Summary:
The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has developed the ISO
14000 family of standards that help organizations to take a proactive approach to
managing environmental issues.
The following ISO 14000 standards that are related to consumer products
specifically include:
 ISO 14020 series: Addresses a range of approaches to environmental
labels and declarations including seals of approval, self-declared
environmental claims and quantified environmental information
about product and services.1
 ISO 14040 series: Gives guidelines on the principles and conduct of
Life-cycle assessment studies that provide information on how to
reduce the overall environmental impact of products and services.2
 ISO Guide 64: Provides guidance for addressing environmental
aspects in product standards.3
The following ISO 14000 standards related to consumer products that are under
development include:
 ISO 14067: Will provide requirements for the quantification and
communication of greenhouse gases associated with products.4
 ISO 14069: Will provide guidance for organizations to calculate the
carbon footprint of their products, services and supply chain.5
