E-Blast Newsletter - Bellingham High School

March 16, 2015
Dear Red Raiders,
Important Links
In two weeks, tenth grade students will be taking
the Smarter Balanced ELA (English/Language Arts)
State Assessment. Bellingham High School will
be testing all sophomores from March 23 March 26. This is the first year for this particular
assessment, however, state testing isn’t new to
our district. We’ve had standards-aligned state
tests for 18 years and have had online state
testing for five years. The transition to Smarter
Balanced Assessments is happening all around the
state and much of the country. Clear,
understandable test scores help teachers and
parents work together to adjust their approach
and better meet students’ needs.

The Bellingham Promise (the district’s strategic
plan) guides everything we do for our students,
families, community and staff. One of BPS’ core
beliefs is to focus on the whole child. State tests
are only one benchmark; other measures and
evidence are just as important in assessing the
development of our kids. We encourage you to
keep these tests in perspective of our overall
goals.

Dear BHS Parents,
Please have your son/daughter take this
Student Athletic Interest Survey.
Washington State Law requires school districts
to survey their students every three years to
determine if our program offerings match
the needs and interests of our students.
Your child’s participation in this survey will
assist us as we assess what we offer.
AP EXAMS ARE COMING UP!
AP exam fees may now be paid at the ASB
window. The exam costs $91 per test, and for
students receiving free/reduced lunch the
exam fee is $12. Those students will need to
have their parents sign a low-income
verification form available outside the ASB
window first. Don’t delay! The deadline for
payment is March 20th. The dates for the
2015 AP exams are May 4-15.
