Beginning Metal Smithing
Learn the fundamentals of silversmithing and become familiar
with the tools used in the craft. Students will learn to use hand
tools, a flex shaft, and soldering torch. Working with silver
and copper, you will explore jewelry design and fabrication as
well as stone setting techniques. Students will make a ring, a
pendant, and a pair of earrings. All levels are welcome. Special
fee includes all materials and use of equipment. Materials include: sterling silver and copper sheet metal, sterling silver wire
of various shapes and sizes, silver solder, and a semi-precious

Introduction to Wire Work - Beaded Abacus Necklace
Learn the terminology, tools, and techniques of wirework - including forming, hammering and precision wire wrapping. In
this workshop students will create their own colorful ‘abacus’

Screen Printing
Made famous by Andy Warhol in the ‘60s, screen printing’s distinctive renderings have been transposed onto
posters and tee shirts for years. In this class, you’ll learn
the step-by-step process of screen printing through both
demonstration and hands-on experience. During the
first class, you’ll be shown the various ways of creating
an image: computer-based graphics, drawing by hand, or
cutting an image or images from magazines. Next, you’ll
be shown the ins and outs of using screen printing equipment, gain experience printing a simple image to paper,
learn to print a two-color image to paper, and finally, print
a one-color image to a wearable tee-shirt. Please bring
an 8 1/2 x 11 inch sketchbook, drawing pencils, and an
eraser to class. Special fee includes screen printing screen
and a tee shirt to take home at the end of class. Class is
limited to 8 people; no artistic experience is necessary.

Heritage Jewelry Techniques - Precision Knotting for
Gemstones and Pearls
Explore the basics of pearl knotting-the precise placement
of silk knots between freshwater pearls or other beads.
Students will begin a necklace in class and be shown finishing techniques, design ideas, and how to avoid common
mistakes. Whether creating a new piece or learning how
to save money on one of jewelry’s most costly repairs, students benefit from the technical and aesthetic possibilities

Have you ever wanted to work with metal for a garden or

Plein-Air Landscape Workshop: Watercolor
Enjoy the warm summer evenings as you create small-scale
landscapes in lovely Red Butte Garden. Students will view
demonstrations and receive exercises in washes, blending, wet
on wet, lifting, brushstrokes, glazing, and dry brush. Instruction in composition, positive and negative space, value studies,
and color theory will round out the offering. Painting topics
will include landscapes, still life, and water reflections. You are
responsible for your materials; you can find a list online, or

Beginning Drawing
Anyone can learn to draw! This class will encourage you
to explore drawing through a variety of materials, methods, and philosophies. You will become familiar with
charcoal, ink, graphite, oil pastels, and even alternative
drawing materials as you complete exercises and activities to help you see what is in front of you and set your
vision down on paper. Gain confidence as you become
acquainted with your own unique drawing style. Please

Painting with Glass
Tiny grains of glass are the basis of colorful compositions in
this hands-on workshop. Create a design, paint with “frit”, and
at the end of class you will have a completed work ready to be
fired and fused. Class materials provided. Class limited to 10.
Sewing Basics
Every sewing project, whether garment construction,
quilts or crafts, requires a basic knowledge of the tools
of the trade. Learn to make better choices in commercial
patterns, fabrics and notions, and the measurement and
construction techniques you need to complete a successful sewing project. No previous experience required. This
class will focus on the required preparations before sewing
at a machine. Special fee covers class materials. 48-hour
advanced registration is required so an individual kit can
be made for each student.

Woodcut Printmaking- Let the Chips Fly
Explore a new medium and learn everything you need to know
to carve and press a wood block print. We will cover how to
tone and seal the wood, transfer images on to the block, handle
your Japanese carving tools, and learn how print with the press
or by hand. You will work with Western and Eastern printmaking papers and learn the advantages to oil based inks and water
soluble inks all while exploring the works of known woodcut
artists: Leonard Baskin, Swoon, Tom Huck, Alic Tipoti, Albrecht Durer and Artemio Rodriguez. Class is limited to 8.
Silver Paper Clay
Silver Paper Clay is a pliable material, infused with an
ingredient to make it workable for a longer period of time,
allowing you to fold, weave and manipulate to create a perfect design. It is delicate yet durable when fired. Finished
pieces can be worn as pendants, brooches or earrings. Feeling adventurous, fold it into an Origami piece as Japanese
artists have done. Special fee includes Silver Metal Clay and
other materials needed to make jewelry.

Abstract Art with Alcohol Inks
Alcohol inks are multi-surface inks that can be used on a
variety of surfaces including glossy paper, plastic, metal,
glass and other materials. For those with no or little
experience in painting, we will focus on materials, tools,
techniques, color, value and “seeing” your artistic voice.
You will complete multiple small projects as we experiment
with alcohol inks on a variety of surfaces. Class materials

Mixed Media Journaling
Mixed Media Art Journals combine the timeless art of writing down your thoughts with the fun and messiness of the
mixed media art genre. Add new dimension to your journal
by combining color, images and words to express your
thoughts and ideas. We will cover how to prep your pages,
the use of color and various mediums, tools and pens.
Bring a book (such as an old novel) to mark up and alter or

Print to Wear - Linoleum Carving
Take linoleum cutting one step further as you learn the
basics of carving linoleum for the purpose of printing on
clothing. We will start by creating high contrast black and
white images and learn the proper use of tools, simple registration methods and inking. We will then move on to using
multiple colors and blocks. By the end of class you will have
several printed variations of your own designs and a finished
shirt. One shirt and all tools and materials are included in
the special fee. Please bring any additional clean clothing you
wish to print on. Class is limited to 8. No class July 25.

Metal Clay - Silver
Silver is the new gold—and not as pricey. Join in on a new
jewelry making craze—with metal clay. Nearly everyone can
create beautiful silver wearable art in a couple of two-hour
sessions. This remarkable clay can be formed much like
ceramic clay; it can be stamped, carved or impressed with
diverse objects to create unique patterns and designs. This
is an entry-level class. Included in the class fee is sufficient
silver clay to make one or more pendants, earrings or several bracelet charms. The class will meet two times the same
day to allow for firing of pieces in between meetings. The
morning session involves forming and embellishing simple,
two-dimensional shapes. The instructor fires these pieces
during break. Finish your pieces in the afternoon session,
fashioning them into artful creations, ready to wear.

Italian Ceramics
Italian ceramics are known for intricate detail, beauty,
functionality, long history, and high prices. Just learning
the technique typically requires travel to the Southern
regions of Italy. In this class you will take a plain, preformed Italian ceramic plate or bowl and create your own
intricately detailed and beautiful piece to take home and
use and treasure for years to come. All materials will be
provided for painting, glazing and firing. Section 001 will
complete a plate and section 002 will complete a bowl.

Learn to create vector art using the industry standard

graphics; work with text boxes, tables, layers, and drawing
tools; and set up print styles. Prerequisite: Students are

The Art of iPhoneography
‘The best camera is the one you have with you’ is becoming
a common phrase in this era of ever-improving smartphone
cameras. The high-quality camera in the iPhone has become
increasingly popular and, more important, the photographs
they produce can be amazing. No longer do you have to carry
around a heavy SLR and a bag full of lenses to enjoy photography. We will explore both advantages and current limitations
in these tiny cameras and go over a variety of techniques to
improve your photos. We will also explore a number of popular
apps that allow you to customize both your shooting experience and the resulting photos. Last but not least, we will look
at several options for sharing your photos online. Please expect

Digital Photography: An Introduction

consider when photographing flowers. You’ll learn obstacles to
taking a great photo, how to compose the subject, manipulate

Photoshop for the Amateur
Gain a broad, general overview of Photoshop. Learn the
essential tools used to enhance photos with deepened color

Foraging for Wild Foods
Nature provides a beautiful untended garden in the forests
and backyards that surround us; sitting mostly unappreciated

Home Coffee Roasting
In this informal, yet extremely informative class students will learn the basics of roasting coffee as well as
three ways to roast beans at home. We will go through
basic green coffee information, species, varietals,
regions, climate, etc. and then proceed to learn the
roasting process. Students will learn the steps, chemistry, and external and internal changes that coffee beans
undergo in the roasting transformation so they know
how to roast great tasting coffee.
An Evening at the Patisserie - Tarts
Do you love tarts but avoid making them because the crust
doesn’t come out the way you’d like? In this class you’ll
learn to make traditional French tart dough and the tricks
to make it come out flaky every time. We’ll take that dough
to make two types of fruit tart (one with the fruit baked in
and one with the fruit added fresh), a coconut cream tart,
and a caramel nut tart. As a bonus, we’ll also make a toaster
tart as well. This class is taught in a demonstration format
and we’ll have samples of each tart made in class. This class

Gathering Wild Mushrooms
Delicate, yet hearty and palette pleasing, mushrooms add texture and flavor to a variety of cuisines and dishes. But which
of the thousands of species of mushrooms is edible, and which
will kill you? We’ll begin to learn this important distinction in
class, where we will discuss the basics of mushroom hunting,
which mushrooms in Utah and surrounding states are edible,

Bar Method Exercise
The Bar Method is an hour-long total body workout that
combines isometrics, interval training, dance conditioning,
and sports rehabilitation to quickly and safely burn fat and
carve muscle. Classes are high intensity, non-impact, and
composed of eight to nine exercises that work muscles to
total exhaustion, followed by stretches to change the shape
of the muscle. This combination creates a long, lean, firm,
sculpted body. With regular practice students can expect to
firm muscles, increase flexibility, reduce body fat, improve
posture, and increase stamina and energy. New students
usually begin to see changes in their body within the first

Intro to Tenkara Fly Fishing
Tenkara is a traditional Japanese method of fly fishing utilizing just a rod, a line, and a fly. No reels and no hassle. The
simplicity of Tenkara is perfect for beginning fishers, yet holds
a subtle complexity that can engage you for years. The lightweight gear and intuitive methods apply well in Utah’s rivers
and backcountry. Participants will enjoy an evening of in-class
discussion about history, gear, and techniques with Tenkara
Guides LLC, the first exclusive Tenkara guide company outside of Japan. Saturday, we’ll join Tenkara Guides on the river
to be taught by the true experts of fly fishing - the trout. You

Kayaking Made Easy
Itching to kayak the San Rafael, San Juan, or other Western
river but want to get your skills down first? Inflatable
kayaks are a great way to learn how to paddle. Sturdy and
forgiving, this craft allows beginners to feel comfortable
on the river and advance quickly with their paddling skills.
This introductory class will provide students with training
in river safety, paddling strokes, reading whitewater, river
rescue, and learning about and caring for inflatable kayaking equipment. Please join us for a fun day of paddling on
the Weber River, just 45 minutes from SLC. This class I to
II stretch of river is of appropriate challenge for new paddlers. Small rapids and rock gardens will provide us with
plenty of opportunity to practice our paddling skills. Students are responsible for their boat and gear rental, please
reserve early. Inflatable kayaks and all related gear can be

Read Like a Writer
An important and often neglected part of writing is reading. We are readers before we are writers, and reading

we become writers. In this class we will explore the act of
writerly reading: how does it differ from other kinds of
reading? What do writers notice in the writing of others that the average reader might not, and how do they
use what they find in their own work, without becoming
imitative? Show up prepared to read, mark, and discuss.

From Foothill Blvd, turn north on Mario Capecchi Drive (1750 E, formerly Wasatch
Dr). The Annex Building is at the intersection of Mario Capecchi Drive and South
Campus Drive. Important Parking Updates for the Annex Building can be found on
the Lifelong home page, www.lifelong.utah.edu.
The Fort Douglas TRAX stop is at the north end of the Annex's parking lot. Parking at the Annex is free after 6 PM.
Course room locations are posted on building entrances.
Many classes fill early—avoid disappointment by registering now.

Refunds: Lifelong Learning will refund 100 percent of your fee for classes that are dropped if you call at least four days before the first class
session. We regret that no refunds can be given after that time. The refund policy does not apply to overnight classes or to some special fees.
