CAM Awards Recognize Sachse Construction Excellence
Detroit’s 1265 Griswold (DIME), The Albert among magazine’s top picks for best projects
DETROIT, May 18, 2015 — Two Sachse Construction projects – the Detroit Institute of Music
Education and The Albert – are among CAM Magazine’s 12 most interesting and significant
projects for 2015. Sachse Construction collaborated with Neumann/Smith Architecture on the
DIME’s space at 1265 Griswold building (owned and managed by Bedrock Real Estate
Services), and Kraemer Design Group and ROSSETTI on The Albert (managed by Broder and
Sachse Release Estate Services).
“Detroit is becoming an example of revitalization at its best,’” said Todd Sachse, CEO, Sachse
Construction. “It proves what can happen when private industry, economic development
organizations and visionary city leaders work together. Across the country people are
optimistic about Detroit, calling it a great place to invest. We are proud to be such an integral
part of Detroit’s growth.”
Each year the Construction Association of Michigan selects 12 outstanding construction
projects from hundreds of submittals. This year’s winners will be featured in the publication’s
fall special construction issue and recognized at the CAM Tradeshow in February 2016. There,
one of the 12 projects will be announced as the CAM 2015 Project of the Year.
Detroit Institute of Music Education (DIME)
Sachse Construction was selected to renovate the six-story, 36,000 square foot building
located in Capitol Park. Formerly the Bamlet, the building was built in 1897 and fell into
significant disrepair. Special attention was needed to preserve the original architectural
character of the building, including its arched corridors, curved brick and stone façade.
The building required a modern stage and a sophisticated sound system. Additionally,
the 116-year old building required all new electrical, HVAC and plumbing.
The Albert
Sachse Construction completely renovated the historic 12-story building, built in 1929
and designed by Albert Kahn. It required significant work, having suffered fire damage
years ago. Adding to the complexity of the project, Sachse was challenged to maintain
the historic and design integrity of the building while incorporating modern systems and
amenities.
The CAM Awards honor the best construction projects in Michigan each year based on
innovative construction techniques, overall appearance and significance to the community. The
magazine also considers management techniques, budget and scheduling, and a positive work
culture as part of its evaluation criteria.
“In the case of Sachse Construction, significance to the community was very high,” said Mary
Kremposky, associate editor, CAM magazine. “Sachse took one of the most dangerous
buildings in Detroit and helped turn it into a music education institute in the Capitol Park
district. The Albert ranks very high in terms of sheer aesthetic appeal.”
Sachse Construction is a perennial favorite of CAM magazine. Last year, the company was
honored for its collaborative work on “The Z” parking structure, a 10-story, 535,000 square foot
mixed-used parking deck located in the heart of Detroit’s central business district.
