Mathelitics Arrives!
The Maths
Department has
just purchased
Mathletics, an
online
mathematical
interactive
software that
can be accessed
both at school or
home. There are
a wide variety of
maths activities
that support
every student’s
mathematical
knowledge, with
tasks for every
ability level. This
enables the students in Years 7 – 12 to work on their areas of challenge, as well as supporting classwork and
homework. This includes NAPLAN style practice tests are part of the suite so students can also work on the
challenging areas in numeracy in Years 7 to 9. In years 10 -12 students have the opportunity to access work to
consolidate what they are doing at school or challenge themselves to higher level problems.
Every student has a log in provided by their Mathematics teacher. If your child is having issues with logging on,
see Mr McCosh in the Mathematics Staffroom. For parents who are interested, Andrew McCosh is running a
training session on Wednesday May 13th at 6:00pm on how to get the most benefit out of it for their child. If you
need more information, please contact Mr McCosh on 4030222 or email amcco43@eq.edu.au .
ANZAC Day is a major event in our school community each year
with parades and marches occurring at numerous times throughout the
week. Atherton State High School was well represented at most of these
events with two of our students taking on the roll of Bugler at 5
ceremonies across the Tablelands. Kane McElligott and Jack Howard
stepped up to the challenge of presenting the Last Post and the Rouse
at Yungaburra SS, Kairi SS, Atherton SS and Atherton SHS ceremonies
last week.
A big Congratulation also goes to Jack Howard for his contribution as
Bugler for the Atherton Community Dawn Service on ANZAC Day. This
is the first time in many years that Atherton SHS has had a student take
on this honourable roll. Congratulations Jack!
Update on Jess’ Premier’s ANZAC Prize Trip
As we paused to pay our respects in our local communities last
week, Jess Honan was part of the Gallipoli and Lone Pine
ceremonies. It was here that Jess laid her plaque remembering
Private William Belson, who enrolled from Malanda and died at
Gallipoli. Jess also visited Troy and had
the honour of singing the National
Anthem at “Shrapnel Alley”.
In the final week of the tour, Jess is off to
the Western Front. We look forward to
hearing the stories of her tour.
Exciting news from our literacy teachers!
Our school is about to start using Lexia to support and extend students’ reading skills.
What is Lexia Reading Core5™?
It is a web-based reading program that provides support to students to improve their reading, writing and spelling. A placement test enables students to work at a level and improve from there.
How do students use it?
It’s simple. Students log in on any device at school or at home and continue from their last session. Each student’s progress is
individually monitored and where a student needs support, our teachers will provided that targeted teaching.
Who can use Lexia Reading Core5™?
Initially select students in Year 7 to 10 will access this program. These students will work with the program as part of their Valuing Education Program. Eventually ALL students will be able to access this program.
When will Lexia Reading Core5™ begin?
We will start after NAPLAN in mid May, but we’ll provide more details in the next fortnight.
For more information go to www.lexialearning.com and click Support or call Head of Junior Secondary, Lisa Hawke on

This week’s news in brief:
Road Safety Message from Mackay Sugar:
2015 crushing season will begin 7 days a week from May to December,
please be aware of a significant increase in road transport and cane
harvesting operations across the Tablelands.
Cairns Brass Carinya Fundraiser:
Every year we are fortunate to have one of Australia’s finest brass bands - Cairns Brass – play for the Atherton community as a
fundraiser for Carinya Home for the Aged. This year the concert and brass band spectacular is on this Saturday May 9 from
7:00pm. Not only do Cairns brass play, but local school and community bands also are given the opportunity to perform for the
community. On the night, the Atherton SHS concert band, Yungaburra SS concert band and Tablelands Regional Brass Band
will perform. This is the first opportunity for our Instrumental Music students to perform for the community and I encourage
you to come along and not only support the students from the Tablelands schools, but also enjoy the performance by Cairns
Brass. Entry is only $10 for adults and children are free. All funds are donated to Carinya.
Parent/Teacher interviews:
Interviews are scheduled for Monday May 4 after school. If you are unable to attend an interview, please contact your child’s
teacher to arrange an alternate time to discuss their progress.
P&C Meeting:
The next general meeting of the Atherton SHS Parents and Citizens Association is scheduled for 7:00pm next Tuesday night. All
parents and interested community members are encouraged to attend.
