At our March Social Rose Trehaven kept us all enthralled telling us about the
Haunted Walks she leads in Central.
The Jester boat trip on Tuesday 24 March was a super trip. We were lucky
to have booked when we did as it was one of its last trips before moving
to Cape Town where they will be doing trips from the V&A Waterfront to
Robin Island. We opened the booking to another retirement group and from
all accounts they also really enjoyed the trip.
The run-down on omega 3 fats
We all know that omega 3 fat is good for our
health, but do we actually know why they are
good for us? FutureLife dietitians have this
to say about this essential fatty acid and its
benefits.
What exactly are they?
Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids are considered
essential fats because our bodies require
them for normal bodily function however
we cannot make them and therefore they
need to be consumed from food sources or
supplements.
Studies have shown that the ratio of omega
3 and 6 is very important and that omega 6 is
often in excess, which affects brain function,
increased incidence of atherosclerosis and
inflammatory diseases, and decreased
anti-inflammatory effects of omega 3. It is
recommended that people consume more
omega 3 fatty acids from vegetable and
marine sources. The recommended intake
of omega 3 is approximately 1.1g a day
for adult women, 1.4g a day for pregnant
women and 1.6g for men.
Health benefits
•Brain function: Omega 3 fatty acids, DHA
specifically, are the brain’s building blocks
and appear to be the fat type preferred by the
brain and nervous system. All three omega 3
fats have been studied in mental health and
have found to have unique and important
contributions to overall brain and nervous
system
functioning.
Research
has also found omega 3 fats to be
beneficial to several conditions such
as anxiety disorders, attention deficithyperactivity
disorder
(ADHD),
autism,
borderline
personality
disorder, eating disorders, epilepsy,
bipolar
disorder,
post-partum
depression, and schizophrenia.
•Arthritis
and
inflammatory
conditions: All three omega 3 fats
have been shown to reduce the
synthesis of aggressive inflammatory
response cells. Therefore by
increasing the amount of omega 3
fats consumed, the production of
immune cells with anti-inflammatory
effects
is
increased.
Studies
have therefore found remarkable
improvement in inflammation of
rheumatoid arthritis with omega 3
supplementation and recommend
a diet that includes baked or grilled
fish one to two times per week and/
or fish oil supplementation.
•Cardiovascular disease: Several
studies have shown that eating
fish is associated with a decreased
cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk.
Omega 3 fats have also been shown
to decrease triglyceride fat levels in
the blood which further reduce CVD
risk. The anti-inflammatory effect of

I would rather have one rose and a kind word
from a friend while I’m here, than a whole truck
load when I’m gone.
RESTAURANT As Spargo’s no longer serve breakfasts and only opens at 12 noon, we went
across the road to FRESCO, which is also owned by the same people.
BRUNCH
We had a super turnout of 20, so obviously the later starting time is a good idea.
Our next brunch will be at the Old Grey Sports Club on Tuesday
21 April at 10.30.
HIKING REPORT
Ah well AB and team did not win the Cricket World Cup, but then the game was not played over 50 overs. Rain/Duckworth
Lewis and SA do not go together - like love and marriage, or a horse and carriage ... March walks were all completed in spite
of rain and overgrown pathways at Fynbos; stifling heat over Kini Bay; wind at Blue Water Bay and a fairly wet van Stadens,
with newly cleared pathways. Sea turtles were spotted at Kini Bay along with some of our group swimming.
The safety of our walkers remains a priority. Hike leaders should be clear about the distance, stops and end point of walks.
People must stay together having wisely chosen the long or short walk. There are a few who like to do their own thing,
stopping off and splitting the group. Please stay together! The security we sometimes need to arrange cannot keep an eye on
all, if long gaps occur. Thank you.
Our thoughts, prayers and good wishes go out to Andy and family. His treatment must be successful - we want him back
soon, walking in our midst. ALAN HANCOCK

10 PIN BOWLING REPORT
2 MARCH: 23 players – with 15 scoring over 100. Hennie and Richard who tied on 138 (their highest scores EVER !!)
were pipped at the post by Derek with brilliant 140. You guys were ON FIRE !!! The ladies weren’t far behind with super
scores, Mary had 137, closely followed by Bobby with 134 – wow you are all amazing.
9 MARCH: 29 Players with 18 players scoring over 100. There was a tie between John and Derek with 134. Hightest score
for the ladies not far behind the men was Rachel with 133 followed by Sophia with 130 and Bobby allowed Derek to get
past her 128 on the last frame. Competition is rife !!! Colleen’s sister-in-law Pat Matthews visited us from East London but
opted not to play.
16 MARCH: 29 players with 13 scoring over 100. Rachel ousted all the men with her 128 but she was closely followed by
Derek with 127.
23 MARCH: 24 Players with 15 getting over 100. Top score AGAIN was Rachel with an incredible 150 !! John wasn’t too
far behind with 144 – super scores both of you.
30 MARCH: 23 Players with 13 getting over 100. Rob decided, enough is enough,
Rachel wasn’t going to get the better of him this week - SO HE SCORED 199 – THE
HIGHEST SCORE EVER IN THE HISTORY OF THE SAARP TENPIN CLUB !!!!
WOW – now you all have a target of 200 to beat him. Rob you are our champion !!!
Jackie did exceptionally well and probably thought his score of 153 was enough to take
the men’s section, Sorry Jacks – but it was still an awesome score. Mary was the top
scorer for the women with a super 141.
Little Liam O’Conner, pictured left with his Granny Mary and Grandad John, arrived
with his Mom, Wendy and of course Mary went into that Granny overdrive mode and
showed us what Granny inspiration can do !!!
TenPin is every Monday at Lighthouse at the Boardwalk

SAARP TENPIN IN GEORGE
Mary and John Giddings befriended Gerry and
Jana when they joined us at Lighthouse in February, they are from the SAARP Tenpin in George.
When the Giddings’ stayed in Knysna for a few
days last month, they decided to play some games
with them in George. They said it was most enjoyable and the people were very friendly and made
them most welcome. They would recommend anyone staying down that way to join them for a game
or two.
