Gen. Lee’s Dispatch
April 2015
R.E.Lee Camp 239
Fort Worth, Texas
Commander’s Report
Gentlemen,
With all of the preparations for our Confederate Heritage Dinner this past Saturday evening the
Dispatch is a bit late. Therefore I will try and keep my report on point...
I am happy to report that the dinner was a great success.
As I wrote on the camp’s Facebook page “the venue was outstanding, the staff was gracious, the
food was decent, the speaker and his presentation was inspirational and the fellowship of
compatriots was encouraging. This was probably, in my opinion, the best banquet we have put
together!”
I don’t think we could have found a better place to have our Banquet and I expect that they will
see us again. The food; though not 4 stars was decent and I heard several guests mention how
nice a place it was with no complaints brought to my attention.
The staff was very friendly and tried to meet our every need; I even saw the I.T. guy cover his
heart during the salute to the Confederate flag.
Our guest speaker Ron Kennedy gave us one of those inspiring and thought provoking
presentations.
As an added bonus Ron’s brother Don, co-author of The South Was Right as well as other books
they have co-written, was with us as well. The two visited with everyone and signed copies of
the many titles that they brought.
Buttermilk Junction provided the evenings music and we ate, we sang, a few awards were
presented and the camaraderie was splendid.
Even with the one computer glitch you could not have asked for a better evening.
Many, many thanks to all of those that took the time to spend the evening with us not only those
members of Lee camp; but those of the other camps as well. Some drove from quite a distance
and I appreciate your attendance.

(Commander’s Report Continued)
The House Culture, Recreation and Tourism Committee held a hearing in Austin on HB 1242 Bill to Change Confederate Heroes Day to Civil War Remembrance Day Tuesday, April 14th and
from what I hear more than 35 compatriots were present to voice their opinions. The local Austin
newspapers were very critical of those opinions with their hateful attacks; but fairly well made
our case about the desire to disrespect and diminish Texas’ Confederate heritage by getting rid of
the only state holiday left to honor our heroes all under the guise of being inclusive. They say in
one breath that we should celebrate all of those that were involved during the war including the
Confederates, Unionists and Blacks then in the next breath belittle and deride those same
Southern patriots. These people disgust me...
I am encouraged by Rep Donna Howard’s (D-Austin) statement “...the bill would not only be
unlikely to see a vote Tuesday night, but might not see a vote at all; given how controversial the
issue remains.”
The bill was left pending in committee and hopefully there it will die.
Gentlemen do not forget that our meeting is this coming Monday April 20th and we will be
having our annual candle lighting ceremony to honor our ancestors. New members be sure to
come prepared knowing your Confederate ancestor and what his regiment was.God bless the
South,
Barry Turnage

Sons Of Confederate Veterans
Charge to the Sons of Confederate Veterans
To you, Sons of Confederate Veterans, we wi! commit the vindication of the Cause for which we
fought. To your strength wi! be given the defense of the Confederate soldier's good name, the
guardianship of his history, the emulation of his virtues, the perpetuation of those principles
which he loved and which you love also, and those ideals which made him glorious and which
you also cherish. Remember, it is your duty to see that the true history of the South is presented
to future generations.
Lt. General Stephen Dill Lee
Commander-General
United Confederate Veterans
New Orleans, 25 April 1906
The citizen-soldiers who fought for the Confederacy personified the best qualities of
America. The preservation of liberty and freedom was the motivating factor in the
South's decision to fight the second American Revolution. The tenacity with which
Confederate soldiers fought underscored their belief in the rights guaranteed by the
Constitution. These attributes are the underpinning of our Republic and represent
the foundation on which this nation was built.
Today, the Sons of Confederate Veterans is preserving the history and legacy of these
heroes so future generations can understand the motives that animated the Southern
Cause. The S.C.V. is the direct heir of the United Confederate Veterans and is the
oldest hereditary organization for male descendants of Confederate soldiers, sailors
and Marines. Organized in Richmond, Virginia in 1896, the S.C.V. continues to serve
as a historical, patriotic and non-political organization dedicated to insuring that a
true history of the 1861-1865 period is preserved.
Today ask yourself…”what have I done for my camp, the Texas Division
and the Sons of Confederate Veterans.” ~ David L. Moore, 1st Lt. Cmdr.
Texas Division.
Please join us at our next meeting of the Robert E. Lee
Camp 239. We will meet on April 20th, 2015 at 6:30 pm
Ol’ South Pancake House, 1509 S. University Dr.
Ft. Worth, Texas. Visitors are always welcome.
