Kicking off in Joliet, Illinois, a group of more than 300 members will take this famous rite of passage with hundreds more joining up at planned stops in 11 cities, including Springfield on May 1819. The journey will culminate in a celebration at their final stop in Ventura, California June 2 where the Sisters will converge at the Pacific coast. Founded in 1999 by reallife sisters, Maurrie Sussman and Rebecca Clarke, Sisters on the Fly has grown to nearly 6,000 members across the country and internationally, who have connected through their shared affinity for the outdoors, fly fishing, camping and, most importantly, fun. Since the start, many of the Sisters have famously renovated and decorated vintage trailers, which they use to caravan to and from many of the group’s planned activities. While not a requirement, the vintage trailer caravans have become one of the SOTF trademarks and the Route 66 journey is no exception. More than 300 Sisters will tow and display their vintage trailers on portions of or the entire journey and will spend one to two nights in each city, taking in the sites and attractions of each while visiting with other Sisters and followers who stop by to say hello along the way. The schedule for the monthlong trip includes: ● May 1213 Joliet, Illinois ● May 1415 Springfield, Illinois ● May 1617 St. Louis ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● May 1819 Springfield May 20 Kansas (city TBD) May 2021 Claremore, Oklahoma May 2223 Oklahoma City, Oklahoma May 2425 Amarillo, Texas May 2631 New Mexico and Arizona (cities TBD) June 1 Barstow, California June 25 Ventura, California “This trip has been on our bucket list of adventures for many years,” said Maurrie Sussman, Sister #1 and cofounder of Sisters on the Fly. “Traveling with a group this size is a onceina lifetime experience and we are so excited about the participation, enthusiasm and hard work that our Sisters have put into making it a reality.” One of the Sisters who will participate in the full trek is Lisa Mora, Sister #2348. Originally from Australia, Mora recently moved to Oregon and will be driving her 1953 Hudson Hornet with a 1956 Mercury trailer in tow. Mora is a vintage trailer enthusiast and publisher and editor of “Vintage Caravan Magazine.” At the end of the tour, Mora will give away the trailer used during the tour to a “Vintage Caravan Magazine” subscriber.
