‘Ramo Vigrahavan Dharmaha’
‘In Ramayana, there are three
instances
where
even
knowledgeable people commit
mistake in understanding the
intricacies of Dharma. They are 1.
Killing of Vali 2. Desertion of Sita
3. Slaying of Sambuka. Did we
ever devoutly study Ramayana?
Did we ever approach any learned
scholars with reverence to
understand these complexities?
Above all, what is the Dharma we
are observing to criticize Rama
and His Dharma? Sage Valmiki
gave an indication to this effect
‘Sataam
Dharmam
Hi
Susukshmaha’ – The Dharma of
noble men (Satpurusha) is very subtle. Vali himself admitted that killing him is
absolutely valid according to Dharma. Vali mentioned that he is just getting the
punishment of his sin. The highest Dharma of a king is to respect and act
according to public opinion. The king should not look for personal comforts. In
fact, the king should be ready to forego all his pleasures for the sake of his
subjects. Hence, Rama deserted Sita, though he knows fully well that She did not
commit any mistake. Similarly, slaying of Sambuka should be evaluated with the
law prevalent in Treta Yuga at which time that incident occurred. Sage Narada
mentioned ‘Bhavini Sudra Yonyaamtu Tapascharya Kalau Yuge’ – Sudras shall
perform ‘Tapas’ in Kali Yuga i.e. Sudras performing Tapas in Treta Yuga is against
the Smriti (code of conduct or law). Let’s evaluate this from the social point of
view. It’s like an engineer performing a medical surgery, just because he read
some books and is familiar with the procedure. Hence, read Ramayana carefully.
Sit near those intellectuals who spent all their lives diving deep into Ramayana.
Make an attempt to understand the subtleties of Dharma.’

Spiritual Quest
(Answers by Sri Samavedam Shanmukha Sarma garu)
Are there any restrictions such as time, place etc., for doing Nama japa? Do we
require any specific ‘Upadesa’ for reciting God’s name?
There are no restrictions of time and place for doing Nama japa. You can do it
anywhere and anytime. ‘Upadesa’ is required only for Mantra japa, not for Nama
japa. God’s names such as ‘Rama’, ‘Krishna’, ‘Siva’, ‘Durga’, ‘Lakshmi’ etc., can be
recited always. This definitely yields the grace of God.
(Sage Narada)
Those who recite the names - Hari,
Kesava, Govida, Vasudeva, Janardhana,
Siva, Sankara, Rudra, Neelakanta,
Trilochana - Kali will not trouble them.
