Congratulations to Year 11 student, Molly Givney who followed up her
solo dance performance at Showcase with impressive achievements
over the weekend. She competed in the Australian Teachers of Dance
Queensland State Scholarships, where she was awarded 2nd place in

the Senior Classical Scholarship and 4th place in the Senior Jazz
Scholarship.
Molly will now represent Queensland in Melbourne in July at the
Australasian Scholarship Finals.
International Baccalaureate Information
Evening
On Wednesday 10 June we will be holding an information evening for
current and prospective families interested in finding out more about
the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (IBDP) and the
benefits for students undertaking it. The evening will be held in the
Community Languages Centre (T4) starting at 6.30pm and concluding
at 7.30pm. Light refreshments will be provided.
What's On
Cleveland District State High School is currently seeking authorisation
to deliver the program to Year 11 students from the start of 2017. We
have been granted Candidate status with extremely favourable
feedback from the IB Organisation with our initial submissions.

We recently had the absolute pleasure of being taken back in time to
Ancient Egypt. The Year 7 History students presented their amazing
replications of Ancient Egypt artefacts that have left a lasting legacy on
modern life.

Information for Parents
Sick Bay
Students who become unwell during the school day must get a note
from a teacher and report to sick bay. Staff in sick bay will then make
contact with the family and organise for them to be collected. Students
should not ring a parent directly because parents arrive in the office
and their student isn’t waiting there for collection. It is important that
procedures are followed to ensure the duty of care of all students.
Uniform
Cleveland High’s Parent and Citizens’ association has determined that
we are a uniform school. We ask all parents to support the School
Dress Code to ensure the good reputation of the school. The School
Dress Code should be adhered to any time that students are at school
or in public.
Uniform Donations
Families that have school uniform items, particularly sport shorts,
culottes, socks and jumpers, that are now surplus to requirement,
please consider donating them to the school. Please drop off any spare
uniform items at the main office.

French Excursion to Alliance Française

On May 25, fifteen students participated in a French excursion to
Alliance Francaise to experience a taste of French culture through
various activities. It was a great opportunity for them to be immersed in
French and meet real French-speaking people.
The tour included a wide range of activities chosen according to the
students' needs: French music, French general knowledge, food,
French advertisement, Francophonie, pronunciation and theatre.
Students also learned more about Alliance Française, while enjoying a
“goûter à la française” with an exquisite pain au chocolat.
Through the excursion, students learnt to appreciate the French
culture, as well as understand and foster awareness of cultural and
language diversity as a global citizen.
High Resolves Program 2015
On May 21 our High Resolves students completed their second day of
collaboration. The students arrived high spirited and ready to get our
day underway. This particular session of the workshop was our Project
Initiation day and Emma Houghton from the High Resolves group
facilitated the students, which saw them engaged in a number of
valuable and worthwhile activities.
Throughout the day students were divided into working groups that
involved them completing challenges and eventually working through a
decision-making process in order to settle on our project topic that will

culminate on Multicultural Day. Using the decision-making skills that
Emma taught them, the students narrowed down their choices of topic
and eventually settled on the issue of self-esteem. The students felt
that the issue of self-esteem is an important topic for their age group
and one they wanted to showcase on Multicultural Day. The students
will now brainstorm ideas and decide on the direction for this topic
during our next session.
I was exceptionally proud of the students in the way they conducted
themselves and how they contributed to the day. They worked
incredibly hard and Emma and I are looking forward to session 3 to see
how they are planning to expand on their great ideas!

Courses and Careers Expo 2015
Redlands Performing Arts Centre (RPAC) will once again be the venue
for the Redlands Courses & Careers Expo on Friday 5 June from 9am

– 5.00pm. This year the Expo is supported by Cleveland District SHS,
Redland City Council and the Redland City Bulletin with some major
additions to the program. There will be over 55 exhibitors representing
all of the major Universities and TAFE Colleges as well as
representatives from apprenticeship centres and industry groups.
Defence Force Recruiting and Queensland Police Recruiting will also
be there. There will also be representatives from a range of industries
such as construction, manufacturing, energy and resources, sport and
fitness, beauty, childcare and many more ready to advise students and
parents of future career options.
The wonderful facilities provided to us at RPAC allow for exhibitors to
hold seminar sessions for students and their parents. These sessions
will run every 40mins commencing at 9.30am through until 4pm with
the event being opened by the Deputy Mayor, Councillor Beard at 9am.

Student Council News
Student Council wants to thank everyone who supported the Gold Coin
Day on 29 May. The total raised was $1000. The money has been split
between Biggest Morning Tea Cancer Fundraiser and resources for
the Pango School’s teachers, our sister school in Vanuatu.
Student Council Representatives have been working hard assisting in
the Tuckshop.
Also, the Junior Student Council ran a successful canteen at the Junior
Disco. It was a great night.

Technology Design Challenges
Technology Studies students have just finished working on some
design challenges. Above are some examples of illuminated signs
made by Year 9 students, and Co2 dragsters designed and built by
year 10 students.
Sport Development Trials
On Monday 18 May, Cleveland District SHS welcomed over 130
students from local primary schools who were trialling for positions in
Sport Development classes in Volleyball, Touch Football and Football
for 2016.
The selectors were extremely impressed with the quality of the
students who attended the trial and look forward to working with these
students in the future.
A second trial will be held on Monday 20 July from 3.30pm - 5.00pm for
students who have been invited back to trial again, or for students who
could not make the first trial. There are limited spaces available for
these classes for 2016. The process for registering online for this
second trial has been advertised via the school Facebook page.

The Walk for Hope
Our 7th annual Walk for Hope will be held during school hours on
Wednesday 24 June. This is our main fundraiser for supporting our
Vanuatu visitors this August and for our Vanuatu Trip in 2016. By
participating in, and donating to our walk-a-thon, you are helping us to
bring the hope of a brighter future to many ni-Vanuatu children living in
poverty.
This year we are very excited to announce that we have over $2500 in
prizes for students and donors. Our main prize, for our highest
fundraiser, is a wonderful Acer Aspire Switch 11 2in1 Tablet/Notebook
(RRP $1299!) kindly donated by Computer Alliance. This
computer/tablet meets our school’s BYOD requirements so will be a
fantastic prize to win.
For every $10 a student raises in the Walk-a-thon, they will go into a
draw to win an iPad mini bundle, valued at $320. (This draw excludes
the winner of the main prize.) There are also other smaller prizes to be
won.
In addition, our donors also stand to win! For every $5 donated, donors
go in a draw to win a $500 prize package. This prizes includes a $250
Mantra Mooloolaba Getaway from Andrew Laming MP, a $200
Residential Internal and External Pest Control Treatment with a 12
month warranty from Huber Pest Control (1300 304 932) and a $50
Hair Services Voucher from Exclusive Hair Studio (3821 2383).
We encourage all students to participate, raise a few dollars and make
a difference in the lives of children living in poor communities in
Vanuatu.
Host a ni-Vanuatu Visitor
We have our biggest group ever of staff and students from our Vanuatu
Sister School visiting in August. We are looking for families to open up
their homes for a week and homestay a couple of students or a staff
member. This is the trip of a lifetime for our visitors, so you will play a
very special part in their lives. You will also have a friend for life –
which is especially wonderful if you get to travel to Vanuatu on our
school trip or family holiday.

know as soon as possible.
Vanuatu Garage Sale And Chaplaincy Trivia Night
We would like to extend our thanks to all those who donated, helped

these events, doubling last year’s result for both! Your support helps us
to achieve our goal to maintain a full week Chaplaincy Service and
helps ensure our projects in Vanuatu can continue to grow.

Vanuatu School Trip Information Night
Our 10th anniversary Vanuatu Mission Trip is planned for the winter
holidays in 2016 and is going to be a really special trip. An information
night will be held on 20 July at 6:30pm in the C-Block Drop In Centre.
On this night we will outline the plans for this trip, including dates,
costs, the planned itinerary and pre-trip functions and fundraisers.
Staff, students and parents are warmly invited to attend.
If you have ever been to Vanuatu you will know it is a country of
extremes. The nation is a lush tropical island paradise with crystal blue
water and spectacular reefs. The people are wonderfully friendly and
welcoming and always so appreciative of our visits. The country is a
very stable, safe place to visit. However, Vanuatu has serious
problems. The country has limited natural resources, leaving most of
the nation in poverty. Education suffers as there are limited funds even
to pay teachers, never mind provide good schools or resources. In a
recent report, Vanuatu ranked highest in illiteracy in the Pacific, with
one cause being a lack of access to books.
Our projects have become more ambitious as relationships have grown
and now include equipping kindergartens and providing school
libraries. In 2016 we will travel to a remote school, Fanafo, and provide
a full range of books including fiction, non-fiction and reference books.
The reports from the Stonehill, Palon and Navelle schools where the
2014 team provided wonderful libraries is that the students literacy,
knowledge and creativity have already started to improve.

Our biannual mission trips to Vanuatu allow staff and students to
participate in real life-changing educational upliftment projects. We
have built a special bond with Pango Centre School who are now our
Sister School and we have hosted several groups of their staff and
students on educational trips to Brisbane.
Students who will be in Years 9 to 12 in 2016 are able to join our team
travelling to Vanuatu, while all students are welcome to help with the
pre-trip projects like book collection and sorting and fundraisers.
If any students currently in Year 8-12 are interested in being part of the
2016 trip, they can see Chappy Neale or Heather so they can put their
names down on the expression of interest list in the C-block Drop In
Centre.
Languages Fun Day
On Monday 1 June 2015, 140
primary school students from
Cleveland, Bayview,
Ormiston, Dunwich,
Thornlands and Mt Cotton
State Schools visited
Cleveland District State High
School for a day filled with
language fun. Students
participated in a variety of
activities, ranging from Chinese calligraphy and paper cutting, singing
body parts in French, Matisse paper cutting and making Japanese
hachimaki (headbands) and origami.
Not only did students learn various terms and experience Japanese,
Chinese and French culture, they also tasted it – literally. A lavish and
abundant lunch was enjoyed by all, which included Chinese spring
rolls, money bags, Japanese sushi, French baguette and quiches.
Students also had fruit for dessert and a chocolate croissant for
morning tea. After lunch the students enjoyed some cultural
performances including the Can Can Dance and Chinese Lion Dancing
by Cleveland District State High senior students. The feedback at the
end of the day was overwhelmingly positive: “It was a great day. I
learnt a lot today about all the different countries.” “The food was all
very tasty and it was fun trying all of the different foods.” “I really liked
all of the activities and loved the Can Can Dance, Lion Dancing and
the Play.” “It was an excellent day and I think you should do it every
year.” were just some of the comments students provided on their
feedback forms.
Overall, the Languages Fun Day was a fabulous opportunity for the
Year 6 students to engage with others through their interest in
languages and gain an understanding of the opportunities offered by
the Languages Department at Cleveland District State High School.

Titration Competition
On Saturday May 22, twelve
senior chemistry students
travelled to the University of
Queensland at St Lucia to
participate in the annual Royal
Australian Chemistry
Institute’s Chemical Analysis
Competition, commonly
known as the High School’s
Titration Competition. This
event requires students to
accurately determine the
concentration of an unknown
acid using laboratory skills
they have developed at
school and is an excellent
opportunity for them to gain
experience in a university
laboratory setting.
Students competed both
individually and in teams of
three. Individual results were
quite impressive, as seen below:

The team of Stacey O’Regan, Tristan Samson and Alexandria Wevers
did extremely well, finishing 8th overall on the day. They will now have
a nervous wait to see if this is high enough to progress to the national
finals later in the year.
These results wouldn’t be possible without the efforts of the
hardworking Laboratory Technicians at Cleveland DSHS (Paul
Baguley, Sharyn Miles and Jasmine McDonald) who prepared all

materials and equipment for the students to both practice leading up to
the event and participate on the day.
Summer Season Wrap-Up
The summer season of interschool sport has now drawn to a close with
some amazing results from our teams across all year levels. Our
interschool teams continue to dominate with the following teams
winning their District finals and becoming District Premiers:
- 7, 8, 10 & Open boys and girls touch
- 7, 8, 9 & 10 girls basketball
- 7 boys volleyball
- 7 girls softball
- 8 & open boys baseball
- open boys cricket
These teams continue to perform strongly in their round 2 and semifinal games, with the following teams progressing to the grand final of
the Metropolitan sport round: 7 boys touch, 8 boys and girls touch,
open girls touch and 7 boys volleyball. It was the Year 7 boys volleyball
and 8 boys touch teams that were crowned Metropolitan Champions.
The Year 7 volleyball team convincingly won their games against
Indooroopilly State High and Citipointe Christian College. The 8 boys
touch team won a hard fought battle against Murrumba Downs State
High, winning 4-3 in a drop off. Congratulations to all our interschool
teams on a fantastic season. Winter interschool sport trials have now
finished with the first round of the winter season starting on June 2
against Capalaba College.
Regional Cross Country
On May 19, Cleveland High had seventeen students competing at the
Metropolitan East Cross Country trials that were held at John Paul
College. All seventeen students competed extremely well. David Pinto

was very impressive, winning the 17 years boys 6km race by
approximately 30 seconds. Laura McKillop also gained selection
finishing 5th in the 12 years 3km race. Elodie Rousseau and Kailey
Wilton just missed selection, finishing 10th and 8th respectively. David
and Laura will compete at the State Cross Country Championships in
July at Runaway Bay.
Athletics Training has started on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons
from 3.00pm to 4.00pm. We encourage all students to participate and
prepare for the Athletics Carnival on June 26 (last day of Term 2).
State Football Championships
Congratulations to Lauren Spreadborough, Keesha Martinuzzo, Demi
Robins, Sam Langley, Caelem Finlay, Isaac Farrelly and Danny Driver
who have recently returned after playing in the U/ 18 State Football
Championships on the Sunshine Coast representing Metropolitan East.
The female team finished 3rd overall and the male team won the
tournament. Demi and Danny were both selected into the Queensland
Team with Sam being named as a shadow player. This is an amazing
effort with the National Championships being played in conjunction with
the Pac Games in December.
National Collection of Data on School Students with
Disability
Dear Parents and Carers
This letter has been sent to all parents and carers of students in our school to
inform them of our participation in the 2015 data collection.
All schools in Australia are required to participate in the 2015 Nationally
Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability.
What is the National Collection of Data on School Students with Disability?
All Australian governments have agreed to work together to implement a new
annual national data collection on school students with disability. This data
collection process is being phased in over a three year period from 2013-2015.
The first two years were a transition period.
In 2015, the first full national collection of data on school students with disability
will take place in all Australian schools. From then on, this data collection will
occur in every school, every year, along with other school data collections.
What does disability mean?
This new national data collection will reinforce the actions required of schools
under the National Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability
Standards for Education 2005. The significant change with this collection is the
use of a broader definition of disability than the one currently used to identify
and allocate resources in educational systems. As a result of this shift in the
definition we believe that more students in our community may be considered
eligible for identification in the data collection. These laws mean that schools
and education systems are required to make, where needed, reasonable
adjustments for students with disability.

What is an adjustment?
An adjustment is a measure or action taken to assist a student with disability to
participate in education on the same basis as other students. Adjustments can
be made across the whole school setting, in the classroom and at the individual
level. Some students with disability, at particular stages during their time at
school, may not require any personalised adjustments beyond the
differentiation that teachers provide to all students on a day-to-day basis.
Differentiation occurs when teachers use a variety of teaching strategies to
cater for reasonable adjustments for students with disability. Differentiation is
not the same as personalised adjustments made for individual students.
Differentiation is part of good teaching practice.
What will this mean for my child?
Determining the level and type of support needed for an individual student is
not a new activity for Australian schools. The information provided by this new
data collection will enable all Australian governments to better target support
and resources to assist students with disability in both government and nongovernment schools. More accurate information about school students with
disability will assist teachers, principals and education authorities to support
access and participation in schooling for students with disability on the same
basis as students without disability.
What information will be collected?
In 2015 the data will be collected between 18 May and 7 August and will
include:
• Total number of school students
• Number of students with disability by school level enrolment
(primary/secondary)
• Number of students within disability type (physical, social/emotional, cognitive
or sensory)
• Level of adjustment provided (Support provided within quality differentiated
teaching practice, supplementary, substantial or extensive)
Information will be recorded in such a way to be sure that no child can be
identified. Student names will not be collected by Education Queensland
