We have not performed austeriries, but got scorched ourselves, nevertheless; time is not gone but we approach the end. Desires do not wear out, only we ourselves are struck down by senility. भोगा = worldly pleasures न = not ु = enjoyed भा वयं एव = we ourselves ु भाः = eaten up तपः = austerities न = not तं = performed वयं एव = we ourselves ताः = burnt कालः = time न = not ् ॥ वैराय शतकम ॥ यातः = gone वयं एव = we ourselves याताः = gone तृा = desire न = not जीणा = reduced वयं = we एव = alone जीणाः = aged ु माबां पिलतेनाितं िशरः । वलीिभमख गाऽािण िशिथलाये तृक ै ा तणायते ॥ ८॥ Face covered with wrinkles, the head painted white with gray hair, the limbs feeble, and yet Desire alone stays youthful. वली = with wrinkles ु ं = face मख आबां = attacked पिलतेन = grey hair अितं = painted white िशरः = head गाऽािण = limbs िशिथलाये = enfeebled तृक ै ा = desire alone तणायते = rejuvenating ु िनवृा भोगेा पषबमानोऽिप गिलतः ु जीिवतसमाः । समानाः याताः सपिद सदो ु शन ैयानं घनितिमरे च नयने अहो मूढः कायदिप मरणापायचिकतः ॥ ९॥ With desires receding, even much respect of many dropping away, dear friends close to my heart fleeing to heaven, standing up slowly with 9 10 ् ॥ वैराय शतकम ॥ the help of a stick, eyesight darkened by cataracts,—even then the body in its stupidity, wonders at the prospect of death! िनवृा = receded भोगेा = desire for pleasures ु = person पष बमानः = respect अिप = also गिलतः = lost समानाः = compeers याताः = gone to heaven सपिद = swiftly ु सदः = dear friends जीिवतसमाः = as much as life शन ैः = slowly ु यानं = raise oneself slowly with the help of a staff घनितिमरे = covered by dense cataracts च = and नयने = eyes अहो = alas मूढः = stupidity कायः = the body ततिप = even then मरणापायचिकतः = wonders at the thought of death आशा नाम नदी मनोरथजला तृातराकुला रागमाहवती िवतक िवहगा ध ैयिुमंिसनी । ु ु मोहातसराितगहना ूोिचातटी ु मनसो नि योगीराः ॥ १०॥ ताः पारगता िवश Hope, like a river, with fantasies as water, agitated by waves of desires; attachments to various objects serving as prey; abounding in thoughts of greed, like birds; destroying the foes of courage; surrounded by eddies of ignorance ् ॥ वैराय शतकम ॥ deep and difficult to cross; with precipitous banks of anxiety— such a river the perfected yogis of pure minds, cross to enjoy beatitude. आशा = hope नाम = named नदी = river मनोरथजला = of the water of desires तृा = passions तर = waves आकुला = raging रागमाहवती = grasped by attachments to objects िवतक = scheming thoughts (of greed) िवहगा = birds ध ैय = courage िु म = tree ंिसनी = destroyer मोहात = whirlpools of ignorance ु सर = impassable अित = great गहना = deep ूोु = precipitous िचा = anxiety तटी = banks ताः = their पारगताः = cross beyond ु = purified िवश मनसः = mind नि = enjoy योगीराः = great yogis २ िवषयपिरागिवडना । ु न संसारों चिरतमनपँयािम कुशलं ु िवपाकः पयानां जनयित भयं मे िवमृशतः । ु महिः पयौघ ैिरपिरगृिहता िवषया ् ११॥ महाो जाये सनिमव दात ं ु िवषियणाम ॥ 11 ् ॥ वैराय शतकम ॥ 12 I do not see true well-being accruing from actions repeated life after life in this world. On deep thought, I find it fearsome this collection of merits. By this great store of merits further enjoyments can be procured. Attachment to pleasures only brings more misery. िवषय = sensual objects पिराग = giving up िवडना = futile efforts न = not संसारों = produced through life after life चिरतं = performed ु अनपँयािम = see कुशलं = well-being िवपाकः = accumulation ु पयानां = of virtues जनयित = engenders भयं = fear मे = in me िवमृशतः = on deep thinking महिः = by great ु = merit पय ओघ ैः = stream िचर =constant पिरगृिहताः = earned च = and िवषया = sensual pleasures महाः = greatly जाये = produces सनिमव = misery दात ं ु = giving िवषियणां = those attached to pleasures अवँयं यातारिरतरमिु षािप िवषया िवयोगे को भेदजित न जनो ययममून ।् ् ॥ वैराय शतकम ॥ ु पिरतापाय मनसः ोजः ातादतल ु यं ा ेत े शमसखमनं िवदधित ॥ १२॥ Sensual pleasures will surely leave us sometime, even if they stay with us for a long time. Then, what difference does it make if the people discard them by their own choice? The mind is sorely afflicted if pleasures leave us of their own accord. However, if people renounce them voluntarily, such self-control gives infinite bliss. अवँयं = certainly यातारः = gone िचरतरं = long time उिषािप = even after staying िवषया = sensual pleasures िवयोगे = departure कः = what भेदः = difference जित = give up न = not जनः = people ययममून ् = that of their own accord ोजः = leave ातात ् = on their own ु = incomparable अतल पिरतापाय = misery मनसः = mental यं = by themselves ा = give up ेत े = verily these शम = self-control ु = happiness सखं अनं = infinite िवदधित = specially give 13 14 ् ॥ वैराय शतकम ॥ ॄानिववेकिनमलिधयः कुवहो रं ु ु पभोगभािप य धनाेकातो िनःृहाः । ु न सित न च ूाौ ढूयान ् साा परा ् १३॥ वाामाऽपिरमहानिप परं ं ु न शा वयम ॥ Ah! knowledge of Reality gained by discrimination through purified intellect must be difficult. For it results from the absolute renunciation of desires which wealth enabled them to enjoy. The same obtained in the past or present, or to be obtained in the future, we are unable to renounce, though they remain as mere longings. ॄान = knowledge of supreme reality िववेक = discrimination िनमल = pure िधयः = minds कुवि = do अहो = ah! रं = difficult to achieve यत ् = which ु ् = discard म उपभोगभािप = bringing enjoyment धनािन = wealth एकातः = wholly िनःृहाः = those devoid of craving साा = not obtained ु = in the past परा न = not सित = in the present न = not च = and ूाौ = obtained ढ = firm ् ॥ वैराय शतकम ॥ ूयान ् = conviction वाामाऽ = desiring पिरमहानिप = to obtain परं = lasting ं ु = to give up न = not शा = able वयं = we धानां िगिरकरेष ु वसतां ोितः परं ायतां ु णािबि शकुना िनःशमे शया । आनाौक अाकं त ु मनोरथोपरिचतूासादवापीतटु जषामाय ु बीडाकाननके िलकौतक ःु परं ीयते ॥ १४॥ Blessed are they who live in mountain-caves,meditating on the Supreme Light, with the birds fearlessly sitting on their laps drinking the tears of joy. Our life fades away, revelling in fantasies in palaces or on the banks of refreshing ponds, or in pleasure gardens. धानां = blessed िगिरकरेष ु = in mountain-caves वसतां = living ोितः = light परं = supreme ायतां = meditating आन = joy ु णान ् = tear drops अौक िपबि = drink शकुना = birds िनःशं = without fear अे शया = sitting on laps अाकं = our त ु = indeed मनोरथ = fantasies 15 ् ॥ वैराय शतकम ॥ 16 उपरिचत = created ूासाद = palaces वापीतट- = on banks of waters बीडा = sport ु = pleasure gardens काननके िलकौतक ु = fast जषां आयःु = life परं = fast ीयते = weakens ..14.. िभाशनं तदिप नीरसमेकवारं शा च भूः पिरजनो िनजदेहमाऽम ।् वं िवशीण शतखडमयी च का हा हा तथािप िवषया न पिरजि ॥ १५॥ For eating I have tasteless food once a day, after begging of alms; the earth for a bed, and my own body as a servant; for dress, a blanket made from hundreds of rags; and yet alas! sensual desires do not leave me! िभाशनं = food by begging तदिप = that too नीरसं = tasteless एकवारं = once a day शा = bed च = and भूः = earth पिरजनः = attendants वं = dress िवशीण = worn out शतखडमयी = torn in hundred pieces च = and का = patched up हा = alas हा = alas तथािप = even then ् ॥ वैराय शतकम ॥ िवषया = sensual craving न = not पिरजि = give up ु नौ मांसमी कनककलशािवपिमतौ ु ं ेागारं तदिप च शशाे न तिु लतम ।् मख ॐवूऽीं किरवरिशरिध जघनं ् १६॥ मु िन ं पं किवजनिवशेष ैगु कृ तम ॥ The poets give such metaphors as golden vessels to the breasts which are but two lumps of flesh; the mouth, seat of phlegm and mucus, are compared to the moon; the loins, outlet for wet urine, are likened to the forehead of an elephant; thus glorifying the human form that is always contemptible. नौ = breasts मांसमी = lumps of flesh ु कनककलशािवपिमतौ = compared to golden jugs ु ं = mouth मख े = saliva/phlegm अगारं = seat तदिप = yet च = and शशाे न = to the moon तिु लतं = compared to ॐवन ् = flowing मूऽ = urine िं = fouled किरवर = elephant िशर = head िध = likened to जघनं = hip and loins मु िन ं = ever despicable पं = form 17 ् ॥ वैराय शतकम ॥ 18 किवजन = poets िवशेष ैः = especially गु = great कृ तं = done एको रािगष ु राजते िूयतमादेहाधहारी हरो ु ललनासो न यारः । नीरागेष ु जनो िवम वाररबाणपगिवषािवमु धो जनः शेषः कामिवडिता िवषयाों ु न मों ु मः ॥ १७॥ Uniquely great is Shiva among the sensuous, for he shares half the body with His beloved; among the dispassionate no one excels Him in detachment from women. Oh! how profound is the glory of delusion! अजानन ् = not knowing दाहां = burning power पतत ु = falls शलभः = moth तीो = glowing दहन े = in fire स = that मीनः = fish अिप = also अानाद ् = due to ignorance विडश = fish-hook यतु ं = with अात ु = fish also due to ignorance eats from the hook 19 ् ॥ वैराय शतकम ॥ 20 िपिशतं = bait िवजानः = intellectual understanding अिप = even एते = herewith वयिमह = we here िवपालजिटलान ् = complex and dangerous न = not ु ामः = give up म कामानहह = sensuality गहनः = profound मोहमिहमा = power of delusion ु ाे िपबित सिललं शीतमधरंु तृषा श धु ातः शाानं कवलयित मांसािदकिलतम ।् ु ूदीे कामाौ सढतरमािलित वधूं ु ूतीकारं ाधेः सखिमित िवपयित जनः ॥ १९॥ When the mouth is parched with thirst, a person drinks cool and sweet water; when smitten with hunger the person eats rice, flavored with meat et cetera.; when afire with passion, he embraces the wife with great firmness; thus, joy is the remedying of these diseases(thirst,hungr,lust), and yet how much distress in these remedies! तृषा = thirst ु त ् = parched श आे = mouth िपबित = drinks सिललं = water शीत = cold मधरंु = refreshing धु ातः = hunger-stricken शाानं = cooked food कवलयित = eats ् ॥ वैराय शतकम ॥ मांसािदकिलतं = made delicious by adding meat, etc. ूदीे = aroused कामाौ = fiery desire ु सढतरं = very firmly आिलित = embraces वधूं = wife ूतीकारं = opposing ाधेः = diseases ु सखिमित = happiness िवपयित = upset जनः = persons ु सतामिभमताः साितगाः सदः तु ं वेँम सताः काणी दियता वय नविमानमूढो जनः । मा िवमनरं िनिवशते संसारकारागृहे सँय णभरु ं तदिखलं ध ु संित ॥ २०॥ Owning towering mansions, with sons honored by the learned and wealthy; with a charitable and youthful wife, the ignorant people regard this world as permanent, and enter this prison of repeated cycles of birth and death. 25 ् ॥ वैराय शतकम ॥ 26 गातर = waves of Ganges कण = minute bits शीकर = spray शीतलािन = cool िवाधर = celestial beings expert in the arts ु अिषत = inhabited चा = beautiful िशला = rock तलािन = plateaus ानािन = places िकं = why िहमवतः = rocky ूलयं = destruction गतािन = gone यत ् = which सावमान =humiliated परिपडरता = dependent on others ु मनाः = human beings िकं काः करेः ूलयमपु गता िनझरा वा िगिरः ूा वा तः सरसफलभृतो विल शाखाः । ु ािन ूसभमपगतूौयाणां खलानां वीे यख ःखािवयपवनवशािततॅूलतािन ॥ २५॥ Have the roots and herbs from the caves gone out of existence, or have the streams disappeared from the mountains, or have the trees yielding succulent fruits on their branches and barks from their trunks been destroyed, which would lead these wicked folks, destitute of good breeding, to show their faces, with eyebrows dancing like windblown creepers due to arrogance of laboriously earning their meager livelihood? Therefore, for what purpose did the Creator bring into existence the Meru mountain of infinite riches, which serves only to glorify itself? It destroys envy, arrogance, pride, impatience, and the stream of miseries. It is easily available everywhere, without great effort, and regarded as sacred by holy persons. It is like Shiva’s feeding house, ever accessible and inexhaustible. Thus do the perfected yogis describe it. िभा = alms आहारं = food अदै ं = not humiliating ु = pleasure, not dependent(earning,social duty,etc) अूितसखं भीितिदं = devoid of fear सवतः = totally माय = wicked envy मद = arrogance अिभमान = pride मथनं = destruction ् ॥ वैराय शतकम ॥ ःख = sorrow ओघ = flow िवंसनं = removal सवऽ = everywhere अहं = everyday अूय = with little effort ु सलभं = easily ु साधिूयं = dear to the holy persons पावनं = purifying शोः = Siva’s सऽं = feeding house अवाय =accessible अयिनिधं = inexhaustible शंसि = praise योगीराः = perfected yogis ४ भोगा ैयवणनम ।् भोगे रोगभयं कुले िु तभयं िव नृपालायं ु पे जराया भयम ।् मान े दैभयं बले िरपभयं ु खलभयं काये कृ ताायं शाे वािदभयं गणे ् ३१॥ ु नृणां वैरायमेवाभयम ॥ सव व ु भयाितं भिव 4 Description of the transiency of Enjoyments: There is fear of disease in the enjoyment of sensual pleasures; in lineage, fear of decline; in riches, fear of kings; fear of humiliation in honor; fear of enemies when in power; fear of old age in beauty; in learning, fear of disputants; in virtue, fear of the wicked; in body, fear of death. All facets of man’s life on earth engender fear; renunciation alone is fearless. भोग = enjoyments अ ैय = trasitoriness वणन ं = description 33 ् ॥ वैराय शतकम ॥ 34 भोगे = in enjoyment रोग = disease भयं = fear कुले = in lineage िु तभयं = fear of disgrace िव = wealth नृपालायं = fear of more powerful kings मान े = in honor दैभयं = dishonor बले = in strength ु िरपभयं = fear of enemies पे = in beauty जराया = old age भयं = fear शाे = in scriptural knowledge वािदभयं = fear of debaters ु = in virtue गणे खलभयं = fear of the wicked काये = in body कृ ताायं = fear of death सव = all व ु = existece भयाितं = pervaded by fear ु = in this world भिव नृणां = of persons वैरायं = renunciation एव = alone अभयं = fearless ु आबां मरणेन ज जरसा चालं यौवनं ु ूौढानािवॅमः । सोषो धनिलया शमसखं ु ालैनपा िरिभगण ु ा वनभवो ृ जन ैः लोकै म अ ैयण िवभूतयोऽपु हता मं न िकं के न वा ॥ ३२॥ Birth is attacked by death, and bright youth by old age; contentment ् ॥ वैराय शतकम ॥ by greed for wealth; peace of mind by seductive women; virtues by the envy of others; forests by beasts of prey; kings by the unscrupulous; and even fame by transitoriness. Is there anything on earth that is not afflicted by something? आबां = attacked मरणेन = by death ज = birth जरसा = by old age च = and अित = exceedingly उलं = bright यौवनं = youth सोषः = joy धनिलया = by greed ु = joy of self-control शमसखं ूौढ = clever अना = women िवॅमः = wiles लोकै ः = people’s मिरिभः = envy ु = virtues गणा ु = forests वनभवः ृ = by beasts of prey ालैनपा जन ैः = by the unscrupulous अ ैयण = by transience िवभूतयः = powers अिप = even उपहता = destroyed मं = afflicted by न = not िकं = what के न = by what 35 ् ॥ वैराय शतकम ॥ 36 वा = indeed ु ू ते आिधािधशत ैजन िविवध ैरारोयम लीयऽ पति तऽ िववृतारा इव ापदः । जातं जातमवँयमाश ु िववशं मृःु करोासात ् ् ३३॥ ु तिं तेन िनरशने िविधना यििमत ं सिरम ॥ Hundreds of varieties of illness root out health of people. Adversities find an open door wherever Laxmi, Goddess of Wealth, is present. Whatever is born, Death is sure to make it powerless and aborb it into itself, again and again. Then what has the Creator made that can be regarded as stable? आिधािधशत ैः = hundreds of ailments जन = of people िविवध ैः = various आरोयं = health उूते = destroyed लीः = where the Goddess of wealth यऽ = where पति = lurk तऽ = there िववृत = open ारा = doors इव = as if ापदः = perils जातं = born जातं = born अवँयं = surely आश ु = very soon िववशं = powerless मृःु = death करोित = makes आसात ् = its own तिं = then, what ् ॥ वैराय शतकम ॥ तेन = by him िनरशने = absolute िविधना = by the Creator यििमत ं = whatever is created ु सिरं = stable ु भोगातरभतरलाः ूाणाः णंिसनः ु ोकाेव िदनािन यौवनसखू ितः िूयास ु िता । ु बधा ु बोधका तंसारमसारमेव िनिखलं बा ् ३४॥ ु शलेन मनसा यः समाधीयताम ॥ लोकानमहपे Sensual pleasures are transient like the breaking of high waves. Life can end in a moment. Youthful cheerfulness in infatuation lasts only a few days. Wise teachers, having realised that the whole revolving wheel of life is lacking in true worth, strive to achieve equanimity for the benefit of the people. भोगाः = enjoyments तु = high तर = waves भ = broken तरलाः = unstable ूाणाः = life ण = moment ंिसनः = destroyed ोकाेव = few, indeed िदनािन = days यौवन = youth ु सखू ितः = buoyancy of happiness िूयास ु = loved ones िता = stays तत ् = that संसारं = wheel of existence असारं = that wheel of life, with no substance 37 ् ॥ वैराय शतकम ॥ 38 एव = verily िनिखलं = all ु = knowing बा ु = wise ones बधा बोधका = preachers लोक = humanity ु = benefit अनमह पेशलेन = motivated for मनसा = in their minds यः = effort समाधीयतां = to attain equanimity भोगा मेघिवतानमिवलसौदािमनीचला आयवु ायिु वघितापटलीलीनावु रु म ।् ु तािमाकल िु त ं लोला यौवनलालसानभृ ु िवधं बधाः ु ॥ ३५॥ ु बिं योगे ध ैयसमािधिससलभे Sensual pleasures are as fickle as the flash of lightning in the clouds. Life can collpse as easily as the drop of water on the edge of a lotus leaf swayed by the wind. Fickle are the longings in youth. Youthful beauty lasts a few days. Riches are as short-lived as thoughts. The successive enjoyments are like autumnal lightning flashes. The beloved’s embrace round the neck lasts only a moment. Lovingly tie your mind to Brahman to overcome the fear of crossing the ocean of cycles of births and deaths. आयःु = life कोल = big wave लोलं = changing 39 ् ॥ वैराय शतकम ॥ 40 कितपय = a few िदवस = days ाियनी = lasts यौवन = youth ौीः = beauty अथाः = wealth सका = transient as thought घनसमय = autumnal तिडत ् = lightning िवॅमा = occasional flashes भोगपूगाः = whole series of enjoyments कठाेष = aroun the neck उपगूढं = embrace तदिप = yet च = and न = not िचरं = long यत ् = which िूयािभः = by the loved ones ूणीतं = given brahmaNi in Brahman आस = engrossed िचा = mind भवत = your भव = existence भय = fear अोिध = ocean पारं = beyond तरीत ं ु = to cross over ु ीयते गभवासे कृ े णामेमे िनयिमततनिभः काािवेषःखितकरिवषमो यौवने चोपभोगः । वामाीणामवािवहिसतवसितवृ।भावोऽसाधःु ् ३७॥ ु वदत यिद सखं ु मि िकित ॥ संसारे रे मना ् ॥ वैराय शतकम ॥ Life in the womb involves lying in discomfort amidst unclean surroundings, with the limbs confined. Enjoyments in youth are vitiated by intense sorrow when separated from the beloved. Even old age incurs contempt and derision of women. Oh, men! say, is there even a trace of happiness in such a life? कृ े ण = with difficulty अमे = impure matter मे = amidst ु िनयिमततनिभः = with the body cramped ीयते = resides गभवासे = in the womb काा = wife िवेष = separation ःख = sorrow ितकर = misfortune िवषमः = difficult यौवने = in youth च = and उपभोगः = enjoyment वामाीणां = of women अवा = contempt िवहिसतवसितः = laughing वृ = old भावः = emotion अिप = even असाधःु = undesirable संसारे = in the wheel of life रे = oh! ु = men मना वदत = say यिद = when ु = happiness सखं 41 ् ॥ वैराय शतकम ॥ 42 ं = a little अिप = even अि = exists िकित ् = small ायीव ितित जरा पिरतजयि रोगा शऽव इव ूहरि देहम ।् आयःु पिरॐवित िभघटािदवाो ् ३८॥ लोकथािहतमाचरतीित िचऽम ॥ Like a tigress, fearsome is old age. Illnesses attack the body like enemies. Life flows like water from a leaky vessel. Yet, is it not a wonder that man engages in actions not conducive to wellbeing? ायीव = like a tigress ितित = stands जरा = old age पिरतजयि = frightens रोगाः = diseases च = and शऽव = enemies इव = like ूहरि = attack देहं = body आयःु = life पिरॐवित = flows िभ = broken घटात ् = pot इव = as if अः = water लोकः = people तथािप = even then अिहतं = wicked आचरतीित = perform िचऽं = wonderful ् ॥ वैराय शतकम ॥ भोगा भरु वृयो बिवधा ैरेव चायं भवः तेह कृ ते पिरॅमत रे लोकाः कृ तं चेित ैः । आशापाशशतोपशाििवशदं चेतः समाधीयतां कामोिवशाधामिन यिद ौेयमचः ॥ ३९॥ Varied and transient pleasures make up this life. Then why do you wander here exerting yourself incessantly? Nor, even in our dreams, have we embraced a woman with full-grown breasts. Those with whom we grew up have also become parts of memory only. Half of it is spent in the darkness of nights. Of the remaining half, half is spent in childhood and old age; and the rest illnesses, bereavements, and vexatious service of others. You are famous by your wealth; our successes are broadcast in all directions by the learned. Thus, there is a great difference between us regarding honor and wealth. You are brave; we are ever skilful in subduing the pride of debaters. The rich serve you; we are served by those who would study scriptures to purify the mind. He whose desires are numerous is indded poor. If contentment is in the mind, then who is rich or poor? वयं = we इह = here 59 ् ॥ वैराय शतकम ॥ 60 पिरतु ा = satisfied वलैः = tree-bark as clothes ं = you कू लैः = rich dresses सम = similar इव = as if पिरतोषः = satisfaction िनिवशषे ः = no difference िवशेषः = difference स = he त ु = indeed भवत ु = is दिरिः = poor तृा = desire िवशाला = great मनिस = in mind च = and पिरतु े = contented कोऽथ वाः = who rich, who दिरिः = poor फलमलमशनाय ा पानाय तोयं िितरिप शयनाथ वाससे वलं च । ु नवधनमधपानॅासव ियाणां ् ५४॥ ु ं ु नोहे जनानाम ॥ अिवनयमनम Enough for us are fruits for food, tasty water to drink, the earth for a bed, and tree-barks for dress. I have no taste for the immodesty of the wicked, deluded by drinking the wine of wealth. फलमलमशनाय = fruits to eat ा = tasteful पानाय = to drink तोयं = water िितरिप = also earth ् ॥ वैराय शतकम ॥ शयनाथ = to sleep on वाससे = to dress वलं = tree-barks च = and नव = new धन = riches ु मधपान =drinking intoxicant wine ॅा =deluded सवियाणां = all senses अिवनयं = disrespect ु ं ु = to approve अनम न = not उहे = enthused जनानां = of the wicked अशीमिह वयं िभामाशावासो वसीमिह । शयीमिह महीपृ े कुवमिह िकमीरैः ॥ ५५॥ We shall eat from the begging of alms; we shall wear the sky for clothing; lie down on the earth for a bed; why bother with the rich? अशीमिह = let us eat वयं = we िभां = alms आशावासः = the sky for clothing वसीमिह = let us dress शयीमिह = let us sleep महीपृ े = on the earth कुवमिह = shall we have to do िकं = what ईरैः = with the rich न नटा न िवटा न गायका ु न च सेतरवादचवः । नृपमीितमु ऽ के वयं नभारानिमता न योिषतः ॥ ५६॥ 61 ् ॥ वैराय शतकम ॥ 62 We are not actors, nor jesters, nor singers, nor experts in debating in court, nor courtesans, to wish to meet the king. न = not नटा = actors न = not िवटा = jesters न = not गायका = singers न = not च = and ु सेतरवादचवः = experts in disputations नृप ं = king ईित ं ु = seeing अऽ = here के = who वयं = we नभारानिमता = seductive mistresses न = not योिषतः = desiring ु ु े गिनतं परा िवपलदय ैरीशैरत ं चा ैिविज तृण ं यथा । िवधृतमपरैद ु ु भते इह भवनाे धीरातदु श ु ं ु ां क एष मदरः ॥ ५७॥ कितपयपराे पस In days of yore, these kingdoms were created by kings with generous hearts, ruled by others, and conquered or squandered like straw by still others. Some heroes even now enjoy everything in the universe. Even the whole of it is but an atom. Hosts of kings enjoy it after fighting for it a hundred times. With their paltry and mean minds they may or do give; for it is not strange to them. Men engrossed in protecting their own lives, flatter others showing immoderate pride, to what purpose? स = he जातः = born कः = =3Dwho अिप = even आसीत ् = placed ु = by Shiva(enemy of Madana/Cupid) मदनिरपणा मूि = on the head धवलं = white कपालं = skull य = whose उ ैः = high िविनिहतं = held अलारिवधये = like an ornament नृिभः = by men ् ॥ वैराय शतकम ॥ ूाण = life ऽाण = limb ूवण = preserving मितिभः = by those who think of कै िद ् = by them ु = nowadays अधना नमिः = adored कः = who ं ु ां = person पस अयं = this ु = incomparable अतल दप = pride र =fever भरः = afflicted with ७ मनःसोधनिनयमनम ।् परेषां चेतांिस ूितिदवसमारा बधा ूसादं िकं न ेत ं ु िवशिस दय े शकिलतम ।् ूसे ः यमिु दतिचामिणगणो ु िविवः सः िकमिभलिषतं पित न ते ॥ ६१॥ Control of Mind by Wisdom: Winning the favors of others is hard; why then does your heart seek to appease the minds of others? Why do you wander about in vain? Rest somewhere. Whatever happens is bound to happen, of itself, not otherwise. Take to the path of supreme welfare that can, in a moment, remove all sorrows. Reach the state of your True Self. Abandon the wavelike agitation and change. Situate yourself on the banks of the celestial river, Ganga. Even stomping on the enemies’ heads with one’s feet? Or if riches bought friends? Or even if one’s body lasts till the end of time? ूााः = acquired िौयः = prosperity सकल = all काम = desire धाः = milked ततः िकं = what then ं = placed पदं = foot िशरिस = on the head िविषतां = of the enemies ततः िकं = what then सािदताः = bringing ूणियनः = friends िवभवैः = by wealth ततः िकं = what then किताः = last till end of world ु तां = embodied beings तनभृ तनवः = bodies ततः िकं = what then भिभव े मरणजभयं िदं ेहो न बषु ु न मथजा िवकाराः । संसगदोषरिहता िवजना वनाा ् ६८॥ वैरायमि िकिमतः परमथ नीयम ॥ If there be devotion in the heart and the fear of death and birth, no ties ् ॥ वैराय शतकम ॥ 75 to family, nor agitation by passions; when there is the solitude of uninhabited forests, and dispassion, what gain can be better than this? भिः = devotion भवे = in life मरण = death ज = birth भयं = fear िदं = in the heart ेहः = attachment न = not बषु ु = towards kinspeople न = not मथजा = born of lust िवकाराः = passions संसग = company दोष = fault रिहता = devoid िवजना = without people वनाा = in forest वैरायं = dispassion अि = is िकं = what इतः = beyond this परमथ नीयं = of supreme value तादनमजरं परमं िवकािस त िचय िकमेिभरसिक ैः । ु ु यानषिण इमे भवनािधपभोगादयः कृ पणलोकमता भवि ॥ ६९॥ Therefore, meditate on the infinite, ageless, supreme, luminous Reality. Why these false thoghts about the unreal? The sovereignty over the world, with its accompanying pleasures, will appear as the desires ् ॥ वैराय शतकम ॥ 76 of the petty-minded when compared to the pursuit of Reality. ताद ् = therefore अनं = infinite अजरं = ageless परमं = supreme िवकािस = effulgent तद ् = that ॄ = Reality िचय = meditate िकं = what एिभः = by these असद ् = unreal िवक ैः = mental agitation य = whose ु अनषिणः = associating इमे = these ु = world भवन अिधप = sovereignty भोगादयः = such enjoyments कृ पणलोकमता = desires of pitiable men भवि = become पातलमािवशिस यािस नभो िवल िदडलं ॅमिस मानस चापलेन । ॅाािप जात ु िवमलं कथमानीनं न ॄ संरिस िनवृि तमेिश येन ॥ ७०॥ With such a fickle mind, you will enter the nether worlds one moment, fly to the limits of the sky, or wander in all directions. Discrimination of the Immutable from the Mutable: Of what use is the study of Vedas, scriptures, mythology, the extensive codes, and the bewildering labyrinth of rituals which promise a passage to heaven, which is but a hamlet of hutments? The only way to destroy the burden of life’s sorrows like the apocalyptic fire, is that which lets you enter the beatitude of self-ralisation. All else is but bartering 77 ् ॥ वैराय शतकम ॥ 78 for profit! िन = immutable अिन = mutable व ु = essence िवचारः = discrimination िकं = how much वेदःै = by vedas ृितिभः = by smritis ु पराण = puranas पठन ैः = by studying शा ैः = by shastras महािवरैः = of immense ग = heaven माम = village कुटी = hut िनवास = resting place फलदैः = resulting from कमिबयािवभूमःै = by mazes of ceremonials ु ा = freeing म एकं = one भव = life cycles ःख = sorrow भार = burden रचना = condition िवंस = destruction काल = time अनलं = fire ा = one’s own Self अन = bliss पद = place ूवेश = entrance कलनं = way शेष ैः = everything else विणवृििभः = traders’ attitude यतो मेः ौीमािपतित यगु ाािविलतः ु ु ि ूचरमकरमाहिनलयाः समिु ा श । धरा गं धरिणधरपादैरिप धृता ् ॥ वैराय शतकम ॥ शरीरे का वाता किरकलभकणामचपले ॥ ७२॥ When the majestic Meru moutain collapses in the fire of the cosmic conflagration; when the oceans, in which reside numerous sharks and other aquatic animals, dry up; when the earth, even though supported by mountains, meets its end; what can you say about this body, which is only as steady as the ear-tip of a baby elephant! यतः = from where मेः = mount Meru ौीमान ् = of great fame िनपतित = falls down यगु ा = at the end of a time cycle अि = fire विलतः = surrounded by समिु ा = seas ु ि = dry up श ूचरु =replete मकर = crocodiles माह = sharks िनलयाः = homes धरा = earth गित = goes अं = end धरिण = earth धर = holding पादैः = by the feet अिप = also धृता = held शरीरे = body का = what वाता = news किरकलभ = young elephant 79 ् ॥ वैराय शतकम ॥ 80 कण = ear अम = tip चपले = unsteady गाऽं सिचतं गितिवगिलता ॅा च दाविल।िन ँयित वधत े बिधरता वं च लालायते । ु षू ते वां नािियते च बावजनो भाया न शौ ु ु हा कं पष जीणवयसः पऽोऽिमऽायते ॥ ७३॥ With feeble limbs, unsteady movements, teeth that have fallen off, poor eye-sight, worsening deafness, drooling mouth,; with relatives disregarding what you say, the wife offering no help, the son turning hostile, such, alas! are the miseries of senility. गाऽं = limbs सिचतं = shrivel गितः = walking िवगिलता = unsteady ॅा = useless च = and दाविलः = rows of teeth ।िः = eyesight नँयित = lost वधत े = increases बिधरता = deafness वं = mouth च = and लालायते = slobbers वां = speech न = not अिियते = valued च = and बावजनः = relatives भाया = wife न = not ् ॥ वैराय शतकम ॥ ु षू ते = offer service शौ हा = alas कं = misery ु पष = man’s जीण = old वयसः = in years ु = son पऽः अिप = also अिमऽायते = becomes unfriendly वण िसतं झिटित वी िशरोहाणां ु सम ।् ानं जरा पिरभव तदा पमां आरोिपतािशतकं पिर याि चडालकू पिमव रतरं तयः ॥ ७४॥ When hair grows white on a man’s head, indicating the disconcert of senility, young women run away from him, like the outcastes’ well encircled with bones! वण = color िसतं = white झिटित = instantly वी = seeing िशरोहाणां = on the head ानं = condition जरा = old age पिरभव = caused by तदा = then ु स ं = man’s पमां आरोिपत = characterised by अि = bones शतकं = hundreds पिर = abandoning याि = go चडाल = least respected कू पं = well 81 ् ॥ वैराय शतकम ॥ 82 इव = as if रतरं = far away तयः = youthful याविमदं शरीरमजं यावरा रतो यावेियशिरूितहता यावयो नायषु ः । आौेयिस तावदेव िवषा कायः ूयो महान ् ु सीे भवने त ु कू पखननं ूमः कीशः ॥ ७५॥ As long as this body is healthy and free of infirmity, as long as senility is distant, as long as the faculties have not lost their vigor, as long as life is not enfeebled, till then should the wise ones make great efforts to reach the supreme goal of life. For what is the use of digging a well when the house is on fire? यावत ् = as long as ं = free from disease इदं = this शरीरं = body अजं = decrepitude यावत ् = as long as जरा = old age रतः = far off यावत ् =as long as च = and इिय = organs शिः = strength अूितहता = unaffected यावत ् = so long as यः = decay न = not अयषु ः = life आौेयिस = for one’s own supreme welfare तावत ् = till then ् ॥ वैराय शतकम ॥ एव = alone िवषा = wise कायः = deeds ूयः = efforts महान ् = great सीे = on fire भवने = house त ु = indeed कू प = well खननं = digging ु ूमः = setting about कीशः = what avails ु तपः सः िकमिधिनवसामः सरनद ु गणोदाराारान तु पिरचरामः सिवनयम ।् िपबामः शाौघानतु िविवधकाामृतरसान ् न िवः िकं कुमः कितपयिनमेषायिु ष जन े ॥ ७६॥ Shall we live ascetically on the banks of the heavenly river, or serve humbly our virtuous wives? Shall we drink at the streams of scriptures or the nectarine poetry? With a life-span of a few eye-winks, we do not know what action to take! तपः = austerities सः = practising िकं = what अिधिनवसामः = live ु सरनद = heavenly river ् = virtuous ु गणोदारान दारानतु = wives पिरचरामः = serve सिवनयं = humbly िपबामः = drink शाौघानतु = currents of scripture 83 ् ॥ वैराय शतकम ॥ 84 िविवध = varied का = poetry अमृत = nectar रसान ् = essence न = not िवः = know िकं = what कुमः = do कितपय = few िनमेष = twinkling of an eye अयिु ष = longevity जन े = people ु रारााामी तरु गचलिचाः िितभजो ु वयं च ूलेाः समहित फले बमनसः । ु जरा देहं मृहरित दियतं जीिवतिमदं सखे नाे यो जगित िवषोऽऽ तपसः ॥ ७७॥ Thease earthly rulers are difficult to please and fickle-minded like the horse, and we have strong desires, and intent on huge gains. Senility gnaws away the body and death steals this dear life. Oh Friend! for the wise nothing is as salutary as austerities. रारााः = hard to please च = and अमी = these तरु ग = horse चलिचाः = restless minds ु = rulers og the earth िितभजः वयं = we च = and ूलेाः = ambitious ु = vast समहित फले = gain ् ॥ वैराय शतकम ॥ बमनसः = mind bent on जरा = old age देहं = body मृःु = death हरित = takes away दियतं = dear जीिवतं = life इदं = this सखे = oh, friend न = not अत ् = other लेयः = good जगित = in the world िवषः् = wise अऽ = except तपसः = austerities ु थ ूयातेऽिथ िन मान े ाियिन खिडते च वसिन ु े गते पिरजने ने शन ैयवने । ीणे बजन ु ं के वलमेतदेव सिधयां ु य युकापयः् ७८॥ पूतमाविगरीकरतटीकुे िनवासः िचत ॥ When honor declines, riches squandered away, flatterers depart, the circle of friends dwindles, attendants leave, and slowly the youth is spent, the wise have only one proper way left to follow—make a home somewhere on the side of a valley in the Himalayas, whose rocks have been made holy by the water of the Ganges. मान े = honor ाियिन = faded खिडते = ruined च = and ु = wealth वसिन 85 ् ॥ वैराय शतकम ॥ 86 थ = wasted ूयाते =gone अिथ िन = favors ीणे = dwindled ु े = friends बजन गते = departed पिरजने = dependents ने = destroyed शन ैः = slowly यौवने = youth ु ं = proper य ु सिधयां = wise यत ् = which जुका = Ganga river (daughter of Janhu) पयः = water पूतमाव = purigied िगरी = chief among mountains (Himalaya) कर = valley तटी = on the side कुे = grove िनवासः = shelter िचत ् = somewhere रामरीचयृणवती रा वनाःली ु ु काेष ु राः कथाः । रं साधसमागमावतस खं ु ं अिबतरलं रं िूयाया मख ु ॥ ७९॥ सव रमिनतामपु गते िचे न िकिनः Enchanting are the moonbeams and the verdant outskirts of the forest; delightful is the company of the wise, and the poetry of stories; charming is the beloved’s face gleaming in tears of indignation; all is fascinating, except when the mind realises the transience of it all. राः = delightful ् ॥ वैराय शतकम ॥ च = moon मरीचयः = rays तृणवती = grassy plots रा = delightful वनाःली = in the forests रं = delightful साध ु = saint समागमावत = company of ु = joy सखं काेष ु = in poetry राः = delightful कथाः = stories कोप = anger उपािहत = covered बा = water (tears) िब = drops तरलं = swimming रं = delightful िूयाया = of the beloved ु ं = face मख सव = all रं = delightful अिनतां = evanescent उपगते = gone िचे = in the mind न = not िकित ् = nothing ु = again पनः रं ह तलं न िकं वसतये ौं न गेयािदकं ु न ैवािधकूीतये । िकं वा ूाणसमासमागमसखं िक ु ॅापतपपवनालोलदीपारायाचलमाकल सकलं सो वनां गताः ॥ ८०॥ Living in a palace is pleasant, is it not? Or listening to music with 87 88 ् ॥ वैराय शतकम ॥ its accompaniments? or the company of women, as dear as life? But wise persons have taken to forest life, having realised that these are as fickle as the shadow of a flickering flame on the fluttering wings of a delirious moth. रं = pleasurable ह तलं = palace न = not िकं = is it वसतये = to live ौं = pleasant to listen to न = not गेयािदकं = music with accompaniments िकं = is it वा = or ूाण = life ु = joy of woan’s company समासमागमसखं न = no एव = in fact अिधक = much ूीतये = pleasing िक ु = but ॅा = hovering पत = moth प = wing पवन = wind ालोल = shaken दीपारत ् = flame of a lamp छाया = shadow चलं = unstable आकल = having understood सकलं = all सः = wise ones वनां = to the forest ् ॥ वैराय शतकम ॥ गताः = gone ९ िशवाचनम ।् ु आसंसारािभवनिमदं िचतां तात ताैवााकं नयनपदव ौोऽमाग गतो वा । योऽयं धे िवषयकिरणीगाढगूढािभमान् ८१॥ ीबाःकरणकिरणः संयमानायलीलाम ॥ 9 Worship of Shiva My son! Since creation, in our search in all the three worlds, we have not seen nor heard anything that can act like a trap to control the mind, deeply and inexplicably infatuated with sensuality, like an elephant wildly excited by the female elephant. िशवाचन ं = worship of Shiva आसंसारात ् = from the very beginning of creation ु = three worlds िऽभवनं इदं = this िचतां = searching तात = oh dear! ताक ् = like that न = not एव =even अाकं = our नयनपदव = in sight ौोऽमाग = in hearing गतः = gone वा = or यः = who अयं = this धे = gives िवषयकिरणी = arousing sensuality गाढगूढ = mysterious, and deep अिभमान = pride 89 ् ॥ वैराय शतकम ॥ 90 ीब = enraged अःकरणकिरणः = infatuating संयम = control आनाय = elephant trap लीलां = play यदेतं िवहरणमकाप यमशनं सहायः संवासः ौतु मपु शमैकोतफलम ।् मनो मं बिहरिप िचरािप िवमृशन ् न जान े क ैष पिरणितदार तपसः ॥ ८२॥ The vows of roaming freely, eating pure food, associating with holy persons, and cultivating spiritual wisdom, yields only the fruit of a pieceful mind. Even after prolonged contemplation, I fail to understand that such lofty austerities can control the mind and lead it to peace. यत ् = which एतत ् = this ं = one’s own free will िवहरणं = wandering अकाप यं = without meanness अशनं = eating सह = with अयः = holy संवासः = company ौतु ं = vedic wisdom उपशम = cessation of worries एकोत = sole vow फलं = result मनः = mind मं = restrained बिहः = external अिप = also ् ॥ वैराय शतकम ॥ िचर = long time अिप = also िवमृशन ् = thoughtfully न = not जान े = know क = whose एष = this पिरणितः = cosummation उदार = noble तपसः = austerities जीणा एव मनोरथा दये यातं च तौवनं ु ु ैिवना । हाेष ु गणा वफलतां याता गण ु ं सहसापु ैित बलवाालः कृ ताोऽमी िकं य ु ाि नाा गितः ॥ ८३॥ हा ातं मदनाकाियगु लं म The fantasies of the heart are exhausted,; youth has also left the body. Alas! Virtues have proven barren for lack of discriminating admirers. The mighty, unforgiving, all-consuming Death is gathering speed. What is the proper action? Alas! there is no way other than to surrender oneself at the feet if Shiva. जीणा = worn out एव = verily मनोरथाः = fantasies च = and दये = in the heart यातं = gone च = and तत ् = that यौवनं = youth ह = alas! अेष ु = in the body 91 ् ॥ वैराय शतकम ॥ 92 ु गणाः = virtues च = and व = barren फलतां = fruit याता = gone ु ैः = those who appreciate virtue गण िवना = without िकं = what ु ं = proper य सहसा = fast अपु ैित = coming near बलवान ् = powerful कालः = time कृ ताः = death अमी = relentless हा = alas! ातं = known मदन = Cupid अक = destroyer अि = foot यगु लं = pair ु ा = freeing म अि = is न = not अा = other गितः = way .83.. महेरे वा जगतामधीरे जनादन े वा जगदरािन । ु दूितपिरि मे न वभे तथािप भिणेशेखरे ॥ ८४॥ Between the great Lord of the universe, Shiva, and the innermost Self of the universe, Vishnu, there is no difference for me. However, my devotion ् ॥ वैराय शतकम ॥ is to Shiva, holding the crescent moon on His head. महेरे = Shiva वा = or जगतां = of the universe अधीरे = Lord जनादन े = Vishnu वा = or जगत ् = universe अरािन = innermost soul न = not ु द = essential difference वभे ूितपिः = admission अि = is मे = my तथािप = still भिः = devotion तणे = crescent moon शेखरे = on the crown ु े ुरारोाधविलततले ािप पिलन ु सखासीनाः शािनष ु रजनीष ु ुसिरतः । ु भवाभोगोिाः िशव िशव िशवेवचसः ् ८५॥ कदा याामोऽगतबलबााकुलदशाम ॥ Sitting peacefully on the banks of the celestial river, in the bright scattered glow of the moonlight, when silence pervades the nights,distressed by the thoughts of birth and death, when shall we roar the names of Shiva, and reach the state of holding back tears of ecstasy? ुरार = bright diffused ोा = moonlight धविलततले = white glow ािप = somewhere ु े = banks पिलन 93 ् ॥ वैराय शतकम ॥ 94 ु सखासीनाः = seated happily शािनष ु = soundless silence रजनीष ु = at night ुसिरतः = heavenly river भवाभोग = miseries of birth and death उिाः = fearful िशव िशव िशव = repeatedly calling Shiva इित = thus उ = loud वचसः = voice कदा = when याामः = attain अगत = internal बल = copious बा = tears आकुल = ecstasy दशां = condition िवतीण सव े तणकणापूण दयाः ु रः संसारे िवगणपिरणामां िविधगितम ।् ु वयं पयारये पिरणतशरिकरणाः िऽयामा न ेामो हरचरणिच ैकशरणाः ॥ ८६॥ Forsaking all, with the heart full of the most tender compassion, recalling the sorrowful fate, let us spend the nights in holy forests, in the glow of the autumnal moonbeams, meditating on Siva’s feet, our sole shelter. िवतीण = giving away सव े = all तण =tender कणा = compassion पूण = filled with दयाः = heart रः = remembering ् ॥ वैराय शतकम ॥ संसारे = cycles of creation and dissolution ु = undesirable िवगण पिरणामां = effects िविधगितं = destiny वयं = we ु = holy पय अरये = forest पिरणत = full शरत ् = autumnal च = moon िकरणाः = rays/beams िऽयामा = nights नेामः = spend हर = Shiva चरण = feet िचा = meditation एक = only शरणाः = refuge कदा वाराणाममरतिटनीरोधिस वसन ् ु ।् वसानः कौपीनं िशरिस िनदधानोऽिलपटम ु अये गौरीनाथ िऽपरहरशो िऽनयन ् ८७॥ ूसीदेित बोशििमषिमव नेािम िदवसान ॥ When shall I spend my momentary life on the banks of the heavenly river in Varanasi, wearing just a loin-cloth, holding my folded hands over my head, and weeping loudly, ᳚ Oh! Lord of Gauri! Conqueror of the demon Tripura! Ever auspicious and having the third eye (of the Supreme Light)! Cupid’s Enemy! when will you free me with your grace, from the sorrow of having served the rich? ाा = after bathing ् ॥ वैराय शतकम ॥ गाैः = by Ganges पयोिभः = waters शिु च = pure कुसमु = flowers फलः = fruits अचिया = offering िवभः = o Lord! ां = to you ेय े = concentrating ानं = mind िनवेँय = िितधर = mountain कुहर = cave माव = stony पयमूले = by the bed आारामः = blissful in the Self फलाशी = eating fruits गु = teacher वचन = words रतः = devoted to त ् = your ूसादात ् = grace रारे = O Thou Enemy of Cupid! ःखं = sorrow मोे = freedom कदा = when अहं = I स = with मकर = shark चरणे = feet [ ᳚a shark on the feet᳚ (sign of uncommon prosperity)] पिं ु स = man सेवा = service ु ं = released सम एकाकी िनःृहः शाः पािणपाऽो िदगरः । 97 ् ॥ वैराय शतकम ॥ 98 नमा ॥ ८९॥ कदा शो भिवािम कमिनमूल When shall I be free from the roots of action, leading a life of solitude, dispassion, serenity, with my hands serving as a bowl, and the sky for clothing? एकाकी = alone िनःृहः = free from desire शाः = peaceful पािण = hand पाऽः = vessel िदगरः = naked शो = O Shiva! भिवािम = will become कम = action न = root out िनमूल मः = capable ु पािणं पाऽयतां िनसगशिु चना भ ैेण सतां ् यऽ ािप िनषीदतां बतृण ं िवं मु ः पँयताम ॥ अागीऽिप तनोरखडपरमानावबोधृशां ् ९०॥ ु अा कोऽिप िशवूसादसलभः सते योिगनाम ॥ Using the hands as a bowl, contented with the naturally pure food from alms, resting in any place, constantly viewing the world to be worth no more than a blade of grass, experiencing uninterrupted supreme joy even before the body falls, for such aspirants alone the grace of Shiva makes the path of liberation easy of attainment. पािणं = hand पाऽयतां = used like a vessel िनसग = nature शिु चना = pure ् ॥ वैराय शतकम ॥ भ ैेण = by begging alms ु सतां = contented यऽ = where ािप = anywhere िनषीदतां = resting बतृण ं = almost a blade of grass िवं = world मु ः = constantly पँयतां = seeing अागे = giving up अिप = even तनोः = of the body अखड = uninterrupted परम = supreme अन = bliss अवबोधृशां = knowledge अा = path कः = who अिप = even िशवूसाद = grace of Shiva ु सलभः = easy सते = attain योिगनां = of yogis १० अवधूतचया । ु कौपीनं शतखडजजरतरं का पनाशी न ैिं िनरपेभ ैमशनं िनिा ँमशान े वन े । ातेण िनरश ं िवहरणं ां ूशां सदा ् ९१॥ ैय योगमहोवेऽिप च यिद ऽैलोराेन िकम ॥ The Way of Life of a Self-Realised Ascetic: Wearing a loincloth worn-out and tattered into a hundred rags, with a wrap-around in similar condition, free from anxiety, eating food from alms begged without any expectations, 99 100 ् ॥ वैराय शतकम ॥ sleeping in a forest or a cremation-ground, roaming freely without hindrance, ever indrawn and calm, and also established in the great joy of Divine union, ——-for such a one even sovereignty of the three worlds is beneath comparison. अवधूत = a self-realised ascetic with the highest spiritual freedom चया = the way of life कौपीनं = loin cloth शत = hundred खड = torn जजरतरं = much worn out का = rag ु = again पनः ताशी = of the same condition न ैिं = free from all diturbing thoughts िनरपे = without expectation भ ैं = food got by begging अशनं = eating िनिा = sleep ँमशान े = in a cremation ground वन े = in a forest ातेण = freely िनरश ं = without hindrance िवहरणं = wandering ां = one’s mind ूशां = very peaceful सदा = always ैय = steadfastness योग = yoga महोवे = festive joy अिप = also च = and ् ॥ वैराय शतकम ॥ 101 यिद = when ऽैलो = three worlds राेन = by sovereignty िकं = what ॄाडं मडलीमाऽं िकं लोभाय मनिनः । ु ो न ख जायते ॥ ९२॥ शफरीुिरतेनािः Will the wise ones show greed for this universe, which is but a mere mirage? Indeed, the ocean is not agitated by the movements of a fish! ॄाडं = universe मडली = reflection माऽं = mere िकं = what लोभाय = for greed मनिनः = wise शफरी = a small fish ुिरतेन = by movement अिः = ocean ु ः = agitated न = not ख = indeed जायते = become मातलि भज किदपरं मािणी मा भूः भोगेष ु ृहयालवव वशे का िनःृहाणामिस । ु सःूतपलाशपऽपिटकापाऽे पिवऽीकृ त ैु व सित वयं वृिं समीहामहे ॥ ९३॥ िभाविभरे Oh Mother LakShmi! devote yourself to someone else! Do not long for me! Those who covet pleasures are under your sway; what are you to us who are dispassionate? Now, we want to subsist on alms gathered and purified in a bowl instantly made from the leaves of Palasa tree. ् ॥ वैराय शतकम ॥ 102 मातः = mother लि = O Laxmi! भज = serve कित ् = someone अपरं = else मत ् = me कािणी = long for मा = do not = indeed भू = earthly भोगेष ु = in enjoyments ृहयालवः = desiring तव = your वशे = captive का = what िनःृहाणां = free from desires अिस = are सः = immediately ूत = put together पलाश = palAsha पऽ = leaf ु पिटका = ?? पाऽे = vessel पिवऽीकृ त ैः = sanctified ु िभाविभः = articles obtained by begging एव = only सित = in the right way वयं = we वृिं = attitude समीहामहे = wish ु ु पु धानं भजलता महाशा पृी िवपलम िवतानं चाकाशं जनमनकूु लोऽयमिनलः । शरो दीपो िवरितविनतासमिु दतः ु ितनृ।प इव ॥ ९४॥ ु शाः शेत े मिु नरतनभू सखी ् ॥ वैराय शतकम ॥ 103 With the earth for a bed, the arms for a large pillow, the sky for a roof, the gentle breeze for a fan, the autumnal moon for a lamp, renunciation as conjugal bliss, the sage sleeps in contentment and tranquillity, like a sovereign of immense glory. महा = great शा = bed पृी = earth ु = ample िवपलं उपधानं = pillow ु भजलता = arms िवतानं = canopy च = and अकाशं = sky जनं = fan अनकूु लः = pleasant अयं = this अिनलः = breeze शरत ् = autumn चः = moon दीपः = light िवरित = abnegation विनता = wife सं = company उिदतः = elevated (rejoicing) ु = blissful सखी शाः = peaceful शेत े = sleeps मिु नः = sage अतन ु = not small (undiminished) भूितः = glory नृप = king इव = as if ् ॥ वैराय शतकम ॥ 104 िभाशी जनमसरिहतः ायचेः सदा हानादानिवरमागिनरतः किपी ितः । राकीणिवशीणजीणवसनः साकासनो ु िनमानो िनरह ितः शमसखाभोग ैकबृहः ॥ ९५॥ Living on alms, unattached to the company of people, ever acting with total freedom, devoted to the path of dispassion towards the exchange of wealth, such a one is a true ascetic. Wearing worn-out rags thrown in the streets, using a blanket received by chance for a seat, without pride or selfishness, the ascetic wishes solely for the joy of the controlled mind. िभाशी = eating alms जनम = society सरिहतः = unattached ायचेः = free in actions (independent) सदा = always हानादान = give and take िवर = indifferent माग = path िनरतः = pursuing कित ् = who but तपी = engaged in austerities ितः = living रा = in the streets कीण = thrown away िवशीण = shattered जीण = worn out वसनः = garment सा = gotten by chance क = blanket असनः = seat िनमानः = without pride ् ॥ वैराय शतकम ॥ 105 िनरह ितः = without egoism शम = self-control ु सखाभोग = enjoying the happiness एकब = bound by only one ृहः = desiring चडालः िकमयं िजाितरथवा शूिोऽथ िकं तापसः िकं वा तिववेकपेशलमितयगीरः कोऽिप िकम ।् ु ु रैराभामाणा जन ैः इिवकजम ख न बुाः पिथ न ैव तु मनसो याि यं योिगनः ॥ ९६॥ ᳚Is this person an outcaste? or a twice-born? or a sudra? or an ascetic? or else some master yogi with the mind filled with philosophical discernment? ᳚ When people address the ascetic thus, doubting and debating garrulously, the Yogis themselves walk awy, neither angry nor pleased. चडालः = outcaste िकं = what अयं = this िजाितः = twice-born (initiated in scriptures) अथवा = or शूिः = servant अथ = thus िकं = what तापसः = ascetic िकं = what वा = or त = truth िववेक = discrimination पेशल = expert मित = mind यगीरः = supreme yogi kaH - who अिप = also ् ॥ वैराय शतकम ॥ 106 िकं = what इित = thus उ = arising िवक = doubt ज = argumentative ु रैः = garrulously मख आभामाणा = accosted जन ैः = by people बुाः = angry पिथ = on the way न = not एव = only तु = pleased मनसः = mind याि = go यं = own way योिगनः = yogis िहंसाशूमयलमशनं धाऽा मितं ु लीशाियनः । ु ालानां पशवृणारभज ाः संसाराणवलनमिधयां वृिः कृ ता सा नृणां ु ॥ ९७॥ तामेषयतां ूयाि सततं सव समािं गणाः The creator has provided for serpents air as food, got without violence or effort. Beasts are satisfied with eating sprouting grass and laying on the ground. Likewise, for people intellectually able enough to cross the sea of birth-death cycles, some such means of living has been created. Those who seek this are able to bring to final cessation the play of their natural attributes. िहंसाशू ं = without killing अय = without effort लं = obtainable अशनं = for eating ् ॥ वैराय शतकम ॥ 107 धाऽा = by the Creator मत ् = air कितं = provided ालानां = vicious पशवः = beasts तृण = grass ु = feeding on sprouts अरभजः तु ाः = contented लीशाियनः = lying on ground संसार = transmigratory life अणव = ocean लनम = capable to cross over िधयां = intelligence वृिः = inclined to कृ ता = made सा = that नृणां = of people तां = to them अेषयतां = seeking ूयाि = go सततं = constantly सव = all समािं = ending ु गणाः = qualities (inertia, activity, and understanding) गातीरे िहमिगिरिशलाबपासन ॄानसनिविधना योगिनिां गत । ु िकं त ैभा ं मम सिदवस ैयऽ ते िनिवशाः कडूये जरठहिरणाः ामे मदीये ॥ ९८॥ Seated in the lotus-posture on a stone in the Himalayas on the banks of the Ganga,; attaining yogic sleep by the practice of meditation on the Supreme Reality; with deer, old with age and free from fear, caressing 108 ् ॥ वैराय शतकम ॥ their bodies against mine——- will such fortune come to me? गातीरे = on the banks of river Ganges िहमिगिर = Himalayas िशला = stone ब = bound/sitting पासन = lotus posture ॄ = transcendent truth ान = meditation असन = practice िविधना = in the prascribed manner योगिनिां = Samadhi (with consciousness of the external world lost) गत = going/falling िकं = what त ैः = by them भां = resulting from मम = my ु सिदवस ैः = happy days यऽ = where ते = they िनिवशाः = fearless कडूये = rub जरठहिरणाः = old deer ां = own bodies अे = body मदीये = my पािणः पाऽं पिवऽं ॅमणपिरगतं भ ैममं िवीण वमाशादशकमचपलं तममवु । येषां िनःसताीकरण पिरणतासोिषणे यि ॥ ९९॥ धाः संदैितकरिनकराः कम िनमूल The hands serving as a sacred bowl, subsisting on the neverdwindling alms obtained while roaming, the vast expanse of the sky serving as ् ॥ वैराय शतकम ॥ 109 a dress, and the earth for a stable, spacious bed—people with such dispassion are blessed indeed, for they have renounced the poverty of attitude seeking mundane pleasures and thus giving up worldly contacts, and inwardly contented in heart fulfilled by accepting solitude, and thus able to uproot all actions ( the roots of future rebirths and deaths). पािणः = hand पाऽं = vessel पिवऽं = pure ॅमण = wandering पिरगतं = obtained भ ैं = alms अं = never running short अं = food िवीण = ample वं = cloth आशा = space दशकं = ten directions अचपलं = fixed तं = bed अं = spacious उव = wide earth येषां = whose िनःसत = without associating अीकरण = absorb पिरणत = matured ा = inwardly सोिषणः = blissful ते = they धाः = blessed सं = forsaking दै = deprivation ितकर = contact ् ॥ वैराय शतकम ॥ 110 िनकराः = best of objects कम = actions यि = root out िनमूल ु मातमिदिन तात मात सखे तेजः सबो जल ॅातम िनब एव भवतामः ूणामािलः । ु वशोपजातसकृु तारुरिमलय ानापासममोहमिहमा लीये परॄिण ॥ १००॥ Oh Mother Earth! Oh Wind, my Father! Oh Fire, my friend! Oh Water, my good relative! Oh Sky, my Brother! With clasped hands this is my concluding salutations to you! My association with you all resulted in an accumulation of scintillating merits, culminating in abundance of pure knowledge, which helped me overcome the marvellous sway of Unreality!
