Mr O’Regan, our Deputy Head Teacher will be leaving at the end of this term. He has been appointed as the Head Teacher of Lansbury Lawrence Primary School in Tower Hamlets. Mr O’Regan has been the Deputy Head for five years and before that he was a class teacher for over 10 years. It will be very sad to see him leave but we all wish him the very best in his important role as Head Teacher in another London school. I know our school will build up a strong partnership with Lansbury Lawrence Primary School. We look forward to sharing our expertise between the two schools. At the end of last term there were interviews for the position of Deputy Head Teachers to replace Mr O’Regan. The Governors decided to create two positions. The school is increasing in size with the introduction of a Pre-school and it was decided the time was right to appoint two Deputy Head Teachers. Mrs Louise Bridge and Miss Becky Whitwam were successful in the interview process and will take up their positions of deputy head teacher after the Easter holidays. Mrs Bridge will be responsible for achievement and standards and Miss Whitwam will be responsible for pastoral care of all the children. I am sure you will want to wish them all the very best in their new role. They are very experienced members of staff and I know they have the full support of the school staff and parents. It is very important that the school continues to build on its strengths and looks to the future. The appointment of Mrs Bridge and Miss Whitwam will strengthen the school and ensure that the children of Sandringham are successful. Robert Cleary Head Teacher SANDRINGHAM PRE-SCHOOL I am very happy to inform you that Sandringham Pre-School passed the preregistration inspection by Ofsted and so will be opening after the Easter Holidays with 16 places for eligible children. To find out if your child is eligible for a place you will need to complete a form that is then sent to the Early Education Team. These forms are available from the school office. If you are entitled to a place they will send you a confirmation letter which you should bring in to the school office as soon as possible. Alternatively, you can call the Early Education Team on 020 3373 0980 or email twoyearold.childcare@newham.gov.uk If you have any questions or would like an Early Education form, please speak to the staff in the main office. Please remember, places are very limited. Mr R D Cleary Head Teacher APRIL 2015 ISSUE Page 2 William Shakespeare & Year 4 Year 4 have been studying William Shakespeare this term and have been looking closely at his famous tragedy “Macbeth.” We spent a week working alongside The Young Shakespeare Company learning the play and performing it only 3 days later to our parents. The week long workshop gave our children new acting skills and it was amazing opportunities to see our children gain confidence whilst fully immersed in Shakespeare’s most famous play. The children were fully engaged throughout the week and have been enjoying follow up work since. The children were a credit to the school during their performance and we certainly have some budding actors amongst us. Well done year 4! Miss Blaydes Year 4—Year Group Leader NSPCC PANTS campaign As children get older they do get inquisitive about themselves and other peoples bodies and though this is natural it is important that all children learn about their own and other people’s privacy. The NSPCC has put together resources for children and parents to help them address this issue sensitively. The NSPCC advises that parents teach their children the Underwear Rule and to help protect them from abuse. It's a simple way that parents can help keep children safe from sexual abuse – without using scary words or even mentioning sex. More information can be found on the NSPCC web site- http://www.nspcc.org.uk/preventing-abuse/keepingchildren-safe/underwear-rule/ Talk PANTS and you've got it covered PANTS is a really easy way for you to explain the Underwear Rule to your child: Privates are private Always remember your body belongs to you No means no Talk about secrets that upset you Speak up, someone can help Miss Whitwam Assistant Head Teacher and Child Protection Lead APRIL 2015 ISSUE Page 3 YEAR 6 SATs We are coming up to a very important time for the pupils in year 6 and it is important that you are aware of the arrangements and how to prepare your child for these important tests. It is vital that your child attends school every day and that they are completing their homework and reading at home. To help prepare your child, you can help them to put together a revision timetable to revise key areas in the next few weeks. Revision needs to be little and often and they can use revision guide books and websites such as KS2 Bitesize. During the actual SATs week, your child must attend every day and please ensure they are on time. There will be breakfast club for the Y6 children every morning during the tests to help relax and calm them before starting the tests. This can be a stressful time for your Y6 child but please make sure they feel calm and confident before approaching the tests; as a school we just want them to do their best. EASTER SCHOOL Over the Easter holidays, some of the Y6 children will be invited in to school for extra revision. Please make sure you support your child's learning by making sure they attend these extra revision classes. If you have any questions at all, please speak to myself or your child's class teacher. Thank you for your continued support. Sandringham's year 5/6 netball team were crowned winter games champions after beating St. Edwards in a hard fought final at Cumberland Secondary school. Our hockey team narrowly missed out on the gold medal as they were beaten 2-1 in extra time in the final, while our Boccia team finished a very credible 3rd winning the bronze medal at the Newham HUB. All our athletes had a fantastic day competing against children from 24 schools from all over Newham. Congratulations to all those students who were involved. Girls Football Team Newham Champions! Recently our year 5/6 girl’s football team made the Newham League Final for the third year in a row. This year our girls faced Dersingham Primary in what would turn out to be an epic final. After finishing normal time at 2-2 our girls were faced with a penalty shootout. It turned out to be a time to shine for our brilliant goal keeper Chyenne Egan-Ewans who pulled off some fantastic saves. Her efforts were then finished off by our up and coming star Sameeha Khalique who coolly finished the game with an outstanding strike. This game ended an amazing season for our girl’s football team who finished the season unbeaten in a league that was made up of the 32 teams across Newham. Congratulations to all the girls who have represented Sandringham football this year.
