RACING REPORT
A day of doubles
at Tara Raceway
T
raining doubles to Tom Cryer,
Phil Lenehan, Jeff Guy and
Allen Williams, together
with three litter doubles,
highlighted an outstanding
day of greyhound racing at Tara
Raceway on Sunday afternoon.
And it was the Cryer-trained Cryer’s
Ricky that brought up a hat-trick of wins
with an outstanding performance in the
main race of the day – the Easter Gift
over 512 metres.
Quickly away from box two, the son
of Spring Gun and Cryer’s Midget
never looked like being headed when
leading all the way and holding out a
determined Platinum Shen to score by
2.5 lengths in a personal best time of
29.93 seconds.
Trainer Tom Cryer, owner Margaret Cryer and Jason Cryer with Cryer’s Ricky after
winning the Easter Gift on Sunday.
Cryer said that Cryer’s Ricky, winner of last week’s
$3525 feature grade five, would now run in the Kings
division of the Kings v. Queens at Tara Raceway on
Friday. This is another feature that will carry $3525
total prizemoney.
Earlier in the day litter brother Cryer’s Jack created a
huge impression when winning the ClassicBet Open
Maiden over 512 metres.
The brindle dog, which jumped well from box
eight, took the lead going into the back straight
and then proceeded to power away for a 10 length
win over Tekki Will Power in a top maiden time of
30.20 seconds.
For Cryer’s Jack, it was only his fourth race start with
Cryer at one stage doubting whether the 32 kilogram
dog would ever see a race track.
4 Kennel Capers edition025
“He wouldn’t go around the track here after originally
being broken in,” said Cryer, who is based at Apsley. “So
we had him broken in again at a different establishment
and once again he still wouldn’t go around Tara Raceway.
“I always thought he was quicker than Cryer’s Ricky
and Cryer’s Fred so I kept persevering with him. I
guess today’s win vindicates my decision to keep
going with him although he still has a fair way to go to
match his brothers.”

PROJECTS
UPDATE
SCOTT WUCHATSCH
ANGLE PARK SLIPPING TRACK
GAWLER PROJECT COMPLETION
A proposal regarding the construction of a slipping track
at Angle Park was presented to the recent Industry
Consultative Group (ICG) and GRSA Board meetings for
consideration. The plan recommended a 260 metre sand
slipping track be constructed on the western boundary
of the Angle Park property, bordering the new soccer
pitches in the Parks Precinct. The development will result
in the loss of several spaces within the current trainers
carpark, so a realignment of site fencing is required to
maintain the existing number of spaces.
The new Gawler facility has been in operation for over
two months and GRSA is still working with the builder to
finalise defect rectification and to complete outstanding
work. A number of changes have already been made
following feedback from patrons on how the venue
operates during race meetings. Some of these changes
include the removal of the bain marie and installing an
additional point of sale station and adding a safety ramp
to the deck entrance.
The proposal received mostly positive feedback, with
the common view being that the slipping track would
greatly assist trainers living in the metropolitan region, but
also trainers in surrounding rural areas looking to access
a safe straight track training facility. On that basis, the
Board approved progression of the project to full costing
stage prior to final approval. Current estimates suggest
the track will cost in the vicinity of $125,000.
Trading at the Club has been extremely positive and a
number of functions and events have been booked at
the venue in the coming months. New Manager Shawn
Noack has worked extremely hard to ensure the facility is
servicing the needs of participants, as well as selling the
facility to the community for non-racing use.
MT GAMBIER KENNEL
HOUSE EXTENSION
The extension to the Mt Gambier kennel house is nearing
completion, with the project expected to be completed
by the end of the month. The works include the addition
of two extra race bays (allowing the Club to conduct 12
races at meetings), insulation to the roof and walls of the
kennel building and a new hung ceiling.
The Club has been extremely proactive in improving the
infrastructure at Tara Raceway, with recent additions
including a 600 metre start, slipping track, new
maintenance shed and improved tractor access to track.
It is anticipated that an automated irrigation system will
be installed on the racing and slipping tracks in the next
few months.

fulfil the role as Senior Investigator in light of recent issues
at the national industry level.
Noting his 44 year work history with SAPOL, Trevor has
more recently conducted an in-depth review of the RSPCA
(SA) investigation unit during 2013/2014, assisting them
in a number of areas. Further to this, in July 2014 he was
contracted to conduct a review of governance, process
and accountability within the cattle operations of the APY
Lands in SA’s central desert.
Trevor will be providing expert advice to Greyhound
Racing SA in relation to both overt and covert investigation
methodology and we welcome his engagement.

BACKGROUND CHECKS
Greyhounds Australasia have previously released some
guidelines to assist new owners when purchasing a
greyhound.
The guidelines are to ensure owners conduct a due
diligence before purchasing, much in the same way you
would when buying a house or a car.
Prior to purchase, prospective buyers should complete
their own validity checks on the greyhound.
Basic background checks include:
1. Request a Vets Certificate from the current owner
2. Seek clarification on any suspensions for the
particular greyhound
3. Review the greyhound’s previous race form
4. Identify the greyhound and seller (i.e. sight registration
papers and or owner/trainer identity card)
5. Seek clarification on any previous injuries the
greyhound has received
6. If the seller is acting as an agent for the transaction –
verify the authenticity of the agent
7. If participants intend breeding with the greyhound –
verify the greyhound’s DNA profile
8. Always request a written receipt upon payment
The majority of this information can be checked by
contacting the seller or alternatively the relevant state
greyhound racing controlling authority.
further information. This form will need to be updated by
June 30 when all licence renewals are due.
The defence of having animals as pets or livestock on
a property where registered greyhounds are kept and
trained forms one part of a new National Rule that will
shortly come into effect. It was seen as an obvious
requirement to make allowance for the circumstances
that would be typical on such a property, particularly
given the predominance of rurally-based participants.
In lieu of that Rule coming in (within days/weeks), a
Local Rule has been put in place to the same effect
as a temporary measure. The National Rule will also
specifically preclude the practice of live-baiting or the
use of an animal carcass for the purpose of training a
greyhound and other related considerations.
BREEDERS LICENCE IS A MUST
It is a requirement of GRSA that if you choose to breed
greyhounds in South Australia that you have a current
Breeders licence.
If you are looking at breeding with your bitch and you are
currently not licensed as a Breeder then you MUST obtain
a breeders licence PRIOR to your bitch being served.
Should you have your bitch served prior to obtaining
a licence then a Stewards fine may be imposed. This
may also jeopardise the chances at receiving the GRSA
Breeders Rebate.
If you have any queries about a Breeders licence please
contact me for further information.

RACING REPORT
RACING
MANAGERS
REPORT
BY SHAUN MATHIESON
GREYHOUND OF THE MONTH –
MARCH
The greyhound of the month for March was Kalden
Gambino for trainer Ray Murray who had an excellent
month of racing winning three and running second in two
of his five starts.
The son of Lochinvar Marlow and Abbadale Affair
showed he was right back to his brilliant best by not only
taking out a heat of the SA Anniversary Cup in fine style
he backed that up one week later defeating the best
sprinters in the state in the final. He rated a flying 29.92
on both occasions and showed he was still at the top of
SA sprinting.
He was placed on two occasions and won another open
event at headquarters in a blistering 29.66 for the 515m
journey after finding the front in late March rounding out a
super month of racing.
Kalden Gambino is a rising 4yo and at the end of the
month his record stands at 63 starts with 24 wins and 22
placings, and prizemoney just over $66,000.
RUN OF THE MONTH – MARCH
Run of the month for March was Grifter Bale for trainer
Ben Rawlings who showed a clean pair of paws in
winning the SA Distance Championship at Angle Park on
Thursday 12th March with an outstanding performance of
speed and stamina.
Grifter Bale led most of the way against a high quality field
over the staying trip to win by 1 length from Psychotic
Gold in a flying 43.04. In two months he dropped his time
by 10 lengths and almost eclipsed the magical 43.00
seconds.

RACE NIGHT OFFICE TO CLOSE
AT 6.30PM ON MONDAYS FROM
13TH APRIL
The Race Night office at Angle Park will close at 6.30pm
on Monday nights starting from 13th April. Please ensure
that Trainers have collected their Trainers Fee straight
after kenneling and that any paperwork is lodged in the
office before this time.
one bank account associated with it. Whilst previously
GRSA has been able to manually adjust this and provide
separate remittance advices, unfortunately this option will
no longer be available.
These changes have been implemented. Any queries
regarding this change please contact Sarah Webster or
the racing department on 08 8243 7100.
**Please ensure that all transfers of ownership have been
lodged as each race meeting will be finalised on a daily

HOT WEATHER POLICY
Trainers are reminded to make sure they are aware of the
conditions relating to the Hot Weather Policy. This policy
is available on the GRSA website and also at the track.
As times are advised by Sky Racing depending on racing
product on a national and international level a Twilight
meeting would be considered as the first race before
5.00pm and a night meeting with the first race after

MOUNT GAMBIER TRIALS
The Mount Gambier Club has advised that in April trials
will be conducted on Tuesday and Saturday mornings
starting at 9am. There will be No trials after race meetings
POLICY RELEASED FOR
TRIALLING AT ANGLE PARK
AND GAWLER BEFORE THE RACE
MEETING
EXTRA KENNEL SPACE AT MT
GAMBIER
The Industry Consultative Group recently met and
discussed the trialling policies at race meetings and in
particular how the Monday nights Angle Park structured
policy has been accepted. The ICG panel decided to
accept the Monday night policy for all Angle Park (except
Thursday night) and Gawler meetings allowing for trialling
to be conducted between kennels closing and the start of
the first race. Kenneling times for these meetings will be
extended by 15 minutes to allow for these trials to occur
the same as Monday night.
Approval has been granted for the new kennels at Mt
Gambier to be used allowing for a possible 12 races on
their race program. Initially the club will only look to run
extra races on a Friday where they receive most exposure
and better off course wagering. This will be dependent
upon nominations received.
PAYMENT OF PRIZEMONEY/
TRAINERS FEE
As GRSA continues to refine and increase our usage
of the OzChase system we have moved away from our
current manual methods of processing prizemoney/
trainers’ fee and have started utilising reports
automatically generated from OzChase.
With this increased functionality, GRSA has the ability
to split prizemoney payments between owners and
trainers, as opposed to the current situation where 100%
of prizemoney is paid to one bank account. Should
trainers or owners wish to take advantage of this it will be
necessary for additional forms to be lodged with GRSA.
As a result of the fact that the payments will be
automated, each OzChase ID will only be able to have

• If there are 12 races at Angle Park or Gawler there will

RACING REPORT
& any Group race Interstate.
• Local greyhounds will be allowed to trial on a race
night, where they are in preparation for a feature
event and nominated for a meeting and the race does
not stand up. This will include all distances and also
take precedence over the policy.
• If a greyhound qualifies for a feature final and requires
a trial in between this will be conducted as a solo trial
and sit separately to the 2 four dog trials.
Whilst these changes increase the time between
kennelling and the first race by 15 minutes it should
provide an opportunity for more trialling opportunities for
one and two dog trainers in particular.
It is extremely important that trainers book in to trial at
these race meetings. No trials will be accepted outside of
these booking times.

SA GREYHOUND AUCTION TO

After a review of the Greyhound Auction held in October

At the last Grading Review Panel meeting it was agreed

races when they are programmed. These races are run
on Category 1, 2 and 3 meetings and are usually Grade

NEW RED VESTS A BIG HIT
After terrific feedback from the Industry the new red vests
are being distributed to all of our tracks to be used as
the main apparel for participants. Participants are able to
purchase their very own red vests for $20 however GRSA
will still always have some available. These vets look
very smart and come up particularly well on Sky Racing
promoting SA Racing so with that in mind the long parade
coats will be phased out of action with participants
required to have a black or navy jumper available to be
worn under the vests.
VOLUNTRY PAYMENT FOR GAP
ON PRIZEMONEY FORMS
Through the ICG meetings and Breeders Task Force
it was suggested that an option for owners to direct
prizemoney to GAP be an option available on the
Prizemoney Reimbursement forms. GRSA has made
this change on the forms where Owners can direct a
percentage of prizemoney to GAP. These forms are
available on the website and from GRSA.
ANGLE PARK VET SURGERY OPEN
EVERY TUESDAY
BOOKMAKER PETER DAMARELL
ONCOURSE EVERY WEDNESDAY
AT ANGLE PARK
The Angle Park Vet Surgery is open on Tuesday’s from
10am right through until the completion of the trials.
Dr Greg Moore, whom also works out of the Blakes
Crossing Veterinary Surgery during the remainder of
the week, will be available oncourse every Tuesday to
provide this service to the Industry.
Bookmaker Peter Damarell will be on-course every
Wednesday betting competitive fixed odd markets on the
full programme at Angle Park. Peter will also display all
bookmaker prices from the thoroughbred meetings in South
Australia, Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland. This
is a major bonus for oncourse patrons as there will now be
no need to make the long drive to Gawler, Balaklava, Murray
Bridge or Strathalbyn as the very same bookmakers prices
will be available at Angle Park every Wednesday. Touch
screens have also been installed at Angle Park to assist with
race form every meeting.
Punters can enjoy the comfort of the Angle Park betting
auditorium and it’s free to get in. No more hot or cold old
betting rings after a long drive. Why not give it a try?
To assist with the planning of his day it would be
appreciated if you could contact Greg via email
at gregmoore.vet@hotmail.com, sms or leave a
message on 0438 169 316 so that he can organise
his appointments. All requests for appointments will be
responded to within 24 hours.
Should you be attending the Vet Surgery on a hot day
you will have access to the Surgery via the electric gate
adjacent to McQueens, it will be necessary for you to
press the intercom button and advise the staff member
that you require access to the Vet Surgery.
Please tell your thoroughbred friends about this
outstanding opportunity. Save your entry fee and petrol
and participate in the opportunity to win a free $50
betting voucher drawn on the day with Peter Damarell’s
compliments.
WEEKLY UPDATES FOR
PARTICIPANTS
For weekly updates and media releases these will be
detailed on the GRSA website and sent out via text
message. If you have not provided GRSA with your mobile
