Dear Parents and Caregivers
Report for P & C meeting on Tuesday 24 March (7:30 in Outside School Hours Care)
Prior to a P & C meeting I will provide a list of topics that I will raise at the P & C meeting. This provides the opportunity
for those attending the meeting to be prepared to be involved in the discussion. In the next Herald following the
meeting I shall summarise the main points discussed.
An effective partnership with parents and the association must be based on shared information and open
communications.

School Improvement Agenda
Half-day planning sessions were undertaken for all year levels last week as we prepare to implement the revised
mathematics program in Term 2. Teachers will be implementing the plans for 2 to 3 weeks then a whole day session
will review progress and plan for the next 2 to 3 weeks. The process will then be repeated. The aim is to have a tight
focus on effective teaching and learning in mathematics such that by the end of the term we are able to sustain teaching
and learning strategies into the future.

Office Changes
Our wonderful BSM (Carol Halba) is taking leave until June and so Julie Halliday and Kathryn Watson have stepped up
to the mark to take on the tasks that need to be done. Michelle Duffield has provided more hours and so this is giving
us some breathing space. Please keep the situation is in mind when dealing with the office. We are investigating
staffing options to ensure our administration continues to be efficient and effective.

Staffing news for Term 2
We will welcome back Kristie Itel to Year 2 next term, replacing Ms Anita Roberts. Kristie will continue to share the
teaching load with Mrs Handy.
As we gain greater understanding of the needs of the students we are beginning to align professional expertise with
curriculum and learning. Two changes to staffing duties in term 2 point the way to the future:

Mrs Robertson (Teacher Librarian) will devote one day per week to developing our data collection
and management. This will help us to make informed decisions about programs and resources for
our students.

Mrs Roberts will replace Mrs Robertson for that one day, continuing to provide literacy lessons to
year 2 and some Preps. She will also spend 3 days per fortnight as our Science Lead Teacher,
working with the Science Team to prepare the way for implementation of the Science program in
term 3.

Facilities and the Environment
Lachlan Neilan is the P & C vice-president with a leading role in this area. We now need to form a team of staff and
parents who are interested in developing the school grounds and the facilities. The task is then to develop a list of tasks
and projects that may be scheduled and financed into the future.


$20000 for the Leukaemia
Foundation. Thank you to
everyone who supported them
by coming along to skate night,
purchasing raffle tickets or
making a donation to the team.
On a personal note, thank you
so much to everyone for the
warm welcome back to work. I
have received so many kind
words and well wishes from
staff, parents and students. This
is truly a special community that
I am so pleased and proud to be
part of.

House shirts are available at the
uniform shop. Children are
encouraged to bring along spare
shoes and socks as the course
may be muddy.
The aim for all students is to
celebrate a healthy lifestyle and
have a go. Each child earns a
point for participating and this is
IMPORTANT as the totals at the
end can be very close. Parents
and families are welcome
spectators – bring your own
chairs, rugs and sun protection.

coin donations which went to the
Leukaemia Foundation’s World’s
Greatest Shave.
Cross Country
The Cross Country will be held
next Tuesday 31 March. Please
note: Correction to last
week’s Sport section in The
Herald: Year 3 students run
with the senior school this
year: from 9.00am.
Years 3-6 races will run 9.00 –
10.45;
Years P-2 will run from 11.30.

Whole School Assembly on
Tuesday 31 March at 2.30pm.
On Friday 24 April we will be
holding a whole school assembly
to commemorate ANZAC Day.
The assembly will begin at 2.00
pm in the auditorium. There will
be representatives from the
Australian Defence Force
involved, and each class will
have two representatives laying
a wreath during the assembly.
All parents and school
community members are
welcome to join us for this
important event.
Every Day Counts
As we reach the end of Term 1,
parents are reminded of the
importance of sending children
to school every day.
Unless your child is ill, it is
expected that your child will be
at school learning, every day of
the school year. This term
concludes at 3pm next Thursday
2 April.

Australian Defence Force and a
retired service person from the
Kedron/Wavell RSL involved in
the assembly. Mrs Ormiston has
selected children to sing at the
assembly. There will be two
representatives from each class
laying a wreath. Two senior ADF
children will be representing the
defence families in the school.
This is an important date in our
school’s calendar as we have a
large number of Australian
Defence Families at the school.
Everyone is welcome so please
come along and help us educate
our children on the importance of
ANZAC Day. Help us remember

Anzac Day Assembly
The school will be holding a
whole school assembly to
commemorate ANZAC Day on
Friday 24 April 2015. This is the
first Friday of Term 2. The
assembly will commence
promptly at 2 pm in the
Auditorium. There will be
representatives from the

of the landing of the ANZACs at
Gallipoli. ANZAC stands for
Australian and New Zealand
Army Corp. Australians
recognise 25 April as an
occasion of national
remembrance, which takes two
forms.
Commemorative services are
held at dawn which is the time of
the original landing across the
nation. Later in the day, exsoldiers take part in marches.
Commemorative ceremonies
are held at war memorials
around the country.
During World War 1, the
ANZACs landed at Gallipoli to
fight the Turkish army because
they were Germany’s allies. At
the end of 1915 the ANZACs
were called off and they left
Gallipoli. Over 8 000 Australian
soldiers had died.
The spirit of ANZAC recognises
the qualities of courage,
mateship and sacrifice which
were demonstrated at the
Gallipoli landing.
Mrs Boxall is on leave for the
last week of term. Senior
Concert Band resumes on the
first Tuesday of Term 2 (21
April). Could all band members
please arrive at 7.20am so we
can all help to set up.

Mobile School Dental
Clinic News
The mobile school dental clinic
will be open from Monday 30
March.
It will be open Monday to
Thursday and every second
Friday.
Parental consent/medical dental
history forms have been issued
previously to students in Years
2, 3, 5 and 6. If you would like
your child to have a dental
examination please return the
fully completed consent form to
the class teacher or school office
immediately. Once dental staff
receive a completed form your
child will receive a dental
examination. If your child
requires further dental treatment,
a ‘statement of treatment’ form
will be issued for your signed
consent.
All children from 4 years of age
through to Year 10 are eligible
for our free service.
However we can also see any
children from age 2 to 17 years
of age who receive the Federal
Government’s Child Dental
Benefit or who have a current
Health Care Card. Please
contact us if you receive this
benefit and would like your
child/children to have a full
dental check-up. We will carry
out all necessary treatment and
there are no out of pocket
expenses. You will be required
to sign the Medicare bulk billing
assignment form at each
appointment. Please call us on

Year 4 Fete Items
The Year 4 classes are
organising a "Lucky Jar" stand at
the Fete. We would love any
clean, empty, glass jars with a
screw lid that you have at
home. If possible please wash
the jars and remove any
labels. We greatly appreciate
your help and closer to the date
of the Fete we will be asking for
donations to go inside the
jars. All year four classes will be
working hard towards making
our Lucky Jar stand fantastic but
with a little extra help from our
school community our stand
could be even better!

World’s Greatest
Shave
The Hairless at the Hills team
would like to thank all the
wonderful parents and students
for participating in Crazy Hair
day last week. With your gold
coin donations we raised $900
for the team. We are currently
sitting at 22 in the top 100 teams
of Australia and have raised a
whopping $20,581.00. We are
confident we will reach $21,000
by the end of the month. We are
so proud of our efforts to help
with this wonderful fundraiser
and to support Mr Wiedman.

The Fathering Project
A rare and exciting event Prof
Bruce Robinson AM (Western
Australian of the Year) is
presenting an informative
information session on the
exciting University of WA
Fathering Project.
The session will focus on the
aims and successes of the
project with a view to
establishing similar fathering
groups here for the benefit of
children, dads and schools.
Cost: $15 per person which
includes a booklet and light
refreshments to be charged to
schools.

School Open Day
On Sunday 3 May, Craigslea
State High School will present
our Open Day for interested
parents, carers, prospective
