Hydropower Specialised gear units for hydropower applications Santasalo has been manufacturing gears for the hydropower industry for over 20 years with an installed base in Scandinavia, Central Europe and North America. Santasalo’s product portfolio includes a special gear series for hydropower in the power range of 200-6000 kW. With its specialised design, the hydropower gear series is suitable for all types of turbines independent of the shaft direction. The Santasalo gear units are equipped with axial bearings designed to withstand the axial force from the turbine. The gear units are pressure lubricated and the gear housing is designed to eliminate the requirement for an external oil tank. The new special gear series is designed for the power range of small hydro power stations. The power range is from 200-6000 kW and the speed is 80-350 rpm. The generator speed is 600-1200 rpm and can be used both in 50 Hz and 60 Hz. Project based design, in-depth knowhow and modern manufacturing methods enable us to customise gear solutions to meet the stringent requirements of small hydro power plants with precision Designed to your Specification Santasalo’s gear units for hydropower applications are designed for both horizontal and vertical turbines. The gear units are connected to the foundation with the flange in the upper part of the gear unit where the axial bearing is also placed. This stops the axial force from the turbine acting on other parts of the housing. The gear housing is designed to exclude the need for an external oil tank and is equipped with large inspection covers for efficient service and inspection of the gear unit. The turbine shaft is connected to the gear unit with flange connection, OK coupling or shrink disc. Between the generator and the gear unit, flexible disc or tooth couplings are used. The low speed shaft has a hole inside for the adjustment device of the turbines impeller. The gear housing has a flange for attachment of adjustment device. The gear series has been designed with leading turbine manufacturers for easy installation and maintenance. The gear units are one stage with increasing ratio and helical teeth. The bearings can absorb the axial force of the turbine so there is no need for a separate bearing for the turbine. The force towards the gear is going through the gear housing to the foundation.
