ST. JOHN 2015 ST. FRANCIS HOUSE MEN’S CLOTHING DRIVE
Happy Spring! Every year in June, St. John's parish conducts a Men's Clothing Drive for
St. Francis House. It is the largest day shelter in New England, serving over 800 men and
women on a daily basis. St. Francis House distributes clothing to their guests; on average,
St. Francis House distributes 250 sets of clothing per week.
To help meet this ongoing need, we are collecting men's gently-used, everyday clothing such
as jeans, T-shirts, sweatshirts, hats and footwear, as well as new socks for their Foot Clinic,
which provides foot care and socks to homeless clients.
We hope you will take the time for a quick spring cleaning, and remember to bring the items to
our church garage on the weekend of June 6 & 7, 2015.
If you need to drop items off sooner due to travel schedules, etc. or have any questions please
contact Shilan Yeung, either email at shilanhappy@gmail.com or text/call at 508-801-7072.
Right now, the most needed items include:
* Men’s pants (especially jeans – given out on a daily basis)
* T-shirts (extremely important - given out on a daily basis)
* Footwear (extremely important)
* “New” Socks
* Sweaters & Sweatshirts
* Backpacks/duffel bags
* Coats, hats, gloves, and scarves (larger sizes an extreme need)
They DO NOT accept children’s items or used under garments or discolored items.
If you can put your items in boxes or secured bags, and label it with the general
contents, it would be a great help with sorting. Thank you for your generosity!
BOOK DISCUSSION GROUP: The St. J ohn’s Book Discussion Group was created ten years ago with the basic
goal of helping people to understand better the concepts, doctrines, ideas, people, events, institutions, history and
relationships that make up the Catholic experience. We have done this through nine or ten meetings a year, held at
the parish and focused on a particular book or publication, defined broadly to include, for example, a selection
from scripture, an encyclical or a group of poems. There is no membership in the group – it has been open to everyone with an interest and a willingness to contribute to the discussions.
As we enter our second decade and embark on a new relationship with spiritual neighbors from St. Paul’s (and
other parishes in the area) we feel it is appropriate to pause and consider ways we might improve the
Book Discussion Group – with new members, new approaches to the selection of books and new discussion
formats. We are proud of all we have accomplished – the list of books we have read is impressive and we continue
to have 10-15 participants at each meetings, an ideal number for lively and fruitful discussion – but we know we
can do better.
Thus, we will hold a meeting at the parish center (the building on the opposite side of the parking lot from the
school) on Thursday evening, June 18, from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. to discuss the future of the book group.
Please come and bring your ideas, suggestions and proposals for specific books or types of books you would like to
read and discuss, along with any thoughts you have about organizing this wonderful effort in adult faith formation.
There is no commitment -- we welcome those who want to become active as well as those who just want to listen!

St. John the Evangelist Parish is pleased to recognize the following students who
celebrated the Sacrament of Confirmation on May 12, 2015. Students prepared for
Confirmation over a two year period. Each performed many hours of service to
their communities, attended classes and deepened their relationship with God
through group and personal activities. With the reception of this sacrament, these
sixty-three students completed their initiation into the Catholic Church.

ST. PAUL MEN’S FELLOWSHIP GROUP: The St. Paul Men's F ellowship Group meets on Monday, June 8,
2015 at 7:30 PM in the St. Paul Parish Hall, 502 Washington St. in Wellesley. Parking is available behind the
Church.
Chapter Four of Pope Francis' Apostolic Exhortation Evangelii Gaudium (the Joy of the Gospel) continues many
themes. In this chapter he develops: the importance of a "Confession of faith" and commitment to society; the
kingdom and its challenge; the Church's teaching on social questions; how in union with God we hear a plea;
keeping in fidelity to the Gospel lest we run in vain; the special place of the poor in God's people; the economy and
the distribution of income; concern for the vulnerable; "time is greater than space"; "unity prevails over conflict";
"realities are more important than ideas"; "the whole is greater than the part"; the importance of dialogue between
faith, reason and science; ecumenical dialogue; relations with Judaism and inter-religious dialogue and finally,
social dialogue in a context of religious freedom.
In a touching and personal note, he says, (208) "If anyone feels offended by my words, I would respond that I
speak them with affection and with the best of intentions, quite apart from any personal interest or political
ideology. My words are not those of a foe, or an opponent. I am interested only in helping those who are in thrall
to an individualistic, indifferent and self-centered mentality to be freed from those unworthy chains and to attain a
way of living and thinking which is more humane, noble and fruitful, and which will bring dignity to their presence
on this earth."
All men of the parish are cordially invited to come and continue to explore these wide-ranging directions.
