Dr. Jim Barahal honored
By Dr. Richard Kelley
Over my lifetime I have met, been friends
with, and worked with many wonderful people,
from family members and friends to teachers
and service providers. One of those whom I
have always admired greatly is Dr. Jim Barahal,
so I was delighted to hear that on May 5 he was
inducted into the Hawai‘i Sports Hall of Fame
in recognition of his 27 years of outstanding
work and success leading the Honolulu
Marathon Association.
Dr. Richard Kelley
The honor is hugely deserved because
Dr. Jim, more than any other individual, has
grown the race from a struggling local competition into one of the
world’s top athletic events, comparable to marathons run in Boston,
New York, London, Paris and many other cities far larger than Honolulu.
Outrigger Resorts is proud to have been a consistent race sponsor and
to have provided other special assistance needed to help the race and its
organization grow, as author Jim Collins might say, “From Good to Great!”
I would like to add some personal notes about Jim, so readers can
understand how a young physician from Michigan could have become
so successful as president and CEO of an organization that runs a
premier international marathon and a number of related events.

reports to general manager Pascal Billon,
effectively immediately.
Yothin has worked with some of the
world’s leading hotel chains including
Marriott, Accor and varied beach resorts in
idyllic locations in Thailand. He is experienced
in the pre-opening of properties, from city
hotels to challenging island locations in
Thailand. He also worked as the general
Yothin Uthaphu
manager of a travel agency.
After schooling in Thailand, Yothin earned a diploma in business
management from Wentworth Academy in Sydney, Australia.
Aside from 16 years’ experience in hotels and many general
manager appointments, Yothin has earned additional skills and
qualifications, including specialist courses on health and safety in the
workplace and financial management.
A sports enthusiast, Yothin enjoys swimming, tennis, squash
and bowling.
As director, systems operations, Brian
reports to Alan White effective May 16. His new
duties include managing the operations of the
central corporate computer operations, Hawai‘i
PC support services and worldwide network
administration departments, including
personal computer systems; new applications
and services; business continuity planning for
strategic systems and network components;

Brian Takenaka
and global system rollouts and standards for

Brian started with Outrigger as a systems operator and over the
years gained experience resulting in promotions to PC specialist, then
system support supervisor and most recently systems & operations
manager. With a 27-year career at Outrigger, Brian says he’s proud to
have a four-digit host number!
Brian has a degree in electronics from the DeVry Institute of
Technology. He adds, “This was before computers were computers!”
He and his wife Divina have two sons, Chase (19) and Dane (16). They
spend quite a bit of their time at their sons’ activities: basketball,
volleyball, Kendo, band and track. The last four years, Brian has been
head coach for Police Activities League (PAL) basketball (5-8 year olds).
His sons were his assistant coaches and they had a team of their own.
Brian said this taught them to give back to the community in addition
to valuable life lessons. He adds, “If you can coach 5-year-olds to play
basketball, you can do anything!”
According to Brian, keeping up with technology keeps the mind
sharp; he also believes keeping physically fit is just as important, so when
he has free time, working out is a priority and thankfully enjoyable.
Congratulations, Chris, Yothin and Brian!

Caring for each other - Host Appreciation Week
By Kathy Foley
As part of Outrigger Enterprises’ Four Paddles Process,
Outrigger hosts across the globe celebrated Paddle
Two: Caring for Each Other with activities that promote
a sense of community and family throughout Outrigger
and a workplace environment where hosts enjoy being
at work. Hosts were encouraged to offer random acts of
appreciation and kindness between departments and/or
other parts of Outrigger’s global family during the week of
May 10-16, coinciding with International Day of Families.
Here are stories and pictures of the fun!
OHANA Waikiki East
By Niel Mason
On May 17, OHANA Waikiki East hosts invited their
families for lunch to celebrate and promote a sense of
community and family throughout Outrigger. The glorious
smiles on the faces of the children and grandchildren were
trumped only by those of our hosts who proudly showed
off to their families where they come to work every day.
What was to be a simple “chili dogs and chips” lunch
escalated into a multicultural feast orchestrated by Yuet Oy
“Ella” Au (executive housekeeper) and Denise Torres (guest
Page 4
services manager). Over 80 hosts and family members
enjoyed the long lunch as the younger (and young at heart)
enjoyed an afternoon swim in the pool while others engaged in
conversations so much enjoyed but often missed during dayto-day engagement as heads are down and focused on work.
Those who were working were provided an extended
lunch to drop in to the Pool Terrace to enjoy the festivities. The event truly promoted an enjoyable workplace
environment. Mahalo to all for sharing your Sunday with us.

Corporate Communications, IT, HR and Global Marketing
By Kathy Foley
The corporate communications team reached out
near and far in expressing appreciation to fellow hosts for
simply making Outrigger a great place to work.
Known as the “fun bunch,” we donned swimsuits and
danced to “We’re Walking on Sunshine” for our APAC and
Guam hosts and partners - well, at least we did via Jib
Jab, a fun e-card program that allows you to personalize
characters with faces that sing and dance to well-known
tunes - sure to bring a smile to its recipients.
We also hosted a progressive ice cream social for our
corporate office coworkers and OHANA Waikiki East
hosts along with IT, HR and Global Marketing on a Friday
afternoon – a welcome, fun and fitting end to the
busy workweek.
The corporate office enjoys giving and receiving thanks!

Last week was “super” as we
celebrated our hosts every single day!
Mother’s Day Sunday kicked things off
with sundaes for all. Monday was Aloha
spirit day where we were encouraged to
wear aloha attire and a ‘pua’ in our hair and
treated to manapua. Tuesday we made
a personalized star nametag to show
off who we are with malasadas for our
sweet treat. Team spirit was overflowing
on Wednesday with hosts donning their
favorite team jersey and macho nachos as
the sideline snack. Thursday was themed
crazy socks and there were plenty of them!
The day began with a sweet parfait. Friday,
hosts revealed their favorite superhero
and we grilled hamburgers, hot dogs and
snacks in preparation for a busy weekend.
Saturday was Charity Walk and those who
were working were given a slippah to visit
each department where they received a
treat and a stamp on their slippah.
We had a great week celebrating and
appreciating one another.

Hōkūle‘a greeted by Outrigger hosts on arrival in Sydney Harbour
By Donna Parkin
Hawai‘i’s Hōkūle‘a sailed into Sydney Harbour on
May 19 as part of its worldwide conservation-themed
Mālama Honua voyage and Outrigger’s Sydney-based
team members Andrew Gee, regional director of sales and
marketing and Juliet Hudson, sales manager, were on hand
to greet it.
A spectacular ceremony featuring traditional
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander canoes and cultural
performances welcomed Hōkūle‘a when it berthed at the
Australian National Maritime Museum.
Outrigger Enterprises Group has a long-standing
relationship with the Polynesian Voyaging Society that
launched the vessel in Hawai‘i in 1975 and is a strategic
partner in the current worldwide voyage.
Hōkūle‘a aims to revitalise traditional voyaging and
navigation traditions and will be open for a week to
allow visitors and school students to climb on board,
meet the crew and learn more about this unique vessel
and its message.
The 19-metre (62-foot) vessel uses only wind power and
is navigated using ancestral knowledge of star patterns,
ocean movement, marine life and weather patterns.
While in Australia it will visit Brisbane, Townsville,
Cairns, Lizard Island, Thursday Island and Darwin.

Memory of industry mate inspires Andrew Gee in Sydney half-marathon
By Donna Parkin
The memory of a great travel industry mate who
passed away suddenly from cancer early this year
motivated Andrew Gee, regional director of sales and
marketing Australia and New Zealand, over the finishing
stages of his half marathon run in Sydney on May 17.
Andrew ran in the 21km half marathon, his first, to
raise funds for the Can Too community that supports early
career researchers through Cure Cancer Australia.
“I completed the challenge. I ran the Sydney Morning
Herald Half Marathon in a time of 2 hours and 14 minutes
– which was far faster than I expected. Actually my goal
was to just finish!” said an elated Andrew. “For me, it was at
times a tough race. The mind plays tricks on you when you
are pounding away on the pavement, but over the last 8
kms I received some amazing inspiration from the Can Too
supporters on the course shouting “Go Can Too, Go Andrew.”
“Seeing my family along the course holding a sign
encouraging me also kept me motivated for the last 3km
along with the memory of my mate’s very sad, unexpected
death in January,” he said.
Andrew says he was exhausted by the time he
crossed the finish line but managed to make it to the
Page 8
recommended afternoon rehydration recovery session at
Sydney’s Manly Wharf Hotel Bar.
Congratulations, Andrew!

Outrigger Resorts steps up for Hawai‘i’s charities
By Kathy Foley
Outrigger Resorts was out in force over the past
couple weekends when hosts, friends and family on three
islands (Kaua‘i, Maui and O‘ahu) “put their best slippah
forward” to raise funds for those in need in our state at
the 37th Visitor Industry Charity Walk. Sponsored by the
Hawai‘i Lodging & Tourism Association, this year’s event
was a spectacular success with 11,277 walkers statewide
and a record-breaking $2.2 million raised!
As is tradition, walkers collected goodies and ate
their way from start to finish. At our company-sponsored
checkpoint along Waikiki Beach Walk® (WBW) on O‘ahu,
volunteers handed out custom Outrigger fans and our
partner McDonald’s handed out refreshing apple slices and
Go-Gurt to the 5,300 walkers/runners who donated their
time and money for the cause.
Our refreshing water mist fans were a favorite as
walkers and runners cooled off and rocked-out to The
Wreck, an alternative pop band made up of musicians Ian
Wacksman, Nick Marabella, Josh Kay, Dylan Wacksman and
Gino Romano. The Wacksman brothers just happen to be
the offspring of our own talented SVP Global Distribution
Dan Wacksman! In between sets, Hawaiian 105’s Bruddah
Wade provided encouraging commentary for all those
walking through the Beach Walk promenade.
Outrigger’s tradition of community kōkua is strong,
and there are many to thank:
To our volunteers who set up, manned and broke down
the checkpoint: Aaron Miller, Abby Yagi, Aitogi Totemese,
Amanda Honma-Lacaran, Ben Starbuck, Bitsy Kelley, Bruce

It is my pleasure to share that Outrigger Hotels &

in front of all major Hawai‘i hoteliers and partners on May 7,
2015, and is Outrigger’s third E-Marketer of the Year award
(2013 & 2010).
The E-Marketer of the Year award evaluates several
factors including performance and programming stated
Tommy Martinez, Orbitz worldwide regional director,
West. In the end, it was the Outrigger team’s intricate
marketing strategy and tactics of combining both on
and offline promotions and campaigns and the strategic
partnership with Brand USA that helped win the award.
Tommy Martinez stated “…Outrigger was the clear winner
based on Outrigger’s participation in the Brand USA UK
offline and online campaign. It was the first Hawaiian
partner to include in this first and original effort and worth
the award.”
Brand USA is a private-public organization with a
mission to promote the United States as a premier travel
destination through strategic partnerships in the travel
industry. Outrigger Enterprises Group is Brand USA’s first
hotel partner in Hawai‘i.
Last year in October, through great partnership and
negotiation, the Outrigger Resorts brand was able to
feature the Outrigger Reef Waikiki Beach Resort on taxi
wraps in central London for four weeks at no additional
cost, fully funded by Orbitz Worldwide and Brand USA.
To further capture this opportunity, the global
