations, business simulations and individual and group reports. Final Year Degree (Stage 4) Two semesters September You will undertake four to five modules each semester to further study the key areas within your degree. For some degrees, you will be able to specialise in, or concentrate on, a particular stream within a subject area. You will receive extra support through tutorials, individual consultation with academic staff, English language assistance and access to computer laboratories. Duration Intakes Structure Assessment Pre-Master’s (Stage 1) One, two or three semesters (depending on your subject area and level of prior studies) September, January, March and June While at BCUIC, you will study a series of modules that will prepare you for a seamless progression to Stage 2 of your chosen taught Master’s degree. All modules include core academic skills relevant to postgraduate degree study. Assessment for most modules is continuous, and consists of examinations, assignments and case study analysis. Master’s (Stage 2) 12 or 18 months depending on chosen pathway September and January (certain Master’s only) During the Master’s (Stage 2) programme, you will build on what you have learned during the Pre-Master’s programme and extend your professional understanding about your area of study. A course work Master’s degree usually consists of a series of specialist modules in structured class, seminar or tutorial formats. A short research thesis component may be included and this prepares you for what is required for a research Master’s degree. The £4.5 million Moor Lane Pavilion opened in 2004 and has 12 grass pitches and an all-weather floodlit pitch.
